That went well.

My opinion is that we need to consult with Tsunade, and have Tsunade oversee the operation. If we don't do the second, I think it's guaranteed that Oro will install, you know... failsafes. Pay Tsunade another couple millions for her time (we must have a lot of excess cash from what Oro just paid us), and to compensate Oro for the inconvenience, make studying whatever pieces of the Iron Nerve he stumbles across as part of the operation an explicit and explicitly endorsed-by-us part of the deal (with him sharing the findings).
Snuncle needs to give himself more credit. As far as essies go, he's refreshingly easy to work with.
He really is!

He said that's the side-effects when the seal is misused, and that properly used it doesn't give those effects. I don't know what counts as 'misused' (maybe we can only remove 4h of the night and attempting to skip the other 4h will cause side-effects), but I'm confident that there is a real use case that reduces our need for sleep without penalty.

This, tbh. Orochimaru isn't a Medic, and he's severely antisocial besides. In his mind, he's warned us, so he's done his part. If we're too stupid to follow up, or realize the (from his perspective) blindingly obvious side effects, that that's the price of stupidity.

What's that phrase? "If you're going to be stupid, you have to be tough."

I think it probably works by telling your brain "no shut up you're not tired" but it doesn't actually remove the need for sleep. And perhaps the warning is because as Mist ex-genin, we have a different approach to sleep cycles.

OROCHIMARU: "So here's the bioseal. Tap the tattoo on your shoulder for a slow, steady release of Diluted Akimichi Stimulants into your system. It'll grant you one night's worth of awakeness per use. Use it more than once every two weeks, and you'll need new kidneys."

HAZOU: "Will you--"

OROCHIMARU: "I will not be giving you new kidneys."

No, I don't think that's the only explanation we're going to get. But right now, before we've even agreed to the procedure, 'it works but you can misuse it and experience side-effects' is enough to inform our decision-making process.

My main point is that there is an intended use case that works without side-effects. I also happen to believe that he will tell us what constitutes 'misusing the bioseal' if we say we're actually going through with it when we show up tonight. Not telling us would be like splinting a broken leg and forgetting to tell them to not walk on it.

Can we stop voting whether or not we accept the seal and actually write a coherent plan that accepts the seal? Also there should be interview question.

Idea for a biosealed product:

Living blood pouches - Life support system for carrying around blood to be transfused, using the cells of individual incipient. At first highly fragile, prone to contamination and complicated to use, successive iteration has improved upon these weakness. Improved immune response and better barrier protect blood from disease and contamination. Increased toughness through leathery skins enable field usage, both on the battlefield and in rural settings. Features such as built in tubes and latching mechanisms make it easier to transfuse blood.

Actually snuncle said to learn specifically medical tools and terminology. Not medical knowledge in general. Which makes informed consent reasons less likely. Maybe he wants hazou to be a lab assistant handing him tools while dissecting dragon parts? Where oro plans to do that simultaneously with forbidden lore lecture to optimize his time?

Clarification

I am writing the Sunday update, for which voting closes at 9 a.m. UK time on Sunday. @Velorien is writing part 2 of the Orochimaru conversation, for which the only thing that needs to be voted on is whether Hazou accepts Orochimaru's offered sleep-reducing bioseal (and the attendant risks of being involved in an invasive surgery). The full content of the lore conversation he has with Orochimaru has already been decided.

[x] Action Plan: Family Matters
Wordcount: tbd
  • Sanity Check with Mari
  • Check up with everyone: what did we miss?
  • Hang out with Noburi:
    • Is he excited to see his sisters? Arrange so that they have decent rooms
    • What's his professional opinion about the bioseal?
      • We're worried about the sudden change in Orochimaru's behavior.
      • What if he just wants to examine our bloodline more... directly.
  • Visit Ami for lunch
    • What chaos have you been up to?
      • How're your dates with Naruto?
      • Last we heard, you weren't inherently interested in the dates, themselves, you were more interested in the ways that Naruto behaved on the dates, and the way he presented the Museum materials to you --which gave you more data about Naruto's personality than one would first suspect.
        • Now that you have the data, what're your conclusions?
    • If Ami asks about the mission
      • Talk about the Neck genin (maintain opsec, be sparse on locations/details), commiserate regarding missions that wound your soul
        • If Ami looks like she's in need of a hug, offer one.
  • BIOSEAL DECISION: [tbd]
  • Administration (potential offscreen for QM Spoons)
    • Explosives increase life expectancy.
    • Work with Gaku and Kei to examine how much we profit from selling seals (explosives, specifically) to KEI, and offer a discount on explosives (can be abstracted away to prevent MfE).
    • Most Genin are projected to die soon after graduating from the Academy. KEI genin, even more so.
    • For their first year after graduating from the Academy, KEI Genin receive an additional discount that stacks with the previous one (can be abstracted away to prevent MfE). After this year, this discount ends, but they still receive the general KEI discount.
      • This is intended to boost survivability during their most vulnerable phase, and give the KEI Genin a year to get their feet under them
      • Also forges stronger bonds between KEI and the Goketsu
I'm saying this because this plan seems very Vel-targeted, and I want to clarify that there will be two separate updates: Vel's part 2 of the Orochimaru conversation and my update based on a new player plan. Apologies for any confusion.

Let's assume that Hazo, hardened veteran of Mist's ninja academy, driven and ambitious individual, and mild lunatic, sleeps seven hours per night.

Let's further assume that there are going to be some drawbacks to getting the seal. Let's abstract that to, say, clawing back two of those hours.

We now have ~20% more time in the day.

I don't think that's worth it for the narrative drawbacks that would come with - being a biosealed individual, biosealed by Orochimaru, would drive Hazo further away from humanity and might play into his Out stuff and Orochimaru is not necessarily the most reliable source of warnings (Cave of Mild Peril, anyone?) and and and. I don't think this is a good idea.

[X] Reject the seal

I don't think voting for it like that is a good idea, but I want to provide a locus of opposition.

Additionally, a plan. ~15 extra words at present. We're not voting on the stuff I was making a plan for - RIP.

[X] Action Plan: Concluding Negotiationssssss
Word count: <300
  • Prep:
    • Thank Noburi for coming with us.
    • Getting the seal is nuts, right? It sounds crazy.
    • Run your plan for talking to Orochimaru by Mari, Noburi, and Kagome. Take topic suggestions from them.
    • Get a crash course in "basic medical tools and terminology".
  • Orochimaru:
    • Hand over the parts.
    • Before we begin, a clarification: it was a pleasure.
      • Interactions with other clan heads or political entities are often fraught, complex, unintelligible, and/or frustrating. It's refreshing to have a straightforward interaction.
      • We're terrified of you - you're one of if not the most powerful shinobi in Leaf. But that doesn't invalidate our gratitude and appreciation for how the sale was conducted.
    • We don't know enough about biosealing or our bloodline to make an informed decision regarding a bioseal. We politely decline.
    • Conduct:
      • Don't press him on topics or linger if he's moving on.
      • For once in your life Hazo respect authority.
    • Topics:
      • What do you know about Nakara?
        • What do you know about interpath travel?
        • We want to return the dead to life and we want to accomplish this by being able to move between Nakara and the Human Path with no more difficulty than moving between the Human and Seventh Path.
    • What do you know about the Dragons?
      • Kabuto's reaction to our mentioning the Dragons was significant. We need to kill them and repair the Great Seal.
      • What do you know about the creature the Dragons were created to fight, and that conflict?
    • Sealing:
      • What do you know about 3D sealing?
      • Was Pain's machine a 3D seal?
      • Do you know anything about non-paper sealing mediums?
        • Can carve (2D) seals into stone?
        • How can you tattoo a bioseal given that flesh moves and changes?
    • Thank you for your time.

So, we don't need to vote on what happens during the lore conversation at all?

Should we use some sort of approval ([Y] Accept the Seal / [X] Reject the Seal) for Vel's upcoming update?

When will your update start? What do you like writing?

Perhaps now would be a good time to do some normal Sealing

Or for that matter, get Kagome a chance to look at the great seal without dying

Did you miss this plan?

[X] Refuse the seal: Snuncle-adapted CCnJ
  • Be polite about it
    • Which means no asking for something else to replace it. Orochimaru was generous enough.
  • "After reflection, I would avoid being affected by biosealing altogether until I am reasonably well-versed in it" or something to that effect
  • Let us also not linger on it and just get down to business.

But also,
[X] Reject the seal

Correct me if I am wrong @Velorien , but that is my understanding. The existing, voted-upon lore convo will be run.

@Velorien ?
When will your update start?
The day after Hazou's lore conversation with Orochimaru and optional surgery. Nonlinear time may need to be invoked if anything truly urgent happens as a result of that event, but I doubt it.
What do you like writing?
Can I refer you to this?

From the rules doc, under "QM had fun".

If we don't get a caffeine bioseal, then I want a How To Guide on Biosealing. Something equivalent to Jiraiya's Elemental Notes, but unlocks the Biosealing Stunt (making it available for purchase), instead.

Personally I'd suggest starting on Minato's seals with Kagome, given how excited he was about them. Maybe research some of that and seek out seals from other clans/sealmasters to power up via MARS?
