I feel I should correct this. Ki sense can go much farther when you know the person in question. All of Goku's long range ki sensing were with people he knew.
Um, what part are you correcting exactly? This doesn't imply that having several people in the same place increase the range they can be sensed, just that if you recognize the ki signature you will pay more attention to it or recognize it more easily. Goku's long range ki sense is to people he knows because he uses it as a frame of reference to instant transmit so of course he senses people he knows so that he knows he is going to the right place. Furthermore, we know that distance at which things can be sensed increases with the ki sensing skill, in which Goku was particularly skilled as proven both by the distance at which he ITs, how he can intuit the hidden PL of his opponents, the fact he is one of the first characters in the series to learn it and thus has been doing it for years and, in this quest at least, due to the fact that the genki dama relies mostly in ki sensing.
If anything, you should correct me by saying that ki sensing can go much farther depending on the skill of the one sensing it and that thus there is no fixed distance at which something can and can't be sensed. If you meant to say that the enemy could sense saiyan energy from further away because he knows what it feels like that is not entirely correct, it would just make it more likely for him to pay attention to it when he feels it because he would know what it means.
It is probably that since the kais oversee life they tend to repeat species over different planets or at least their basic characteristics. It would explain why humans are so prevalent in the universo or why there re examples of the same species in different universes: Kais wanted to seed sapient life in a planet and used an already existing one to do so.
I like to think of them as gardeners: They oversee the universe and pretty it up and keep it healthy by checking on how a species develop and if it goes against their principles they send their god of destruction to erase the "sick" planets while transplanting the good saplings to new ground, then repeat the process as deem fit.
It may require an Elite/Legendary feat to do this over interstellar distances. Since ki sense was one of Goku's most remarkable talents (along with, well, punching things)... It may well be that this was one of the areas he was Elite/Legendary in.

I just figured that people can sense ki over much larger distances if they know the person in question. There is a reason that Goku brought exploding Cell to King Kai's planet rather some other random place.

Goku IT to the afterlife is weird enough that I am not sure it should be used as a measure for that. The only ones who have shown themselves able to do stuff like that are either gods, eldritch beings like Buu and fucking Goku. If it were as simple as knowing the person the other z fighters would have been able to perform similar feats.
What is more likely is that you can sense further if you know the general direction in which you must sense, like when Goku asked king kai in which general direction New Namek was.
But they knew how to sense ki and despite their familiarity with it, could not sense goku after namek exploded or while he trained in the afterlife for ss3. If knowing the person were enough, they could check if people died by checking for their ki in the afterlife instead of checking if they couldn't detect it on earth, like with Gohan on the buu saga.
If sensing ki across the galaxy was just a matter of skill we would have been found by the Enemy by now. It would just have to find someone with high ki sense and get him/her/it to look.
If sensing ki across the galaxy was just a matter of skill we would have been found by the Enemy by to find someone with high ki sense and get him/her/it to look.
There isa difference between sensing ki and knowing who you are sensing. It is like trying to look for someone in a crowd. If you encountered them before you will know what they look like and have an easier time finding them but you might still be seeing them even if you don't know their appearance. So even if you had someone skilled enough to sense the entire universe, if they don't know what the ki signature they are looking for feels like then they would be unable to find it. That doesn't mean that knowing what they look like in themetaphor would allow me to see further but if I also knew the general direction they are in, I would have an easier time picking them out or I could strain my eyes to look further in a single direction rather to rely on broad eyesight.
The point I was arguing against is thatknowing someone's else ki lets you sense them from further away. The point I am trying to make is that knowing a person's ki is necessary to know it is them we are sensing so yes, either knowing them or their general PL is necessary to pick them out from afar but because you can't know it is them otherwise, not because it increases the distance. Knowing in which direction they are in, otoh, lets you focus your sense in that direction and thus sense further.
If knowing a person's ki were enough as opposed to knowing in which direction to look for, warriors other than Goku would be able to sense him or kaiosama in the afterlife. If knowing where to look is what helps him though, it explains why Goku can sense king kai since he has been there and know where to look to sense him.
If sensing ki across the galaxy was just a matter of skill we would have been found by the Enemy by now. It would just have to find someone with high ki sense and get him/her/it to look.
We keep our 'public' strengths below a certain value. Even presupposing the Enemy knows of our survival, that approximately tells them 'that planet is inhabited' and not 'that planet is inhabited by Saiyans'. There's probably dozens at the least of other planets with some high powered members of the populace.
Moreover, you are ignoring the argument 'maybe Goku had an Elite/Legendary talent', which is important, as eg treating those as 'just' a matter of skill says that everyone has access to Machine Sense- it's just a matter of skill, after all.
There are several decently strong arguements that would suggest that Goku is really skilled at ki sensing.
I am reasonably sure that at least in close range, you can 'feel' things you recognize from people, including identification, and what Kakara felt from grandma.
@The Fourth Monado , didn't you mention several times that power levels 'feel saiyan'?

You watch from three different perspectives as Cynthia Balor and her next opponent climb up into the stands.
Miss Fren smiles at you. "Ready?"
You nod back, grinning. "Ready!"
She smiles and turns to the audience, powering up slightly. "Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, and good morning!" She calls a bright smile on her face. "Today we're starting in on the second day of bracket events. Joining me in the announcer's box today is the Scion of Goku, Kakara!"
Cheers ring out as people turn to see the stage. You smile back at them, thoroughly coached by Miss Fren. "Hi, everybody!"
She nods at you before continuing. "We're starting today with a very exciting event -- Cynthia Balor, the unexpected winner of Mitsuba Roma's first match, vs. my own cousin Snapp Fren! Both are newcomers, and both distinguished themselves in the preliminary rounds of the championship! Now it's time to see how they stack up to each other."
You watch as the two competitors walk towards each other across the stage. Cynthia looks serious as ever, while Snapp has a cocky smirk on his face.
"What do you think about this match, Scion?" asks Miss Fren, turning to face you. "Rumor has it you predicted Cynthia's victory two days ago. What do you see happening here?"
You look down at the stage. Snapp is saying something, smirk still in place, while Cynthia is looking more and more annoyed. "Cynthia managed to take down a regular fighter in the Cap Circuit," you say. "It was even a close fight. She showed a lot of talent. I think she'll give a good show today."
Cynthia looks up at this, smiles, and calls, "Thanks, Scion!" She cuts off Snapp mid-sentence in doing so. He scowls in annoyance and says something, and Cynthia's expression goes flat.
You feel a little insulted on her behalf. "Snapp looks really confident, but I only remember him facing other newcomers yesterday, and they all looked like close matches. I think he'll struggle to keep up."
The crowd bursts into laughter as Snapp's jaw closes, the back of his neck beet red.
Miss Fren stifles a laugh. "Thanks for your thoughts, Scion. And with that, let's get this match started! Cynthia Balor versus Snapp Fren, the first match of the midterm rounds, begins...now!"
Cynthia is already in her stance. Snapp slowly slides into his own, making a show of it. Now that things have quieted down a bit, you hear what he says. "Let's get this over with. I'll show you what a real fighter can do." He smirks. "Then I can show you my favorite spot in the Hall. View's great through the window."
The audience goes dead silent, gasps of shock ringing out. Your eyebrows go up, and you cut the flow of ki through your throat before turning to Miss Fren to speak in a more normal voice. "Did he just imply that he's going to take her to his-"
She nods, lips pressed together and white with the pressure. "Snapp's not my favorite cousin."
You frown. "He must think he's really cool if he's acting like that and he thinks she'd want to hang out with him."
Miss Fren lets out a startled laugh before ruffling your hair. "Never change, Kakara."
You wave your arms to get her away. "Hey!"
Down on the stage, Snapp shifts his stance. "I can show you-"

WHAM
You start giggling as Cynthia lunges forward and backhands him out of the ring to the sound of shattering wards. The crowd howls with laughter. Cynthia rises up into the air, arms crossed. "Your flight technique? Needs work. Enjoy that walk. A long time alone with yourself can do you good." She turns around. "I, meanwhile, am going to be all tied up reorganizing my sock drawer." She readjusts her glasses, drifting back towards her side of the ring. She pauses halfway there and then turns with an unpleasant smile on her face. "Next time, keep your guard up. You might not embarrass yourself quite as badly. And maybe, if you manage to avoid that, you'll actually get to find out what a woman feels like sometime in your life as opposed to-"
You yelp as Miss Fren claps her hands over your ears. "Hey!"
She snickers, and by the time you get her hands away, Cynthia is done talking, and the crowd is nearly dying with laughter. Snapp slinks back to his spot, humiliated.
* * *
"Wow," says Fennella, grinning. "What a jerk he was."
You don't reply, trying to hide your red, flaming cheeks.
You didn't know you could do that with a banana.
Fenn notices and nudges you, snickering. "Learning something today, Kari?"
"Shut up," you mutter.
She laughs.
From the press box, you hear Miss Fren start to speak again. "And a crushing victory from Cynthia Balor! Remember folks: the match starts when I say it starts, not when you've finished bantering. Next up is Hansha Kumoyen versus Taro Amaya! Taro is a professional and one-time winner in the Cap Circuit -- a regular sight at these matches! Give him a hand, folks."
The man, so old you can actually see signs of age lines on his face, nods gravely to the crowd.
"His opponent Hansha is actually a...well, a newcomer in every way," says Miss Fren, actually stumbling for a moment. You can see why.
Hansha, after all, is only about halfway through her growth spurt. She gives the crowd a slightly nervous smile, nodding to Taro.
Your clone chimes in next. "Hansha is fifteen years old and has never appeared in a tournament before. That said, she made her first appearance in the preliminaries by securing ten easy victories over other newcomers and professionals."
"With such talented newcomers coming forward out of the woodwork, this looks like an exciting tournament already!" says Miss Fren. "For now though, it's down to the match. Contestants, take your places!"
The two get ready -- Taro taking a stance from Goku Style while Hansha settles into Yamcha Style.
"Begin!" says your clone.
Taro and Hansha both blur forward, the young girl, calling out, "Wolf Fang-!"
Taro, however, gets in the first strike, kneeing her in the diaphragm before flipping over his shoulder to the ground and then kicking her into the air. "Kamehameha!"
Hansha barely recovers, rolling to the side. To her credit, she responds quickly -- as she exits the roll, her hand is already up, ki cupped, and she hurls the Spirit Ball down at Taro. He skips back, and she promptly begins to chase him with it.
"She's gonna lose," says Fenn, resting her head on her hands.
"You think so?" you ask.
"Does she look like she's winning?" says your friend. "Kinda disappointing. I was hoping she'd do better. She did pretty good in the prelims."
"She hasn't lost," you say.
Taro turns and backhands the Spirit Ball, shattering it, and then fires another Kamehameha for Hansha to dodge.
"...yet," you say, mirroring your friend's stance.
Things continue in that vein for a while. Taro chases Hansha all over the ring, quickly defeating her efforts to regain the momentum. Finally he backs her into a corner of the ring.
"You've done fairly well," he says, advancing. "That said...please just take a step back. I really would rather not hit a young woman like yourself again."
"What?" she pants, face red. "Because I'm a girl?"
He snorts. "Oh please. Worst beating I ever took was from a woman. No, it's because you're young and I don't enjoy hurting children."
Her eye twitches. You sit up a little straighter.
Taro sees it too. "Are you really going to make me knock you out, child?" he asks, stepping forward.
Hansha's power level, wavering a fair bit lower than the allowed limit, snaps right back up, and she darts forward, punching him in the ribs.
It's the first hit she's landed. She follow with a kick, a punch, another kick...
Taro tries to shift his weight forward to hit back, and she snaps a kick into his forehead as he leans forward. Her foot comes back down and plants, and she shouts, "Wolf Fang Fist!"
Her fists blur as the ki coursing through them finds a new framework, and it's all Taro can do to keep falling back and keep the blows from hitting full force. She lands strike after strike past his guard, raising bruises and welts and knocking his guard wide open-
Her fingers flash open and a ball of ki forms. "SPIRIT BALL!" She throws the blast and snaps Taro's head back before looping around and smashing him to the ground. She flickers her wrist again and again, knocking him around the ring.
She laughs. "Afraid to hit me now?! Say hello to the ground, old man!" The ball comes in for another pass, aiming to smash him through the wards.
Then Taro's fingers flicker to his head.
vip
He reappears just behind her, hands cupped. "No, actually. KAMEHAMEHA!"
Hansha barely has time to turn before the beam smashes her forward and through the wards.
You and Fenn exchange excited grins and stand, whooping at the top of your lungs as the rest of the crowd cheers.
"And a stunning performance from both competitors!" calls Miss Fren. "Hansha was on the back foot for a while, but she rallied in spectacular form there in the middle! Despite that, Taro's experience really paid off for him, and he managed to get away from her and knock her clean out of the ring!"
You and Fenn turn to each other as your clone begins making her own comments. "She's awesome!" you say, grinning.
"I don't even know how she recovered like that!" gushes Fenn.
"Oh, that's a willpower push," you say. "But still! Pulling it off like that? Even he was surprised! She almost had it!"
"Too bad she won't get any farther," says Fennella, sighing. "She really made it a long way!"
"Mhm!" you say as you clone finishes talking.
Fennella looks up at the press box. "That's still weird," she says.
"I mean, it's not like I'm less here," you say. "I'm just also there!"
"Yeah, I know," she replies. "It's just that not a lot of people even learn multiform. I'm not used to it." She sits down, and you follow.
You give her a sly glance after a moment. "So..."
She sighs. "This again?"
"You spent years talking about how much you hated him! You bet I'm going to tease you about it!"
"Ancestors," she groans. "I was mad because he was dense, got it?"
"And now you're happy," you say with a Cheshire grin. "'Cause now he-"
Her hand slaps into place over your mouth. "Am I going to need to gag you?!" she says, exasperated.
You lick her hand. She pulls it away with a disgusted squawk.
You continue to grin. She scowls. "When you get a boyfriend -- oh, when you get to decide who the next Lord Goku is -- I am going to torment you."
"Sure you will," you say, sticking out your tongue.
It's late in the day, and the fights have continued.
Of course the fights have continued; it's why you're all here.
Thing is...
...you're bored. You're really, really bored. You've been the good big sister tonight. You've rode herd on Fasha and Endivan. You've been dealing with Mato snapping at people whenever they try to get him out of his research notes. You've been polite and attentive.
But you are really, really bored.
The last fight of the day looms. Your clones have merged back into you after they ran out of time. It's just you, and you are so...bored. You've been doing nothing productive all day. You want to accomplish something.
So. You leaving? You may pick only one thing -- multiform is done for the day; you used it all.
[ ] Yes.
-[ ] You've been meaning to speak with Meerak. He's still in the cells, although he and the scouts who first stood down get to stay in the nicer ones.
-[ ] You know what? You want to go speak to Jaffur. Things didn't go so well last time, and you want to make that right. Plus Jaron probably shouldn't be around.
-[ ] You want to go flying. (I roll a random encounter).
-[ ] You want to sneak off to speak with the Senzus.
-[ ] You want to write something in.
[ ] ...no. You're being good. You'll watch the last fight.
TWO-HOUR MORATORIUM, AS USUAL. THIS VOTE IS NOW CLOSED.
We're back! Hope you have fun with this one, folks. I figured we could use the chance for a break.

And now we see the downside of using multform. Not being able to use it later.
