So, since we are eating and this is has basically turned into Evangelion General thread, I'm going to talk about something I've been researching for my own fics.
The Children's psychological make up and the conditions there in that they suffer from.
Do note I'm using the series and not
@Strypgia'a fic as a basis for this analysis, he's taken the more sympathetic outlook of the various characters. (or perhaps they simply never got the chance to get worse.)
Shinji is the simplest; at the start of the he is prone to depressive episodes and has a degree of Social Aversion Disorder, though not as large as has the memes has led a lot of people to believe. He can be quite social once he gets over the initial bump and he even stands up to Asuka fair bit once he's familiar enough, the kid finds it hard to make first contact but one he's there he usually fairly decent at interacting, even if he is a bit of a pushover.
Once the series progresses, he gets worse. Shinji develops PTSD as a result of the pain and physical injuries he sustains from the war, and the death and injuries of his friends and loved ones, one of whom he has to murder, this results in a massive depressive episode that leaves him passively suicidal, he doesn't even attempt to save himself from the JSDF. There is also his sexual frustration that he develops while being near Misato and Asuka, the former being an adult woman who in the best case has absolutely no boundaries even around a teenage child and in the worst case is a closeted Hebephile who is attempting to get him to make the first move (which the really unsympathetic look at it, I'd say Misato simply never learned boundries), and the later deliberately (and clumsily) tries to entice him into sexual contact. Normally he'd just deal with this in usual manner of young teenage boys, but the pressure cooker environment and the huge amount of stress boils over into the sexual assault of his comatose friend as he losses his impulse control. Which further deepens his depression and is the main reason he's suicidal, he committed a horrific act on someone he cared about not through in action and his father's callous nature, but because he lost control of himself.
He also has an Oedipus complex, but I'd be here all day with that kettle of fish.
Asuka is the worst out of all the Children; she's got PTSD from her mother's suicide, an Electra complex that she probably developed after hearing her father's affair, a huge case of Pediophobia and most importantly, probably the most iconic example of Histronic Personality disorder in any form of media.
I'd like to make a point here; A lot of people think that Asuka has a narcissistic personality disorder, which is to say an over blown sense of self worth at its simplest. Histrionic Personality on the other hand is an excess degree of attention seeking behavior, to quote Wikipedia:
Histronic Personality Disorder said:
Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as a personality disorder characterized by a pattern of excessive attention-seeking emotions, usually beginning in early adulthood, including inappropriately seductive behavior and an excessive need for approval.
To make it simple, she cannot validate her own sense of self-worth, she needs other people to do it. She hangs off of Kaji, bugs Shinji and derides her supposed rivals ; she insults both Misato, who is a sexual rival for both Shinji and Kaji, and Rei, who competes with her for being the best EVA pilot and for Shinji, all she for the sole purpose of her reinforcing her own shoddy and crumbling sense of self-worth. It is also why she's placed almost all of her self-esteem on being the best EVA Pilot; she is not only the probably the best Pilot in terms of raw ability, if a fight between the Children were to happen and Shinji didn't have his mother I'd honestly say she'd pick the other two apart, but she got genuine praise for, and for a child who has such a huge Histrionic disorder it must have been better than crack cocaine.
And then it all started to fall apart when Shinji began to out perform her, causing her sense of worth to plummet faster than a rock, and then she was utterly violated by Ariel, who brought all of her trauma's and fears and forced her to relieve those moments. That broke her and she soon fell into a coma soon after she attempted suicide via exposure. Though whether this was because of the trauma she received from Ariel and the complete destruction of her ego, or from the physical stress of laying in frigid standing water while exposed to the elements is not known, but I'd say its probably a mixture of both.
Rei is the hardest; simply put she is not human enough for me to gauge whether she has any disorders or trauma's or if that she is just the norm for a Human/ Progenitor hybrid, but I'm going to continue anyway and presume she's mostly human psychologically speaking.
The first and most obvious thing is that she sits somewhere on the Autistic spectrum, she can be blunt and is very ignorant of social norms; she very rudely dismissed Asuka's attempt at making friends, even though if it wasn't done in good faith most people would have simply said yes to an offer of friendship from someone they knew they'd be spending a lot of time with just for sake of a civility, and Rei also let a boy she barely knew see her naked and grope her, though that was just bad luck of Shinji's part, without any complaint,
Not because she wanted him to see her naked, but because she legitimately saw no issue with a strange boy seeing her naked and touching her intimately in places that would put of a normal girl, even if she was reasonable enough to see it as an accident.
Rei also places no value on her survival, she gladly used a N2-Mine as a lance and she readily believes she can be replaced. Which is true, and that has had no small effect on her. The only social connection she has before Shinji is Ritsuko, who hates her, and Gendo, who is a broken mess of a man who sees her both as utterly expendable and as the last piece of his wife he has. And as much as we like to rag on Asuka for being aggressive and unsociable, she at least tried, Rei doesn't even do that. So she also places little value social ties, at least beyond those to the Ikari men at the start of the series.
That isn't to say she doesn't have empathy, she tries to help Asuka while she was in the middle of her breakdown with some advice on the nature of an EVA and how to connect with it, but that didn't go so well. Again she picked the wrong time and place, right after a Sync test that showed her plummeting score and in an elevator, which a enclosed space, Asuka probably felt trapped in there with the person she both hates and triggers her Pediophobia.
Well, there it is, I hope even some of you guys find it intresting.
