KInda late now?I mean Sayaka is training with Kyoko, at this point it's more her choice if she wants to stop that for mami's sake...Unless you want to...you know, kyoko.
Sayaka and Kyouko have met.

We still need to ask Yuma to give us the play by play.

And we should still ask Mami if she's OK with the whole thing. We specifically have not asked yet because we didn't want to keep poking at Mami's wounds after the whole thing with Oriko. Wanted to wait for Mami to recover.

That is an issue with the theory. (Or with any theory for why there seems to be so few people.) The city in the series seems to have lost about 90% of its population without any impact to its economy. It still has not only the money for the same huge skyscrapers that you'd find in any other metropolis, but also the need for such large buildings, which implies that they have the people to fill them. But the streets are nearly empty and real estate is so cheap that teenagers can afford what would be a million-dollar condo.

Is this a Hellmouth situation? Did everybody realize that something bad was coming and move away? Or are those buildings full, but nobody goes out after dark because of all the "mass suicides"? Or did a bunch of people move away after the industry that employed them collapsed, like the one that created all those abandoned warehouses and factories? Is Mitakihara the Japanese Detroit?
Ooor the animators simply didn't want to do big crowds. I distinctly remember there being a few shots of some of the girls in big, dense crowds here and there, but mostly, it feels like SHAFT just wanted to spend their budget on the important stuff.

Also, stylistic choice. They used crowds where appropriate, and disregarded them when they weren't needed.

And I'm pretty sure Mami inherited the apartment from her parents, who were apparently quite wealthy.

YOU KNOW we totally need to actually ask Mami about letting Kyouko into Mitakihara to train Sayaka...

... I think that kind of slipped my mind, I think we've mentioned asking Kyouko about it, but we never did ask Mami for permission. So we never got back to Kyouko about that.
Maybe Kyouko can train Sayaka by having her hunt witches, and the two of them can form the core of our anti-witch team? But we kind of want Sayaka for our meguca police force, too... which will probably have to break up fights started by Kyouko on a regular basis.

...I really wanted us to talk to Kyouko today, but we got distracted.

Sayaka and Kyouko have met.
Going by Sayaka's comments, it sounds like they did some "training" at that meeting, which is to say that they sparred and Kyouko beat the crap out of her.

I doubt Operation Downfall happened, because if it did Japan would probably be unable to afford all that cool stuff you see in Mitakihara.
Another thought on this: as in our reality, there would have been a strong impetus to rebuild the Japanese infrastructure and economy after the war (so they could fight the commies), so they could have recovered a great deal. South Korea was also a warzone (technically is still a warzone), and has recovered quite well in a similar amount of time.

I know, but that doesn't mean "Sayaka is training with Kyouko". She seems amenable enough, but we really need to ask Yuma to tell us everything that's happened.

Really, really need to. For shipping purposes.

Good point. But, while a post-Downfall Japan would likely have proper infrastructure and not be in the economic dumps, I don't think it would look like modern Japan at all. In a post-Downfall Japan, it's likely that the occupation would have lasted decades as the US/Allies completely dismantled and rebuilt the country, so the entire society and government would be totally Americanized. All of the reading I have done on Downfall suggests one thing: that it would have resulted in the total and utter destruction of Japan as a country and a culture.

The country's independence would also be a question; would it be a fully independent country, a puppet state, or some kind of associated territory?

Up to how many clones can she make? How long can she maintain them? How far can they go from her? How good is her multi-tasking skill?

I would accept that explanation if her apartment was the only example, but then we've got Homura's apartment, Madoka's house with the huge empty fields around it, the rows of trees and decorative stream leading up to the school... living space doesn't seem to be in short supply in Mitakihara.

Would MacArthur still have been in charge of the occupation? Because he's largely responsible for the Japanese government being kept relatively intact after the war. (And for letting a few thousand war criminals off the hook.) It was an unconditional surrender, and he could have reorganized the whole country, but he thought it would be easier if he didn't and blamed the war on the actions of a few bad apples.

Germany's government totally collapsed and was rebuilt from the ground up during their occupation by the Allies, with the eastern portions being absolutely ravaged by the Soviets, and it hasn't stopped them from retaining their own culture and returning to be an independent nation within a few years (except for the part the Soviets kept). Trying to keep any of the defeated nations as territories would have been incredibly unpopular, as it would have been an act of sheer hypocrisy to do so after framing the war as being to defend freedom and democracy from conquest by fascism.

Alternately, the Navy didn't like Downfall, and wanted to just maintain the blockade until Japan had to surrender for lack of resources. Given how bad the starvation was in Japan by the war's end, that might have killed even more people, but left the system of government intact.

You forgot? We got Sayaclones now.
The concern was more about the conflict of interest that might arise if Sayaka's duties ever required her to keep Kyouko in line.

@The Narrator, @Redshirt Army: That all seems too drastic to me. I think what likely happened is that millions of teenage girls over the centuries wished they could have their own room and not have to share with their parents/siblings/family/etc, and led to the situation we're in now, where all residential building interiors flex and strain in eldritch, non-Euclidean, extra-dimensional ways relative to their exteriors in order to accommodate being absolutely gigantic on the inside compared to what they should be.

Architecture classes in the PMMM-verse probably require at least a minor in advanced theoretical geometry. :V

Or someone wished that real estate was cheap enough that their family could afford to live in a real house?
And a bunch of related areas, yes.

My point is that what you see in the PMMM universe is what you expect when the fundamental underpinnings of reality are malleable, but disproportionately in favor of what a teenage girl would care about enough to Wish over. That's why cell phone technology is years more advanced, despite being 2011, but weapons tech is the same. Residential buildings are bigger on the inside than the outside, and schools are sleek and ultra-modern, and math isn't so hard anymore.

...it is? I recall cell tech in the original show being stuff like flip-phones and maybe a smartphone here and there. The original iPhone came out in 2007, and the iPhone 4 was released in mid-2010, so an upper-middle class schoolgirl having a smartphone in early 2011 isn't all that strange.

Edit- The rest of your points are good, it's just that this stuck out to me.

There's some consumer tech in the series that seems, while not more advanced than what exists, at least more advanced than one would expect to see in most homes or schools in 2011. The digital whiteboard in the classroom is an example. Sayaka's touch-activated lamp struck me as an example at the time, but I've seen several of those on office desks in recent years.

The open-sided CD player that Sayaka and Kyousuke were using isn't something that exists, as far as I know, but it probably wouldn't be sold if it did because it's hilariously unsafe. On the other hand, the fact that they're still using CDs seems downright retro in the age of .mp3's and streaming.

The digital whiteboard is the best example. I had a touch-activated lamp years ago. Sure, it died in like 6 months, but I still had one. And the CD player is just dumb. Also, the holo-fountain and the music store that Madoka and Sayaka were in.

Edit- And those chairs/desks from the school. Are they retractable!?

I forgot about the desks. Although those are a bit impractical. If they retract into the floor then you have to include a shit-ton of space between floors to accommodate them, which is very inefficient design. If it's just that they're removable and then have a digital display on the floor where the desk used to be, then it's just kind of pointless.

It's been a while since I've seen Episode 1. What was odd about the music store? Other than the fact that music stores themselves are rapidly becoming an anachronism....

Mitakihara is so weird.

What's the point of having a classic section when there isn't even anything to buy in it, because everything seems to work digitally? Or do they have invisible CDs?

...huh, you're right about that. I definitely got my animes mixed up there; for some reason I was thinking there were girls in PMMM with folding touchscreens on their phones, but that's a different anime entirely.

"Yes," Yuuki says, pulling a phone out from... somewhere on her costume. It's a high-end model, and very evidently modified with magic judging from the way she just pulled a holographic display out of the screen. You lean forward, fascinated by the way she slides through familiar apps rendered in the air.
