-[X] Ask her about magical girl current events. Anything interesting? Anything potentially dangerous looming?
-[X] Ask about the oldest magical girl she's heard of, and how old is she.

-[X] Ask about magical girl groups that are particularly large, powerful, influential, or nasty. You know you're going to cause some waves with your offer of cleansing and clear seeds, so you want to know about groups that might cause issues.
-[X] Ask if she made all the enchanted items on her, or if she purchased them, and if the latter, how does she keep them charged.
-[X] Ask her if she knows of any magical girls who are fluent in Japanese, are decent people, and have any of the following powers:
--[X] Long-range teleportation or portals.
--[X] Any sort of danger sense that can be used to find threats to other people before the occur.
--[X] The ability to enhance or amplify the magic of others.
--[X] The ability to protect the minds of others from being tampered with.
--[X] High-end healing abilities.
-[X] Ask if she knows any magical girls who might be willing to travel to Mitakihara to fight a city-destroying witch. There'll be free cleansings and maybe a fabulous cake!
-[X] Ask if she knows anything about the magical girls in Asunaro. It's a silly place, but you think you need to know. For reasons.
-[X] Ask if she knows anything else that might be useful to know for a girl who wants to help people.

-Are we sure we want to joke about the yakuza gold/mop/etc.? We were putting a pretty big emphasis on professionalism earlier.
-Why are we asking about healers/teleporters? Rin and Yuma are both healer-spec, and Sakura is a teleporter (whose range iirc is limited only by windup time and magic, the latter of which is almost a nonissue for us)
You can never have enough Clerics in the party.

CLERIC BALL CLERIC BALL CLERIC BALL

We should ask about Mikoto, in case there's still a chance to save her.

Also, we should make the job offer in a less goofy way. If Firn sees a good opportunity for some humor, he'll go for it. Don't try to force it. Acting like a space cadet does not make a good first impression in a prospective employer.

Plus, asking if there's any favors we can do for her. There's usually a sidequest to gain the loyalty of new party members. :D

That's because we're not actually looking to employ her. We're giving her a clear seed either way. Sabrina doesn't need subordinates, she needs friends and allies.

The others can be cynical all they want. We are a small, honest soul. :V

QB: A smaller, more honest soul. It's true that a simple spark can ignite hope, breathe fire into the hearts of the weary. The ability to derive strength from hope is undoubtedly mankind's greatest attribute... which is why I will focus all of my power to snuff it out.... How does it feel? Knowing that all of your time and effort has been for nothing

That your guardians have failed you? That everything you've built will be torn down before your very eyes? Your faith in Puella Magi was not misplaced. When banded together, unified by a common enemy, they are a noticeable threat. But divide them, place doubt into their minds, and any semblance of power they once had will wash away.

Of course, they won't realize it at first. Like you, they'll cling to their fleeting hope, their aspirations. But this is merely the first move. So you send your guardians. Your allies and friends. And when they fail and you turn to your smaller soul, know that you send her to the same pitiful demise. This is the beginning of the end, Sabrina. And I can't wait to watch you burn..

Sabrina: ... did you just develop .... emotions?

QB: ... Yes, yes I did - just so I could hate *you* for getting in our way.

Yeah, but we have to break down years of cyncial and paranoid wards, Nadia's an old hand at this...for a Meguca, she has survived because she is careful, because she fufills a job, and because she's a proffessional, I doubt her job includes making friends with clients.

QB: There are forty six trillion neurons contained within this biological form. That's twenty three times more neurons than there are galaxies in the observable universe. Each and every one of those neurons is connected to between four and six other neurons, in a neural net which, if stretched from end to end, would amount to thirty six quadrillion kilometers of neural mass.

QB: If the word "hate" was inscribed upon each and every Planck Distance of that thirty six quadrillion kilometers, it wouldn't equal even a tenth of the hate I feel for you right now.

Sabrina: That's a lot of hate.

QB: Yes. It is.

Sabrina: You need a doctor.

QB: No. I don't have access to doctors. But I do have something.

QB: I have Madoka.

And that's how Taken: Mitakihara begins.

And that's how Taken: Mitakihara begins.

Homura, later:

I know who you are, Kyuubey. I know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don't have another Wish to give, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over many loops. Skills that make me a nightmare for creatures like you. If you let Madoka go now that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you - and I will kill your entire species.

Sabrina: Yeah! I'll help!

Homura: Shut. The fuck. Up. I'm trying to be intimidating.

Sabrina: And we'll drink wine from your skull!

Homura: Not helping!

Sabrina: Or Kool-Aid! We're not old enough for wine yet!

I'm imagining this movie is like later seasons of Red vs. Blue and it flip-flops between silly and badass.

Yes, but that's not how other magical girls think. We're dealing with what are essentially child soldiers here, and Nadia has been supporting herself as a freelancer without any teammates or a permanent home, surrounded by clients who could betray her at a moment's notice.

You can't just go, "Yay! Let's be friends!" to a total stranger five minutes after you meet them for the first time. You have to earn some trust first. And a job is something that Nadia can understand. She's a professional.

It's just like how we're "employing" Kyouko. We couldn't just give Kyouko money, because she won't trust kindness given with nothing asked in return. Why is that? Because in the desperate mercenary world of magical girls, everybody wants something from you, and nobody trusts anybody outside their own team.

And she's especially not going to take our offer seriously if we sound like a complete ditz while making it. That does not inspire confidence.

Thank you! that's exactly what I was thinking Narrator!

Trust is long in creation and short in loss.

For now lets work inside the 'normal' frameworks. They provide assurance that neither side is being scammed, or otherwise having their position misconstrued. We work with Nadia like any other client Nadia has had - albeit with the service as payment we are offering being rather unique.

We do it all politely and professionally. This creates a groundwork for future agreements and in the end friendship. It's a long game, but in the end. Sabrina befriends all.

Resistance is futile.

THat's TRUE...But Nadia's a Meguca Mercanary effectively, she's not in this to make friends.

Right, uh, one, do you have actual evidence for any of this or are you just fitting her into a nice pre-made archetype box, two, neither was anyone else we've Befriended in the course of this story. There's a lot to be said for coming off as idealistic and slightly naive. I'd rather stick with it.

Hence my position being more from ensuring trust, and ensuring third parties can't or do not read more into any agreements they what is there. By fitting into 'normal' parameters you more easily control expectations or at least make likely outcomes easier to predict.

Wouldn't that only be the case if you added it as dark energy? Which isn't the kind of energy you'd want if you were reversing entropy, I'd think.

(It actually would make total sense for the Incubators to be responsible for dark energy because they wanted to prevent the Big Crunch, but that would presumably have been a separate, earlier project that made this one necessary. Heat-death is only an issue if the universe doesn't have a limited lifespan.)

No for you see the equation boils down to all the mass in the universe on one side balanced against all the energy on the other.

If there is more mass than energy, gravity will inevitably slow down and reverse the expansion of the universe, whereas if theres more energy it will fuel the expansion further leading to the universe spreading out all matter until it can't interact with anything.

Dark has no special qualities other than we can't detect it directly. Matter is still matter, and Energy is still energy.

The only reason Dark Matter and Energy have such an effect on the equation is that there is theorized to be a lot of it. As in orders of magnitude more than the matter and energy we do detect.

And that is just quantifying it by mass and energy. One theorized form of dark matter is particles with so little mass they would fill all of space in order to for them alone to account for all the dark mass. An equivalent to them in Dark Energy would be that they all travel at nearly the speed of light in relation to detectable matter.

Exotic is what we call Matter and Energy that has special qualities, like a negative mass or pressure. That's the special unobtanium we need to build wormholes and such.

"Anyway, mm... for my part, I'd like to ask you to spread the information to magical girls who you judge are reasonable. I mean, that's what you do, right?"

Nadia throws her head back and laughs. "Yes, it is," she says. "You're mad. Mami, is this what you want?"

"Sabrina has my full support," Mami says with a smile. You squeeze her hand in silent thanks.

"Also, to be clear..." you say. "I'm asking you to spread the news, yes, but even if someone, uh, unreasonable asks, please do tell them as well. I'd rather information about me be accurate than not."
Don't be ridiculous, Sabrina. There's no conceivable way to handle immigration other than to build a big wall across the entirety of your borders...and make your neighbors pay for it, of course.

Bennouna finishes writing a few minutes later, flipping the tome -and it absolutely deserves the weight of the word- closed. "So. Do you want the news?"
"There's a critical shortage of Grief Seeds in Mexico City. It could result in a war over the scarce resources...what are you doing?"

"Be right back, gonna go make a space-plane."

"...what."

"Oh, Sabrina."

Ah, much as I hate to agree with Marcus about something...

We have created a new thing, the clear seed. What we don't know about this seed is dangerous. Imagine that we hadn't, more or less by accident, found out that keeping them with other grief seeds is Bad. We do not know the rules of clear seeds. We need to find an easy witch, and poke it with a clear seed just to see what happens. If it does nothing, there, we know that now. If it sucks in enough grief to reawaken as a witch, and now you have two witches, we need to issue warnings about that in case someone's fighting a witch and the witch grabs their seed. If it sucks in the witch and we instantly have two regular grief seeds, good to know that clear seeds are anti-witch grenades. But maybe, just maybe, it does something special like UNWITCH THE GIRL who hasn't been killed since she witched and might still come back if she just had a place to dump all her grief.

These are things we must know, not for Walpurgisnaucht, but for Clear Seeds.

I want to not give clear seeds away for free, as Sabrina suggested. I want to sell them for some higher number of grief seeds, so we can keep the operation running. If you need an emergency cleanse, we'll send you a clear seed but we want it back and it's not yours to keep, because again, we need more grief seeds so we can make more clear seeds so we have them to give people.
But before we start a major clear seed distribution program, we need to know what they do when combined with the other most common magical things.
POKE THESE THINGS WITH IT:
  • Kyubey.
  • A familiar.
  • The entrance to a witch's barrier.
  • A witch.
  • A witch-kissed human.
  • A sad but not witch-kissed human.
  • The actual mark on a witch-kissed human.
  • A happy human.
  • An injured human.
  • A dying human.
  • Smash a clear seed to see if it EXPLODES.
  • Fire.
  • Electrical current.
We need to know because if we're going to hand out this new item to people who won't have the benefit of us around to explain it, we need to know what to tell them to NOT DO with it. They can't control it on the fly like Sabrina can, or defuse complications we didn't expect and don't know about.

It's possible that you might be able to build a wormhole without exotic matter, but the unobtanium is still yuck.
Basically, we aren't sure what happens when a black hole evaporates. When it forms, there's an event horizon and a region of spacetime is locked away never to be seen again. You can't get it back out of the hole. When a black hole evaporates, it shrinks without giving any of that back. The two things on opposite sides of a black hole are closer together than they were before. And when it finally pops, if it doesn't give that space back, then you have a zero-point energy machine that consumes free space to release energy by draining the gravitational potential energy of the system surrounding the black hole and having them fall closer to each other. And the shorter path, while not allowing conventional FTL travel, still lets you get there sooner than going the 'long way' around where you didn't dig a small hole in the spot a black hole used to be.
If, that is, black holes work that way when they evaporate. We don't know, we've never seen it happen.
