First things first!

Not getting distracted:

New mission available.
Hunt Misato's Witch?

The "information exchange" between us was opaque,m and horrifically inefficient. It might mean there is some closure to bring, or some saving to do.

As for Onon-chan, I'll try a further vote refinement much later.

Long-term, she needs to be given gentle advice on how to live a healthier life and she shouldn't be treated with a minimum of human respect, not as an idiot that will get herself killed the moment you look away

I mean. She was though? She was going through a grief seed a day and not hunting. We tried the gentle advice route but even after explaining how we had to delay the meeting a few hours because our friends were in literal mortal peril she went out of her way to be as bitchy as possible. If we hadn't stormed her apartment she almost certainly would of died before the next morning.

I'm fairly certain there are toddlers with better self-preservation instincts than Ono.

Sidenote, personal theory for Ono's schtick is that she wished to "Be an ojou" or something which is the reason for her constant grace and speech and is messing with her head("Fighting is barbaric", the munitions grade passive-aggressiveness etc). Also her initial reaction of fear when we arrived in her room via timestop read less like fear of being attacked or whatever and more fear that we'd discover/see something, presumably whatever she's hiding with her magic all the time.

We tried to be polite, she ignored us, she deserves no sympathy and frankly the minimal politeness needed to get her to not self destruct is all I'm willing to give until she shapes up.

She owes us an apology. Not the other way around.

btw we've been several times more sympathetic with other girls who had been far more antagonistic with us, like Kanna Hijiri+Anri Airi, the Fukushima Group (oh hey remember those casualties we just mentioned), Oriko

so being suddenly short on patience with someone like Ono, who's a mild annoyance at worst, is pretty goddamn hypocritical when we've generously extended an olive branch to those who've done so much worse.

Here's the thing, though.

Oriko was at no point *remotely* as petty or as much of a bitch as Ono is/was/has been.

Maleficence and douche-baggery are not the same axis of antagonism.

Another thing? For all that Oriko was fucked up in the head? In her own way, she was trying to help people, not unlike we are. Her methods were wack and her psychology a self-destructive mess, but at the end of the day ISTR her intentions were noble.

Ono, as far as I've been able to tell, is just a narcissist.

I'm always for more trans characters, but I'd be a little leery if the *only* trans character turned out to be a side character who is almost universally disliked.

Anyways! Voting time!

I can't see how this would disprove my point

[X] I won't pretend to be perfect, or all-knowing. I did the best I could at the time, even if all I could think of was being a sledgehammer in a delicate situation--the alternative was you dying.
-[X] I'm sorry that I violated your privacy, but at the time all I could think about was the fear that you'd be dead by morning if things continued as they did.
-[X] I'm also sorry that I blew off our initial appointment--my friend had just been Witch-Kissed and was in mortal danger, and after rescuing her, we didn't give you the consideration that we should have.
--[X] I'm genuinely very glad you're doing alright, and that you're getting along well with Masami and Hiroko--they're great people. I'm hoping we can have a fresh start from here on out, Miss Ono.
I feel like this won't work as either an apology or an explanation. It plays into the same kind of appearance of arrogance, real or not, that Ono's criticizing us for. Assuring her that we had Very Good ReasonsTM for everything we did was part of what got us into this mess in the first place. And on top of that, it feels to me like the opening like to the vote could be restructured as "I know [insert thing here] BUT..." which is never a good sign.

If you want to make an apology, the focus shouldn't be on why we were right, it should be on why we weren't and how we intend to change.

[X] For what it's worth, we have been thinking about our "control freak knows best" tendencies and of how we could be better about that.
[X] On the subject of ruffians... Warn her about the Soujou's and other's like them. And also give warning about having a refugee situation in general.

Contingent the "Trans!Ono" situation there's one other thing, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to go about it.

[] Ask Ono if she's considered whether healing repairs things, or makes them how they should be. In a "Have you considered healing your body to how it should be so you don't need to keep up your magic all the time?" way.

Good grief, we have a lot of petty vanity going on here. I can only hope that Sabrina rises about SV's ultra-delicate ego.

Honestly, things with Ono read about the same as what would have happened if we tossed out leftovers in front of Kyouko, and people started sneering at her because of how "bitchy" she was.

@Redshirt Army
The initial appointment blow-off was because we traumatized Mami by going incommunicado due to grief-trance, followed up by doing so even more with barrier shenanigans, and then Sayaka was witch-kissed and after that we completely blew her off. Your vote will run into issues with that from not addressing the initial issue. Especially considering that we have every sign that Ono's issues stem from self-image, likely regarding not being considered important enough, and then we repeatedly ditched her because other things were more important.

FYI the witch kiss didn't happen until hours after we blew the appointment. We didn't go because Mami was shaken up after Sabrina's first major grief trance while in telepathy, not understanding what it was. And then it happened again, except much much worse after Sabrina made the witch barrier.

Her name is gender ambiguous.
Isn't Madoka's too?

Do not attempt to clock the girl who might have sold her soul to keep that from happening.

Ono being trans is none of Sabrina's business, tbqh, even if it is why she's burning magic all the time. Unsolicited advice is pretty much never received well, and Ono certainly isn't going to appreciate anything Sabrina has to say on the matter. *I* certainly wouldn't appreciate it if a cis person (and one I already didn't like to boot!) poked their nose into my business to propose alternatives to my current form of gender affirmation. Ono's constant magic upkeep is no longer making her a danger to herself, and if after having it beat into her by the Animators that she can't burn MP like that wasn't enough to get her to stop and seek out alternatives, then it must be doing exactly what she wants it to do.

tl;dr oh gods we have so many negative social modifiers in play here already, PLEASE DON'T TRY TO OPEN UP UNNECESSARY AND EXTREMELY DELICATE SUBJECTS WITH THE GIRL WHO ALREADY KINDA HATES US

edit: @Torgamous you said it faster and far better than I did, thank you.

Let's also not forget that Sabrina speaks with flawless enunciation (of the sort that you'd normally only find in someone whose family could afford speech tutors), walks around with the body language and posture of someone who has never been afraid of getting hurt or being lost or ever being not in complete control of what happens to her, and 'always knows better about what's important'.

Meanwhile, everything we know about Ono suggests that she has serious self-worth and self-image issues, is likely subject to capricious mistreatment from her alcoholic mother, while being looked down on at school for her poor performance, whose wish was to have all the poise and grace that Sabrina's just got automatically.

Now take those two, break into the girl's only sanctuary to lecture sanctimoniously at her because you know better, all while the Incubator has been feeding her stories carefully calculated to add more distance.

How the fuck do you think that would go?

Taken into advisement then.

Okay so maybe we can ask if we really need to do this now? Maybe appeal to her sense of decorum, give her time gather her thoughts? Something like this but not made of 90% bland cardboard:

[] Apologize for the difficult training she had experienced, and the callous treatment we've given her
[] Propose a longer and more personal discussion under a privacy field after the meeting with the Animators. Offer to give her a ride home after we drop off Noriko and Akemi to their apartment.

I think a one-on-one talk with Ono might be helpful, with emphasis on the one-on-one bit. IIRC, most of our interactions with her so far were with a numerical advantage against her.

Also, I get the feeling that how Sabrina would treat Ono would shape how she would deal with the more mundane (or some would say 'petty') meguca issues. Would she blow them off with the excuse that their problems aren't life threatening enough, or would she try to give them just 5 minutes to hear them out?

Hum, tone aside, she did recognize that we helped her, more or less.
I see this as a glaring success.

Tentative vote cannibalizing bits of others

--[X] Ask her. How does she think we could have done it better? How would have she preferred we approached her in hindsight, now that she has learned more about her situation?
-[X] If she doesn't want to answer now or wants to have a discussion one-on-one propose a privacy field for later.

I have the feeling we should speak up in defense of the Animators but I'm not quite sure how to put it to words.

While those explain her actions, they do not excuse them. If she wants to tell us what her deal is (and preferably also say sorry for being a suicidal moron) then I'd be willing to talk, but she rolls up, acting like we didn't save her life, and constantly being rude as hell for no other reason than petty dislike of us.

I'm sorry Godwinson, but I'm going to sit this vote out, because I have no sympathy whatsoever for her.
