Everyone here is aware that Sabrina values Mami a shitton. The thread is deeply attached to her, as is Sabrina as a character. We choose to spend time with her.
In the end, all of Mami's issues circle around her loneliness and her
fear of loneliness. Perceived inadequacies have grown, and continue to grow and froth amongst them: that she has never done enough for us, that she's "broken," that sort of thing.
"I am," Mami says. "I'm alright, Sabrina. I'm just- preparing a surprise for you. I can't tell you more than that!"
"Oh," you say. "You don't- you don't have to, Mami. Not at the cost of your lessons."
"I want to," Mami says. "And, um... I'm still in class. Just working on something on the side."
"School is important, Mami," you say as you turn the corner, ducking under the shade of a building. "Being a magical girl isn't going to be everything, you know?"
"I won't let my grades slip. I promise," Mami says. "I... let me do this for you, Sabrina? Please?"
You can't say no to that.
"OK," you say. "Thank you, Mami."
"It... it's the least I could do," Mami says softly. "You've done so much for me, Sabrina."
"And you've done so much for me," you say. "We really should just call it even."
"Nuh-uh," Mami says.
"Sabrina?" Mami asks.
"Just thinking," you say, and pull her into a hug. "I'm lucky to know you."
"I'm luckier to know you," Mami mumbles into your shoulder, her arms warm and tight around your waist.
"I know you think so," you say, pulling back and smiling at her. "I disagree. So let's just leave it at that, and agree we're both really lucky to have each other?"
"I... Alright." She takes a breath, and smiles at you. A touch wan, but warm and adoring. "Shall we start preparing for our guests?"
At the end of the day, much of the understanding in this relationship is one-sided. Sabrina is completely aware of virtually all of Mami's major issues, hopes, dreams, etc etc. She knows why Mami likes her, she knows
what Mami likes about her, etcetera.
But on Mami's end?
Sabrina knew about her. Okay.
Backstory: Sabrina showed up in an alley with no memory.
General desires: improve the world.
Why she likes me: ??? apparently she does though... she... said I make every day brighter?
Issues: ??? gets frustrated with villains... wants to save people? Hard on herself?
What she enjoys: cooking, apparently. Basically everything we've done together...?
Meanwhile, behind the scenes we're juggling =all of the things=. We have
yuge issues, they're just easily survivable ones. The list goes on.
The only reasons she's even aware that we like her at all are our reactions to & surrounding the date and
our having told her we enjoy being around her during the damn metabomb. But... we've never said a word about why.
And largely as a result of that, and partially just because we've not done anything that could reasonably be expected to disabuse her of the notion, she honestly believes we've done far more for her than she has for us -- and isn't she
right, from her perspective? We filled a void in her heart and saved her from an inevitable and painful death. She understands that. All she did that she can see is giving us shelter. And so...
"I am," Mami says. "I'm alright, Sabrina. I'm just- preparing a surprise for you. I can't tell you more than that!"
"Oh," you say. "You don't- you don't have to, Mami. Not at the cost of your lessons."

So I went and thought about how to address this. Explaining
why we like her is a concept that's floated around my archives since the metabomb. But we needed
more if we wanted to get anywhere
meaningful. Mami believes, among other things, that we've done more for her than she has for us. She fears, even if she's perhaps starting to hope it's irrational, that we'll leave her. And she simply
does not understand the level of attachment Sabrina has to her -- she's seen signs of it, and heard partial declarations of it, but for the life of her she can't see
why it would be that way: and so she fears, and it tears her apart. All of that has to be addressed. Furthermore, we need to give her reason to understand why we feel she's done as much for us as we have for her. Because
fuck letting her develop an inferiority complex alongside her abandonment trauma -- that'd screw her up even more.
So, a few months back, right before Rionna showed up, in response to that Firnpost I've been quoting here, I hit on this concept:
What's Mami done for us? How has Mami as a character changed the thread?
And it was a fucking
gold mine.
I looked at how Sabrina has developed as a character. I looked at our responses as a thread to Mami and other topics over time. And the basic line that I settled on was this:
When this quest started, it was about a mission.
It's come to be as much about our friends.
Why?
Because of who they are, what they do, and how those things influence us.
The OP even says it. "Tabula Rasa." But are we that now? No, and we haven't been in a long time. Sabrina has developed attachments, personality... and most of all,
happiness. Honestly one could say she's developed a
life, where once there was only a mission.
And I'll tell you now: those developments aren't the result of a single-minded mission to improve the lives of meguca planetwide.
When this thread started out, it wasn't expecting Sabrina to end up dating a character. Hell, I don't think it was expecting to enjoy reading about Sabrina's interactions with
anyone nearly as much as we do. But it has happened anyway, and it has happened not because we as a thread -- or as a character -- set out to achieve it, not because we were aware it was possible, and definitely not because we were aware it was something we wanted before we stumbled into it. I mean, otherwise we would have gone looking for it.
No. We have these things because the characters we all so deeply enjoy reading exposed us to the fact that these were things we could have as part of this story: fluff, jokes, slice-of-life scenes... I don't think anybody ever predicted that we'd have this based on the OP. I'm not from the crowd that came from witch quest or Sayaka quest, so maybe I'm wrong about that... But I know it's true for me, and I doubt anyone predicted the full extent.
And no character has had anywhere near the impact on us in this manner as has Mami.
Fact of the matter is, we've long since stopped spending time with her just for her sake. At this point, it's as much because we honestly enjoy having her in the story with Sabrina.
These are the things which need to be explained to Mami: at length, in detail, and leaving as little room for doubt as possible. That Sabrina is drastically happier than she would be if not for Mami (and behind the scenes, we enjoy this story vastly more than we might otherwise). That that is something
incredible which she has done for us. That we do not
want to leave her, because she is someone
we do not want to lose.
... And most of all, that even if at some point we might have been okay with repairing her life and then leaving her,
we no longer want that. More than that, in fact:
we fear losing her.
That regarding what she's done for us, it is
because of her that we have any of this. Because we wouldn't have thought to seek it out! We had no idea that it was something
we wanted until she showed us that we did.
These are all truths, derived as much from the thread as from Sabrina herself. I expect that there is much to be gained in adequately expressing them, intertwined. And so I've written.
We were okay with being
alone, once. Who here now shall say that Sabrina, or the thread, would find that ending acceptable? And who here shall say amongst us that this change has not been for the better?
The vote (should be in word limit):
[X] Go home, cuddle, make sure Mami has her homework covered if she has any.
[X] Explain to Mami, at length:
-[X] What you feel she's done for you.
-[X] That in the process of doing it for you, you've been brought to understand that you
enjoy being with her.
-[X] That at the start of all of this, you might have been okay with just making sure she got a happy ending, but that you have come to actively want to be around her: not just for her sake, but for your own happiness.
--[X] That this is what she has done for you: she showed you what it was to have a life, to have happiness of your own. You'd thought it was okay if you ended up alone in the end... You don't
want to be alone.
--[X] Do it without making her freak out, or, worse, think that we're going to leave her. No repeats of the metabomb fiasco.
The blueprint (how it could be done):
[] Hug Mami.
[] The pendant, and the things she said earlier, about what you've done for her... it got you thinking.
[] You understand what you've done for her, and the importance of it -- well, she said it. "I'm not alone anymore." You filled a void in her heart, right?
[] It's an awful lot, you know that... And yet, you
do feel that you're "even", as far as these things go, you've just been having trouble expressing exactly
why. You've leaned on easy things, like thanking her for taking you in, and simply saying that she's done a lot for you, but... None of it has really sufficed to convey what you want to convey. You wanted her to understand what she's done for you, and the
magnitude of it, what she's done for you that you honestly believe it equivalent to what you've done for her. But you could never find the words, until today.
[] You... said something once to her? That... you hadn't known the two of you could be friends?
-[] See, it wasn't really accurate, when you said that, because you'd always known that
she could have friends.
--[] But... You? You were just here to fix things. Do the right stuff, get everyone happy endings, put a stop to all the horribleness. Improve the lives of everyone around you.
---[] You'd never thought that
you could have a life, too.
----[] It started with small things. Just... having someone around who didn't mind your silliness. The portal theme. Mechazilla. But... it grew. You realized that
you could have her as a friend... and you realized that you
wanted to have her as a friend. To know her better, to be around her, not because it was part of fixing things but because
you wanted it. Because
you enjoyed it. Because
she makes you happy, and you've found that you
want that. If she hadn't beaten you to the punch, you would have asked her out sooner or later, because
you have a life now, and you want her in it.
-----[] And... it's because of
her, that you found any of this. You... there's been an
image burned into your head, since the very start -- of you, alone, wandering the universe in the distant future, and being asked whether you didn't want to stop. Whether you didn't want to settle in a place with others you were friends with. And you... you said no, in that image. And back then... you thought it was something of a
success story, if a little sad. At the time, it had meant to you that you'd fixed things -- after all,
you being alone forever was mostly fine, right?
------[] Hands on her shoulders, look her right in her eyes. Earnest, honest, soft:
That is what she has done for you. Perhaps it's been less visible than what you've done for her, but it has been
no less life-changing: your happiness
matters.
You matter. You understand why she still has some worries about you leaving -- it'd be hard not to, after what she's been through -- but the fact is that someone would have to force you to do it, so long as she'll have you. Because
you have a life now, and you want
her in it.
-------[] Quietly: you don't
want to be alone.
[] Cleanse everything ever just in case.
Now, I wanna make some stuff clear. I've tried, above, to lay out some of the logic behind this, but what was written first was the blueprint, and it's there where the most meaning is. When I visualize social it is inevitably in the form of statements. I've been historically shy, introverted, etc: this is something I do in real life, too. Thus, the blueprint is the purest conceptualization of the vote, designed by running the concept of "get Mami to understand what she's done for us and that we *want* to have her with us" against my mental model of her, same as I use in MQ. If you're looking for meaning in this post, go there first. Everything else is me trying to explain why that is the way it is, or trying to cram a summary down into a word limit.
And, lastly, to everyone suggesting an early night of doing little... No. Do this instead. I promise you'll enjoy it more.
