Doofenshmirtz is playing jenga, blindfolded, convinced he's actually playing charades, while three other people frantically try and pick up the pieces behind him.

But regardless, he still gets to sit at the table and play Jenga with everybody else, because he paid the entrance fee and he somehow hasn't got in the way of anyone else's turns.
I feel like this also describes what we are in the is quest, since we're playing as Doof most of the time.

It's interesting that Jenga is used as the metaphor for the Great Game, here.

See, Jenga is a game that is built for the express purpose of everything eventually falling over. That is, in fact, the point. There is no winner when people play Jenga; only a loser.

For as much as Doofenschmirtz is deluded, and not playing the game he thinks he is, the fact of the matter remains: whether they realize it or not, the other Kings are only playing for the great, grand prize of ... not being the loser.

We're the only one playing to win.
Bill's the dude who comes in late to the party and knocks over the Jenga tower on purpose before burning the house down.

And the best part is they think we're the shortsighted ones.

Xanatos is trying to teach us addition when we're already doing calculus.

Most likely by rebuilding the tower then making our rivals collapse it... kind of sounds like collapsing masquerades is inevitable if you put it like that.

I encourage you to consider what a complete balkanization of the largest superpower on earth would mean, who you are surrounded by, and how things go for medium sized nations in the middle of a large plain when open warfare breaks out. Especially ones that can't achieve autarky because, you know, two and a half states.

Alright, this is one of my few gripes with this Quest, actually.

You, Made in Heaven, and weredrago have made a Quest in which we play as Doctor Heinz Doofenschmirtz.

But every time we try and play like Doctor Doofenschmirtz, we're told it's a bad idea. We are, on some occasions, mocked for trying to do so, as in the case of a few posts above, implying that Doofenschmirtz is perfect for SV because he is deluded, stubborn, and brimming with self-importance.

It doesn't feel good to be told you're being dumb for wanting to play as Doofenschmirtz, in a game about being Doofenscmirtz. Actually, it never feels good when a DM tells you that your desired playstyle is delusional!

If we are really are setting ourselves up for failure, please - let us fail on our own terms, or at least stop insulting us about it.

I wanna have fun. Please let us have fun.

Standard, non-mad scientists
Hey, Some of our Scientists are Equally Mad, or at least Differently Sane.
You declared you wanted to take some supervillains out of jail. The wardens were very worried to discover you were remitting them into the care of... a licensed therapist. Who then followed protocol to the letter before recommending them for parole and maybe, quietly, greasing the gears a bit. And so. Uneasy equilibrium.
We did also build some of those prisons, like the special containment for toons we made, when we started getting big on toons.

You're playing as Doofenshmirtz as assisted by a very large group of people. There is room to be wacky and fun and Doofy without also bluntly denying the reality of the setting. We specifically set it up for there to be room to be wacky and fun and Doofy without bluntly denying the reality of the setting.

It begins to grate when I admit defeat in managing to describe the basic facts of the setting in-story, resort to explaining those facts OOC so that people don't end up making choices with incomplete information and have disastrous consequences that will probably drive a lot of people away, and then the immediate response is 'I take that as a challenge.' There is nothing more frustrating to a QM than the phrase 'I take that as a challenge', because it means in some way I have failed.

Who's denying the reality of the setting?!

Doofenschmirtz and his delusions are part of the setting.
*Raises a pika paw.

What are you guys talking about.

We're literally doing anything we want to do up until flying a car to New York with basically no consequences while ignoring all the laws ever made whenever we do anything . Literally everyone other then doof points out that Doof is just technically obscenely influential while Doof himself considers himself to be the ruler of 2 1/2 states area and both sides are mostly right.

There were no consequences that Doof observed to this action.
Potato potato.

We have likely an army of people whose entire jobs is to make sure that the technicalities are dealt with and the laws that are broken are subsequently swept under the rug.

As far as we're concerned the vasttttttttttttttt majority of stuff that would get other people arrested we can safely ignore with minimal consequences.

I think that's a pretty good example of how we let Doofy stuff happen all the time and don't penalize specifically for that. Heck, that wasn't even a thing you guys voted to do, it's just something we had happen because it felt right for Doofenshmirtz.

In fact I object to very little about the actual votes people have made so far. You usually strike a good balance between playing to type and being practical. My concern is when I see people saying things about the setting, OOC, that just aren't true, that we intended for you to know were not true, and could get you guys in serious hot water if you, OOC, go into the votes thinking it is true.

I apologize if "Jesus Christ, Doofenshmirtz is the most perfect SV self-insert ever conceived of." was insulting. It's a joke that was started by someone else in the thread and that I like using because I find it really funny. I can delete it if people want.

I didn't take it as an insult, it's right.

I believe what he's saying is that we can be Doof without playing like a dumbass.

Yeah, and he's right. The thing, though, is - we haven't been???

Just like Evilevi, the person with the cutest avatar I've ever seen, said: we've been doing plenty of Doofenschmirtz stuff without blowing the lid off of everything. That is the game plan going forwards.

But every time we talk about long term, or we speak up about maybe-possibly-someday doing more than sort-of-sort-of-not ruling the Tri State area, every time we talk about moving in the direction of solidifyinng our power, making it hard power instead of soft power as opportunities rise, we're told repeatedly:

"No. You can't do that. Trying to do that is stupid, and suicidal."

As though by trying to do any of that, we are fully committing to doing all of it. As though by applying a firmer hand to the Tri-State area we are inviting in total and complete balkanization of the US. We aren't even allowed to bring up the idea of doing it as a joke, see: Challenge Accepted, above.

I don't understand why we're being pounded over the head with all this, over and over and over again, when we haven't done anything wrong, yet. We're keeping a lid on the masquerades, we're playing within the bounds of the rules of the game, both in-universe and out, and nobody's denying the setting in any way, shape, or form.

In other words:

I have repeatedly been told i am not allowed to play the Quest the way I want to because I pronounce the word "potato" differently than the GMs do.

You're allowed to do whatever you want. But we're also going to tell you what the actual, genuine state of the game world is. You're not just playing Doofenshmirtz, you're playing Doofenshmirtz in a Shadowrun-style setting. That was part of the package too. We don't keep pounding in that 'become an actual monarch and take over the world!' is going to be a hard sell because people have said 'I recognize how difficult the setting makes this and I am aware of the risks, and I choose to move forward with this plan anyways.'

We keep pounding in that 'become an actual monarch and take over the world!' is going to be a hard sell because, based on the way we see people talking about it, it feels like people do not understand how hard of a sell it is. And we want you to understand that, going in.

Not the world, what would we do with an entire world? It's too much, a Tri-State area, plus some other potential parcels of land here and there, in a world where everything isn't a paradox ridden hellscape, is enough for me.
