"The work" is "Puella Magi Adfligo Systema". It is loosely based on a popular magical girl series. It cannot "trump" the author because it is written by "the author", who is Firnagzen. If the author says Madoka's hair is green in this story, IT IS GREEN. If the author says a strange new magical girl with bullshit grief-control powers shows up, ONE DOES.
No, "the work" in that quote was "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" and "the author" was Urobuchi. In addition, the work "Puella Magi Adfligo Systema" still trumps the author Firnagzen, despite being written by him, because there are things Firnagzen states that are not part of the work "Puella Magi Adfligo Systema". In the case that Firnagzen said that "a strange new magical girl with bullshit grief-control powers never showed up" he'd be wrong because that would contradict what he said in the work. This applies even if he made a mistake in the work (eg. he added an extra zero in a number in the work. If he does, that number is the canon one).
If Firnagzen said that Madoka's hair is green, it would contradict statements he has made in the past, meaning that again, he can't be right for all of them and was wrong about at least some.
When Stephanie Meyer says that it's a "normal relationship", she is talking about in regard to Real Life, which she is not the author of, so she can absolutely be wrong, because that would mean that she is saying that not only is the relationship normal in context of the Twilight universe, but that what constitutes a normal relationship in the context of the Twilight universe matches what constitutes a normal relationship in the context of Real Life, which is capable of being a contradiction and thus wrong.
