Okay, so, I can't call credit for calling this exact thing.

But I definitely did call regretting reading the note.

So, uh.

Told you so. :p

(Yeah, okay, my statement was more based on "Blackmail" and less on "Traps," but the general statement of "if we don't read her notes she can't hurt us with them" stands.)
Link, I'm going to be completely honest with you: you weren't helping. Yes, you were right, it was dangerous, but instead of arguing "this is an obvious trap, we should approach this with caution," you argued "THE INFORMATION WILL CORRUPT OUR MINDS, ORIKO SEES ALL, BURN THE LETTER", which, if anything, seems to have consumed the "should we check this thing for traps" instinct in favor of a massive argument on the mechanics of feasible time travel. Once you start posting, the discussion shifts off "hey how should we approach this thing" and onto "oh shut up and grab the letter it's not the fucking king in yellow."

So yeah, we wouldn't be nursing a serious injury if we'd followed your advice, but your advice seems to have actively driven the thread away from a more cautious mindset, so I personally doubt it.

Seems like as good a time to drop in as any.

Except for the fact that this thread is bugfuck insane.

Shadowrun levels are only a few steps lower than I'd expect of players in one of my legitimate SR games. Everyone's power-set is a touch scarier than most other Quests portray them. Most importantly, everyone here spends too much time nitpicking and sniping.

All according to Oriko's plan.

No. Seriously. Think about it. She's a precog. She sees the most likely path - actions taken, her own reactions and the consequences thereof, etc. She is aware that her trap harms SV-chan. Maybe she doesn't know exactly what Sabrina is, but she has a fairly good idea of her abilities. And her personality. Connections, present and future. Motivations. Same with Homura and Mami.

'This was, and remains, necessary'. That was the wording of the note. This expresses some measure of remorse - Oriko is still a person. It also shows a guiding Higher Purpose. She honestly believes that it's the only way. That it's right. She doesn't expect forgiveness, so this is the closest she can come to closure and acceptance. Sabrina has been written off as dead already.

We have to die. Why? Why attack Sayaka, instead of gunning for us directly via Kirigank or booby-trapped toilet? It's not a sense of fair play. Somehow, she needed Sayaka hurt but not dead. She needed the team hurting, emotionally and physically.

Oriko knows, give or take, where Madoka is - if you can find Sayaka, you can find Madoka. Madoka isn't on her hit-list, which means, logically, that there is a bigger threat present than a witch that can crack the earth in half.

Not something so monstrous as to make her go Murderface. No, Oriko has been playing games. Partly, I'd say, because with each interaction, she learns something new, sees a bit further, more clearly. Partly, because she's been trying to push us into a corner since day one. She's been winning. Precog is kind of a scary power. Sort of how Cthulu is kind of disturbing. It's past the scale you normally use. You don't have operational guidelines.

So, we're a chicken with its head cut off. We don't know what to do. And she's been trying to keep it that way. She takes two steps forwards, by virtue of making one that puts us back. Technically, our growth can outpace hers - our stable of Meguca have no effective magic limits. Every ally of ours is a huge boost in firepower. Meanwhile, she has to wrangle with timey whimey precog, social-fu despite a certain stigma to her name, and a very real limit to literally everything she does. She has to manage her every second cautiously, which has to be a massive mental strain.

The moment we push back, she starts losing and doesn't stop. Can't, because she will break. All her plans laid to waste, her power useless in the face of this enemy that she's so sure has to be stopped.

[X]Heal up. Ask Mami and Homura for help. Degriefs along the way. Stay timestopped, extra time for Oriko to turtle up is extra time she can also use to hurt more people.
[X]Express disbelief that she cobbled together a goddamn landmine, and then deployed it in a residential area. This is important, we can't have Mami too mad about us being impulsive. Need to stress that we didn't think Oriko was so hell-bent on killing, that her actions so far had been threatening, dangerous, but never so out and out malicious.
[X]While patching up, plan out specific search areas; Mami's, Homura's, both being personally significant to us, both schools by nature of their size and ease of access, Kirika's and Oriko's for their even more obvious ease of access, then Witch Barriers, especially those Homura has no foreknowledge of, because we can't actually pinpoint individuals within, and Kirika can shut down the Witch's ability to do more than swipe at them. Also the hospital. She sent us there before, and villains always return to the scene of the crime!
[X]Stay together, go over everything before touching it. Stop to eat, drink, and pump selves full of caffeine as needed. Corner store larceny if other options not available ex. Homura's shield-stash of Red Bull and jerky for Madoka-stalking.

Edit: Moar Logic. Less Griefspirals.

Yay monster write-in.

Hmm. Can Oriko not predict exactly how Sabrina will react to a given bit of information, because Sabrina's decision-making is, well, being done by us? So maybe Oriko has to be a bit... scattershot or generalized in how she approaches us? Or she has to go for more clear things.

For example: she might not be 100% sure on how we would react to a written message. But she would be sure on what happens if she *successfully* kills Sabrina. Because Sabrina will be dead of course. (Sidenote: was this meant to be a genuine attempt to kill us, or just to wound/cripple us?)

I'm wondering why exactly Sabrina did this? Sabrina isn't Madoka and, hell, Sabrina can cleanse her own soulgem! Sabrina is also unlikely to Witch out at the whole MG->Witch reveal.

Is Sabrina the main target here perhaps? Or is Sabrina just a key actor that could set something off? Or is she just a chaotic factor for which it is hard to account for and thus a huge problem?

@Mecrazyfang
Just a question man but Madoka isn't a MG.

So [X]While patching up, plan out specific search areas; Madoka's, Mami's, Homura's, each being personally significant to us,

Is kind of confusing.

Also Sabrina isn't the main target, I don't think. I do think she is an obstacle that Oriko needs out of the way, long enough for her to do what ever it is she is planning. And Firn already said that her precog isn't infallible. So she may have left other notes with bombs strapped to them (Scary thought that). The IED wasn't enough to kill, it was enough to force Sabrina to stop her chase of Oriko.

So she may have left other notes with bombs strapped to them (Scary thought that). The IED wasn't enough to kill, it was enough to force Sabrina to stop her chase of Oriko.
...If that's the case, do you think Oriko would have some kind of dead-man switch linked to all those bombs, as incentive not to kill her? ('cuz the city'll blow up if we do).

The IEDs aren't enough to take out an building. If anything she'll have Kirika go disarm them tomorrow. I can almost put money on Kirika having set these up while Sabrina was in Kasamino.

Madoka is Homura's reason.

Then who is the target? Honest question here. Instead of saying "It can't be us." I've decided to say "It might be us, so let's assume it is but be open to new ideas."

An IED does damage. It has at least a peripheral chance of doing damage to the Soul Gem. It's also a freaking explosive. Laying that shit down, in an area that has even an outside chance of someone walking in, you have to be aware that they could die.

Either Oriko sees one future, in which case she's well on her way to a god-complex, or sees many possibilities, acknowledges limits to her power, and curbs her bets. Frankly, someone who can out-last her, is as random as SV, has all this meta-knowledge, and this much power, is a shoe-in for 'most likely to ruin all plans'. Our existence is a spanner in the works.

Maybe she wants us gone, because we're so damn hard to predict? Thus the indirect moves, attacking Sayaka and using Kirika for the second conversation. The distance, as it progresses, suggests to me that she's quickly realizing that we're getting trigger-happy. To me that says that she sees possibilities, multiple.

Yeah, no. If she's degraded to that level of kill-happy, she'd have hired a few snipers. Homura would be minus a Gem by now. That kind of rampant damage and carelessness is lower than Homura's worst. She doesn't have a huge Griefbomb built up.

Intent. Yes. She wanted to ruin our day. But she is trying to save people. Levelling an entire city is pretty heavy to consider, and there are better options available to her.

[x] Encase the wounded areas in grief to prevent blood loss.
-[x] Tell Mami that we're okay, that we used our magic to stop the bleeding, and ask her and Homura to heal us. Keep grief pulling, and be sure to convert to marbles every once in a while.
--[x] Make sure you're keeping everyone's gems clean, we don't want any freak outs.
[x]Stay in timestop.

Priestly Demolitions Incorporated
That is an awesome name for a demolitions company.

Now, imagine a whole bunch of priests, in their robes. All solemnly and carefully uncrating explosives, and setting them up in a building, around the support pillars. Timed cords are laid with meticulous precision to ensure the correct sequence of detonations. And then, job done, they all meet up, and retreat to a safe distance. Perhaps one of them speaks a short benediction, and finally, they ceremonially push the button. The explosives go off with a heavy thud, muted by the distance, and the building slowly collapses in on itself.

(Shut up this is my imagination.)

All I can think is 'AdMech demo team', now.

(Also, there are shortcuts to totaling a city block or ten, but we'll know to worry if we hear about sixty tons of rocket fuel going missing. Or see Oriko driving a Topol-M TEL through the middle of town, possibly wearing a ushanka on top of her bucket).

Odd line of thought. Are Puella Magi immune to Government Watchlists? Generally, if you start racking up transactions related to, say, the base materials for Meth, or explosives, some accountant or another forwards that up the chain as per protocol, and the purchaser gets audited silently.

But that could make The Masquerade very flimsy.

So it is entirely possible there's a bunnycat in every government building, going over literally every single paper forwarded to every single employee...

The name of the witch from Chibi's Witch quest....basically a SI to torment the players and behaves like a umineko witch, the one with the "tell the truth in red" type.

Could we add a little something to the vote? Something like:

[] Hold on to Mami.

Something to keep her grounded, in case she flips the fuck out. I mean, let's try to figure out what's going through her head right now.
Firnagzen/Sabrina said:
It's eerie, here in the time stop, with nothing to accompany you apart from the thundering of your heart and the slow breathing of the three of you. There exist, apparently, acoustic chambers soundproofed so perfectly that the silence drives people mad, and the longest anyone has ever lasted in one of those is about twenty minutes. You imagine much the same applies here.

If they actually do that it should be worth extra!
