Why are you all treating the Scout like a Tolkien Orc?

He's a reasonable being and I hope we can negotiate with him.

But frankly, our FIRST opportunity to negotiate was lost in the last round of voting. The situation has now escalated to where we cannot just banish the fight with a snap of our fingers. In particular, the scout is escalating his own power level and breaking out the transformation he had previously held in reserve and not used, even though we were more powerful than him. He has explicitly said that he's taking the gloves off because:

"I don't want to hurt you, child. But you're leaving me little choice. That other signature I recorded before you smashed my scouter will be here soon. I can't keep fighting like this. This fight is done."

This is when the scout started glowing red and beating the crud out of a barely-adolescent girl whose power level is 200,000. And he's right, he can't afford to keep fighting against a stronger but less skilled opponent the way he was, when yet another such enemy is after him, plus Cabba who's still in the fight and could totally shoot him in the back with a ki blast or six if he lets his guard down.

Now imagine what happens when another girl, at half the power level, with literally an order of magnitude less combat training, comes rocketing in and tries to tackle the guy. If she's LUCKY, the scout continues to use minimum force, and Maya just gets backhanded into the nearest hillside, while he continues to pound on Kakara.

If she's not lucky, he may be unwilling to use minimum force (because he's now fighting like his life is in danger). Or possibly even worse, unable to use minimum force- say, because this transformation is his species' equivalent of the Oozaru form and he no longer has the level of self-restraint he was using earlier. In which case Maya might end up crippled or even dead in very short order. Because that can happen when a fighter at power level 100-150 thousand attacks someone who's up at 300,000, who's already fighting as though his life is on the line, and who has multiple opponents to worry about and can't afford to let them gang up on him.

So basically, no the alien scout is not an orc. But at the same time, the current situation is potentially a life-threatening emergency for Maya, albeit an emergency of Maya's own creation. Because even though he's clearly a person with a sense of honor or decency, and one who clearly doesn't want to hurt the 'child soldiers' opposing him... That doesn't mean he'll abstain from injuring or killing high-powered child soldiers who attack him when his own life is in danger.

Which means our first action has to be the one that protects Maya's health and life. Our second action can be to ask him to surrender.

No? Honestly, I'm having trouble understanding what you're saying, period. It looked like you were suggesting that Kaintukee should alter his plan but keep the name.
Well, let me try to clear up the misunderstanding. Had Kaintukee been present, he could have done any of the following:

1) VERY slightly edited his plan, while keeping the name, after discussing it with people for several hours. Say, to specify a 'reasonable' but high power level for Kakara to use if she needs to intervene to save Maya, instead of just saying 'maximum Masqued power,' which turns out to be stupidly high, literally hundreds of times more than we could plausibly need. This sort of thing would be in keeping with the spirit of what people voted for, but would hopefully avoid disasters coming about because of the original plan just plain failing to consider something important. This is at most a minor violation of reasonable etiquette rules, assuming that the changes are discussed extensively and well in advance.

2) Present an amended version of the plan in toto, as an entirely new plan. Kaintukee actually did that once while participating in the discussion early on. Note that the version most people voted for was v2, not v1. Now to me, this cannot possibly be considered a violation of etiquette. Or...

3) At the very least, Kaintukee would be present to defend his own ideas and explain his reasoning when it was criticized by others. This can make a very large difference in determining the outcome of a forum vote, so ability to stick up for your own ideas or at least have a meaningful opportunity to do so is a desirable thing.

Now, my perception a few posts ago seems to have been wrong. At that time, I thought that you were arguing for both (1) and (2) being wrong, and for (2) being wrong even if someone else was doing it, as I did. It would seem that I was wrong, and that this is all just a misunderstanding. My apologies for the trouble.

Sucal, seriously, your first plan was much better. Also, due to vote weighting, this plan is quite a bit more likely to win than you think, because it only takes three or four voters who think going to 300,000,000 is a good idea to outweigh six or eight who don't... Yes, it's very much in character for Kakara; that doesn't mean we want to live with the consequences of having her do that.

If your top priority is just plain saving lives, and defeating the scout isn't important, then running away IS the best strategy. I'm mainly opposed to it because I'm worried about the scout getting off a signal; we know he has a way to use his ki for that even though we just trashed his communication system.

Yes, I know.

I considered going with the original plan I made, but realized there wasn't enough time left to try and convince everyone. (still wish we had some Tien Style now)

I'm also someone that actually likes the idea of going loud briefly, and its the best chance of resolving this with diplomacy.

Okay. Since Sucal abandoned the plan that I really liked and that made sense in favor of one that screams to the whole galaxy at the top of our lungs "THERE ARE PEOPLE ON GARENHULD WITH POWER LEVELS OF LIKE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS, COME AT ME BRO!" I'm going to do my best to make sure Plan Not Again v3 at least has a clearly defined version up again before PoptartProdigy locks the vote. Because it did get several votes and I owe those voters something.

One, I'd like us to cultivate diplomacy. But that's a lesson we need to learn for the next crisis. It's like...

If you walk on a road, walking on the left side is safe. Walking on the right side is safe. Walk in the middle of the road and you go squish, just like grape... Now, we have a character optimized for walking at the left edge of the road. We took a strategy of walking at the right edge of the road. A lot of people, including the QM, have said that was a mistake in hindsight.

However, that doesn't automatically mean that crossing the road to be on the left side, in the middle of the crisis, is a good idea. There's oncoming traffic. On the one hand, the imminent danger to Maya's safety. On the other hand, the fact that any use of utterly overwhelming power will be noticed by other scouts who will report back that Garenhuld is a planet with defenders of staggering power. Unless overall power levels in the galaxy have gone up a lot farther than we have any reason to expect, we don't want anything remotely like the "power up to 300,000,000" options some have been discussing.

That gets all of Garenhuld squished like a grape, under the truck of the Enemy.

Now, we can always take away a productive lesson from this: we'd have done better to choose to walk on the left side of the road in the first place, fine. But that doesn't mean we can automatically switch over to that side, in the middle of a situation where split seconds count. As Poptart Prodigy said, "violence is violence is violence." And one of the very reasons violence is a bad thing in the first place is because solving Problem 1 with violence tends to cause Problem 2 and Problem 3 to arise... and typically, (2) and (3) are problems it is very hard to resolve without further violence, much harder than it would have been to resolve (1) peacefully in the first place.

Violence tends to escalate and spiral out of control, and it's virtually impossible to stop it just with an act of will once it has begun. It can take desperation and great sacrifices (such as risking our entire planet) to stop a fight without further fighting.

There are two lessons here, either of which is compatible. The "right side" option (Jaffur would consider it obvious, Kakara would be opposed strongly) is "get there firstest with the mostest," and to use violent solutions quickly and abruptly.

The "left side" option (compatible with Kakara's personality) is hey, don't initiate violence if you can think of a way to initiate negotiation instead. I for one would be delighted if Kakara actually learns that lesson. Has it driven home- that precisely because we decided to do something like kick the scout's scouter off his head with violence, we were then forced to resort to greater violence. And that this was a bad thing, and that the best way to avoid future violence is by heading it off early, not by recklessly endangering the planet to head it off in the middle after it's already started.

But that doesn't mean you can impulsively start trying to negotiate in the middle of the battle that starts as a result of your original decision to initiate violence. In this case that would be taking a suboptimal choice that can work (brute force) and compounding it by being indecisive.



Anyway. Plan Not Again v3 may not be the best possible plan, but a lot of people support it, and no one moved out to support plans I think are better. So it would be bad faith of me to do anything other than make sure that Plan Not Again v3 is adequately represented.

Ah, crapbaskets. I was so focused on the immediate puzzle and the dangerous approaches being thrown around that I neglected to really analyze one of the spitballs.


Yammar solves the problem. He is an expert fighter, and likely to be instantly available. There are serious implications to calling in a patriarch, but those aren't necessarily bad for Kakara. She is not a normal scion with normal plans in a normal situation. She's leading the response to the first external threat since the exile began at the same time that she is plotting a coup amidst the other clan's official leadership being completely impotent.

Yammar benefits. Tradition demands that he stay aloof, but nobody would fault him if he took over a mutual foreign policy emergency at the direct request of a scion. This is also good for Kakara, because part of the plan is Yammar and Apra building support around themselves against the current current leadership and its responsibility for the Clan Vegeta situation of not having a functional lord or scion to call.

Kakara might seem as if she would take a bit of a knock, but it can be argued that she was basically calling in the other lord instead of a patriarch for these purposes. She's ultimately still a child, and her previous example of openly challenging Yammar himself would help defuse suggestions that she were acting out of cowardice instead of responsibility.

Berra would take a hit, but undermining him with the results of the situation he created is part of the plan. Any Vegetans who might be inclined to talk smack about it can be shut down hard by merely hinting that the situation is the result of their Clan's mess and resulting inability to properly pull their weight during the first external threat in the history of ever and can have their sentiments captured in support of Yammar. Gokun might be a larger problem, but the most rebellious are exactly the ones Kakara's plot is trying to draw away from Berra and into their court.



Or you and others could not engage in the "I told you so" game, since that's something @PoptartProdigy explicitly said was not just "frowned upon", but not allowed in the thread. Just a protip.

I am well aware of what was written. "Protip": it had to be explicitly written in the first place due to the natural response to the sheer scale of the catastrophic consequences of the poor decisions, and still barely contained things. Repeating that dismal performance on a grander scale the very next turn, especially if it's for a minority plan which only won due to vote weighting, will boil the pot lid or no.

Actually, @Lailoken... As of this moment, plan "Leg it" seems to be winning. I am deeply, deeply concerned that it will result in the scout in turn getting away or signalling his friends, but it's winning. I think.
