I'm thinking time passes and Homura's not feeling any more charitable towards O&K. Afraid that's how it'll go, and even if O&K prove themselves trustworthy, we'll keep saying we can't trust them because Homura won't let her grudge go.

I mean, it's been only a few days, so things might develop better, but still... This won't be easy.

What?

I guess we should try and make sure they understand we won't hold any grudge over this, even if denied. The fact that she's hearing us out already means a lot?
Ehhhh. Less that aspect, more that she's not losing us to Oriko, maybe?

@Ugolino

[] Thanks, Homura.
[] What I'm asking is for you to trust me with handling them. I understand we can't trust them, but leaving her like this? It's just cruel, and she might die, or worse. I don't want that. Because they're in my care, and because I'm afraid of what'd happened yesterday if we hadn't gotten warning.
-[] So I need to fix this. Out there or inside here, but I can fathom at what's happening, and my best shot, it's out there.
--[] I know I'm asking for a lot. Just the fact you're listening means a lot to me. But is it too much to ask?
---[] If Homura is hesitating or seems like she could agree, tell her that if it's about your safety, you won't mess around. Your own life, Homura, Mami... those mean more to you than Oriko.
----[] Oriko's still your prisoner; if she steps out of the line, tries to take this as an opportunity, you'll go for the gem.
----[] Either way, thank Homura and Mami again. We'll see them for lunch.
[] Communicate results to O&K.

The thanking Homura for trusting Sabrina part got lost at some point? Or was that not wanted?

Moved around. Did we tell Homura we wanted to talk after lunch, or is it only there in the Day Planner?

?

EDIT: Haven't made these changes. Just proposing them. I think the vote can go as is.

Is it too much to ask might get "Yes."

Not quite sure about the green line. Rest seems...okayish.

That's... actually quite humbling. Homura, of all people, trusts you.

You swallow. Despite that, despite your promise... one last try. Just one last try, you promise yourself.

"Homura... thank you," you say softly. "What I'm asking is for you to trust me with handling them. I understand we can't trust them, but leaving her like this? It's just cruel, Homura, and she might die, or worse. I... something's definitely wrong and I don't want to just leave it like this."

You look at Oriko and Kirika. Sensing your eyes on her, the seer looks up from Kirika, meeting your gaze steadily. Sea green against clear blue. She arches one elegant brow at you. You shrug, grimacing, and she nods slowly.

Homura sighs, the sound transmitting telepathically. "Why do you care?"

"Because they're in my care," you say. "She's helped us. Like yesterday; we wouldn't even have known if Oriko didn't warn us. Sayaka could have been eaten by a Witch."

Homura's silent, but you can sense her displeasure and faint dismay even over telepathy.

"Homura, I... look. If it's just my safety you're concerned about, I won't mess around. I promise. Oriko's still my prisoner. If she steps out of line, or goes for an opportunity, I'll go for the gem," you glance at the seer again. She's now playing idly with Kirika's hair. Would you? Do you really have the heart to?

"No. It's not just that," Homura says. She doesn't say anything more, but... you think you know. Or you can guess. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory must have been... must be a bitter taste to stomach.

A long moment of telepathic silence later, you continue with a sigh. "I need to fix this, Homura," you say wearily. "Out there or inside here, I'm going to try and fix things. I have an idea of what's happening, and I think my best shot is if I can get them out of this house, but... Homura, I said that if I couldn't convince you, I wouldn't bring her out. I meant it."

You pause. "That's what I've got, Homura. Is it too much to ask?"

There's a long pause before Homura responds. "Yes. Mikuni is too dangerous, and Kure isn't much less, she says. And then softly, so softly you nearly miss it even with her speaking directly into your mind, she adds something. "I'm sorry."

You exhale.

That's... it, then.

"OK," you say, disappointment leaking into your voice. "Thanks for humouring me, Homura, Mami."

"Sabrina... be careful, OK?" Mami says.

"Yeah. I will," you say. "I promise. I'll see you both at lunch, OK?"

"A-alright," Mami agrees softly.

"See you," Homura says quietly, before disconnecting.

Mami... doesn't. "Are you OK, Sabrina?" she asks.

You glance at the duo, still on the bed. "Sorry, Oriko, Kirika. Homura, uh, disapproves. I'll still be sticking around to see how I can help, at least for a while, I think. If you don't mind?" To Mami, you sigh. "I don't know. I really do want to help them, and... I think I get some of why Homura's so worried, but still."

"You're helping me," Oriko notes. "I'm hardly going to say that I mind."

"Yeah," Kirika agrees, blinking orange eyes open to peek at you. "Do your best!"

"Ugh," you say. "I wish I could just get you some asprin and be done with it. I mean... you know. We magical girls seem to still run on our bodies somewhat, so asprin should work somewhat, but... magic, right?" The Soujo sisters seem to indicate that body swapping or something can be done, but you don't know if that's a special case.

Then again, Oriko did say that they... she... they were coming by some time, didn't she? First thing you're going to do is issue them some new pronouns, but that's then and this is now.

"Magic," Kirika agrees, nodding sagely. "Ain't gotta explain shit."

Oriko reaches out and pokes Kirika's mouth. "No." The black haired girl clamps her mouth shut, pouting at the seer.

"Sabrina? Talk to me?" Mami asks, voice quiet.

Hmmmm?

Okay, Homura shot us down. Time for plan B. :(

I guess people are going to want to try different kinds of probably-going-to-fail grief bullshit, so that's something that'll happen. We can't test if Oriko witch hunting would help because Homura shut that idea down...

Taking Oriko's gem with us for today might be how we need to handle things.

We need to have that talk with Masami. It's still a bad idea to do it over telepathy rather than in person, ie: asking Oriko about inviting them to her house.

Let's let Mami know things are okay, and we're working to fix them from here.

I'm left with faint feeling of relief that nothing exploded.

Mmmrmgrllkrgmrgrklmsglkrg...

Let's let Mami know things are okay, and we're working to fix them from here.
And thank her for supporting us. If we had a small chance just now, it was because of Mami, really.

"You're helping me," Oriko notes. "I'm hardly going to say that I mind."
This brings to mind a phrase along the lines of: 'Fear nothing more than somebody who comes at your door with the express intention to help you'.

Don't remember where it's from.

"Magic," Kirika agrees, nodding sagely. "Ain't gotta explain shit."

Oriko reaches out and pokes Kirika's mouth. "No." The black haired girl clamps her mouth shut, pouting at the seer.
Ha... Kirika still manages to be cute while doing something I'd usually get pissed off seeing it from anybody else. :p
"It's rude to do that, you know!" she says chidingly, wagging a finger at you. "If someone's in front of you, you shouldn't be talking to someone else!"

[]Hey, Mami...
[]Ask her what's wrong. If she's just worried about us...
-[]It's okay. I'll find another way to help her I know why Homura's against it...
-[]It's just...I wish it'd worked, and that we could all trust each other.
-[]Thank Mami for her support. It means a lot to us, and Homura heard us out because of her too.
-[] Tell her what you think's going on. Oriko's wish was to want to know what her life's purpose is. It might be that it's not what she thinks it is, or that she can't do it while she's under house arrest like this. Ask for Mami's advice and if she has any experience with what we're seeing now with a magical girl's magic causing her pain and...turning in on itself.
-[]Ask if everything's okay on her end.

Hm. That is an interesting reaction though. She seems to feel bad about not letting us help. The "She's suffering" bit probably reminded her of Madoka.

Once we get to lunch time, we need to get Sabrina her dose of hugs. Mami hugs. Homu hugs, if possible. Mado hugs?

I mean, Kirika hugs are neat, but it's not the same, you know?

But here we are trying to not break the Homu,

"You're helping me," Oriko notes. "I'm hardly going to say that I mind."

"Yeah," Kirika agrees, blinking orange eyes open to peek at you. "Do your best!"
while also being pulled the other way, helping O&K, now on a time limit,
"Sabrina? Talk to me?" Mami asks, voice quiet.
but oh, can we go two seconds without somebody tugging on our heartstrings?

[Q] You're tearing me apart, Mami-chan!

If we wanna give Oriko something to do could we hatch a witch and have her fight it?

Go all the way. Knock Kirika unconscious, hatch a Witch and drop Kirika on the Barrier. Oriko rescue mission, go!

Yeah, not altogether surprising on either count. Probably helpful in terms of Homu relations but a failure in terms of our current goal.

Ehhhhh. Don't think that'd work out- you basically want to trick Oriko's power- plus we couldn't do it without breaking house arrest/leaving a mess anyway.

The issue is Oriko is literally dying from lack of agency. We need to think of a way around that if and when grief bullshit doesn't help.

Damnit, Sabrina! Your spotlight hogging is literally killing the NPCs! :p

Joking aside, added a bit to the proposed partial vote above.

Our next step might be to spell out to Oriko in private what we think her wish's meaning was, based on another timeline, maybe?

It's been mentioned that we should ask Rin to come and see if healing would help. It can't hurt, and seeing how we have no real idea how healing magic actually works, let alone what the difference is between the default healing powers all magical girls seem to get and what specialized healers like Rin and Yuma have. Even with Sakura's teleportation, it'll probably take them a few minutes to arrive, so we can try something quick in the mean time. I'd suggest trying the 'improved multitasking' construct, since that'll let us do more with the little time we have.

First things first; let's ask Rin to drop by. Maybe she'll know what's going on, maybe she'll know someone who'll have a better idea.
If not, we've got a second opinion, we've got a chance to get the arm healed at last, and we've conclusively established that the root issue isn't healable by a dedicated healer. Also, we get an excuse to check up on Rin.

E: Ninjas!

It's useless and a waste of precious time and energy. Oriko's already spelled out that healing won't help since she's not actually "ill" as such.

You move over to the bed, claiming Kirika's chair for now. Raising a hand, you summon the silver glow of your magic to your hand.

"That doesn't help," Oriko murmurs before you can apply.it to her forehead. "Kirika tried that."

So yeah, bad idea and we should know that. Talking to Rin and fixing Oriko's arm can wait since we have more pressing problems.

That's nonsensical. It takes practically no time, and no energy at all.
If we're considering rocking her, at all, for any time whatsoever (and realistically, rocking her for the day puts her out of action for the foreseeable future), we should be exhausting all reasonable steps first. Consulting someone who knows more healing than either of us first is a reasonable step.

This... is a theory. Not even a very good one, for all that we have a dearth of good alternatives. Not really a fact. :V

So, I've got two ideas: the first is a grief item that removes sources of pain by fixing the problem, and the second is a soul poker, so we can see what happens when you poke non-Euclidian soul geometry with a glorified stick.

The first suggestion is serious.

Yeah, no. Did you even read the quote? Healing doesn't work and the precog flat out told us not to bother. That doesn't mean "Get a better healer to be completely useless more efficiently", it means "fix the problem".

Also, those grief ideas are both fairly unworkable. Maybe, just maybe, poking someone's soul with a glorified stick is a terrible idea especially when it's already deformed and causing her pain. The first is literally asking Firn to "fix the plot point pls k thx bai".

To ask Rin a favor is to ask a favor of someone who's friends we beat the shit out of a few nights ago. And we already know healing magic isn't what Oriko needs. Waste of time and resources.

It's a theory supported by the manga, since that's where Oriko figured out how to use her powers properly because what she really wants is to save Kirika. It's the most likely solution, and probably far better than a grief "fix it" button.
