Is this statement supported by explicit statements from the game master? But, without a deflector, it will never be able to be fast enough to be anything other than a local patrol ship.
the warp field itself will passively guide interstellar dust around the ship. It's only when incoming velocities and mass exceed the innate deflection force of the warp shell that a deflector becomes necessary.
We know that the NX series from the TV show have deflector dishes. So presumably between Warp 3 and Warp 5 the velocity of incoming mass exceeds the field's ability to natively deflect particles. Which would restrict the Arrowhead to somewhere below the Warp 5 of the next generation of warp engines. Is this statement supported by explicit statements from the game master?
Plenty of reason, for one Half Saucer uses a lot more industry per ship which means we are going to have fewer ships if we go that route and since we are building up starfleet, having enough hulls to actually be out patrolling and in position to intercept is important.Other than just wanting a different aesthetic, there is no reason to vote for Arrowhead.

Half saucer is also stated to be faster and more heavily armed. So it will make a better commerce protection cruiser once we can retrofit them to Warp 5 engines.Plenty of reason, for one Half Saucer uses a lot more industry per ship which means we are going to have fewer ships if we go that route and since we are building up starfleet, having enough hulls to actually be out patrolling and in position to intercept is important.
So, if we went arrowhead, would it eventually be possible for us to develop something besides deflector dishes, or are we still on track for that?It isn't. Lots of species don't use deflectors at all. I'm not sure why, given how vital they seem to be to Starfleet ships, but maybe they just rely on brute force or low-level shielding at all times to just tank micrometeoroids and whatnot. Exterior nacelles and deflectors might just seem like military vulnerabilities to other species.
@Sayle, can we get a ruling on this? Do we have reason to believe the arrowhead proposal won't be forward-compatible with the Warp 5 engine?Which would restrict the Arrowhead to somewhere below the Warp 5 of the next generation of warp engines.

Hm, maybe Starfleet prefers exterior deflector dishes for ease of repair/replacement? Or maybe for easier manufacturing reasons at-scale, where you don't need unique parts for a specific class of ship, but rather a general type of equipment that everything uses.Found an answer about other species use of deflector dishes on Stack Exchange.
"According to the Klingon Bird-of-Prey Owner's Manual, deflection (per se) is essential for interstellar flight, but deflector dishes are merely one set of technology that can be used for that purpose. Some Klingon vessels have large, visible deflectors and others store them entirely in the wings and main body of the vessel"
