"What makes you think you can outdo them?"

"I don't, and I'm not trying to," you retort. "Egrimm and I studied the Windfall because Dwarven artifice let us reach it. Every paper I have written owes much to doing so behind Dwarven walls and while referencing Dwarven tomes. When Waaagh Birdmuncha died, it was not just me, it was as much Runelord Kragg and High Priest Gunnars. If I am going to see further, it will be by standing on the shoulders of Dwarves."

The more loops you go through with trying to cast magic, the lower the ceiling you get on the other end when you try to do the thing.

Personally, Im looking forwards to seeing how Divine Magic interacts with it - My personal expectation is depending on the God in question, we get a relevant one of the 8 winds - Which in and of itself would prove interesting indeed.

I noticed. I just didn't feel it was important enough to bring up.

Also unlike The guy who made the quote, we're not low-key dissing the Dwarves.

Well my first priority for future research is Windherder, to the surprise of no one. :V

I think we're up to around 4500 pages of not trying out our groundbreaking skill.

Funny thought: How many Wizard Lords have, tucked away in their personal vaults, a set of notes detailing their attempts to wield a second wind via their own? None have ever published, because articles and burning at the stake, and thus there is nothing to tell new Wizard Lords that it has already been tried and proven to not work.

Tongs are dead, Long live the Stones.

On the bright side at least this permanently clears something that would have added substantially to AP hell what with all its possible applications and things to learn about it.

Alas the Tongs took quite the hit here. Looks like Mathilde got over focused on necromancy method which forces things along and creates dhar. It actually looks like her necromancy knowledge hurt more than it helped in the end.

We know that different magical winds can work together in high concentrations without creating dhar (like the ash storms) so I hoped Mathilde would take some inspiration from there. I suspect that would be the path to a proper success, starting by emulating natural multi-wind formations. Maybe someone in the future will give it a shot and be successful.
Just to note, with all the clarifications by the QM, Tongs is likely a dead end because it tries to force interaction between different Winds, which inevitably results in Dhar.

What you're describing with "natural multi-wind formations" is something Windherder would cover instead.
The Winds would be working be in unison without being forced together.

In my understanding Windherder does not work by either forcing the winds together or gently massaging them into natural cooperation, it works by keeping the winds the away from one another, each doing their own thing to make the whole work. That is how the Eye of Gazul can have one tower for Shadow, one for Fire and one for the Heavens. What makes Windherder the trait special is that instead of needing several hundred feet between the enchanted foci you can have several inches on a belt, or a bell, or a magic whistle etc...

...Whilst I don't think it's going to be Lifelong (If only because we're only 36), yeah I underestimated the amount of time. Got 'Elfcation' confused for it instead of Naggarythe

Giant Spiders and Small Children do not, in fact, Mix.

I considered Mathilde's age and the fact she is so filled with Ulgu she's no longer bound to biological mortality. I still think anything Waystone related will be a lifelong project.

I find it quite surprising that Kazrik is so very high on the list. Like yes, I am biased since he isn't one pf my choices, but even beyond that, I would have never expected him to be at the very top beyond all the more expected fan favorites. And it's not just people who hoped thad he'd win in a certain constellation to round out the selected trio with baseline Dwarfiness. I saw some people vote for Kazrik exclusively.

Personally I don't even know what makes him special among the Councillors or Dwarves up for selection or what makes him a good choice alongside King Belegar. He also seems to have the least interesting add-ons. No Cult and the population of a different Hold that we haven't visited (nor plan to) that endured in isolation since before the use of guns.

But again, those complaints are relatively trivial. I am much more surprised by him taking first place than by him taking one of the top three places.

Kazrik has three major things going for him:
  • His Umgongr trait meaning that he's genuinely interested in humans and thus likely to make a good impression / be a pleasant interaction for Eike.
  • Karak Azul is a really excellent object lesson for the value of trade and the limits of autarky. They were isolated for thousands of years and were managing, but there was a lot of stuff they wanted from the outside world and they hit the markets of Barak Varr like a hurricane. As such, this might help impress on Eike the societal value of what the EIC does in facilitating trade, beyond simply making money for the shareholders.
  • Maybe King Kazador will show up and that would kick ass.

>Literally the diplomat of the Karak EIC will have the closest ties with
>Doesn't have any useful traits

He is pretty swell. He is the epitome of a dwarf that doesn't necessarily understand humans completely but is enthusiastic to meet and work with them, which makes him a great softball candidate to introduce to Eike so that she is not too intimidated.

Yep, I like these ones. They are kinda the values we want to impress on her.

I'm afraid that we on't have many traditionalists ere in K8P though.

It won't though? The EIC's go to middleman is Francesco. And Eike isn't here to network with the local government at 11 years old.

That said, I can agree with you that he has merits as a softball Dwarf representative. I just am not all that enthused about presenting the Karak Azul Dwarves to Eike when we have a chance of visiting one of the Dwarven Cults (which we haven't much visited ourselves) instead.

Still, he's a fine enough choice. I'm just surprised that some people want to see him so much that they don't vote for anything else and also that he outpaced Belegar and Panoramia. Like, I haven't seen any enthusiastic fanboying for him and there's been at least a bit of that among all choices from place two till place nine.

Mathilde: Why does EIC exist?
Eike: To make money.
Mathilde: Accurate, but shallow answer. More specifically, why do i, a grey magister sworn to poverty and servant of the empire allow EIC to exist and gather the power and wealth it does?
Eike: huh?
Mathilde: EIC serves the empire, in people it employs, in taxes it pays, in goods it delivers and services it provides. And as long as EIC continues to serve the empire, it will be allowed to exist. And if one day it stops serving the empire, well, EIC was not the first to fulfill its function.

11 year old: I understand (I don't think understand but I don't want my hands racked with a ruler)

Thats actually exactly what she is here to do thought?

She is 11, that makes her old enough by Empire standards to go work entry level job at their chosen profession. This is an internship for her, of course she is here to network it and learn more so she is ready to take over once Wilhelmina kicks the bucket.

But that doesn't mean she is old enough to understand abstracts: an 11 year old can learn to make a horse shoe, and remake that horse shoe if you ask them too.

but they aren't able to extrapolate why a Shoed house shoe is symbolic with wealth, or used as a sign of good luck, if you asked them without telling them beforehand.

while it's a little out of date, it's still roughly good.

I don't think Mathilde is asking much of abstract thought in my hypothetical.
"Harm the empires interests, get destroyed" is not a hard concept to understand i think.

Furthermore if you are being raised as the 'heir' to a large and successful company, you are expected and required to be able to handle mature topics at a younger age - regardless of whether or not it is fair.

Eike: To make money.
From precedent, the answer she parrots should already have moved on from that, even if she doesn't fully grasp it. "To make money" would be more expected if she was being raised by her father.
She nods firmly. "When oma retires. Going to Keep The Wagons Rolling and help everyone by getting the things where they need to be." You can practically hear the capital letters in her voice as she parrots a phrase she probably heard from Wilhelmina.

You smile. "That's one way to describe what we do."

"Oma says that you're here to Keep Us Honest and it's a good thing that I'd be in charge because if my father was you'd have to shoot him." She eyes the revolvers on your hip curiously. "Would you?"
