Just hypothetically, what would people think of that comparison? The Constitution costs an extra year to build, 20 more sr, and has one less Shield. On the other hand, it has superior Science and superior Presence. The Connie is slightly less of a bargain, but would anyone be tempted to simply do a refit option and start pumping out Connies as our primary light cruiser? They are very nice ships. I mean, they once handled Exploration duties. I'd feel pretty good about any mission that had a Constitution attending to it.

Heh. Funny how the Constitution has come up as a candidate for a 24th century light cruiser in two of the Trek quests on this forum.

In this quest, I just don't think the math stacks up. The Constitution is an expensive beast. If there were more Connies in the fleet, I'd think it was a great idea, but the idea of actually building new Constitutions? I think that's a bit mad.

It's hard if we want to keep the tonnage below 1mt due to the stat over scale penalty, but if you are willing to go above that we can design a cruiser (or mini-explorer) with 3 years build time but stats better than an excelsior and only somewhere between half and two thirds of the resource cost. Or go all the way to better than Ambassador for half of the cost of one of those (needs tier 4 design savings though so the project would take a few years). A tonnage in the region of 1.5 to 2mt seems to be a sweet spot.

Hmm... the mini explorer design idea seems like it would be better given your description. Could you PM me the build you're seeing?

You know, if the entire fleet counts towards science, we've hit our 85 target! 102 currently, I believe. 31 from our Explorers, 4 from the Constitution, 11 from the remaining two Excelsiors, 15 from the Constellations, 21 from the Oberths, and 19 from the rest.

You know, it would be nice if we could have it so that we build a dedicated platform for repair and refitting for vessels without them going into the shipyards. Maybe a dry dock equivalent?

Perhaps we can get some light applause at the next Snakepit.

One nice thing about going so Explorer heavy is that it keeps our science-to-combat ratio very high. That's actually the main thing that bothers me about the current Renaissance plans. I really dislike ships that have Science more than 1 below Combat. Keep Science high, always!

That's not something we'll ever be able to avoid with the Light Cruisers, they're not meant to have great Science facilities.

The highest they'll ever get is S4 on the Nebula.

Those aren't our responsibility, the Federation Colony Command is building and running them but they aren't part of Starfleet. It was just listed because we requisitioned one for the evacuation during the last crisis.

Does this behind-the-scenes non-resource colonization eventually have any impact? Like, is there any benefit to overall population increases over time?

Yeah, I think we should probably Max out at 5 5YM, maybe one or two over. But not by much.

If we cap out our 5YMs, then what do we do with the explorer corps we'd still be accruing?

I don't suppose there would be a way to spend PP to retrain explorer corps into standard starfleet? Or more relevantly right now, vice versa?

Prototype ships take 50% more time and resources.
No research project, it is just an ordinary Council project. Cost of new builds of the refitted design go up for the normal BR, but half the SR refit cost is tacked on to the price tag for new ships.

@OneirosTheWriter, more stuff to note in ship design tutorial (prototype) or quest mechanics (refits). Sorry if I'm being a bother

Don't forget that Explorer missions are hazardous and can involve crew casualties that need to be replaced.

Snakepit option, note my bolding:
Request Temporary Explorer Corps Recruitment Drive, 20pp, (Gain 2 Officer, 2 Enlisted, 2 Techs, PLUS Convert 2 Officer, 2 Enlisted, 2 Techs from normal service)

One thing I think we will need are some form of vessel in between standard and explorer type ships to look for phenomena or resources of note within federation space so that the explorers can focus on looking in areas outside of known space. Maybe call said type of assignment survey vessels?

2306.Q1 - To Boldly Go...
Starfleet Commander's Log, Stardate 22136.4

2306.Q1

Five years have come and gone. I've overseen the full missions of the Enterprise, Courageous, and Sarek, and will soon see them return to the stars. An entire Excelsior-class explorer has been conceived, been laid down, crafted, crewed, and now launched. Soon the USS Miracht will join her sisters in the outer reaches of our frontiers.

I have seen a potentially existential crisis to the Federation come and go, seen species go from strangers to the cusp of Federation membership. I've seen our relation with the Romulans go places no one could ever have foreseen. And now I have seen the rise of a new threat; the Cardassians.

All of this, in Five Years. What will the next five years bring? Do I have that much left in the tank, in this exhausting job? I hope so. I cannot stay in this job forever, but when I go I will hand over a Starfleet that has gone from strength to strength.

Computer, End Log.

Hello Admiral,

Me again. The Explorer Corps office continues to be the distilled essence of pandemonium here. Still, this is when the Explorer Corps Command gets to really shine, so I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. That said, I won't miss this business. Yes, I've found my move, in case you haven't received the notice from Rear Admiral Seruk yet. The head of Shipyard Ops' Industrial Command is retiring and I'm jumping over. From the unknowns of deep space to the meticulously knowns of starship fabrication.

I've always wondered what it looks like inside a warp core before they're sealed up.

I know that we we won't be working as closely anymore, as Shipyard Industrial Command will cross your desk much less often than Explorer Corps does, so let me take a moment to say thank you, it's been a pleasure working with you Admiral. Hopefully my successor gives you a smoother ride!

Now, we have four ships this time. Captains T'Lorel and Eaton are now Commodore T'Lorel and Commodore Eaton. I feel proud that T'Lorel has moved on to...

[ ][TLOREL] Vulcan Sector Command, all ships in this sector gain +1 P
[ ][TLOREL] Director of Operations, Starfleet Explorer Command, +2 pp/year
[ ][TLOREL] Operations Officer, Starfleet Tactical Command, +1 to Offensive Doctrine Research

...and Eaton has moved on to...
[ ][EATON] Director, Starfleet Data Modelling, Ship Design Bureau, +1 to Sensor Research
[ ][EATON] Director, Starfleet Signals Division, Starfleet Intelligence, more accurate ship counts for other powers.
[ ][EATON] Director, Starfleet Battle Review Division, Starfleet Tactical Command, extra research bonuses from battles

I have compiled and attached a list of candidates for the missions. As you know, we have three ships to assign people to. My people will handle the officers and crews, but you have final say on the Captains selected.

I await your reply in the following format at your discretion:

[ ][FYM] Select Captains
-X USS Enterprise: Nash ka'Sharren LOCKED
-[ ] USS Courageous: Write in
-[ ] USS Sarek: Write in
-[ ] USS Miracht: Write in

Hello Admiral,

As you may have heard, Rear Admiral Patricia Chen is transferring out of Starfleet Explorer Command, and into the Shipyard Industrial Command. This leaves a billet open in a senior portfolio which requires your sign-off as Commander of Starfleet.

Starfleet Personnel Command has taken the liberty of shortlisting this down to a set of three candidates, which you will find below.

[ ][COM] Rear Admiral Hikaru Sulu
Human Male, 69
Current Posting: Commander, Starbase 1
A legend of the Federation, Sulu is bold, daring, and skillful. Allows Explorers to count as 1 less Combat each against Maximum Combat Score.

[ ][COM] Commodore Viraan zh'Dohlen
Andorian Female, 64
Current Posting: Chief of Staff, Explorer Corps
A smooth and steady operator behind the scenes. Gain +0.1 Explorer Corps Recruitment

[ ][COM] Commodore Hurgok Sagek
Tellarite Male, 57
Current Posting: Operations Officer, Starfleet Tactical Command
A tough and canny battle commander who can help guide your Captains. +5% to final combat value in fleet battles.

You know, our high Science&Combat Explorers are basically the ST equivalent of High Guard XMCs like the Andromeda.

I don't really have a point here, just thought it was cool.

[X][EATON] Director, Starfleet Data Modelling, Ship Design Bureau, +1 to Sensor Research

Can't pick his first officer over such a hero. Mbeki gets the Challorn, and later the next Explorer Corps Excelsior.

[X][COM] Commodore Viraan zh'Dohlen

I'd like to pick Sulu, but max combat reduction won't do anything for us in the next decade.

Why on earth are people voting for Sulu? His bonus does absolutely nothing for us here.
