Mathile had a moment when she went to the imperial zoo were she basically said, 'every young wizard dreams of the day they get to ride a magical flying pony.'

I personally would like to give Mathys inner child her magical flying pony.
I'm sold.
Let's get a magical flying pony.
Not for combat use, we have shadow steed and can teleport (and spend a lot of time in confined areas).
But Mathilde's inner child deserves her pony.

A capital M Monster like a griffon should probably be capable of doing so pretty trivially unless she uses her sword.
The Belt increases our toughness, and would tear their face off too.

Not exactly a refutation of it tearing our face off first, but a refutation of the spirit of the statement.

We could actually probably learn a lot from it, too, since apparently they literally ride the Winds of Magic. Also, we wouldn't have to borrow a gyrocopter anytime we wanted to go anywhere although our carrying capacity would be limited.

they are also very fast, not just in a straight line, but darting. which is really, really good for big battles.

and unlike us, counterspell won't make them drop from the sky like a stone.

I was against getting enchanted/runed guns. Mathilde's already got her own spellcasting for firepower, and if that fails her guns already serve the very-important role as back-up weapons. Making her guns magical means they could be vulnerable to whatever shuts down Mathilde's spellcasting; essentially trading reliability for firepower when we most need the former.
Rune of Striking would make you better at physically hitting people with the actual gun.

But this? This is perfect! This is a backup plan to our backup plans! When she's been magically surpressed, lost her sword, and run out of bullets, even the greatest foes would believe Mathilde defeated. But then she'll whip out her secret holdout pistol and smack them with it! They'll never see it coming. :V

That too, yeah. Much easier to assassinate leaders if we can just fly at them. Granted, we could teleport, it that's more dangerous if there are any enemy spellcasters.

also, mostly unrelated thought, but it Seems like this turn will be spent almost entirely on magical research, when you stop and think about it. AV, enchanting, and the Coin, from what I've seen, are practically locked in, with things like Ulgu Tongs, Powerstone creation, and Arcane Khazalid being fought over. And yet I haven't seen any other major actions suggested that doesn't have some sort of Magical aspect to it. Am I missing anything, or are we really going to go full research and learning mode, barring any unforeseen projects on Belegar's part.

Thread madness is at it again...
I've seen actual historians uncritically apply legalistic principles to historical Empires and be lead into all sorts of weird rabbit holes by it. It's a good argument, it's just one that requires a more modern society to work.
Big thing about legalistic principles as applied to nationstates are:
-Continuity of state - The longer a state exists, the more its laws would seem to be a natural part of the world to its components.
--The Empire of Sigmar is only very technically continuous, if at that.

-Supremacy of state - Laws which can be overridden or broken with impunity by powerful individuals are intrinsically weaker as social constructs
--The Empire of Sigmar has many many such laws.

-Density of state - You'd need to actually pack all those people together, so that they actually have to follow the laws on a day to day basis, rather than farm and really not have to care about the law more than a couple of times a year.
--The Empire of Sigmar consists of a lot of untapped wilderness and numerous agricultural smallholders.

So basically the prerequisites aren't really there, and the laws are mostly there for when people of similar status and pull go bang into each other.

this is because Magical Research never survives contact with BoneyM, we will be put on the clock and/or given low hanging fruit or something to spend AP on.

I would be very surprised if if all the research goals actually make it into the final plan

I'm getting a bit sick of gacha assignments, so hopefully. If there was some actually interesting, multiple years long magical thing we could be doing then I wouldn't mind being given yet another project, but it just sort of feels like a flavorful AP tax right now.

Counterspells would just temporarily disable the Magic gun I believe, leaving it a mundane firearm anyway. I think if whatever we're fighting can suppress a runed handgun we're in quite a lot of trouble, and if they can suppress Branalhune and the Quest isn't automatically over, it won't be because we pistol-whipped them really well. Basically these runes/enchantments wouldn't decrease their value as holdout weapons in the worst case.

...It would be pretty funny though.

Well not all of them, we don't have the AP for that, but as long as one of the three major things we could be given—Bok, AV, and MMAPP—is chosen, then Every AP should be research. The only possible other thing I can see at the moment is dealing with Marienburg, and that's... unlikely, unless we actively push for it. Even if Belegar wanted or needed to get involved he probably has better people for it.
Although I feel like I'm forgetting something... was Marienburg the fourth possible object, or was it another one?

No, but if you're going to go to the trouble of doing so you tend to pick something of decent quality and take good care of it.
I'll be honest. I have no idea how long a frequently used historical crossbow usually lasts before repairs become pointless. That's even more true when it comes to a Dwarven rifle or handgun that is regularly fired in anger.

IIRC also this would be the Grandmaster's Best Effort analysis. Don't count the chickens before they hatch, the solution space includes:
-Grandmaster figures out how it works, but the how it works would involve his Guild secrets. Roll to see how well the archconservative rationalizes this.
-Grandmaster is willing and able to explain how it works, but the Empire lacks the technical ability to build it. Put it into the Engineers long term project bin.
-Grandmaster doesn't get why this mess even works, did an Urk build it? Is able to come up with closest approximation.

Hence why Boney never commits to a specific answer on whether it can be reverse engineered, only that we can hire somebody to look into it and give their best effort, accounting for their extant loyalties.

I can live with the first two of these options, if we can buy the components or black boxes from the dwarfs to compensate. I suspect enough people in-setting would appreciate having more steam tanks to go around that we can navigate most of these hazards.

Part of the reverse-engineered instructions would include something like "buy a proper boiler from us and whack it in there". It's not going to have Appendix A: One Weird Trick To Get Us To Uplift You (We Hate This!) that spills the Dwarven understanding of steam power just because one insane manling in another polity stumbled across an incomplete and incredibly dangerous understanding of it.

A quibble; Leonard di Miragliano was from Tilea, but I believe he was employed by the Empire when he came up with the steam tanks. If we're going with 'what you do on the clock for your employer belongs to your employer' understanding the 'in another polity' part of your statement not apply.

I remember when the one dwarf engineer from the takedown of castle drakenhoff casually mentioned that while a round shot can be accurate ala a sling stone an arrow head will always fly truer I wonder if she ever mentioned this to the people in Nuln or other places to get the cannon balls upgraded.

I kinda want to do a social to check in on Narfi at some point. Touch base with someone who was there for us when we needed them, maybe do Zhufbar some favors as a token of friendship. I'm sure they have some matters that could benefit from the attention of a Mathilde.

These map to her known feats. You probably can't make staves without a certain minimum grounding in enchantment.

Well now I'm thinking about making our staff and waiting until after we've had powerstone classes and gone as far as the college can take us on enchanting. Dragonbone staff with an inner core of either AV or liquid crystal mist topped with a power stone the size of a child's fist, glyphs of power etched around its exterior? Seems like a pretty wizardly staff.

@BoneyM can we put Mockery of Death into a bullet?

Would you be satisfied by shooting someone and then mocking them about their death?

Well, that puts it into context how excited he is by the AV that he only tested it for a few months.

He may be unclear how long we've been testing it ourselves. We've been working with it for years off and on, but not as a full time thing and most of that was on safety related stuff, which is what he saw us present him. He may have assumed we weren't sharing the other 95% of our work because it's not relevant or it's guild secrets but we have a better understanding of AV than we do.

Limiting factor is skill, not gun. We're only OK with pistols.

I'm willing to put some AP towards becoming a better pistolier. I doubt enough other people are, AP hell being what it is, but I'm certainly not opposed to working our way to getting one or more runic pistols for our elfcation and blowing away impressing our hosts with what we can do with them.

I wonder if having a third revolver with Rune of the Unknown would be workable...

Quest spitballing for a stealth gyrocopter

"And we could have done it too, if it wasn't for that darn GM and their attention to the rules and fluff!" /scooby-doo villain

Still hoping to go through with the project at some point, but I doubt we'll be able to get it started in the near future.

So I just had a random thought, but you know what the best part of the Balrog cloak would be? Sheer irony. Just wait until we have to hold a bridge with it.
Also, I wonder when someone will make a post for collecting enchantment ideas, like we have for spells and long term plans. I would do it myself, but don't have nearly the dedication or interest required.

I love the idea of the Balrog Cloak, I just an unsure about us being the one to use it due to possibly interfering with our magic armor and introducing near our person raises the likelihood of dhar. I'd rather give it to a martial champion like a Greatsword or a knightly Grandmaster who'd make good use of it.

"He doesn't exist, shut up about it!"
-Decius XXIII

Though by enchanting a necromantic Raise Dead spell into the bullet, we could plausibly make a reverse Mockery of Death where the target keeps moving after we blasted a hole in their chest.

Almost the same thing, right?

And if you shoot a corpse it could be like the Regrowth spell from Lore of Life, so really it's pulling double duty here.

On steam tanks, that goes right into the "Not Mathilde's job." bucket for me. It seems OOC and very much meta-gaming for her to even consider them. These are her favours, not the Empire's favours. I can see asking for the dwarves to build the Grey College a Room of Calamity.

One of her fellow councilors (we are told) has a steam tank body pillow and King Belegar has a distinct preference to spend money instead of lives where possible, so obtaining steam tanks for him in such a way as to strengthen the Karaz Ankor's ties to the Empire seems like it's in everyone's interests. I grant you it's not working magic in the name of the King, but neither was figuring out the We, not really (though it certainly helped), nor was helping Roswita (though we did).

I'm totally not doing this to get Oswald to propose to her out of the blue.

So probably between four and eight hundred on second evaluation. One half rounded down here is about 50, and so a need to push the ducklings to improve on magic stats as a group. Perhaps Petty/lesser magic refresh lessons? If we can bump them up one or two points each we can probably move close to 3000 soldiers anywhere in the old world at need.

I mean we can send Max back to school to learn more spells to fill out his spellbook, so that's one option we have direct control over. Not sure what we can do for Johann, I'm sure we can bump his Magic up a bit more (I don't think he has a staff?) but I don't know if there are enough spells left in his spellbook to eke out another +magic for him. The ducklings seem well enough to manage though, as Greta's ambitious, Adela's setting down roots and we can pester her if we think she's resting on her laurels (she wants to work enchantment into engineering, which is a fine thing, but will need some help getting to the higher levels of the craft) and we just had a chat with Hubert and he's onboard with becoming more of a wizard. So with the possible exception of Panoramia who's up for magister soon anyway, I don't think there's much we can/should do on this point.

I'd be okay with buy the Colleges their own Rooms of Calamity if the AV sale is as profitable as Biney made it sound. But, I think that's something we should wait till we are a Lord Magister to do.

Why? T-posing as our first notable Lord Magister act.

So you want to be a Lord Magister? That's a fine thing. /meme

I'm okay with that, mostly because I don't know how much runesmith favor it'll cost to complete this project and I suspect we won't get it right out the gate, so it may very well be that it'll take us at least that long to get enough AV accrued to be able to call that project in.

You know, all this talk of runed guns has me thinking we're doing it all wrong. Don't you know the best gun in the setting already exsists? All we need to do is steal one of those sniper jezzails! And look, Mat can even use one, since she can handle warpstone due to that nice belt Kragg gave us. Mat using it to wield Skaven weapons will no in way cause any problems!

While I shudder to think of choosing to incorporate Skaven tech into Karak Eight Peaks' defenses, I am curious about the utility of having halfling Jezzail teams to help with the wall of lead. I daresay that between Titus Muggins, Dreng and (if necessary) Belegar, they'd be willing to entertain the possibility of Jezzail teams, and if Araby can make them Zhufbar can make better.

His hands are beyond full already.

"You know what they say, the reward for a job well done is more work."
"Stop laughing, Weber, this isn't funny."

So while he may be interested in the abstract, he's got more than enough on his plate to keep him plenty busy for the foreseeable future and he doesn't want to add more to it for one of the Loremaster's pet projects? Is that a fair assessment?

The second revolver is because three Runes of Fire work just fine on a gun and don't interfere with its operations. Having a hand flamethrower with fire this strong is pretty good. The closest thing the Colleges have is Breathe Fire, but I'm not sure if it hits Damage 8 normally in Divided Loyalties or not, and unlike dwarf runes it needs recharging. A pistol that can swap between being a normal pistol and an anti-horde flamethrower with surprisingly strong flames is pretty darn good.

Might I entice you with a third revolver with the runes for damage, accuracy and Rune of the Unknown?

So, do people feel like buying a War Trained Pegasus (13 CF with a handler to train us), a Gyrocarrige that we could further tinker with (16 DF), or perhaps a Griffon (1 Great Deed)?

Personally I see a lot of promise on a custom Gyrocarriage. Add an Illusion so it's invisible and silent, Aqshy stuff on the boiler for increased range and power, use @Andres110 extensive research on guns and enchantments to add something cool to the clatter gun (something Azyr, perhaps? A flying machine should trivially recharge it).

And then we can have Gotri do some Radical stuff on it, too.

In general I'm in the gyro faction, but I don't think we're in position to do much with a gyro quite yet. At a bare minimum I'd like to get our enchanting up, get some less ambitious multi-wind enchantments done before trying our hand at the gyro, send one of the Undumgi to train up on How To Gyrocopter and track down where I vaguely recall purchasing a gyrocopter being something we could do in coin. Most of that is stuff that we will want to do even if we don't get a gyro, and what isn't is AP spent by someone else (though it might cost us Dwarf Favor).

That said, I'm wondering what a second gyrocarrier built as an on-station gunship full of soldiers with Stirland Repeaters listening to Fortunate Thane would take. Separate from the stealth gyro, of course, but it seems like it'd be a way to have mobile, local superiority of force to just wreck stuff.

Why bother when we have unlimited access to the Karaz Ankor's gyrocopter network? It seems like a solution in search of a problem, when we have a better solution to the same problem already.

I agree that getting a gyro for our own use when we already have access to the gyro network doesn't make sense. As I look at it, the stealth gyro project is something that would add capabilities useful for KA and Empire 'special forces', but wouldn't directly help Mathilde for the work she put into it near as much as something like improving her spellbook or developing her swordsmanship. But that's okay, we're not just Mathilde Weber, we're also Mathilde Weber, AGENT OF THE EMPIRE! so I like to do nice things for them every so often.

You know, like a cat dropping a mouse on your doorstep every so often because obviously the humans are just terrible hunters and need help.

K8P needs a Pegasus herd.

@BoneyM How difficult would it be to import or entice a herd of pegasai to Karak Eight Peaks? Seems like something the Ambers would have given some thought to, and they're not uncommon in the Grey Mountains if I recall.

Wait we can have Griffon?

H0ly shit Griffon want WANT WANT WANT WANT

You know, like a cat dropping a mouse on your doorstep every so often because obviously the humans are just terrible hunters and need help.
Pretty sure the Skaven count as rats, not mice. And Vampires are bats, but that's close enough to a bird, right? Meanwhile the Orcs are just a hair ball coughed up from fur and feathers that got stuck down our throat.

So while he may be interested in the abstract, he's got more than enough on his plate to keep him plenty busy for the foreseeable future and he doesn't want to add more to it for one of the Loremaster's pet projects? Is that a fair assessment?

That's about it.

The Rune of the Unknown is only known by Kragg, and he is not a radical Zhufbar Runesmith.

Tamed ones would be very expensive, wild ones would be very difficult. Those that live in the World's Edge Mountains tend to be skittish and untrusting.

...It would be pretty funny though.

I was just making a joke. Like you said, Mathilde can't be disarmed of Branalhune without physically removing our arms, at which point she's probably super dead. And putting Runes of Striking on a pistol is a dumb gimmick when anyone would be better served by putting them on a knife or similar item.

Mathilde is a Grey Wizard. The unexpected is power. Therefore, doing something unexpectedly stupid will be consequently unexpectedly powerful. Next update, vote for [ ] [DWARF] Triple Runes of Striking on the Marksdwarf Pistol.
Is it really the Rune of the Unknown then?

You have to be real sneaky to know what can't be known. More evidence that Kragg has a higher Intrigue score than Mathilde.

With rune of CleavingX2+Striking instead of StrikingX3, so we'd strike at WS6 S6 (instead of WS8 S4)

Pistol whipping, Mathilde Weber style. If you've got to do it, do it once, and make sure whatever you hit stays down.

Edit: although truth be told, i think we'd be better off with engineering runes: Rune of PenetratingX2 and Accuracy would make us shoot at BS5 with S6 shots (same as a Jezzail)

I got a threadmark! In light of that, commentary moved to spoilers for future thread-browsers.

In a tactical sense, it's probably easier to just teleport up to where we're trying to get to, or to throw something horrible and magical-y at whatever our aerial target is. Personal flight is for people who can do so under their own power.

Do you have any of the quotes on over-the-horizon teleportation spells, rituals, or artifacts? Because smoke and mirrors seems to be line of sight-ish which I'd read as ~10 miles max, and impossible March of the doomed soldier has some quirks like the 8-12 hour casting and the need to be able to walk to a place.

It just doesn't feel like teleportation is much of a thing in this world- which is good, because the difficulty of travel and the importance of distance really make a world fantasy instead of modern, to me.

Flying ponys are wicked fast, agile, small enough that they are hard to hit when in the air. and don't risk falling from a counterspell.

there is a reason that they are the preferred battle mount of wizards.

It's a pity that we are specc'ed to do the most damage in melee, rather than a glass canon artillery mage. I doubt it would improve us in battle, but as an insertion tool for an infiltrator it does sound good. Small by person-transporting flyer standards, quiet by gyrocopter standards. Plus...

Soizic and the ducklings stand in a line nodding very enthusiastically.

Johnna and Panoramia hold up a sign in the back saying 'Pegasu or bust!'

I would love to see a scene where... Actually, you know what?

For Luck

(Some years in the future)

[Jk] Respond to Prince Gotri's request for emergency aid to a team of expeditionary gromil miners from Zuftbar.
- [jk] Bring Panoramia

Karak Varn was quiet in the predawn light, peaks of weathered basalt shot through with glimmering white quartz. Mathilde frowned in concentration, eyes sharp and other senses... Well. Her mage sight showed nothing above the layers of smothering rock, neither greenskins nor the mining expedition that Zuftbar had sent. She heard wind, and the soft flapping of the white wings of her mount, and the occasional warm breath into her ear. She tasted adrenaline and ice. She felt the small body pressed against her from behind, arms wrapped around her waist and the chin on her shoulder, as Panoramia's head turned with small motions, searching as well.

"I see nothing," the jade Magister whispered. "Should we descend?"

Mathilde shivered, distracted by the tingle that ran down her spine as Panoramia's lips moved against her ear. Focus!

"It seems we must. I know Gotri would not call upon me like this unless something were very wrong, not for Zuftbar rather than Eightpeaks. I will press into the mines- plenty of ulgu at dawn's light, so best not to waste time; there'll be little too be found beneath. Will you take Huma and make is a campsite up on one of the mountains? I'll signal when I return, but this may be several days..."

"Of course!" Was the reply, breathed into her ear again. This time she did shiver. Focus!

The Pegasus the two of the rode circled slowly, wings still now and gliding. Still nothing stirred below.

Finally it's hooves touched rock and the graceful beast drew to a halt near a half-crumbled mineshaft, one of a half-dozen that were visible in the descent. Mathilde slipped off it's back absently handing the reins back as she began to consider the panapoly of spells to be cast before the bounty of the grey wind around her faded.

She was jarred from her thoughts by a hand reaching down and gathering her robe at her shoulder, pulling her back around. Panoramia leaned down and kissed her- searing, goosebump raising shivers- and whispered,

"For luck."

A smug smile and the two were off, Pegasus and jade wizard trotting into a deep wingbeat and a leap off a nearby cliff. Mathilde watched, breathless, until moments later the edge of the sun crested the far ridge.

Focus! Turning, she wove magic. She had a promise to keep.

________

Oh! Last thing I just remembered. That whole thing about doing disguise and silence and stuff like that on the gyrocopter? We already have Mathilde's Mystical Matrix! We can bind spells into living creatures already, and I bet with windherder and a bit more work, we can bind multiple. So a Pegasus that goes invisible on command, or has substance of shadows on it so we can go straight from flying through the underway, punch up through the roof, and be immediately aboveground! Possibilities.
