Highway 17 pt. 17
You nod, decisions made - more than one. The sun's rising, and it's definitely well into wakefulness time, so that means time to call in on people. But first...

You give Mami a smile, warm and pleased. "You know what? I think your idea works the best, for letting our friends know about the danger Anri poses," you say, and tighten your hug around her a little. "You're the best, Mami. I have no idea what I'd have done without you."

You exhale slowly, thoughts reaching out. You can lean on your inexplicable multitasking - you could definitely make a joke here about not actually thinking with your brain, because you're fairly certain a human brain doesn't handle multitasking quite like this.

Clock, knight, and traveller. Homura, Sayaka, and Nadia - and Mami, of course. "Hello, girls?"

And then to Oriko, because of course Mami's got the right idea. "Oriko, you got a moment?" you say. "I need a favour."

"Ah, good morning, Sabrina!" Nadia says cheerfully, accented tones lilting through telepathy. "We are on schedule. Due to arrive at 10."

"Yeah, uh, about that," you say awkwardly. "Mami and I most likely won't be there."

Oriko replies to you, just then. There's a touch of interest shading her voice. "Oh?"

"Mmmhmm~" you hum a note of that odd little poem you have running through your mind. "From you, help I require - of knowledge I acquired, a clue from you would surely stir much ado."

"Ah? Something has come up?" Nadia responds to you.

"To you, an explanation is quite overdue," you continue the cadence to Nadia. "It's under control, we're on a roll - we're handling trolls."

"Your meter and rhyme leave much to be desired," Oriko sniffs. "Nevertheless. What do you need me to say?"

"Anri has dangerous knowledge," you say, dropping the rhyme. "I need you to tell the Pleiades not to listen to her, and preferably let me handle her when we find her. It'll have more weight coming from you, I hope."

"Easily done," Oriko says, and smoothly switches channels to include the Saints. "Miss Kazusa, Pleiades Saints, there is something you all need to know."

"I see?" Nadia says, finally. You can hear the befuddlement in her voice - which reminds you, she isn't, after all, a native speaker.

"Sorry about that," you say, a touch sheepishly. "Just... felt like rhyming, for some reason. Nadia, Mami's friends in Asunaro needed our help in a hurry - their lab was broken into, one of theirs was attacked, and among other things, one of my Clear Seeds was stolen along with an invention of theirs. We're hunting down the perpetrators right now, but we probably won't be back before ten today. Homura, Sayaka, will you be alright to handle that, and Nadia, can you apologise on our behalf?"

"'course!" Sayaka says brightly. "Right, transf- Homura?"

"Yes. It won't be a problem," Homura says.

"Aw, hell, Homura, you can't be like that when meeting new people," Sayaka says. "Don't worry, Sabrina, Mami, we've got this."

"I will tell them," Nadia says. "It is not an issue." She hesitates for a second. "It is good, that you hunt them down. This is not something you should leave, fimti? People can not be allowed to steal your Clear Seeds."

"Yeah, I know," you admit with a sigh, listening with a sliver of your attention to Oriko explaining about Anri's dangerous information. "'s part of why I'm here and not in Mitakihara, the other part being that I've got to help my friends, y'know?"

"Mm," Nadia agrees. "I will make apologies for you. We will see you later today?"

"That's the plan!" you agree cheerfully. "Later, Nadia. Thanks. And thank you, Homura, Sayaka." You glance over in the direction Sayaka's in, but you've spread out far enough that you can't see her anymore.

Excellent. That's handled, then. You say your goodbyes for now, and then link up to Mami and Kazumi. "Kazumi, Mami and I are going to try something."

"Oh? Oh, the ribbons? Yeah, go for it!" Kazumi says.

Mami blushes as you take her hand. At the same time, you glance back at Hijiri. "Hey Hijiri, just a heads up, Mami and I are gonna try something. Also, I'm gonna shuffle you up so you can actually see properly, alright?"

Her chair's already moving, sliding smoothly across the floor of your flying fortress. You shift it forward and to your left, so she has an actual view through the window, Hijiri clinging to the armrests the entire time and fidgeting uncomfortably.

Heh. Can't go for a literal backstab if she isn't at your back.

At the same time, Mami shifts to dangle her hand over the edge of the fortress. She loops ribbon through your intertwined fingers, smiling at you and squeezing gently.

"Alright," you say, exhaling slowly and pulling the fortress to a halt. Don't want to slam into a building while distracted by transmuting your sensory device out of Grief, after all. You hold your hand out, Grief flowing out of seemingly thin air. "Keep watch for me, Mami?"

"Of course," Mami says, smiling soft and warm at you.

You exhale, and focus.

To find the vengeful wraith/with true love's embrace/and follow the flower's élan, poise, and grace.

Your eyes flicker open with a jolt. True love?

...

You haven't known Mami for long enough to say that. Maybe, maybe in the future. Maybe not even that far in the future. Certainly you feel a great deal of respect and affection and frankly adoration for Mami, but true love is a high bar to meet.

"Sabrina?" Mami asks, honey eyes warm and concerned as she peers at you.

"I'm alright," you say, shaking your head and smiling at her. "And I'm done."

You lift the little pair of binoculars sheepishly. They're silver, covered with elaborate traceries of filigree and black inlays.

Well, you definitely had someone on your mind when you created these. But these should work. You don't actually have to look through them - they're just... a representation of purpose, wrought in Grief and resonant with Witch song.

Mami squeezes your hand gently again. "I'm ready, Sabrina."

You nod, and purse your lips. "One moment," you murmur to her, and turn to Hijiri instead.

"So Hijiri," you say, raising your eyebrow at the blonde. You can't help noticing that seated, her twintails are long enough to brush the floor, which is... honestly impressive. "I realise that we've just... kind of left you there. Whatcha thinking?"

Hijiri blinks at you. "What?"

"Whatcha thinking?" you repeat patiently, grinning at her. "I mean, duh, this is kind of a graceless way to incite conversation. But I shouldn't be ignoring you, so I apologise for that."

"I'm thinking you're weird as hell," she says flatly. "What even are you doing?"

"I've got, uh, a very eclectic set of powers," you say, waving the binoculars at her again. "In this case, I'll be working with Mami to extend my range and search for Anri. This'll take a bit longer to set up, so I'm sorry about that. Though if you don't mind my making a suggestion...?"

"Go on then," she says, scowling. "Not like you can make things worse."

"Look... I'm here to help. I'm here to help everyone, and that includes you. I don't know what you want, but... at the end of all this, I'll try to find a way to make everyone happy," you say. "So, um. Yeah. Think about it?"

"What I want is simple, alright? I wanna go home. Back to my normal life, without her there," she snorts.

"Right," you say, wincing. "I'll... keep that in mind. But, um."

Hijiri sneers at you. "Yeah, didn't think so." She folds her arms and scowls.

"Hijiri," you say. You're delaying the actual searching for Anri, but it'll take a bit of focus, and you want to actually try and reach out to Hijiri right now. She'll be able to tell you're not focusing fully on her. "Look. The moment you made your Wish, your life changed. It's the nature of a Wish, you know? I don't think you can go back to your old life... but think about a way you can find happiness?"

Her scowl deepens, and she looks away.

You sigh, and turn your attention back to Mami, who's giving you a warm, fond smile. You squeeze her hand gently.

"Ready?" you murmur, and at her nod, you focus.

This isn't the same as your Grief transmutation. That is your will forcing a fragment of reality into something different, something fundamental and instinctual. This... this is you simply opening up, your magic melding with Mami's and coursing along the ribbons she laid. You can feel your awareness flooding along the network she created, a jellyfish's umbrella of trailing tendrils spreading across entire blocks.

Mami sucks in a breath, snuggling closer into your side.

"All good?" you murmur to Mami, taking in the entire area with your mind.

"Yes," she says, giving you a brilliant smile. "Definitely."

"Then let's get to it," you say, and kick your fortress forward. You drift forward, a giant doom jellyfish trailing a net of invisible ribbons dangling nearly to the ground beneath you. It's not quite the same sensory awareness, but you can feel the lack of your selected target - Anri.

And you can pick up speed now that you don't have to dip low to scan. You zip past buildings and parks, checking in quickly with Kazumi, but you've got enough speed to catch up with the dragnet of a search she's coordinating across the city.

"Sabrina?" Mami murmurs from her position, firmly tucked into your side. Her eyes are half closed, a contented smile on her lips.

"Yeah?" you say, smoothing her hair with your free hand.

"I think I could spread the ribbons across a much bigger zone," she says. "But we've got to be still. And I'd be approaching my limit, I think."

"Ah," you say, pursing your lips thoughtfully.

"So what do you suggest I do?" Hijiri snaps, out of the blue.

Hmm, regarding Hijiri... Making it clear Niko has no intention to interfere in her life seems a little complicated to do. Still, having Niko stay over for a little to see if Hijiri's issues stop there is an option. However, Hijiri would have to get over Niko creating and ditching her regardless. Sabrina needs to do something that really resonates with her. So admittedly, Sabrina could have Hijiri hit her with some anti-magic to provide proof she's an artificial being too. Very least, Sabrina could explain she doesn't remember who she was or how she initially had no one. Showing off she's the only one who can create Clear Seeds definitely provides Hijiri inventive to keep her alive and happy.

Well, I had thought we'd do this whole ribbon thing standing still to start with, so... I know my choice. :p

(I had though we could do this from home base, but apparently now that would be beyond Mami's grid range).

Hijiri's actually asking for advice, I believe. This is good.

[] Mami.
-[] Feel happy at her. Agree with he suggestion.

;)

[] Hijiri.
-[] Earlier she said she wanted to go away. Now she said she wants to go home. Has she thought about taking a trip? Not leaving permanently, but having some time for herself, away from her family, away from Niko?
-[] Offer help with transport, and with a Clear Seed so she doesn't have to fight for her life in order to live.
-[not now] Not gonna lie. Both her, Niko, and their family need to come to terms with this situation.

So... what do we need to do with Hijiri?

If we could disabuse her from the idea that the magical girl life is an awesome thing, that Niko went to have fun adventures while leaving Hijiri to take her place at her boring old family life, that would be neat.

But more important, we need to take into account Hijiri's going through a phase where she doesn't know who herself is, who her family is; it's not a magical problem, but a teenager problem. The Wish simply compounds it, makes it a lot more... problematic.

Canonically, Hijiri died happily after being beaten down and convinced/therapized/Kazumi'd that her family did love her, that even if she started out as a fake, the connections she made, the time she spent with other people did matter; that she was her own person and that she had her own worth.

Unfortunately, we don't have a Kazumi Subaru here, and Sabrina hasn't had to deal with such identity crises. So no quick and easy way about this.

She hesitates for a second. "It is good, that you hunt them down. This is not something you should leave, fimti? People can not be allowed to steal your Clear Seeds."

Yep. This is about reputation, about the promises we gave to the groups that accepted our assistance, and about the conditions that we imposed on groups like Sendai. If we just leave this, it reflects badly on us.

"What I want is simple, alright? I wanna go home. Back to my normal life, without her there," she snorts.

She, uh, had that. Like... we could give her a clear seed and take her back home to live about as normally as magical girls can, and while the Pleiades would almost certainly be checking in on her periodically after that stunt she pulled, we could probably negotiate with them so it isn't creepy vicarious spying. She and Niko can come to some sort of understanding. Is that actually what she wants?

"I think I could spread the ribbons across a much bigger zone," she says. "But we've got to be still. And I'd be approaching my limit, I think."

Aw yiss. Time for us and Mami to cover an entire city with our magic. But first...

"So what do you suggest I do?" Hijiri snaps, out of the blue.

...we need to address our tag-along.

[ ] Hijiri
-[ ] Goal: Get her thinking of concrete, realistic ways she can move forward. Potentially:
--[ ] She can stay with her family here, with a Clear Seed. She won't need to hunt, at least.
--[ ] She can go to Mitakihara, or some other city, and you'll help arrange school transfers and such.
--[ ] Either way she'll probably be under some degree of scrutiny until she re-earns trust, but you can make sure it isn't creepy vicarious spying.
-[ ] Goal: Keep her occupied with thinking about this, so she doesn't do something stupid while you find Airi. Potentially:
--[ ] Niko certainly seemed to have some kind of realization earlier, talking to her. What was that about?
--[ ] Is staying here really what she wants? If she wants to forge a totally different life, that's also doable. Citizenship documents are easy.

[] Mami.
-[] Agree with the suggestion. Initialize White Ribbon Search Protocols!
-[] This entire city is now your domain! MWAHAHAHAHA! Share giddy happy thoughts with Mami.

[] Answer Hijiri. More like something you'd hope to see happen before you leave here. It's your hope that Hijiri and Niko can come to some kind of understanding with each other.
[] You don't believe they've reached the point where things are irreparable between these two 'sisters?'
[] They need to talk. Really talk and things obviously can't be the same anymore.
[] Ask Hijiri if the Pleiades saw and treated you as a peer, maybe even someday a friend rather then someone to watch over, would she feel differently?
[] At the end of the day, the Pleides can't force you to stay here if you don't want to be here. If there's no hope of Hijiri and Niko making amends then you'll support Hijiri's wish to leave. You'll even help her with the move if she'll let you.

This story has really slowed down into a minute-by-minute slog in a way that I'm not sure is great.

Really, who cares about the details of exactly how Sabrina and Mami execute this search? Is that really interesting? Is it important? Is this like a success or failure point where if they do the smaller zone moving search versus a wide area stationary search then the story will be radically different ten updates from now? If not, why the obsession with minutia?

We all know that unless the players completely screw up they're going to find Airi and have a confrontation, because it would be lame if they don't. So why the update after update obsessed with the exact details of everything that's going on every minute, the exact words used. exactly how they're hunting... is this really what people are in the quest for? Is it going to make good reading when someone is coming back to try and archive binge it all at once?

EDIT: I know I'm going to get a lot of blow-back from this, but it just feels to me like there could be more of an effort to separate important story points from things that don't really matter all that much and can be elided over.

The pacing issue is well known. Things are slow because the challenge is largely in the social aspect of this rather then mechanical. Social is complicated and thus slow. If you've noticed, this isn't just about Airi but also about Hijiri, the Pleiades and now Nadia's group.

[] Hijiri.
-[] Honestly, we can't tell what's the best course of action. We understand her conflict to some extent, but she's the one going through this.
-[] We believe Niko cares about her; her family too. They'll all need to sit down and talk at some point.
-[] For now? Her actions conflict with each other. She's said she wants to leave, and now that she wants to stay.
-[] She could do both? Why not go on a trip, far away from all... this? She could stay a few days at Mitakihara. Or, we know an information broker; she can help her find a nice vacation spot.

I really think Hijiri would benefit from having some time away from everything. Enough time for her to want to come back.

Also, she probably would benefit from making a blog, or some social media account, and posting her thoughts. Like diary, but teenagers these days...

*Feels old* :p

Honestly, can I put that as a point in favor of not going whole hog on the search? The sooner we find Anri the sooner we switch from being able to talk calmly to Hijiri to the confrontation with Anri. If that happens before we get to talk, well, that opportunity is gone and whatever situation exists after that confrontation will almost certainly be radically different.

At the risk of the Pleiades finding her first or her deciding she no longer has ****'s to give and causing an incident in a public area? Airi is too dangerous.

Canonically, Hijiri died happily

Ah. So explosions represent happiness in Asunaro.
Good to know.

Sorry about that, it's just me feeling envious over others' people better understanding of the whole mess in Kazumi Magica.

The magical power of delegating. We really should do this more often, guys. ( No, it's not about giving Firn more work and less to us. It's about that, however haxx Sabrina is, there are still quite a lot of things she isn't good at. Social-fu being one of them. I think she just has a natural -10 roll on account of being so OP. So, while there are things we can do better ourselves, or we have to do ourselves, other things really call for someone not with a whole leg firmly lodged down their intestinal tract. )

Just had an epiphany. Sorry, if everyone has realized this already, I've only recently caught up.

So, there's a problem to address: Sayaka hasn't been warned about Anri's infohazard. We didn't tell her, and Oriko didn't tell her.

---------------

I like the idea of suggesting a trip to Hijiri. Being out of her sister's shadow for a little while would do her well.

Additionally, I think there might be a track in asking her if there's anything she ever wanted to do, before this happened. We do know a couple things there from PMKM and Niko. Tourism comes to mind as Niko once expressed a wish to see the grand canyon with her friends. Alternatively, if Niko's love of research is shared, she could study magic or enchantment with someone (or many someones) outside the city for a while. (Visual aids as to just what proper application can do might help here. We do have a gold bar and the ability to press form it.)

Last thing that comes to mind is her loneliness. Not sure how that would fit in, but I feel it matters enough to her that it could make a good point for the argument if it could be made to fit.

You blink.

Hijiri's... actually asking for advice? Maybe? This could be a good thing.

You take a moment to enjoy Mami's warmth; you spend a few seconds simply admiring her, her eyes half closed, as if dreaming awake, her lips curved into a happy smile...

You forcefully tear your gaze away before too long, to look at Hijiri, who's frowning impatiently.

You lick your lips, gathering your thoughts for a moment.

"I don't think I can tell you what to do," you tell the blonde not latched onto your side, "nobody can, really. Do you even really know what you want?" you ask rethorically, to which Hijiri simply huffs, looking away.

You try to smile at her. Not that smiling is difficult, you think, taking comfort on the content girl you're cuddling.

"Hijiri," you call her attention back to you, "I can't fully understand what you're going through-"

She interrupts, mumbling something like "of course you can't", mostly to herself.

"But I think I understand enough," you assert, drawing a sharp look from the girl. You smile. "You aren't sure of who you are, right? Or who your family is... everyone feels like strangers-"

"Sabrina's an artificial human, too," says Mami dreamily and suddenly.

You trail off, your mouth still moving, but not making any sound. Instead, your eyes drift from Hijiri -who's slightly gaping- down to Mami, who's shily looking up at you, hugging you a little tighter than just a second ago.

"Mami?" you ask softly, unable to clamp down on the shiver that goes down your spine. You regret it immediately, as the blonde's lips tremble, but before you can do anything, Mami smiles.

You can't help but to smile back, that simple act making you feel better... And Mami can feel that, you know. You know.

"It's true, isn't it?" she asks softly, her hand meeting yours, fingers intertwining together.

"It's... likely," you half shrug, to which Mami hums. "Is it..." you lick your lips, "is it important? To you?" you clarify.

The blonde shifts her head on your shoulder, and you brush away on of her curls with your free hand as she looks straight into your eyes.

"You'll stay with me," she states.

You nod without thinking. "Yes."

Mami's next smile takes away your breath. You feel warm and content, and a tingling like butterflies in your stomach at the same time, and you feel just comforted, and safe, and like a current of fear and insecurity were just drowned and washed away by a much, much larger feeling of... happiness, of connecting...

Your thoughts jolt as you feel a trickle of magic flowing down Mami's hand, where it holds onto your own... where they lightly touch onto the floor of your ship. Your ship made out of Grief.

Mami's smile turns just a touch sly, and you can feel her amusement, her joy, and the subtle fear beneath it.

You chuckle, drawing her closer, laying your lips on her forehead for a few seconds...

A poke at your back startles you and Mami.

You feel both your and her irritation then, so you feel both ofyou can be excused when your gazes snap at Hijiri, who flinches back with an "eep!".

Mirth flows through you then, in contrast to the momentary annoyance, and you half-chuckle, half... shake your head, looking back down at Mami.

You sigh, the two of you together, smiling at each other for a moment, before the flow of magic stops. From both sides; it's not like you were searching really hard.

"So- so you're..." Hijiri stammers, and you both look back at her. "You're really an artificial human?" she asks with wide eyes.

"Well..." you drawl as you shift, Mami and you turning around so you can talk face to face with your captive. "Yes," you answer, "I think so, at least. It's my best guess."

Hijiri blinks, nonplussed. "Guess?"

"It's complicated," you half explain, your non-Mami-hugging hand coming up to play with one of your bangs of hair. Receiving only an inquisitive stare, you try to explain briefly. "I woke up a couple of weeks ago in an alleway, injured. I had to make a Wish so I could stay alive. I also knew about a few people who could... use some help," you press closer to Mami then, and feel her sigh.

Looking back at Hijiri, who's frowning oh so slightly, you half shrug. "I don't have a past, Hijiri," you say. "All I have is the time I've spent with Mami," you let go of your bang to hold the blonde's hand once more, "and with the rest of my friends. I have two weeks' worth of experiences, and the goals I set for myself," you smile. "And I know I'll have a lot more in the future. It's enough, for me."

For a moment, you see something flash through Hijiri's yellow eyes... before she snorts and looks away, arms crossed.

"Whatever..." she drawls, "I didn't ask for your life story."

But she kind of did? you blink.

Hijiri frowns, turning further away. "Spare me the sappiness. Weren't you searching for someone?"

You can see her trying to look at you from the corner of her eye, her cheeks flushing slightly red.

Mami buries her head on your shoulder, and you can feel her shaking slightly with laughter.

You let out a breath, shaking your head, unable to stop your lips from curling up, sharing in on Mami's amusement.

"You're right," you say, turning around to face the front of your ship once more, Mami following your movement. "Come on, we've got a girl to find and hopefully help out," you grab onto Mami's ribbons once more.

You can hear Hijiri mutter "or maybe just beat her up..."

"If necessary," says Mami, her voice resonating strongly across the small confines of the flying ship.

You feel Hijiri gulp at that -thanks to your Grief. She nods and sits straighter, even if neither of you can -theoretically- see her.

"Ready, Mami?" you whisper to her ear, tugging onto her mass of ribbons.

You feel her nod into your shoulder, more than you see it.

Thus, you let your magic flow once more; your senses expanding through the grid of ribbons far, far away... and the blonde girl sighing contentedly, cuddling very, very close.

[x] Hijiri:
-[x] Get her thinking of specific ways she can move forward.
--[x] She can stay with her family here, with a Clear Seed. She won't need to hunt.
--[x] She can move away, and you'll help travel, arrange school transfers, etc. Maybe take a vacation somewhere first, see how she feels?

-[x] Agree. Initialize White Ribbon Search Protocols!

[x] Sayaka:
-[x] Airi knows about soul gems. The Pleiades might not, hence Oriko's infohazard warning.

150 words.

I know my take on warning Sayaka is gonna be controversial, so let me justify it. Sayaka, unlike Mami, currently has a negative experience with us hiding things "for her own good". If we give her a generic "she knows bad shit" warning, she'll be inclined to disagree with us.

On the other hand, Airi has no knowledge of Sayaka, is super unlikely to talk to her at all, and if we bring up the lichbomb, Sayaka will happily back us up.

I'm going to x in my vote. I don't think pushing Hijiri to come to Mitakihara is the best idea right now.

[x] Mami's suggestion
-[x] Set down and try the bigger zone

Heh. Can't go for a literal backstab if she isn't at your back.

Something occurs to me with this, the Mobile Oppression Fortress is really good at oppressing even its own passengers!! :V ! *mad laughter ensues*

At least, that might be what Hijiri just realized with that reaction. With us showing off our fine control over the material of the MoF, if she tries anything funny right now...it'd be a moments thought to show her what a real literal backstab is like, right? (Or are the seats some sort of crappy school-desk thing with pointless gaps?)

Anyways, that would seem to make Hijiri largely a non-threat while we search unless we get too distracted to even notice her actions. And for Anri, I'm not super familiar with her powerset but unless she has anti-magic or something.... we've battle-tested this Fortress in open-warfare style fighting against Sendai, with their lightning spam and plants and whatnot... does Anri have something that could swat us out of the sky better than they managed, rather than attack us in a normal fight? Basically feeling we don't need to be toooo paranoid and thus can safely sit still and search rather than "keep moving for safety" or whatever.

Did...did Onmur just accidentally the next update?

Sayaka is with the pleiades though. They would tell her by extension.
Sayaka is part of our group. Given that Oriko doesn't appear to have contacted her (after switching off from us) it's not unreasonable for them to assume we filled her in ourselves.

My worry is that this has the makings of a scenarios where everyone assumes that everyone else filled in Sayaka. Which leaves her entirely unwarned.

[x] Sayaka:
-[x] Airi knows about soul gems. The Pleiades might not, hence Oriko's infohazard warning.

On the other hand, Airi has no knowledge of Sayaka, is super unlikely to talk to her at all, and if we bring up the lichbomb, Sayaka will happily back us up.
Okay, I hate to put things harshly but... This is just broken. Not only are we lying to the person who most hates lies and secrets, (and lying to her because she doesn't like lies and secrets?) which will return to bite us eventually, we're also sending her charging into an infobomb and telling her she doesn't have to be careful about it.
