[X] Mind Games: When the team is in place, Russ will attempt to goad Horvath himself into simply taking the information he needs from Russ' mind. Will require an opposed Intrigue check. On a success, Russ will be able to lock down Horvath's personal attention for a round using his own surprise mental combat skills, possibly even two rounds if things go well. The effectiveness of removing Horvath from the board early can't be overstated. However, there is also a moderate chance Russ could sustain temporary psychic injury just trying to hold down an Archmage.

Take one for America, Agent Russ!

[X] Key Check: With Monogram's help, Russ will use the Ji Talisman to activate his keyfob and bring his Spycycle to the fight as soon as possible. Its autonomous arrival will be loud and distracting if timed to the moment his team arrives, and is subtle enough it will almost certainly work. It will also let you use the Spycycle bonus immediately, assuming your allies get you out of your cage. However, this will have less effect than fully removing a target and, in the event of a critical failure, would reveal your Ji Talisman to the enemy too soon.

Do we want to massively injure Russ again?

well you might call it massive injuries, I call it valuable insights into how to better build mental defences to prevent evil Archmages from giving brain haemorrhages by looking at you funny

[X] Defenestration is Always In: When the chaos starts, Russ will use the Ji talisman to hurl one of Horvath's underlings through a window. This has a high chance of removing the target from combat for a round, but won't accomplish much unless your allies can make use of that breathing room. It will also destroy an extra stained glass window.

Taking the unpopular option, but I will say I don't like mind games. Feels WAY too risky giving Russ another injury.

Please take this seriously.

Defenestration is funny I wanna do it!

I will remind everyone: While Russ certainly has the numbers fo beat Horvath on an Intrigue check, in Occult (the stat likely to be used for a mind battle), he is...Quite outmatched. He has an Occult of 19, and he can't even Just A Dream at the moment, so that's a 19 against a 38. I do not like those odds.

the potential consequences are serious and fair enough I'm joking about them but please don't think I'm not considering them
maybe I'm callous, but it seems worth it, partially because I think we're going to have a hard time pulling off a win anyhow. sure if the action fails we're in a worse spot than before but either a partial or full victory should offset other issues, like a risk of taking an injury getting out while we're disadvantaged.

while it would suck to fail it, I'm fine taking a gamble that's weighted in our favour. as in, benefit of wining mind games-chance of losing it>benefit of winning key check-chance of losing it>benefit of defenestration (from eyeballing it, at least)

one way of phrasing the issue might be "when you're in a bad spot you need big gambles for a chance at winning, when you're winning you can afford to take less risks since even if you don't you'll win anyhow"
not pulling as much as we can off can hurt us big time when we need to make up for it. so take a risk now so things are less risky later or because the other options aren't strong enough, maybe? if we lose we're in a bad spot, but the cost seems like it can be paid...

yeah that sucks, but Russ might have some situational buffs at least, such as from the ji talisman/pre-existing mental defences? even with things going poorly in the dreamlands last time, fairly sure we're playing to agent Russ's strengths here and even with being in a higher magical weight class Horvath may be less experienced here if he's had to do a wide range of different things to get where he is.

generally speaking I'm of the impression that getting Horvath into Russ's mind is better than leaving him to cause problems out of it, if he's going to cause problems regardless the risk of harm is less bad than it seems?

The Ji Talisman is for telekinesis, not telepathy. He has mental defenses, yes, but he's still fairly low in Occult. He could almost certainly win the initial Intrigue check (Russ has AMAZING Intrigue and Horvath's is 15 points lower), but i'm concerned about the aftermath. Taking out Horvath for a round is certainly useful, but Russ has taken a lot of injuries tonight, and i'm not sure i'm willing to take that risk.

I will note, we werent told that trapping him will take an Occult roll, just an Intrigue.

I am assuming that Russ will be using his Intrigue to trap him and hide information from Horvath, while Horvath will be rolling Occult against it once he is Inside to find said information, with how that second roll goes changing how it will happen.

This is an awful idea, but I feel like the other options don't take enough risks to let us win...

Right, i'm assuming the roll to lure him in is Intrigue, at least. I'll note, if Horvath is rolling Occult against Russ' Intrigue, then they're actually on...Literally equal footing. Horvath's Occult is 38, same as Russ' Intrigue. (and Doof's Learning. Not relevant, just intersting).

I'm going to be honest, I think Horvath has decent odds of pulping someone with his Occult score no matter what, so I'd say at the very least making him go single target for a turn is a neutral at worst, with good odds of outright taking away from the field for a round or two. If Abigail is even a round late that's great, we just gotta fight the morally dubious thief who once threatened the seas, and Blackbeard. But fighting them and Abigail is fine too.

I disagree with your point (for one, Balthazar actually has a higher Occult...By one point total, granted, but still), but nice British jab.

Our highest modifier is a 27+39=66 (And even then, that requires Russ have the Spycycle, as its a 64 if we need to use Kitsune) vs Horvath+Abigails 67. Blackbeard+Horvath meanwhile rolls a +74, a full 10 higher then Kitsune+Blake. Coincidently, the Redcoat has a bonus of 76 after the Blackbeard Modifier of +18 to his base 20.

We remove Horvath, and the bonus goes to 36+29= 65 vs the 64 from Kitsune and Blake at all times. This will ideally give us enough time to remove Chaucer and Blackbeard from the fight; but even just removing Abigail also works as Horvath would be stuck with Chauncer's +20 to assist him, as Blackbeards Ghost can not apply to rolls he or Chaucer are not making.

Yeah, this is a major reason I voted for the defenestration. The Spycyle's great, but it's too little bang for the buck. But attacking Horvath directly feels too risky, so...Middle-ground it is.
