On Chika's death: Maybe we avoid that for now. We did tell Akiko that we would talk it out in private with her, right?

In that case,

Since there's no point modifying my vote when Random's got that shit covered.

Btw, Random, were you the guy with the Touhou avvy, or am I misremembering?

"Thanks," you murmur back to her, frowning at the two Sendai girls. Well, they're still... yes, they're still out of your sensing range.

Well.
Suspected it last time, confirmed this time. Akiko has got at least a rough handle on the limits of our senses, and is probably using the other two girls to test the exact limits. Also, in both cases Mami was the one to locate them. Sabrina is becoming too dependent on her grief senses, and is open to someone who can take advantage of that blind spot.
Also: the other two Sendai girls? Minami and the other one? I'm thinking they ran off to get reinforcements.

....Shit, I think they went off to gather more than one group.
Also possible. We still haven't seen the Fukushima girls, and we know that they were inbound already.

we already know what the tax is
We need them to state these things.
Agreed. I'd present the question in a detached manner, and keep it very simple, simply asking for facts.
[] What was the tax rate, and what conditions were attached to it?

I really do wonder why Akiko needs all those grief seeds. The 'tax' on the UG, possibly with all independent magical girls in Sendai, Rin's healing circuit where they charge 5 seeds just for consultation. Doesn't take in to account the cost of the actual healing.

That's a lot of seeds. Unless they have their own debts to pay, they'd almost never have to fight a witch again.

I dislike the idea of telling them not to ask for help yet. They're in a position that doesn't demand that they do so, and Yuko's reaction already indicates that she doesn't believe that Fukui would help them, or at least that there's still friction between them, so asking that group to join in is likely only as a desperation move.

Plus, Tome is much further away than Ishinomaki or Osaki, and either of those groups would still have a several hour trip to get here. Overall, there's just no good reason to push that statement, and it is likely to make them very uncomfortable.

Next issue is Rin. Since we were seated, we haven't seen a single thing from her. What is she doing? How is she reacting? Her behavior is relevant to the Akiko side of the issue, but it's like she disappeared.

[x] Keep an eye on Rin's reactions and behavior as everyone talks.

Well why not just frankenvote everything again?

[x] Keep an eye on Rin's reactions and behavior as everyone talks.
[x] Please don't ask for help yet. Let me try to stop this whole conflict first, and yes that includes Akiko's "tax". It's best if neither group escalates anymore; Akiko's got plenty of favors to call, so she'll match you girl for girl.
[x] This 'tax'... How exactly does it work? Were you offered anything in exchange, and how did she approach you to demand it? I've heard about some of it from others, but I'd like to get your perspective.
[x] Does Hamasaki just want you all out of Sendai? What did it take for Fukui to leave? Was she wore down by Akiko's... Policies, or was there a breaking point, too?
[x] What else has Hamasaki done?
[x] Once that's done, ask if they would be able to talk their minds with Akiko at the table. In addition, would they be willing to discuss things with other members of Hamasaki's group there? Mind that any agreements will hold more weight if it's done in person and not through an intermediate.

Which might just be the point.
I think if Akiko simply wanted to not have to fight witches anymore, she would be a lot more interested in Sabrina's power.

She would like to have grief cleansing at her disposal, but the way she's gone about it tells me that she wants the seeds themselves, for her own purposes that we likely won't support.

I see you're not asking why did they accept the tax nor if they were offered anything in return. Which is valid, since the answers are likely the obvious ones.

I've got a possible theory on Akiko's motivations, but I'd like to ask a couple of questions first before I post it:

-Is karmic backlash a thing here in PMAS? By that I mean if a girl makes a wish for something that is far greater than her Meguca potential's worth, the universe is said to go out of its way to make the girls life a living hell to balance off the hope her wish has generated.
-Did the tsuanmi+earthquake disaster still happen in this version japan?

Thanks.

Out of curiosity, what did we do with the huge amount of grief we had floating around? There's a mention of packing it into a constellation, but did we leave it on the rooftop or something offscreen? Or did we just bring it into the cafe with us and nobody cares about it anymore?

"So, let's begin then!"
"Uhh... aren't you going to do something about that?"
"That what?"
"Oh, I don't know... the huge cloud of balls that scream 'Witch here!' that you managed to cram into the restaurant?"
"Those things? Weeeeell... they take a bit of time to get out again, and Hildy doesn't like it too much when I put them back. And the staff doesn't seem to mind, so what's the harm?"
"You just put one through the front window, and the servers are having an impromptu limbo competition while carrying the refills for our tea! ...And who's Hildy?"
"Hildegarde is my pet witch. See? Empty Seed. Mami, mind getting the window please? They seem to all be really good at limbo though, so no harm done there."
"...free cleansing just remember free cleansing..."

Shadowruns on.

Next, the tactical situation. We're still on a battlfield.

1) Akiko has a measure on our effective sensing distance.
2) The Fukushima group is still unaccounted for, and is expected to be comprised of 6 meguca, bringing the total potential hostile forces to 10.
3) Everyone at the table is untransformed, and thus especially vulnerable if a surprise attack occurs.
4) We've neatly gathered up everyone Akiko is interested in crushing in a tidy little group.
5) We aren't watching Rin for any signs of instructions from Akiko or wariness about anything happening outside our table (eg: down the street, or glances at rooftops or whatever), or the possibility that she might be the 'bomb'.
6) Oriko is currently asleep. Any future sight she might have, she won't notice or make us aware of until she wakes up.

First info reference on sensing:
"Rin needs you right now - we can talk about this later," you snap at Akiko. "I can sense where she is."

"You can sens-" The bluenette blinks rapidly. "Right. Later," she agrees. "Where?"

Shadowruns part 2

Can we detect enchanted objects from just a casual view? Is it possible that Rin's glasses have any special enchantment that she doesn't want Mami to detect? Perhaps a remote viewing enchantment to allow Akiko to see what Rin sees?

She was very uncomfortable with allowing Mami to repair them, interrupting as soon as the topic came up. Even if they're just for show, fixing them should hardly call for refusal.

It's paranoia, but our antimagic+ribbons plan won't work if both Kirika and Mami are out of costume. We can ask K to stand by transformed. I don't think she'd mind being excluded

What we should watch for: if Sakura ever leaves eyesight or if she's joined by anyone other than just Akiko. I'd think Akiko might leave Rin out of any planning, though, so watching her could be unreliable.

New Frankenvote looks good

But there's a legitimate argument for making sure Rin hears those answers.

3) Everyone at the table is untransformed, and thus especially vulnerable if a surprise attack occurs.

So, why are we untransformed, instead of just passing off our unusual outfits as being the new style that the cafe owner is just too old and out of touch to understand?

At some point we need to science up a way to be stealth-transformed.

Are we able to control grief without being transformed? At least enough to be a viable "fuck you" trump card if we get surprise-attacked?

Unfortunately, the Kirika defense isn't likely to be effective, here. First, it takes a few seconds to charge up. Second , its greatest effectiveness is against the meguca herself, and if they're wanting to surprise us they're going to be staying at long range to avoid Sabrina detecting them and being prepared. Third, it doesn't work against mundane attacks, which is likely to be what a long-range snipe attack makes use of.

Uhh, not exactly. Megucas still have full access to most of their powers when untransformed, and the durability of being a lich doesn't go away either. All being untransformed does for a meguca is make it harder to summon their weapon, and by extention locks away any weapon specific abilities such as Homura's timestop. Kirika's antimagic remains unaffected.

Hell, if anything, being untransformed actually makes a meguca less vulnerable, as their soul gems are in ring form and thus harder to hit.

Well, if it's that much of a worry, Sabrina could make a clear shield of grief in the air. Like the windshield, just, well, for armor instead.

OTOH, it's kinda detectable, I think?

Are we sure on that? I've seen various interpretations otherwise, so don't know the degree that we can rely on that.

True.

Since Sakura's powers are fundamentally melee, and thus vulnerable to Sabrina, I doubt she'll be used directly in any attack. At best she might be used to evacuate Rin.

I *almost* want Akiko to try and start some shit at this point, but hopefully she's not so stupid as to do that at this point.
