On that note, would be interested to hear the thread's thoughts on how to set up an education system for the Ymaryn.

Some initial musings:

Most of our population are farmers, and that will be true for a long long time. That means that if we want to get kids educated, the lessons either need to happen in seasons of low demand for labor (centralized schooling during the off-seasons) or need to happen according to personal schedules (e.g. traveling tutors).

Things that are important to teach: literacy, laws, forestry?, basic arithmetic?, geography?, Ymaryn values (especially Love of Wisdom)

Ideally the education system would be a way to identify promising individuals (i.e. those with potential Heroic or Genius stats). The most straightforward way to go about this would be national standardized testing.

We'd need to come up with a method of testing that actually examines underlying, innate aptitude and doesn't fall prey to the issues presented by people born with more resources being able to spend more time studying.

I have no real ideas on how to do so, aside from hoping the Ymaryn manage to stumble upon some version of a nonverbal IQ test (Crow's Progressive Matrices, anyone? :p)

By the way I am now entirely convinced that there's magic in this world.

There's no way some of those geological features were formed naturally. Like the mountains are all over the place.
