These are a group of dwarves who don't remember the apex of the dwarves. This, I think, is the prime mover of their optimism- for karak vlag, there is quite literally nowhere to go but up- every minute they're alive and free is the new best moment of their life. They're as much in for a culture shock as the rest of the Karaz ankor is.

Heheheheheheh. Lets see if we can get a few of these Rhunkit with us to the Waystone job. If nothing else, they might learn something and if ANY Dwarf is gonna get along with the Eonir it's them.
Jesus christ, sounds like playing with gasoline in a firework shop. There are a lot more ways that goes dramatically wrong and we accidentally insult what he views as proper runesmithing than it goes right.
Nah, just couch it as 'the ultimate trial under pressure' and 'blank slates ready to be shaped into greatness'.

Perhaps one day we would have dug our way to the surface along that underground river, or perhaps we merely vexed the sorcerations that imprisoned us by forcing it to cast a wider and wider net."

You consider that. "I think that would be the case," you say. "The enchantment that held the Karak was absorbing an enormous amount of magical energy to sustain itself, and when I cut it off, it seemed to fail more abruptly than the Daemons expected. They had been gathering forces from three of the Chaos Gods, either for a last-ditch assault on you or to try to restore the energy flow, but they fell to infighting when they were caught be surprise by a sudden translation to reality."

He grins savagely. "How wonderful, to have spoked Her wheel so effectively. I hope the next Everchosen arises within my lifetime so I can see it done at least once more."
They failed to account for dwarf...digging a hole.

...um now that I think about it maybe next time we should take Panoramia? According to their account, the Karak Vlag dwarfs were farming just whatever they found down there. She might like to take a look at the weird deep-underground stuff they were growing.
Thing is. They aren't blank slates. They've been doing runesmithing for years and they've probably been doing it wrong as far as Kragg is concerned. And I suspect they already have their own opinions about how things like the rule of pride aren't pragmatic.
Fair enough.

It's also super interesting that there was a hole in Vlag's entrapment, specifically around the river. Is this related to magic being weaker out at sea? I'd thought it was related to the lack of sapient life out on the ocean's surface, but does water hold some kind of repellant effect on the Aethyr? We should check with AV.

That might take some time, I doubt the Vlag inhabitants would take kindly to anyone poking around at their food supply any time soon.

There needs to be a water source for the karak to live. Think they put it ther on purpose

Kragg taking an apprentice from the Rune pokers would be a radical political move, which makes it very unlikely that he will get involved at all.

But if he did, he would do it while giving absolutely no fucks about what anyone else thinks.

Potential Heiress to a trade company as well. Seems like the start of Eike's Magda Wessen equivalent is likely to end up looking like some sort of self-insert fic.
Eike Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way is super-talented! So much that Lady Magister Mathilde Weber (best of the LMs (only until Eike is made one)(especially better than that Algard Dumbledore)) took her as a personal apprentice. She is also very rich - her mother (no her grandmother, she is very goth and thus an orphan) owns a big trading company.

But only a half-orphan, because her father is an Evil Prep!

I am torn between feeling envy at not thinking of this first or horror at the thought of this fictional atrocity being unleashed upon an unsuspecting world.

Well, so know what I want to spend our Vlagian Transcendent Boon on.

First we learn Arcane Khazalid using our AV favour from a traditional runesmith and then we lean on our legally a dwarf status and the Boon to get the runepokers to try to teach Mathilde. They are apparently willing to teach any dwarf that can learn. Now, Mathilde very likely can't learn how to craft runes, but that doesn't mean she can't learn anything. This could be particularly useful in the context of the Waystone project. It's much more useful to have as much of the knowledge in one mind as possible, than to have people collaborating who are reluctant to explain the principles of what they're doing.

I think people are getting a bit too excited about what Kragg might think - remember, he's the epitome of "if there isn't anyone worthy of the knowledge, it should die out", with the harshest and least compromising standards of all.

So I think it's extremely unlikely for him to be well disposed towards the idea of some apprentices having spread the half-baked basics across a full third of a hold.

They taught all those that could trace even the narrowest of lines to Thungni what little they knew, and now about a third of the Karak bear the title of Rhunkit, those that are able to interact with existing Runes and craft a very few simple ones.
Potentially interesting thought here: this either means that being a runesmith doesn't actually require the sort of mystical mutation required for Human/halfling/skaven mages and priests, despite it coming with magesense, OR that the population of Karak Vlag has at least 1/3rd people who have a windsense mutation.

The latter would normally be implausible, but with them actually being inside the Aethyr a growing proportion of windsense is far from the strangest outcome.

Yeah honestly i think it will be stuck in everyone's craw. Karak Vlag because Thungni's Cult won't want to send them any Runesmiths, Thungni's Cult because these dumbasses are running around doing everyone a heckin shame. We will see just how apt Thorgrim is as a diplomat, trying to soothe this mess.

Every single one of these is a descendant of Thungni in some fashion, just not very direct. I assume they are about as related to Thungni as a citizen of England is to Queen of England. And just like your average british person would not be considered to be viable inheritor to the British Throne, most of these rhunkits would be considered not closely enough related to become runesmiths. But times were hard and they honestly only needed very minor ability to work the runes, so they took in anyone who was even just barely qualified. I don't think lot of them actually have the gift in any appreciable measure.

Vlag stuck to the 'descent from Thungni' rule.

This update was amazing, and I'm very happy to see it!

On the other hand, those Dwarves really aren't what I was expecting. If I'd had to guess, I'd have predicted some radical rune bullshit used to keep water supplies available and to generate food. Not "lmao we're mass-producing tiny runes now". And their culture? What the fuck is that? I certainly wasn't expecting "Slaanesh can't tempt me, my polycule and I are too busy organising orgies and having our population increase during a daemonic siege, call me back when the next Everchosen turns up so I can enjoy wrecking his face". And they're some sort of oligarchy/democracy instead of a proper monarchy? They don't drink alcohol? What even is this?!?

The Grey College worldbuilding was nice, and Mathilde's relationship with Eike is very sweet. She really is trying to be a good mentor, isn't she? Thinking of Eike's needs and not just Wilhemina's plans... It's nice.

It's like every dwarf hold in Karaz Ankor has a clock that says "X days of decline and compromises and reduced quality of everything",
whereas Vlag dwarves have a clock saying "X Days of thriving despite crushing circumstances to spite that abomination"
