Oh boy, we got Lady Magister? Excellent! Now that we've made it into the highest echelons of power of the Colleges, it is time to enact our secret plan: to... um... hold up, we don't have a secret plan? What kind of Grey Wizard are we?
I mean, I have a secret plan ready if no one else does.

It involves breaking into and/or out of a pocket dimension, daring adventures into unknown lands and a heist against at least one deity. You in?

Isn't our latitude such that we're in a place with sufficiently low seasonal variation that even during what passes for winter plants are still happily growing?

We're a long way south of the Empire.

I'd imagine the utility of the greenhouse would mostly be as a place where the usual constraints that Pan is dealing with are relaxed- the soil is sufficiently nutritious, the ambient humidity can be high enough to support non-arid plant life, and the extreme altitude can be compensated for somewhat. I'm not voting for it immediately, but it would allow cultivation of all sorts of exotics that would not grow on a desert mountain.

Personally, I'm picturing a tower of glass and flowers, stuffed full of medicine and poisons, where Pan spends much of her time curled up with a book during the winter. It would also likely serve as a nursery and laboratory for creating varietals that are needed for ecological niches in K8P, but not resistant to the conditions present. Or even bring up some tropical plants... Are tropical plants as attractive to ghyran as northern plants? I ask because getting something from a biome where the winds don't blow and bringing it into an are where they are omnipresent could give some very odd effects, and would be a cool research path for Pan to explore.

I'm in favor of the observation tower now, the greenhouse tower when we get back, and the smoke-and-mirrors tower after we return from Ulathan with new insights and some time to process the new shadow-dimension we've just been exposed to, but thats just personal opinion. Greenhouse now would allow it's use as a nursery this upcoming planting season.

Oh, damn, a lot happened while I was sleeping, including, but not limited to, one awesome promotion scene. Hope we get a celebration for the Okral leaving and Dwarven reaction to our new rank. Now to catch on with my list of things I wanted to comment on or reply to.

Mathilde doesn't know. The criteria are loyalty, ability, reliability, and experience, but beyond that the decision is by design entirely opaque.

Really? Thought we were on the council now, if we do not have access, who does? I imagine that it being a unilateral decision of the patriarch wouldn't fly, plus the other grey magisters said "we"...

New theory: ulgu trickery is going on, so that the criteria for the choice are opaque even to those making the choice. Its the only reason I can think of Mathilde wouldn't have access on the LM selection process with her new rank.

TBF, if there's anything in Warhammer that's "No save, just die", it's being dumped in the Grey College's backyard where Algard and company can take their sweet time murdering you.

That doesn't solve vampire immortallity

We don't know how large this place is, or even if the concept of size has any meaning. Wherever they go I doubt they cause any trouble, otherwise Pit of Shades would be much less used since it would be merely delaying the problem of an enemy army as opposed to eliminating it.

That also doesn't solve vampire immortallity, just stall them a lot.

I will admit, I am deeply concerned at how many death flags were raised in this chapter.

Good and bad thing about quests is that death flags matter not to the dice. See Abelheim, not one flag to his name and yet he got yeeted.

Gnomes are all masters of Ulgu due to their meta-uncertainty. :V
Not sure if you know or not but gnomes are in fact masters of Ulgu. They have a special affinity for the stuff, being able to work with it a lot easier than human wizards can and all gnomes are at least a little magical. Source is WFRP 4e: Rough Nights and Hard Days.

Maybe Gnomes are actually Ulgu dragons, they just do not seem dragony to misdirect....

Obviously this is counting our chickens a bit early, since we don't even know what the situation will be if/when we come back from the Chaos Wastes, but in general once we're back I'd like to:

I'd still really push for Arcane Khazalid as well. I suspect it would have interesting synergies with Gazul Lore that even other dwarves might not have, as the Cults of Thungni and Gazul may well not cross-train.

I also think that there are other things that would be very valuable to work on before the elfcation. Both intellectual and more militant. For example, I'd like to look into finding a way for her to stash her staff in liminal space before we go, as currently using it and our greatsword just seems like it would be unbearably awkward.

Personally, I'm picturing a tower of glass and flowers, stuffed full of medicine and poisons, where Pan spends much of her time curled up with a book during the winter. And that sounds like Panoramia would take up a more and more prominent part of the narrative as a result of this. That's really not attractive to me.

IIRC we could burn a Great Deed to clear one of the four conditions for the promotion that we did not fulfill, so I doubt that. Fun theory, though. :p

Wheee! Lady Magister Mathilde Weber! We did it, and it didn't even take a great deed! :D

@BoneyM, how much would it cost to buy a pair of goggles? Something to protect our eyes from the inevitable smoke and ashes when we use our dragon flask?

We're a long way south of the Empire. You don't need greenhouses to grow crops in winter in Egypt, for example.
"The Halflings already calculated our latitude by human reckoning; we're at about sixty percent north by the Praag-Norden wasteline, or about forty by the theoretical Northern Chaotic Pole, roughly equal to Verezzo."
We're at latitude 40N, assuming the theoretical Northern Chaotic Pole corresponds to the geographical north pole. This roughly corresponds to Philadelphia or Columbus in the United States, Beijing in China, and Madrid in Spain. We're definitely not outside of the seasonal variation zone.
And that sounds like Panoramia would take up a more and more prominent part of the narrative as a result of this. That's really not attractive to me.
Please chill. You're not happy with the romance vote outcome. I get it. My preferred outcomes didn't happen either. But that ship sailed, the vote happened, she's going to be a significant part of the narrative at this point no matter what. Grumpyposting about the subject every time she comes up just makes the thread more unpleasant.

This plan actually has a surprising lack of Dhar for one of my schemes. It only takes a bit at the end, and that's assuming that we don't find any other method of housing a disembodied soul.

I know, I was shocked too.
We've had the solution to that problem literally inside the palm of Mathilde's hand since we rode off to take Karak Eight Peaks.

There's lot more that goes into temperature and seasonal changes than latitude.
Air currents, water currents, moisture, weather, etc...

But that ship sailed, the vote happened, she's going to be a significant part of the narrative at this point no matter what.

Well, that's debatable, imho. I am refering to the "significant" epithet. One can be in a relationship without it being a top priority in their lives.

It's maybe not a romance that books are written about, but it's still dating.

Mind you, I can live with either outcome, with Panoramia being Mathilde's significant other in the full sense of the word, and with Panoramia being her g.f. of the moment, with their dating being something exciting and fun but not a sine qua non.

Describing all attempts to keep the amount of narrative spade she occupies from continually increasing in projorative terms like this is actually what makes the thread more unpleasant.

Someone disagreeing with you about the future direction of the quest should be something voters can take on their stride.

This is Mathilde's first relationship. The default assumption should be that it crashes and burns after a few months. That's the normal course of things. It's only on SV and SB where the first person you date is the only person you ever date. It's part of what makes waifuing in quests so problematic.
