Numbness sounds emotionally unhealthy for him. Anger sounds dangerous. Sorrow sounds like it's the most realistic.
The Absurd and Madness are... too dangerous.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!

[X] [War] Offer reparations for damages and universal manumission of Trelli slaves (-15 Wealth, -1 Stability, chance of further loss, -7-8 Econ Expansion, 7 temp Econ damage, +7-8 Econ next turn, current trader quest fails, ???)
[X] [War] Withdraw (-5 Wealth, -5 Prestige, -1 Religious Authority, 4 Econ temp damage, chance of stability loss, +4-5 Econ next turn, current trader quest fails, ???)

Continuing this war isn't going to do us any damned good.

No, I don't want to abandon empathy. Falling into depression may shorten his life, but I think that, narratively, the king who was heartbroken by the failure of the Ymaryn's abolitionist ideals is a better story, as well.

Initial votes

[X] [King] Embrace Anger
Maybe this will get him some better martial? Or at least bring some righteous fury to the war effort.

Keep going until Trell collapses. We can't afford to have a hostile power strangling our one real sea trade route.

Btw, for those considering withdrawing:

In terms of stats, we are across the board still in excellent shape. We only need to boost Stability and keep one stat maxed and the Golden Age remains secure.

The military is in good shape as well and will get a huge infusion this turn from Offensive policy.

If we back out the Trell will strengthen themselves and have a revenge CB.
We're left with pirates, damaged morale, and a megaproject to finish if we want to in any way weaken the Trell.

And, if we pick simple withdrawal, have flaunted our values.

None of them are good. Absurd and Madness would probably generate an opportunity to impeach a ruling King(which has oh so many problems dangling from it).

Numbness is probably the least harmful to his ability to wage war. Anger is...problematic on a King level, though useful on the field, wrath makes you easy to manipulate.
Sorrow would probably hurt his ability to keep fighting, might call an early withdrawal out of our hands.

Basically. Withdrawing now makes it MUCH worse, the Trelli have been bleeding economically, but if we withdraw now they've basically only taken damage to expendable subordinates and mercenaries.

[X] [King] Embrace the Absurd
My reasoning for this decision is that it is exactly what I wanted to create with an Ymaryn holy book. By embracing the Absurd, our king gains the ability to create meaning where none exists. He can usher in a philosophy that was only seen after the Enlightenment in Europe. He can now alter his spiritual beliefs and morality while staying perfectly sane. This could lead to unprecedented intellectual and cultural growth for our society.

I do not believe we have reached a point in this war where we can safely and effectively withdraw. We do need to withdraw in order to minimize losses, but we need to have at least some advantage over Trelli before we withdraw.

or improve it, by getting him motivated to reduce pointless waste and thus choose actions that will reduce deaths on both sides through their success. We as a culture/nation want to end slavery and are tired of their impositions. He wouldn't end the war with enough pressure.
