For those concerned about forging bonds with Xanatos: Becoming a piece is a step away from genuine friendship with him. It's accepting a purely professional mentor/mentee relationship. Friends need to be equals. There needs to be respect of each other. And telling him "Thanks, but no thanks. I'll figure it out on my own.", resisting his manipulation (and in doing so — proving that his mentorship truly isn't something Doof needs), is a necessary step on that path.
