Nah, I was recalling that time we were like "Keiko get stealth spec" and we got Panjandrum instead or something. Yknow the convo, where Keiko is like "You mean you don't want a technique hacker? Or a ...? "
"...so, do you agree?" Hazou asked.

Kei looked at him calmly. "You think the best choice of summon for me to acquire is a scout?"

"Yes, exactly," Hazou said firmly. A faint trickle of concern began trickling faintly through the back of his brain. By now he'd started to notice a pattern of how conversations went when he finished explaining something and the other person calmly repeated a summary back to him.

"A scout."

"Yep." The trickle was turning into a steady flow.

"Instead of, say, a ninjutsu teacher?" Kei asked. "Or a merchant who can advise us on constructing this trade empire you keep mumbling about?"

"Um...," Hazou said. The trickle had turned into a flood and warning klaxons were blaring in his head.

"Thank you for the advice," Kei said calmly. "I will definitely give it the consideration it deserves."

"Um...right," Hazou said. He looked around, hoping to find a distraction. "I, ah, have a thing, that I need to do. Now. Yes. It's over there, away from here. Excuse me." He hurried off to where Akane was running through kata on the far side of the camp.
Do you mean this? Because Hazou discussed a scout.

But no seriously, Hiashi's base is now broken three ways.

He's only got support of half the clans, and if he slips up then Asuma might become Hokage In All But Name. And now he's also got the unified force of the clanless led by Naruto, Keiko, and Ami, all strongly affiliated with the Goketsu.

He may be wearing the Hat but he's miles away from being in control of Konoha, and everyone knows it.
This is why I proposed directly advocating for uplift a few days back. As I said then, and Naruto echoed in this update, Leaf needs unity. Internal strength, through better economy and education — if we try, we can sell him on this.

But first, we need to sell this plan to everyone who had a stake in Asuma's election.

Also, I'd like to see Naruto have a "I'm not angry, just disappointed" talk with Tsunade. Skip denial, anger, bargaining, and move to acceptance. Naruto feels genuinely betrayed, and this cannot stand if we are to collaborate with Tsunade in the future. (If there's an interlude vote, I will probably vote for this.)

I haven't spoken to the others yet, but I'm very confident in the following answers. Take them as WOG unless told otherwise.
@Velorien and @OliWhail , let me know if you disagree.

I'm writing "see caveat above" on everything so that it doesn't accidentally get quoted out of context.

Yes and no, respectively. See caveat above.

Respectively: The following is all you know. Yes. No. HDK but probably not. HDK. See caveat above.

No, that was Cat. I'm pretty sure she's dead.

?? I'm reasonably sure that Panashe was part of the tessera contract. She's the ninja-esque one who was always subtly mocking the standard Pangolin troops for being dumb meatheads. She snuck up on that guy in the Swamp of Mild Inconvenience and threatened his life in a very British way while telling him where to come in order to trade.

Cat being dead makes me very sad.

Are we prioritising breadth or depth in exploration (ie. cursory examination of many rooms to get an overall feel, or slow-but-detailed examination of a few rooms in a clear-and-hold strategy to ensure no surprises cut us off from the rear)?
We're clearing the thing top-to-bottom and uncatalogued all of the shinies.

Do we bring Jiraiya's letter to Orochimaru in with us? Risks losing it in a catastrophic flight/fight situation, but may be handy on the extreme off-chance we run into the guy down there. I don't think it can be stored safely in a seal given it's secured with a seal itself?
I don't think Orochimaru would murder us on sight.

If someone's wounded enough to need to return, but can do so safely, do we split the party and continue without them, or all go back together and call it a wasted afternoon? How bad do things have to get before we just throw enough explosives to collapse the area and pull a Brave Sir Robin straight out?

Thats a good question. Thoughts thread? I think we can safely send one or two non-spookily injured folks back, but if theres anymore than that things start becoming dicey.
Do we have an emergency escape plan in case of [bad things]?

Could use Tunnel Excavation no jutsu maybe? Should probably set up some callsigns for emergency evac too.

"This is all my fault," Mari, whom he'd only barely coaxed out of her bedroom, said hollowly. "I held back."
"I held back," Mari repeated. "I could have done more. Ami even asked why I wasn't doing more."
"I held back, Hazō. Nothing to do with her. I could have prevented all of this if I'd only tried harder."

This is actually very hopeful. Our worst case scenario here was Mari going full sociopath with the help of her kinjutsu and destroying herself in the process. That she held back means that there was a sliver of decency she was able to hold onto even in mission-mode, having surrendered her moral agency.

What we need to do now is reinforce this. Tell her that her being able to hold back is proof that she's not irredeemable, and that she has changed, and can change even more.

[X] Action Plan: Its Basement Time Motherfuckers

@MMKII Thoughts:
  • Naruto's been in combat for a non-trivial period of time, we could ask him if he's been chakra drained before, and if that went badly for the drainer. If he has, and the drainer didn't have issues, we could have Noburi transfer Naruto's (insane) chakra reserves to the rest of us without issue.
  • It's debatable, but Naruto might have more information about legal nonsense regarding this.
  • Ask Snake if the ANBU have detailed information about the basements, since they cleared it down after Orochimaru's defection.
  • Could we get some defensive plates in storage seals, that can be used as impromptu defense? Like what Shikamaru did in his match when he revealed his Mokuton.
  • Any chance we could dump some earbusters in if we fight? Or before we fight?
  • We should get some (non-threatening) wild animals and set them loose in the basement. It's completely possible Orochimaru set traps that only go off on living, non-clone beings.

I said nothing about subsequent life expectancy. Or what Orochimaru does with his revenants, for that matter.
Oh, rip.

Fair enough, @Velorien brings a good point, If we run into Uncle Oro we should :

  • In case of Snake Uncle: offer him some food and let him know we have his pardon.
    • We are very glad to see you! Would you like a hug?
    • Can you teach us biosealing and necromancy?

Excuse me, I think Kagome has the rights to that invention! I can add it though.

Ah right, I meant to add that in. Thanks for the reminder.

We should get some (non-threatening) wild animals and set them loose in the basement. It's completely possible Orochimaru set traps that only go off on living, non-clone beings.
Lets use some squirrels.

Wait. No.

Uhhhh. Lets throw some chickens in, yeah.

Oh yeah @MMKII You should state we use Mist Drain. I know you say enemies get drained, but I was thinking that we use it as a scouting tool: dump some Misterators to fill the basements and Noburi locates and possibly drains anything with chakra. That's not us.

In dark CQC spaces it's probably better to use Water Whip and Hozuki's Mantle, to be honest; using Misterators carries the serious risk that we're worsening vision conditions for all of our allies when we really really really need that not to be the case.

Misterators don't actually reduce vision by...well, pretty much any reasonable amount. Otherwise the tipserator incident would have happened in truth.

Some more things:

If we find [useful things], do we leave them there for later study (and risk losing them entirely if we need to explosively bug out), or bring them with us (and risk spooky stuff in our backpacks)?

If we find spooky live specimens in particular, do we kill them on sight just to be safe, or leave them alive for further study?

If it turns out that the only thing down there is a bunch of leaky pipes and/or Orochimaru's secret stash of pornographic ukiyo-e doujinshi, how do we minimise the inevitable ribbing we get from our family for our massively paranoid approach to all this?

What do we expect to get from the basement and how much do we think it'll help us? We already have money and political power (if Mori's plan pans out). Why not just start the uplifting?

[X] Action Plan: Its Basement Time Motherfuckers

I was hoping to do some assasination prep, but there's not really room for it and there are some things that we might find in the basement that render it superfluous, so I can wait.

The quest has gone through a long talky/economics/politics phase, and it's time for some punching to switch things up a bit.

The Spooky Basement has been a dangling plot thread for a long long time, will (hopefully) take only a day or two to progress and act as a palate cleanser.

Everyone is, for a change, together and largely free of short-term dangers and responsibilities.

Once we get started on Uplift things and potentially split the party to maximise efficiency, pausing them to resolve the Basement thread becomes a lot more difficult to push through as a plan. Better to get it out of the way before starting a long, spoon-heavy, multi-plan endeavour.
