-[X] Elaborate that you believe he'd be act in what he believed to be the best, fairest way. That may not be what she would want/be happy with, and it'll close some paths her life could take. But it could also be exactly whats she wants and needs, and grants her opportunities she never would have had otherwise. But there's a high chance it'd happen anyway, and choosing to tell him now would mean that there's a better chance for a good outcome.

Smashing victory for "Yes," with a whopping 75% of the vote. Invalid votes were removed from this tally. Votes with smart-ass invisitext write-ins were merged with whatever vote they were without the invisitext. ;) Your update shall arrive later today!

Alright, that is enough silliness clustering the thread. Time to put an end to this:

"Secret technique of the Bakka style martial arts! Pun in hell!"

"C-C-COMBO BREAKER!"

"Yes."

Did I really need a whole spoiler box for that?

These Updates Seem Shorter Than They Used To Be
"Yes, I'm sure," you say, letting all of those considerations fade away. Yes, those are tradition, and yes, Dad screwed up once...but you remember the other things he's done, too. Dad's a good man. He'll be good to Maya.

And to be honest, it looks like she needs it. You wince. What you said about why you couldn't teach her sensing was honest, but also a little bit manipulative. Maya looks really scared and very unsure of herself right now. You go and give her a hug. She returns it, and if she grips hard enough to pulverize a mountain or two, what's the harm?

"...okay," she whispers, burying her face in your shirt. "Okay." You feel the fabric getting a bit wet. "Ju- just pro- promise you'll be there?"

"Yes," you say. "Of course, Maya."

"Do we ha- have to do it now?" she whispers, clenching her grip.

"No," you say. "We have a little while. I'll tell him this weekend. Okay?"

You feel her nod. You continue to hug her for quite some time, letting her calm down and believe that it's really going to be alright.

And in the meantime, you send out the news.

One, Three? Dunno if you're busy-

This is Three, I am, catch me up later. Sorry, gotta go!

This is One. Dad's just letting me read right now. Why, what's up?

You take a deep breath. Well, Maya asked me about ki sensing...

* * *
Right on the edge of the clones' maximum separation distance, another you -- Number One -- freezes for just a fraction of a second.

You then go right back to note-taking in your book, thinking over the news from Two.

Your gaze flickers up to Dad where he's sitting in the corner. He's reading something that looks like an investigation report -- maybe from the Peat investigation? Doesn't matter, really, but you're curious.

At the very least, pondering the issue of how to break the news about Maya to him distracts you from the mind-numbing drudgery of delving into the finer points of Vegetan politics.

As with your Gokun education, your education on Clan Vegeta has proceeded onto a more in-depth tutelage following the basic grounding you received last year.

So far you just feel like you're learning about how little you know.

For one thing, your protocol lessons have been expanded. While before you thought you knew how it was proper for a Scion to act, now you're not so sure. Because while you heard about things like, "Lady Scion," and the proper way to bow or not bow, you're now coming to understand that you hadn't even started to learn them.

Namely, you're becoming aware that all the Vegetans who have called you "Lady Scion" are basically saying that they want you to start making babies as soon as you can so that you can take over from Dad.

You make a face, remembering that. You've always known that you'd need to give birth to the next Scion, but it's always been a long time away. You don't like being reminded that you'll be expected to do that. It sounds uncomfortable and gross and painful and- just urgh!

Although to be honest, the rest of what you're learning isn't that much better.

Vegetans are Exiles too. They're still saiyan. But getting so much into them has really been teaching you...

...they're a whole different people over there. In the past half a year you've discovered a dozen different ways in which you've insulted Head Raditz, over and over again, in a way that would be grounds for him to issue a challenge if things weren't so messed up. You've figured out that the way you act around Vegetans, while looking polite and friendly to you, is actually threatening to them because of how not done it is for nobility to chat casually with the lower classes.

What you've learned is that the Clan that your people make fun of for being stuffy and overly formal is actually comprised of some of the most tolerant individuals in the galaxy, who have been doing you a massive favor without even being asked by forgiving you your various social transgressions against them. They're being downright saintly. And all because you're from Clan Goku, and the Vegetans know you don't do that kind of stuff.

You honestly owe Head Raditz an apology. And you now know how to give it to him properly, too.

But ultimately, all of that is in the past. You have other things to worry about at the moment.

Namely: Two has just informed you that you have the responsibility of telling Dad about Maya, who Two has finally gotten to agree to opening up.

Communication and Intrigue Skills both improve by small amounts but do not level. Intrigue is about halfway there, Communication about an eighth.

Comprehensive knowledge of Vegetan Houses gained: you will reliably know the names, agendas, Heads, and Heirs of all Vegetan Houses.

Protocol Education Complete: You are now thoroughly schooled in the protocols of noble behavior in both Clans, and will automatically use such in its appropriate contexts. You will no longer take hidden penalties from Vegetans for failing to do so.

Trait Revealed and Developed: [Gokun Foreigner-->Knowledgeable Gokun Foreigner]

How do you tell your father about the situation with Maya?

[ ] Write-in.

THIS VOTE IS NOW CLOSED.

...and that's your lot.

An all write-in vote? Now that's just cruel.

I have no regrets.

Now, before we move on; I will include a lengthy moratorium on this vote, and encourage you all to make use of it to figure out what phrasing you want to use. In particular, consider what you're trying to accomplish in telling Berra about this; I know some people have very complicated feelings about him. I will be throwing out any votes posted before the end of the moratorium, so be aware.
I know you were looking for this. Were you expecting delicious, tasty spoilers? Not this time~! XD
Clan Vegeta is much more formal than Clan Goku, and has a far greater emphasis on protocol and manners. They are used to the disparity and, while it does still offer a mechanical malus that Kakara has hitherto been unaware of, they don't hold it against Gokun in the long-term. In fact, they consider it rude to bring the issue up, which while polite is fairly counterproductive to actually solving the problem.

The long and short of your newly revealed and developed trait is that you'll stop unintentionally insulting Vegetans everywhere you go. This will reduce the malus to interactions with them. However, the fact that you know to do that much means they'll start holding you responsible for what things you do miss, which is why there's still a penalty at all. This will mostly color the tone and flavor or how I write-up failed rolls.

Enjoy!

This vote will not open until the update have been up for five hours.

You just had to post right before I leave for work. :wtf:

I like how you've done the difference between Gokun and Vegetan customs. I'm guessing that was the new trait? Or was that one related to mistrusting Dad?

Vote-wise, maybe start with "You know our friend Maya?", then straight into a month ago we found out she had ki, spent the last month training her and trying to convince her to let us tell you willingly.
Prevaricating isn't going to get us anywhere.

Ooh, that is bad timing. My condolences.

That hasn't fully developed.

Yet.

Six months. Remember, the last update time-skipped you up to midsummer.

Honestly, I think maybe we should start off by apologizing to Berra for keeping this a secret from him. It'll probably be a good idea to let him know that we are actually sorry that we didn't tell him, and that we told him literally the second we were given the go-ahead.

Then I'd advise just coming out and laying out the basics: we met a Ki Talented human who knew that we were Ki Talented too, but she was shy and scared and didn't want anyone to know... so we agreed not to tell anyone unless she gave us the okay. We trained with her and made sure she wasn't discovered, and we repeatedly asked her to be more open to sharing the idea. Also, apologize again, this time for lying to him at those times we trained her.

Then, and only then, reveal that it is Maya. Share how she's so afraid of the reactions she would get from the "regular adults". Let him know that she knows nothing about the masquerade or Saiyans, just about Ki. And point out that you were keeping an eye on her during her entire training... and tell him (whether or not honestly i couldn't say) that you would have told him regardless of your promise if there was any way at all that she was a danger of revealing the masquerade. (Despite not being a part of it.)

But we're not sorry about it? We did nothing wrong. I guess we could lie but that would be being manipulative.

Oh hell no. If it's a lie then we establish that Kakara's ok with lying for the goal of nothing more than dodging punishment, which is amoral. If it's the truth, that's even worse because it means Kakara doesn't value integrity and friendship nearly as much as she should. You do not break promises if you can at all keep them. You ESPECIALLY don't break promises you made to your best friend, who shared with you her biggest secret in such a massive showing of faith.

Not as much chatting as I'd hoped, but then going by time zone conversions the Americans (North or South) were asleep, the Europeans were asleep or at work, and the Aussies were at work or just getting off of work, so I might have expected that, had I thought a little harder. D'oh. Seems all of our disparate time zones can agree on one span of hours to be a not-terribly-wonderful time for posting on forums. Nonetheless, voting is now open. I'll just leave it open for a little bit longer than I'd planned to allow for the quiet hours.

In other words, you believe that this secret is more important than what could conceivably be the lives of your entire race? Because if the masquerade was broken, it could very well lead to war with the local human populace... they seem to be likely to be xenophobic, after all. And if that manages to bring the attention of a DBZ-level Big Bad on our heads... well considering that this group of Saiyans seems generally okay with limiting their potential to avoid future trouble, I don't think a Cell/Buu/Black-Star-Dragon-Balls-level crisis will go well for anyone. As our family is fighting for their lives though, at least we have the comfort that didn't break our promise to a ten year old right?

And just in case that was too subtle about my feeling on the subject, let me go ahead and be even more blunt: if Maya had ever endangered the masquerade, I would have voted to rat her out in an instant. It's one thing when we're doing what we did, teaching an up and coming ki adept more about ki in a simple and non-threatening way. It's another thing entirely when it threatens to destroy pretty much our whole society and everything our people have worked on. And if you consider the masquerade as a secret, then you could also argue that when we we're upholding the masquerade, we're keeping the secrets of our entire race. But I guess in the balance you're probably right: keeping the non-life-threatening secret for one friend we've known for a couple of years is totally more important than the secrets (and possibly existence) of our family, clan, and entire race. /Sarcasm

But we're not sorry about it? We did nothing wrong. I guess we could lie but that would be being manipulative.

Okay, I'll admit that maybe I reached too far on this one. It's just that out of the last what, 6 chapters, we've tried to get Maya to come to dad what, 3 times? (Though with all the back and forth in the chat it feels like a million times.) So maybe it was a stretch, but it seems to me like Kakara really did want to tell her dad, deep down inside. Kakara strikes me, just from how she's been written so far, as someone who can lie if she has to (see: our traitorous conspiracy vis a the sealing) but doesn't really enjoy lying to her father. Put all together, it seems to me that while she wouldn't regret keeping her word to Maya not to reveal her secret, she would at least be sorry that keeping her word required her to lie to her dad.

But again, I do have a tendency to project on these characters a bit.

Okay, so what do we want to achieve with this write-in?
  • We want to inform Dad of Maya's ability to use ki
  • We want a good explanation for why we didn't tell him six months ago
  • We want a really good explanation for why we trained her for six whole months without telling him
  • We want to explain how she'd already seen we could use ki, and we took steps to prevent any damage to the Masquerade spreading
  • We want to make the point that we were only keeping it a secret because we were sure she'd let us tell him eventually, if only because she can only get so strong without him finding out
Anything else?

The safety of everyone on the planet outweighs keeping a secret because someone feels uncomfortable about letting people know something-

Ah, :ninja:'d.

Honestly I think we should go something like this.

"Hey dad I'm sorry I needed to keep this a secret, but I didn't want to rush this. ANYWAY, one of my friends from school is some kind of human mutant super Ki user who could probably become a threat comparable to Freeza in a couple of years who I've been teaching KI too to make sure she didn't try something dumb.... like blow up a mountain cause her parents started treating badly for not being like the others. Yeah... DON'T BE AN ASS."

YES! YOU ARE BEING CONSTRUCTIVE AND DISCUSSING GOALS BEFORE VOTING! I LOVE IT!

Sincé some are concerned about Kakara lying, perhaps we should admit that a big part of it was sentimentality. However, we should totally give an explanation involving practicality and poilitics to show that we did consider all angles before deciding (those were the main reasons I voted what I did so it is true). I can handle making one for the second but I have very Little time today and I am not good with feeling so can someone handle the first part? I will be working on a reasoning and we can later add whatever has been discussed and transform it to voting format.

Important points to note for our explanation:
  • She learnt to use ki by herself - she thought she had "superpowers" - and figured out I had them too. I couldn't not do training (or something else superpower-related) with her
  • She's kept these hidden ever since she got them, so I didn't see her as posing a threat to the Masquerade.
  • She'd reached a power level of nearly 1000 by herself, with no real training, and in the last six months has reached a power level of >70,000 - she's really talented.
  • We were really sure she was eventually going to say we could tell you - if nothing else, we said you could "sense" stronger ki users, and would notice her.
  • We haven't mentioned any other ki-users besides the two of us (Berra and Kakara).
  • Emphasise that not only did we make sure she wouldn't tell anyone else, but that if it even looked like she might we'd have told Dad anyway.

So for the sentimental part - which I think we should explain after the more important parts, as an "and also..." something along the lines of:
"And also... she's my friend. She's incredibly shy, she suddenly opened up and told me her life story, but panicked when I started talking about how we should tell you, and made me promise to keep it a secret until she'd decided for herself one way or the other whether to tell you... and it was such a huge show of faith, I just couldn't say no."

Seeing as how I'm about to go to sleep, I figured I'd go ahead and create a vote before I did... get my voice out there, as it were, since I'm not sure when I'll get back to this thread. Therefore:

[X] Plan Apologize
- [X] "Dad, we need to talk."
- [X] "You've always raised me to keep my promises, right?"
- [X] "I made a promise to a friend to keep a secret, and I kept my word- even though I probably should have told you. I'm sorry."
- [X] "Dad, I met a human who is a ki prodigy, just like me. Only she thought they were 'super powers'."
- [X] "She had figured out that I was a ki user too, and approached me to tell me that she was one as well."
- [X] "She only knows about ki, though. She has no idea about the masquerade or anything else, I swear."
- [X] "I wanted to tell you, but at the time she was so scared of anybody finding out that she asked me to promise not to tell anyone."
- [X] "I did... she was just so scared that I couldn't say no."
- [X] "She asked me for help with her training, and I figured it would be better for me to help her than to just let her stumble around on her own and maybe get discovered."
- [X] "So I've been training her and also trying to get her to open up to the idea of letting someone else know."
- [X] "I didn't like lying to you, but I made a promise to one of my best friends and I couldn't bread that promise. I just couldn't!"
- [X] "But she finally said it was okay to tell you. I convinced her you wouldn't be cruel to her like the regular Garenhulder adults."
- [X] "I just want you to know that if she had ever threatened the masquerade in any way, I would have told you in a heartbeat, promise or no promise. I know that that is something way too important to mess around with."
- [X] "Dad, it's Maya, my friend from school."
- [X] "I'm sorry I couldn't tell you sooner."

Of course, this is just the basic preliminary bit. I'll prolly come back and fix it up later, assuming the vote isn't over before I get back.
