If we said the, 'I didn't think we could be friends'. Perhaps we could take the approach of clarifying that we meant that in the context of seeing her as more than just a generic person in need of our help? Someone we want to survive learning one of the most dangerous truths of the magical girl system who would commit suicide if exposed under the wrong circumstances. If we have to clarify that remark that seems like the most benignly manipulative light I can put it in.

That goes back a long way over at BASQUE, nyan. I randomly catgirl'ed at senpai and he reacted in a manner which was conducive to getting more writing out of him...? And then eventually this happened. And, uhhhhh I decided I liked the Avvie. And... Well, nyan.

So, I sound like bestcat because I am the Omake-Writing Catgirl at BAHHSCQ. I came here for the metabomb and I've been in here a lot lately because... Reasons? Uh. I blame Firn. Nyan.

has also never eaten me, 10/10, best cat:V

So, uh...does anyone mind giving me the lowdown on what's happened since page 1000? I stopped reading about there, and I've been considering joining in.

[X] Hold onto Mami tightly. Turn the grief that you're pulling from your soul gems into solid grief, so it stops pinging Mami's senses as much.
[X] "When I woke up in that alleyway, I knew things about you and the others like you might from reading a story about everyone, bits and pieces, at a remove. I didn't know anything about myself, but I knew that I wanted to help. I knew that I wanted to be friends with the people I knew about. I knew that you were lonely, and I knew why, and that I wanted to make it so you weren't lonely any more. I wanted to make you happy, but I didn't expect you to make me so happy. I don't want to lose that, Mami. I don't want to lose you. But I couldn't stand keeping the truth from you. I'm sorry."
[X] Make sure that Mami is registering what you're saying before starting. Shouldn't need to be said, but there it is.

Screw complex plans. Sabrina is being honest with Mami about her past and her feelings, dammit.

Since this is her mindset before our explanation about why we didn't tell her from the last update, I think there's no need to panic or make any drastic changes to the current vote. Maybe use what we learned to craft a better explanation or something in that vein.

Although it tells us that one way to help Mami and settle her fears is to show her that we do need her. I think crying and admitting that we were scared already helped a bit in that regard.

I've been kicking around a couple thoughts about Mami and her 'foreveraloneness'; this seems like a right time to post them:

I always thought Mami creates her own tragedies, sadly. She tries to be the perfect senior, senpai, someone to looked up to, but of course, there's a chasm between one that looks up to someone and that someone who looks back down.

Mami really only wants someone who'll stay close to her, that'll want her for herself, but when it comes to relationships, she sells herself based on her skills and... her superiorness.

So whoever she picks up isn't actually allowed to be a close friend to Mami, but someone inferior, someone who's there to be taught and taken care of; so eventually they're done with that and there's nothing left, so they leave.

They leave because Mami doesn't let them stay.

So Mami is alone and resentful, of others and of herself.

It's obvious, really. Mami sells herself, but she also gets mad when others seem to want her only for her skills. She brings her own tragedy on herself.

Let her...
The ribbons fall away, and Mami throws her arms around you with a sharp wail. Your arms come up instinctively, wrapping behind her back and pulling her close to you. One hand goes behind her head, cradlin her gently as she sobs into your shoulder. Tears and mucus soak your shirt and skin.

Your own tears join hers.

"I'm s-sorry," you whisper brokenly
. "I'm so, so s-sorry. I never meant to hurt you, I'm sorry."
Actually, let both of them compose themselves a little?

I doubt there'll be a lot of communication happening until they calm down.

Of course Sabrina needs Mami - as a wise wolf once said 'Loneliness is a fatal disease'. I am on a phone atm so eloquence is limited. Sabrina's power issue could actually cause more issues with the other MGs if we had tried to live with them either due to their own issue due to being so much stronger powerwise or at least the preception of. Homura is/was the exception but she has her own issues.

...

I...

Shit I never actually talked about this over here, did I?

Uh.

So: basically, I got sick waaay back in... Mid May. It was horrible and debilitating and I couldn't go up a staircase without subsequently collapsing for hours, but it wasn't particularly sick-ish. No problems with any of the stuff you'd normally expect from being sick, just a crushing exhaustion and a permanent fog on my brain -- and I'd collapse after physical or mental exertion.

Four-ish months later I'm still recovering from this helldisease. There's still a permanent fog in my brain, and it makes keeping track of things hard. If anyone's noticed a tendency to vacillate on issues, I blame that -- it's hard to stick to your guns when you can't keep ahold of the reasons you chose those guns for in the first place. Fortunately, what it doesn't do, for the most part, is prevent me from being smart about things in the short run -- I can work things up just fine, I just might not still understand all the motives behind it a day later.

Things have been getting gradually clearer. I think. Once in a while I'll have a brief spat of total clarity and everything is right with the world again, so I have high hopes for an eventual full recovery.

... That's all, nyah. You can stop staring at me now.

I'm figuring it'll take Sabrina a bit before she's able to talk about things. But I'm not going to try to wait for them both to be completely calm because often times a person has 'calmed down' only once they 'know' what's going on. I don't want Mami to 'know' whatever it is she might imagine to be the case, in her turmoil, I want Sabrina to explain herself.

You could explicit that Sabrina makes sure she can talk straight and that Mami can listen. Ask Mami to hear uu out before going on, get some confirmation she's listening before try to talk to her, because she might be lsot in her own world inside her head right now, or might be after however long it takes for Sabrina to find her voice.

I'm not sure that helps, since we've got the Witchy privacy thing right beside us. Also, doesn't Brina automatically make Grief solid?

Hmm...

This is the mind of Tomoe Mami.

She is lonely. Her loneliness defines her.

All she does stems of that loneliness. That she pushes herself ever harder to present herself as the perfect magical girl is borne of a desire to be looked up to. That she adopts and helps people is obvious.

And every time, they leave her.

It wounds her deeply, every time, another crack in her perfection she desperately shores up.

And yet, she picks another, and tries again.

Kyuubey, perhaps her only constant friend (and even then, not much of one, but one she clings to for a lack of anyone else), brings to her news of a new potential in town, one with gargantuan potential.

And so, Tomoe Mami steels herself to try another time.

Perhaps it'll go better this time.

And then comes the white haired foreigner.

Sabrina.

And she's perfect.

Everything that Mami could have ever hoped for. She needs help; poor dear hardly remembers herself. She's cheerful, friendly, and just as happy to have a friend. She's more than willing to help Mami out in a hunt. She's a terrifyingly powerful magical girl, and more than strong enough to hold her own in a fight. She has a unique power that makes her amazing.

And she's perfectly happy to go along with Mami. She lives together with her, sees her off in the mornings, and then goes on hunts with her. She's even charismatic enough to do what Mami never believes she could, and helps to mend bridges with the other magical girl in town. They banter together, and tease like they've known each other for years.

But.

But.

Mami begins to realize...

Perhaps Sabrina doesn't need her. Sure, she's a little reckless, but she has power and then some to blow through obstacles. Sure, she's a little rude, but she's happy and cheerful and charismatic that people can't help but like her. Sure, she tends to go off on the oddest of tangents, but it's just enough to be cute, on her.

Perhaps Sabrina doesn't need broken old Mami, when she shines far brighter than Mami ever could.

She confesses, in a fit of emotion, baring her soul to this girl she feels she's known for half her life, hoping beyond hope that this time, it doesn't go bad, but knowing that it will, that Sabrina, on seeing how pathetic Mami is, will walk away. Like everyone else.

But she doesn't.

Sabrina picks her up, tells her she's a wonderful person, that she's helped people. That she's worth something.

And Mami lets herself believe.

She lets herself believe that one day she can live up to Sabrina.

That if she keeps at it, she can be as good a person as Sabrina says she is.

Perhaps it'll go better this time.

She doesn't think she can take it if it doesn't.

And so it goes.

They live together, they fight together. She doesn't mind much that Sabrina has to go do her own things, too. She can't be tied down all the time with her, after all.

Mami believes, and it is perfect.

And so it goes...

Then Sabrina says she has something to tell her. Something awful, from the way she acts.

Her worst fears come to life.

That Sabrina knew her from the beginning. From a distance.

Like Kyuubey said: Sabrina was a good actor.

She has nothing left.

I don't see the need to micromanage things that much. Firnagzen isn't pantherasapiens.

I'm not sure that helps, since we've got the Witchy privacy thing right beside us. Also, doesn't Brina automatically make Grief solid?
I will answer this with a quote:
You shake your head. You... You need to clean your Soul Gem. It's not exactly dangerous yet, but still. You're going around in circles. A twist of your will pulls free Grief, sharp and acidic to your mind's eye as it infiltrates between the golden ribbons tying up your hand.

Golden eyes, reddened and puffy from the tears still streaking down her face, twitch open, sightless tracking the cloud drifting out the window. She makes a tiny, worried little whine, arms tightening yet more around you.

Would you have Sabrina start pouring her heart out and Mami only realizing she's doing it after she's halfway through the vote? This isn't something you 'don't micromanage', something you leave up to chance.

Just get any sort of confirmation that Mami's listening, just a nod will do.
