[X] No. Just let him live and kick him off of Namek. This should have been lesson enough.

We came here to test the combat system, so let's let him power up and give us a real fight. I'd also be down to see what happens if we try to kick him off the planet without killing him (spoiler: probably still a fight with slightly different initial conditions, given how mercy went in canon), though that seems unlikely to take the vote.

@PoptartProdigy
Given that this is supposed to demonstrate the mechanics, could you
A) Give a breakdown to the rolls (dice result with labeled bonuses)
B) Not put them in invisitext? I think hiding the rolls is bad in general, but for this it is highly counterproductive.

They're not in the threadmarks, but our illustrious author did in fact do the breakdown of the rolls. Starts about the fourth post down on page 1289.

Actually, that's fair. I'm doing detailed breakdowns away from the threadmarks, but given the purpose, I should threadmark those as well. I'm a bit short on time right now, but I'll get to it later today.

While we're past the point of all the drama, I did have one last point to make; which is could you imagine trying to play D&D 5e when only the DM can see the players handbook? It's not relevant anymore because the rules are on the front page, but still. Think about it.

[x] No. Kill him now, and end this.

He killed Krillin and hasn't promised us pizza. Let's put him in the freezer, for good!

Awww, come on, guys. He's dead already, this is just to see the combat mechanics. You aren't avenging anyone, just ending the demo early.

Rolling.

70 70

Mechanics Showcase: Rolling 5
Adding Goku's Willpower score of +39, we have a pass. Against the DC of 95, Goku scores a 109.

What this means for the series is that while we began with a decidedly canon route to the fight, we've graduated to the whole thing ending in a few seconds as Goku executes Freeza in cold blood. No dead Namek, no 100% power, no muss, and no fuss.

And no Instant Transmission, either, since Goku can just go straight home with the others. This'll be interesting. :D

...We voted to end the tutorial showcase of how our game mechanics work early.

With a split vote.

I feel like this is kind of an own-goal.

:(

Truly, this is the Darkest Timeline. Well, not the darkest. Like... 30% Dark? Yeah, that seems about right.

In all seriousness, IT has a few pretty crucial moments later on down the line. I'm actually pretty curious about how this divergence affects the later fights, especially since it also comes with changes such as Goku learning to deny his impulses if the threat is great enough, mecha-Freeza and Cold's Earth visit never having a chance to be a thing, and him being back on Earth rather than in space for a year.

Mechanics Showcase: Nightmare To You
[x] No. Kill him now, and end this.

Nightmare To You
Freeza rolls onto his back. "I can't die like this," he sobs. "Give me a chance, please, give me a chance!"

As you look down at the tyrant, you can't bring yourself to feel anything but contempt. "You've murdered more people than I can count, and now you want mercy?" you ask. "You killed my best friend! You've killed so many people! And you don't regret a thing."

"No!" he gasps. "I do! I regret it all, I'm sorry, just please don't kill me!"

You snarl. "Shut up! Don't lie to me now and expect me to believe a word you say! You're just the same as you always were! Selfish, cruel, and-"

You stop, mid-word, and your eyes widen.

Freeza shrinks back. "Please...please, Super Saiyan, spare me..."

"...you're never going to change," you whisper. "You're just going to go back to killing and conquering. And maybe I won't be able to stop you. Maybe next time, you'll kill me." You look down. "And then what? You'll just keep going, and it'll be my friends that suffer. My family!"

Your mind flashes back to Earth, after your fight with Vegeta. You remember your breezy confidence; your utter certainty that no matter how much Vegeta improved, you'd be able to stop him next time. You didn't even consider the damage he might do. Just Nappa killed Tenshinhan, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo. Yamcha died to a Saibaman! All because you weren't there to protect them. And you didn't even consider it. You were just thinking about the next fight.

Krillin has already died twice. What happens when next time, there isn't another set of Dragon Balls out there that can bring him back? He'll just be...

...gone.

You look down at Freeza again. "It's just like Vegeta told you, Freeza," you say.

The tyrant cringes backwards. "No...no!"

"I am Son Goku, the Super Saiyan," you say, lifting your hand and leveling it on your enemy's face. "Ally to good." You palm a ki blast. "Nightmare to you."

In the light of the blast, Freeza struggles to move, trying to get away. "No! No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-!"

SKREE-

splat

Thus ends the legend of the tyrant, Freeza. Executed in the mud, screaming for his life. Now arises a new legend: Son Goku, the Super Saiyan.

Trait Lost! Born Hero [Foundational].

Trait Gained! Nightmare To You [Foundational]: In the light of your first transformation, you came to a realization about yourself, and now have vowed to never again be so reckless with the lives of your friends and family. Heavy vote weighting in favor of actions to protect them. Heavy bonuses to actions in pursuit of defending what you call yours. Automatically pass willpower checks forced by, "Spirited Competitor," when fighting opponents who pose a threat to your friends and family.

NO VOTING.

I may return to this little AU, in time. It's not, to be clear, canon to AtE, but it's an entertaining train of thought to pursue, nevertheless.

And now, folks, we return to the regular course of the quest.
