AMI (grinning mischievously): "And where am I, in all of this?"

HAZOU (countering): "Where do you want to be?"

Also this, we're asking for a lot here just for them to train Hazou and asking for the entire team is roughly 3x as much.
Teaching 3 students isn't much harder than teaching one. In fact, it's often easier/better for the teacher.
I grant that it's a bigger Opsec ask.

IIRC, the argument is that Hazou has a bigger right to make asks, because he (1) was and is pivotal to saving their Path from an existential threat, (2) is a genius sealmaster who is currently pivotal to saving the Human Path from the Akatsuki, (3) is a genius sealmaster who may be able to resurrect Jiraiya. Whereas Noburi is just some cool kid they know.
I think combining the request let's us tap into the advantages of both. We can prevail upon Hazou's importance and service to the 7th path, and use Noburi's relationship and better socials.

(various claims about 7path travel and embassies)
We aren't random genin anymore, and the 7th path isn't the same insular place it was when we first encountered it. Post-crusade is a great time to ask for this kind of thing. And leaf summoners have a lot more weight to put behind "no seriously, this is important" if Naruto orders them to.

@Left-Hand Mutant is this a sufficient compromise? We float both options to the team and have them pick the one that's more likely to work?
Yeah, this seems good. I'll comment on the implementation once it's written.

Although the phrasing "more likely to work" is a slightly off, for example, we'd take a 5% cut to our odds in exchange for getting double/triple the training if it works.

Hmm,the next challenge is how to write the plan so that Hazou has a good pitch if he's solo, but Noburi writes his own lines(with everyone else's help) if we're a group.

Anyhoo, thank you both for discussing this.

On it.
Are there any concerns either of you have that I didn't address?
One thing y'all tend to forget: Seventh Path people are people. They aren't chess pawns who go where you tell them with alacrity and a smile. Asking eg a dog or pangolin to go to Toad in order to play message relay is like me asking you to move to France so that I can call your phone and you can hand it to the person I want to talk to because I don't have their number. And I expect you to stay there indefinitely, and you're only allowed to communicate with people back home via letter. And there's no Internet so entertainment options are limited.
. I don't recall where Turtle and Porcupine are exactly, but I don't think they're as close as the Pangs. Snake and Slug are closer,
Also, there's a map: Marked for Death: A Rational Naruto Quest

Well yeah, that's why I'm so reluctant to expect the Bosses/the Summons to agree to station people at the TS so Nobs can train there.
Thanks, looks like it would be days of travel for anyone who isn't Kei or Conjura. Kei might be able to do hours.

Save Summons stationed at the TS, Naruto would just have to wait until Nobs comes to do his daily check in. Pretty much what I expected, hence my estimate of 8ish hours to contact him

[X] Action Plan: Jiraiya's Heir (Redux)

Does taking Neji work? We can't take four Summoners, so Kei would need to stay home.
Maybe:
  • Does taking Neji work? Would leaking our abilities increase or decrease the Hyuuga clan willing to be cooperative with us?

Kei, if you're joining, you can still go hunt chakra beasts with Yuno first. Just join us afterwards (we'll share location through the Seventh Path).
  • Noburi, you could go with them too. It's been a while since your last combat mission.

Seems low-priority to me. Maybe talking to Kei about Akatsuki's Isan investigation and if she wants to go to Crimson Island as a "side mission"/Scroll hunt would give her a better idea of the situationand to come to a decision?

"Yes I want to leave and do this stuff"
"No Hazoz this is dumb, take Neji"

Word Count: <599
  • Mari, Kei, Snowflake, Noburi (max-security conditions): Share Naruto's latest instructions. Postpone discussing them until Kagome joins.
    • Discuss WHOOSH. It's busted, or will be soon.
    • We should be proactive: promise cooperation and share our training optimizations[1] with Naruto in exchange for benefits, such as retaining first priority on chakra.
      1. IC representations of our spreadsheet work; it's presumably highly valuable and took significant effort and trial-and-error.
    • Being open would strengthen our negotiating position. Naruto would be buying an S-ranker-making trick, not just bribing Noburi to stay home.
    • Mari, you're on it. Do it after we leave, so that Naruto has to deal with you.
      • You have carte blanche for extracting maximum benefits. Feel free to drive a ruthlessly hard bargain.
      • Highest priority: more S-rank jutsu for your S-ranker kit.
        • Suggestion: look for esoteric abilities/attack vectors.
    • After WHOOSH's discussed, include Kagome.
      • Does taking Neji work? We can't take four Summoners, so Kei would need to stay home.
        • Seems like there would be friction (to put it lightly) between Neji and Kagome
        • His eyes would be useful for developing stealthy runic weapons.
      • Kei, can you get to Toad? Even if you don't join us on this Path, we'd like frequent advice from you.
      • We plan to ask the Toad Sages to teach us. Noburi especially, would you help optimize our pitch?
        • We're torn between asking for training for the entire trio (Hazou, Kei, Noburi) and just Hazou
        • Latter is a smaller ask, and they are probably more inclined to do favors for Hazou right now (Post-Crusade).
        • Former is just better for us, although it has a couple problems, Naruto is likely to want maximal access to Noburi.
        • There are advantages too, Noburi has better social skills so having him take point there might help Fukusu and Shima agree.
      • Kei, if you're joining the mission, you can still go hunt chakra beasts with Yuno first. Just join us afterwards (we'll share location through the Seventh Path).
        • Noburi, you could go with them too. It's been a while since your last combat mission.
    • Fill out the necessary paperwork, then go have Naruto "assign" us this mission.
      • Defer to the team regarding taking/not-taking {Kei, Neji}, and asking for training for {Hazou, the trio}
  • Toad Sages
    • Ask for their complete confidence
    • Explain the situation with Akatsuki on the Human Path. Akatsuki's dominance, Pain's inexorable pressure, the EN's impotence, Naruto's desperation.
      • Give them Naruto's recommendation letter
    • We are in a desperate situation. Hazou has had to leave Leaf on a long-term research mission to keep Akatsuki from dropping by and discovering runes by accident
    • We need your help to save the Human Path as we helped save the Seventh Path, but rather than your strength, we need your knowledge.
    • Under your tutelage Jiriaya grew into a titan, possibly the strongest human fighter of his time.
    • We are coming to you on a bended knee to beg you for the same sort of training he received.
    • We have some ideas to replicate a fraction of your power, but we would much rather learn from you instead.
    • This is not insanity. We have good reason to think we stand a chance against Akatsuki, in time.
      • If they seem interested, explain chakra filtering runes and chakra potential runes
      • We have the keys to rediscovering Minato's way of combining TH and Sealing, but we're about to lose access to our teacher. Could you teach a human TH?
      • We have cracked a way of using Noburi's power to make Shadow Clone training vastly more efficient.
    • Would you accept us as your disciple?
Okay edits to include asking about Hazou/the trio, edits also about including Neji on the away team.

Re: Noburi + Sage Mode

I don't think this would mean unlimited chakra for everyone. Sage Mode is achieved by balancing Nature Chakra and Human Chakra at some proportion inside yourself and using that as rocket fuel for your techniques, or maybe only specific techniques, or something else. Regardless, it doesn't change Nature Chakra into Human Chakra, which means that any attempt by Noburi to transfer chakra to someone else is going to end with them turning into stone (unless they themselves already know how to use Sage Mode)

Does taking Neji work? Would leaking our abilities increase or decrease the Hyuuga clan willing to be cooperative with us?
I'm not that concerned with leaks and more concerned about Kagome going ballistic and refusing to go on the mission if Neji is there.

Kei is stagnated right now, which mean she's earning about 70% of the XP she should be, this is intended to resolve that. Waiting for a long time to resolve this has huge costs. In my mind this is high priority.
How much are you paying me in terms of generalized resources, i. e. units of causal influence over my surroundings (tentatively formalized as the change in KL divergence between my desired world-state and the actual reality)?
I only understand reciprocity since my culture doesn't understand any of that other stuff yet.

If she decides to come with us she would have combat on the island? If the Leadership part is a problem then Summons+SC could also count for unstagnation?

If she wants to stay she is going to with Yuno anyway.

I am not concerned about the leak, but Kei/Mari should evaluate if we can benefit from this, Kagome will likely see reason if given some good arguments. Or we drop Neji anyway.

What island? I have no plans to go to CSI in the next few weeks.

I have no plans to risk Hazou for a few months at least. Although we will likely have to take a combat mission to keep leveling PS.

Why on Earth would it? I think that a leak would be pretty clearly bad and I expect some ridicule from Mari/Kei for asking this question. If you have a compelling reason that we need to ask this I'm willing to do it, but I ain't seeing it so far.

Kagome is actually not all that great at listening to reason IMO.

This whole thing is likely moot since I expect us to just drop Neji in favor of Kei. But it was voted in last plan and I don't feel like it would be appropriate to cut it entirely.

We can always ask them about hidden benefits of Hinata knowing about runes after we bring Neji along

The Uchiha deal that Mari negotiated also comes to mind.
oh yeah. that. *shudders*
Focusing on soft power did not, historically, do much for us. Hard power – summoning scrolls, sealing notes, sealing proficiency, WMDs, truckloads of money – is the kind of power that actually has an ontological momentum, the kind of power that isn't going to evaporate the moment we look away for a moment.

So I'd like to clearly instruct Mari to get us that, rather than subtle political tools that we can't/won't use in the short time before they're gone.
Alright. I understand the necessity of some sort of instruction so as to prevent another Uchiha style misunderstanding between Hazo and Mari. I had honestly forgotten about that one.

I do still think however that this secret we're trading will have long term consequences and value to leaf, and to an unknown number of ninja over the next years and possibly decades if the quest possibly gets that far. That it's a commitment Noburi will have to keep for most of his life so long as he's a leaf Ninja. That trading that kind of contractual obligation for a singular bump in power and washing our hands of it is wasting a lot of the value we could get out of it.

Also we've just had Oro and Naruto offer us some of the best Jutsu they've had/that we could think of. There's got to be diminishing returns to this kind of request. Even if only in the form of how much exp we can afford to invest in these new techniques.

I'd still prefer something that's 'worth Noburi's efforts' and 'useful given the current Akatsuki crisis and impending end of the world'. Something a bit more vague but still pointed enough to prevent miscommunication.

Imagine, for example, if Naruto and every ninja included in foom owed both Noburi and Goketsu clan each a concrete favor for every year Noburi buffs their training. That favor could take the form of jutsu. Maybe not as good as the one we'd be asking for, but multiple jutsu from S ranks and S-rank prospects over time adds up. It could take the form of Tsunade's apprenticeship. It could take the form of Uchiha clan secrets (for beating Itachi of course!). It would, in short, make sure that nobody feels entitled to Noburi's bloodline. That nobody would jump into this 'free training boost' frivolously, if they know they'd owe Goketsu for the pleasure. It could, should there ever be the unfortunate need to once again elect a Hokage, place the results of that election firmly in our back pocket. It could help us or the Nara pass whatever reform we're interested in next, to once again change the course of leaf and advance the interests of uplift forever.

If you think that is too high a price, that Naruto would be unwilling to agree to it despite not even having to bear most of the cost himself, that's fine. That's just an example of the kind of deal I want Mari to be allowed to make, and not taken off the table in favor of more immediate interests.

Y'all, we're missing the fact that it was Hiashi Hyūga who Hazō tanked Naruto's relationship with him over.

Then we don't actually care about the clan? Huh?

Re-reading LutD, and there's both the one man army technique, and an explanation of how to beat your opponent by forcing them to clash with your best skills in the same chapter. Felt very relevant to this past mfd chapter, and I appreciate that.

Yeah, which is why I really want Sage Mode for all 3 for our main trio.
Noburi will need to exit sage mode and empty himself of nature chakra before he can safely refill a non-sage.

You have carte blanche for extracting maximum benefits. Feel free to drive a ruthlessly hard bargain.
"....*without* Alienating Naruto." is missing.
Friendly Naruto is an asset, especially now that we paid a fortune and sacrificed our relations with Hinata to make him Kage. Remember that Hazou was on the outs until very recently. don't let greed screw our relationship with him again.

Highest priority: more S-rank jutsu for your S-ranker kit.
  • Suggestion: look for esoteric abilities/attack vectors.
also, Minato's seals or an A-rank Earth-Element Taijutsu buff.

I might phrase this as: "Kei, can you afford to be away from leaf to join us on this mission? we really hope so, because the alternative is taking *Neji*."
saves wordcount, and cuts to the core decision more clearly.
Kei(pessimistic doomer and veteran sanity checker) dosen't need our help to see why bringing Neji might cause issues, and calculate tradeoffs.

"torn between" seem weird and likley to offend. it's not the most important, but i'd just say "should we ask for N/K/H together, or just Hazou?"
similarly, the main goal here is for NPCs to do analisys bassed on their better information/skills. the discussion points listed are obvious enough that they'll come up immediately. just kick them the question straight up.

as for the actual Toad Sage discussion, I'd like to flag they we're willing to let our advisors rewrite our script. we say "optimize", but that's often just treated a phrasing tweaks. this is a case where we really want to give Noburi/Mari a lot of room to make changes, and follow thier advice.
maybe say "let Noburi/Mari heavily rewrite talking points, use the arguments they think are best".

Find a small connected group who's down for adventure? like a group of earliy-20s friends? pay them very well? only ask for a 6-month commitment, and point out how interesting and high-status their uniuqe experiances will have made them? impress on them how important it is and how thankful you'll be and making them feel important? bring them gifts from the human path that don't exist on the 7th path, and have Naruto rubber-stamp them so they're from "the Boss of Leaf/Fire".

While it's important to remember that they aren't pawns, there are probaly a lot of ways to get someone to agree to this, especialy if you actually try. this was one approach for one perticular target profile. I can write more, but I think most NPCs are capable of solving this on their own.

Alternately, going into battle with 30 SC each, all brimming with Chakra
Where is the chakra coming from? If you do this on the Seventh Path, you won't be able to take the clones back with you. If you do it on the Human Path, it's not an economy since the summons get their chakra from you to begin with (and even if they didn't, you'd still need to summon 30 SCs' worth of summons as your startup cost).

Re-reading LutD, and there's both the one man army technique, and an explanation of how to beat your opponent by forcing them to clash with your best skills in the same chapter. Felt very relevant to this past mfd chapter, and I appreciate that.
Remind me which chapter?

Noburi drains Nature Chakra from 7th path people.
Noburi unsummons and refills Hazou/Kei on the Human path.
Hazou and Kei spend all their chakra on summons and/or SC.
Noburi returns to 7th path, repeat.
