On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

[X] [Chain]: Wait until Rhunkalbrogg. (Turn 41)
Gain: Greater impact when you do reveal it, what with the work. ??? Deed and Title, Chainwright.
[X] [Masters]: Teach them the Rune of Forged Limb
- [X] Lax: Any Runesmith who has reached the rank of Master is worthy. All of the two dozen will be taught.

- [X] Middling: Teach those you consider reasonably sure to use and spread the rune as you do. 18 Of the two dozen will be taught.

Stringent , with it's long term effects on how this rune is taught to later runesmiths is going to give us a shit-ton of troubles in propagating this rune down the line, and almost certainly sharply increase the chances this achievement would join the ranks of countless achievements of the golden age lost to the ages. No thank you.

So, for the people that want vote for the lax option, what is your answer to a potential shism between Thungni and Valaya followers. Because it only needs one Valaya Temple pestering a conservative Runesmith for the trouble to start brewing. Remember, Runesmiths are rare as fuck and only in our hold in the North they can be found in enough numbers that seeing a normal master Runesmith isn't anything special. And there will always be more amputees in need of a prosthetic than Runesmith available. Not everyone has the same output as Snorri.

Midling seems like the best option: the rune is spread but the Runesmith who learn it won't have problem helping Valayans.

Teach them all and let the Ancestors sort them out!

I think you are overreacting and that the Rune is worth it

That's not strictly true, runesmiths are rarer in the North because it's the Dwarven boonies. They're drastically more common in the heartlands of the dwarven empire, for the longest while we were iirc the only runelord in the north.

I'm honestly torn between not teaching it and middling. I have been swayed by the arguments about it being interpreted as political. I would prefer to limit the spread of the Rune.

Simple, do as modern hospitals do and transfer the patients to other Temples of Valaya that do have access to Runesmiths with a Snorri-esque stance on rune proliferation.

@soulcake n we get another option on the limbs: Defer until the Rhunkalbrogg?

The Chainmaker revelation can be argued to be an identical issue, wherein runeworks of identical design are replicated because of how useful that particular rune or configuration is. We can put them each to a vote of Runelords for dissemination.

Getting the Conservatives to say "okay this Rune is exempt" requires the power of Thungni.

You are not Thungni.

Right, and Thungni's not guaranteed to be at the Rhunkalbrogg. I was thinking of making the argument to the entire Rhunkalbrogg, including Thungni.

Ah well. Won't fly, nevermind.

I am genuinely at a loss to judge this one then. The only option whose consequences I'm sure of is "Don't teach them." Stringent could be bad, because controlling runesmiths. Lax could be bad because spreading the knowledge widely/irresponsibly.

Honestly, I feel so at sea judging the consequences now it's kind of a 'throw up your hands' moment. It feels like picking a mystery door.

>_> I won't lie to you guys, I'm seriously considering whether these votes are good for the long term health of the thread and whether I just let Snorri take over these decisions. Ach, a problem of my own doing.

I'm like 60% in favour of this idea. The politics of the Rule of Pride have been stressful to navigate, and not fun stressful.

Then bring it up at the Rhunkalbrogg. It's only in, what, three turns?
Teaching these Runesmiths would presumably happen before that. If you want to bring it up at Rhunkalbrogg first, vote to not teach them.

Please do, Snorri's characterization is pretty solid at this point that such wouldn't be out of place. And because these types of vote that to cause flame wars.

Gonna stay out of the other vote for now I do think people are making way or much of it though trust Soulcake he isn't going out of his way to screw us and we will have opportunities to turn things around if things start to go bad.

Or Alaric the Mad was driven mad due to breaking a social obligation and spending a shit load of time experimenting on warpstone. The guy was mad before he made the Runefangs any way. Otherwise he'd have never taken the commision from the then High king to make the Runefangs for the Empire. I'd also point out under the rule set we're currently using and given it took multiple centuries Snorri would probably have been able to fulfil that commission with out falling a foul of his understanding of the rule of pride.
Uh, no he directly wasn't called out as having gone mad until he spent a century straight applying the same master rune twelve times in a row. And my argument was never that Snorri couldn't do it but rather than just throwing the rule of pride out the window doesn't now mean that everyone now gets to wear armor with master runes on it for a variety of reasons previously listed of which the most prominent was that spamming master runes ain't great for your mental health meaning that the rule of pride as a tradition probably has some merit.
You're wrong. If you weren't wrong then Snorri and others who do bend the Rule of Pride for various purposes (such as Runes of Light, which are also needed in enormous numbers) would be experiencing symptoms of this ridiculous mental condition you describe.

In reality Alaric the Mad's madness was probably caused by a century of uninterrupted, self imposed isolation inside his forge, which we should never do.
Or it just means that people can bend the rule of pride to varrying degrees before seeing the problem because not everyone is the same mentally that still doesn't mean that Snorri wouldn't go mad if he spent all his time forging the same master rune again and again and again and again.

Plus it's not like runesmiths aren't noted as often spending vast periods of time isolated from other Dwarfs same with other Dwarf professions so it seems highly unlikely that it was the time he spent in his workshop which drove him mad.
Ehh, to me it is unclear whether it is the century Alric sat in his forge solely creating the runefangs, the stubborn refusal to believe he had reached the pinnacle of his career, or the forging of multiple of the same master rune in succession that drove him mad.

Given the little information we have on him, I'm hesitant to say that it was solely the act of making so many of the same Master Rune in succession that drove him made.
Most Dwarfs seem to think it was the forging of the runefangs which drove him mad rather than anything else.
