Author Update: I'm stressed out, depressed, and furious. My wife is unable to fly to meet me due to US Government passport nonsense. Since I cannot get anyone to notarize the one critical form after 1800 on a Friday in Vienna, that's it. My chance to see my wife and kids is sunk. The US Embassy was less than useless. actively wasting time where I could have tried something else.

So... I now have more time alone than I wanted, a bad mood, and a massive headache. And I've got an update streak to maintain... so why not? The next scene, as IRC visitors already know, is not a happy one. Why not use my bad mood to make it right?

Commencing writing. Not going to sleep until we've got an update.

Edit: ....ok, looks like I need to add a WAFFy rebuttal. :) Don't worry, everyone. Strype has a plan.

Bloody government eh? They are never helpful when you need them to be.

Writing when angry? My hat comes off to you sir, I simply cannot do that. When I'm angry, the closest thing I can do to "creative" is vent at a wall for thirty minutes straight...anyways, looking forward to the update!

Hello, my name is Shade, and I want to write a fluffy Omake for Strypgia's awesome Fanfic. (actually, I just wanted to write this, and Strypgia gave the go ahead. So...His fault~)

Keep on Dreaming on, you sweet summer child.

It was night. The sound of chirping crickets mixed with the rare car that honked its way through the streets of Neo-Tokyo.

Asuka smiled as she watched the sleeping form of Shinji by her side, gingerly playing with a lock of his hair even as her lover slept peacefully after the much enjoyable performance. It was good to be alive. It was good to be here, in this moment. It was good, and beautiful, and she would fight anyone who dared to take it away.

"Oh...is that so?" a voice spoke, and the voice was calm, it was tranquil, it was a shadow against the corner of the room, a shadow of smoke and ashes, a shadow of crimson eyes and long, dirty hair. "You would fight anyone?" the voice mocked her, the tone childish as the eyes stared right at her like daggers, her body paralyzed from sheer fear, no words leaving her mouth. "You would fight, uh? So...like you fought to get mommy down from the ceiling?" the voice spoke and mocked her, taking her time to savor her fear.

Asuka could not speak, even as the smoke trailed across the floor, a tiny flame flickering to life in the spot where the crimson eyes stood. "Tell me how much you fought, Asuka dear. How much you cried? How much you cried we all know. How much you hurt? We know that too. But if you think you can fight...think again," the figure began to move, slithering more than walking, across the tatami mats. Her eyes followed her, even as her body remained transfixed on the flames that began to burn the corner of the room, jumping right and left like tiny devilish Reis.

A whisper reached her ear, smoky lips touching her earlobe like the tender caress of a seductive demon, but with the aftertaste of ash, of cigarette burns, of disgusting, nauseating medicines. "Your father fucked the nurse in the next room and you heard it all~" the voice whispered, a smoking hand grabbing her shoulder, "Your father loved your mother so much~" the voice hummed and sang, "And then...he left her when she could no longer work properly. When she could no longer talk properly. When she could no longer fuck properly," the voice spoke angrily. "Tell me, little, precious, Asuka. Tell me...do you really believe this story will have a fairy tale ending?"

The fires kept burning. "It is when our hearts are the warmest, that they bleed the most," the voice of smoke and ashes spoke. "You think this is a dream?" the voice laughed, cruelly engulfing her in a tornado of ashes that ripped down her throat and nostrils, making her cry from the pain. "Is this pain not real!? What is it then!? Do you think you are safe? Do you think you will ever be safe? Your love...is but an illusion!" the voice laughed as the smoke dissipated to the remains of a charred room, a lonely doll hanging from the wooden ceiling by a burnt piece of rope.

"W-What do you want?" Asuka grunted out. "W-Who are you!?" she snapped towards the figure.

"Oh, Asuka-chan," the figure said with a click of his tongue. "I..." the ponytails, the dress, the summer heat-it all came back, did it not? Mama-Mama-the pathetic whimpering remains of what was nothing more than a husk of a mother, the smell of smoke in the other room, the cries- "Am an Angel." The Asuka in front of her smiled brightly, her eyes crimson red. "You know, you humans think you are so, so smart, you think you can have everything, fight against everything-" he shook his head, this creature of smoke and crimson eyes. "But...you can't. There are mountains that can never be dug. There are walls that can never be breached. Futilely trying to break through them..."

The creature shook his head. "You can't. Want to know the funny thing?"

He waved a hand, and all was darkness.

"You're in a coma, Asuka. How does it feel!?" the creature spoke with bubbling laughter. Even as the darkness that claimed her was all encompassing.

When will she wake up? This was Shinji's voice. Her Shinji's voice-

We don't know yet-

Will she wake up?

We can't say-

She won't wake up.

"This is a lie!" Asuka yelled, flailing her arms in the darkness. "This is just a lie! Shinji loves me! He loves me because-"

"He would love a rock if a rock had a pair of arms and legs and a hole to dig in!" the monster of shadows roared with enough fury to make Asuka whimper. "He would love a beggar if it told him how good he was. He would love and gleefully stick by his father if he only told him what good work he is doing for him!" the figure hissed and snarled, "He does not love you. He does not care. You were simply the first to grab his hand. This does not mean he loves you...it simply means he's grateful to you." The figure smiled, and extended both arms of willowy smoke.

Asuka...I'm sorry. You didn't come back. The voice was Shinji's, but it was older.

Asuka-It's me...Rei. I'm sorry. There was nothing we could do. I...I will keep him happy in your place.

The voice laughed. The figure of smoke laughed and grinned and belatedly, Asuka realized that he truly loved this. This misery, this agony-the pain that lashed out in her chest were to him delight and pleasure.

"You! That's-I don't believe this! I don't believe any of this! Shinji will rescue me!" Asuka yelled, "And-And Rei too! And...Rei loves us! And We love her! And...and if it's not a lie, then...then I'm happy for-"

"Liar!" the figure's eyes were an inch away from hers, teeth of sharp white splendor snapping curtly in front of her. Asuka screamed and fell backwards, falling down and down a black hole that seemed to have no end as the figure of smoke and sharp fangs flew around her like a curtain of smoke. "You don't want to share him, you don't want to hand him over-you want him all for you! That's what you are, you filthy liar! A needy girl who needs someone to love, otherwise she has no meaning! This girl-This girl has no meaning if she does not love someone!" the Angel laughed and twirled his smoky body a bit more before coming to an abrupt halt as Asuka's back hit the ground.

Asuka...this is Asuka. We...we decided to name her after you-we...

"They are guilty of leaving you behind," the voice spoke softly, enraptured by those words that came in the darkness of the room. "How does it feel? Uhm? You, human, tell me...how does it feel? An Angel such as myself-these things..." he laughed. "Oh, how cute, you are hiding your eyes away from the truth with your arm, crying tears-how very much humane of you," Asuka's eyes burned as she pressed her forearm tightly against her eyes.

"How long are you going to ignore the truth in front of your eyes, uh?" the figure whispered.

Asuka...

"How long are you going to believe in happy endings for the likes of you!?" the figure snarled.

Asuka!

"In the end, you will be abandoned! Just like your mother was! Just you wait and see!"

Asuka wake up!

"So enjoy your happiness," the figure said with a bright smile, the teeth sharp, coiled scales shining of darkness and smokes, "for in the end...even love dies when it hangs himself up..." the figure laughed at his joke. He laughed...and laughed...and laughed.

Asuka! Please! Wake up!

"Bye bye, Asuka-chan, see you next time you go to sleep," the figure said with a bright smile, as her eyes snapped open to Shinji's worried face, to his harsh breathing, to his hands shaking her awake. She stopped flailing around, her eyes on every corner of the room, her thoughts in disarray.

"The nightmares..." Asuka mumbled, "They were supposed to be...gone..." she whimpered and croaked, even as her body pressed against that of Shinji, his arms around hers.

"I'm right here, Asuka..." Shinji whispered gently, rocking her with a lullaby that made her sleepy, that made her reminisce of times long gone of happiness and bedtime stories-of-...

"How do you know that lullaby?" she whispered, her eyes rising up to stare into the glass ones of her deceased mother's rotting corpse.

"Don't you remember my song, Asuka!?" the corpse shrieked as thundering maggots left the rotten mouth, and Asuka screamed in turn, fighting for her dear life as she pushed the monster away and cried, cried, and then crawled into a corner clutching on to her legs and whimpering.

"It's not real!" she screamed to herself. "It's not real!"

"We have all the time in the world to make you forget about that tiny detail, Asuka dear," the voice of smoke and crimson eyes spoke, and with it, the nightmare began anew.

For he was Bardiel, the Angel of the Haze, and within his purpose...

There was only laughter.

*Elsewhere*

"Asuka!" Shinji screamed, "Asuka, please fight this!"

"Activate the Dummy System," Gendo spoke firmly.

Then all was blood and fury, pain and misery.

And but a few hours later, Gendo Ikari's neck was somewhat snapped...

Hm. Yes, actually, despite my counter-arguments I think that would work. Passing a hot potato on to NERV. Of course, that then raises the question why SEELE hasn't done so earlier already?

My best guess is, since both Gendo and SEELE need the last Angel dead before they can initiate 3I, holding onto Kaworu delays Gendo's plans until SEELE's preparations are already complete.

Well, that emergency plan was only decided when NERV conveniently "lost" (ehem) the Spear, at which point EVA-01 already has the S2. It's possible that is required, yes.

...which in turn makes me wonder why EVA-01 getting that organ was part of Gendo's plan, while SEELE protested. What did Gendo get out of it? His 3I scenario involved Rei, Adam's foetus and Lilith's body. Unit-01 wasn't required, and he knew SEELE's 3I plans were EVA-based - that this in fact (not angel fights) were the primary reason EVAs had been created. So surely, a powered up EVA will only help SEELE while he doesn't need it. So why was this part of his plan?

Perhaps Gendo expected an EVA without normal limits to be useful for fighting off SEELE's inevitable assault on Tokyo-3?

Well, if humanity is really an "evolutionary dead-end" this implies there is some evolutionary barrier to cross, and humanity can't. So the end point of starting all over might in fact not be something like humanity, but something that does in fact transcend humanity. Especially if SEELE is guiding the process as sorta-gods.

Remember the final conversation between Gendo and SEELE in EoE. Gendo insists that death creates nothing (and it shows quite something about how bad SEELE is when Gendo appears as the idealistic hero). SEELE's scenario is not just a continuation of humanity. That is Gendo's scenario, human complementation. SEELE's scenario is indeed death.

On the other hand, when SEELE was getting tanged in the Impact that did occur, they didn't exactly seem pissed about it.

The "Classified Information" from the NGE 2 game suggests a SEELE 3I scenario (which, granted, seems to contradict the series and EOE as everyone understands them) where SEELE seeks Complementation of the inner circle only within the body of an S2 equipped EVA unit, followed by destruction of the Lance of Longinus so that the ascended form could no longer be destroyed. The rest of humanity's souls would effectively be lost as a sacrifice to enable the inner circle's ascension.

Something which they seem to be deeply opposed to, though, going by their protests after EVA-01 ate Zeruel's S2 organ.

Good point, although if their 3I plan does involve combining both Fruits, they could rather be referring to the creation of a godlike being separate from what they want to turn mankind into -- a potential rival for divinity. They mean for man to become god, not create one.

Hah. But yeah, I don't think so. Again, what makes him special is Adam's soul, whereas EVAs are Adam's flesh. EVA production doesn't need Kaworu and I can't see where he would be helpful. Even if Kaworu could help in getting angel souls into EVAs, he couldn't help with the actually expensive and time consuming part, the construction.

Though the idea of angel souls in the MP EVAs... now that I find intriguing. It would explain much about their behaviour, and also why the Kaworu dummy plug can "pilot" them...

Remember that in Eva, it appears that soul (and associated AT field) + LCL = organism, at least while the organism is alive (after all, slaughtering a chicken results in a bucket of KFC, not a bucket of LCL); consider Shinji absorbed into Unit-01, or the tanging and potential reconstitution of humanity in 3I. Presumably Adamite Angels function similarly, but with a different constituent liquid (one made of particle-wave matter?). I was wondering about the possibility of bypassing physical construction of an EVA by directly forming one out of the Adamite-equivalent to LCL (ACL?) through introduction of a soul drawn from Adam's Room of Guf. (Other than the mechanical parts -- build those conventionally, submerge them in working fluid, form EVA around the mechanical parts via soul voodoo?) The trick would be figuring out how to make the process result in an Evangelion, rather than an angel. Talk about "experiencing technical difficulties" if they screwed that up...

"First rule of SEELE: if you see Kaworu running, run faster."

Heh, now there's an idea: Jet Alone (or T-RIDEN-T) with the fake spears. Suddenly, they are not useless anymore due to being unable to overcome AT Fields. All you need is any kind of giant humanoid robot which can hold those spears.
Hmmm... I like T-RIDEN-T's flight capability, but that arm structure just doesn't look suitable for an overhand throw of the replica spears. Or throwing at all, really -- you'd be forced to use it as a thrusting spear, although the T-RIDEN-T being airborne would allow it to get into stabby range easily. Jet Alone seems better for throwing it.

Or... combine the two abilities: a next-generation Jet Alone that uses its reactor as the core of a nuclear-thermal propulsion system -- jet engines that get their heat from a nuclear reactor, rather than burning jet fuel. Experiments and research have been done real-world into building this sort of engine, but AFAIK no aircraft has actually flown powered by such a system.

That would require a 180 of her character. Rei very desperately wants to be in the middle of that sandwich (with Asuka and Shinji also taking turns in the middle) but doesn't because she fears that any interruption will ruin it.

If she was assured she wouldn't ruin it, it would take flushing the Reiquarium and then killing her to stop her.

And now I'm remembering the very brief omake of Rei going drink for drink with Misato and then pulling out a pistol to "avoid" the hangover.

Omake: What Dreams May Come

Asuka jolted awake again. Nightmares. Again. Damn Misato's little prohibition. The creepy thing of shadow and fire that mocked her again, this time.

She shivered. It scared her because it had just enough sting to hit deep. Shinji loved her, sure... but was that just because she'd gotten to him first, gotten him to bed first? She was all too aware of the literature that said 'young men often become enamored of their first sexual partner, no matter the appropriateness'. Was she just... the one he'd grow tired of?

'You're just like me.'

Her heartbeat slowed, and a small smile spread on her face. No... she wasn't just 'the first one'. Even Rei didn't have the same past, the same fears. For as much as they both could admit they both loved Rei now, it... wasn't the same. If... if he had this kind of grip on her heart, then she had to have the same on his, right?

Right...?

She pulled the blankets closer and huddled. She couldn't get to sleep next to him again soon enough. Sleep in the now evaded her, though. That... thing's words kept haunting her.

She sighed and sat up. Time for emergency measures. She rose from her bed and padded over to her wardrobe. Deep in the back, behind two layers of 'winter' jackets she probably would never wear in Japan, was a secret. One even Shinji didn't know about. Not that she wouldn't tell him, it was just embarrassing. In fact, she would tell him tomorrow, when she told him about the rest of this.

She settled back into bed with her prize, and let the fact that she could tell him chase the last of the shadows of that dream away. She pressed her little hidden treasure to her face, and took a deep breath. The world got a little better.

'He never even said a word about one of his sleep-shirts going 'missing',' she thought. 'He does the laundry, he has to know it's missing.'

His scent... she couldn't have him next to her right now, but she could still fall asleep with his smell there. Maybe that would extend a little of its protective power. And tomorrow, she'd... she'd get to tell him. Tell him her fears and secrets and everything. He was just like her. And she wasn't leaving him for anything.

+++

Shinji's eyes bugged out and his arms wrapped tighter around her. "I... gods, Asuka, we... we should tell Misato you're having nightmares this bad. She'd have to let us-..."

"She'd have to let nothing, Shinji," Asuka rebutted. "We already told her we both have nightmares bad enough to wake up to without each other now. And she's still saying we have to wait." She nevertheless burrowed into his embrace. Just because Misato said they couldn't go to bed together and sleep, it didn't mean they couldn't spend entire afternoons when she was still at work cuddled up to each other before she came home in their bed in Asuka's room. Having to get up and get dressed before Misato came home was annoying, but the time they did steal was worth it.

"Still... this creepy thing of fire and smoke... and... you having dreams of... that?" He shivered himself.

"Not going to say anything about my having stolen one of your shirts before we got together, just to pretend I had a boyfriend's shirt to sniff at night?" Asuka queried, blushing at the revelation.

He blushed too. "Gods, I was oblivious. I thought the wind must have blown it away when I had them drying outside one day or something. The idea you were... that you thought I smelled nice would have been... If you'd told me, I'd have been sure you were teasing me."

He kissed her cheek and continued. "But... the rest. You... never waking up, and me and Rei... I... just..."

"Would you?" she asked, not even trying to hide her worry. "I'm not... judging. I just... I mean, we love Rei, but..."

"Y-you... want an honest answer, don't you?" Shinji seemed to shrink into himself a little.

Asuka just swallowed and nodded.

He was silent for a while. "...yes."

She stiffened.

"But no."

She very slowly untensed. "I... think that's good, but... explain?"

"I love Rei. She's calming, beautiful, understands what it's like to be... used and abused by my father... but she's not you. You're just like me. Rei... can't understand me like you do. If... something happened to you..." He swallowed. "A-Asuka... I'd... I'd kind of want to... I guess, take comfort with Rei, but... at the same time I wouldn't? I'd... I'd... I'm afraid I'd want to be with you that I'd be like my father."

It was Asuka's turn to hold him tight as an all too familiar note of self-loathing returned to his voice, plus the deep, snarling anger that came up any time his father was mentioned these days.

"He... he's let himself become something... horrible, and evil since Mother.. went away. Because... he can't live without her. I'm... I kind of hope I wouldn't be just the same way, but... I can kind of feel it. The idea of... not being with you scares me. Not... not just the being alone part, but... but anyone else, even Rei, is just not you. I'd... I'm afraid... I'd...just refuse to let go of you, sit next to your bed all the time, talk to you like you were awake... until people drag me away or think I've gone mad without you." He took a breath, and tried to calm his shaking. "I think I'd eventually let Rei drag me away just so they wouldn't decide I was crazy, and keep me from seeing you."

His head rose slowly until he could meet her eyes again. "How pathetic is that? That I'm... so nothing that I go crazy without you, or that I'm so like him?"

She kissed him, slow and firm. "You're not. You're not him. I know my Shinji, and you're nothing like Commander Asshole. But... I appreciate the honesty, Shinji. I..." Asuka took her own deep breath. "If something does happen, you make Rei happy, you got it?"

His eyes widened. "Asuka, no! I won't le-"

"I mean it," she cut him off with a finger to his lips. "You... that's an order. You don't turn into your dad. You make Rei happy, you name daughters after me, you do all that. Because... I know you'd be right back next to me if I ever did wake up, wouldn't you?"

He nodded, a little sheepishly. "...I love Rei. But... you're my Asuka. You're not my first. You're my only. That's... why I'm afraid I'd do that, just haunt your bedside. Or do that to Rei if you woke up, just leave her for you. I... I worry that I'm like that, sometimes, Asuka. Like I could go as crazy as my father over you, and... I hate that part of me."

She kissed him again. "'Unhealthily codependent' is us, yeah. But... we're getting better. That's why those nightmares bite, baka mine. We're both still... wounded. But I'm getting better and stronger while we're together... And one day we'll be strong enough we won't need to lean on each other like this... but we're still going to walk together anyway, because... right next to each other is where we want to be."

She grinned, and leaned forward again... to nip the tip of his nose with her teeth. "And I mean all that: You make Rei happy, and... keep my memory. Because I know you're not your father, and that you'll never forget me."

Shinji nodded... then suddenly smiled. "You're just like me. You too."

"Huh?"

"If anything happens to me, you make Rei happy, understand?"

She looked at him incredulously. "I... you... you idiot!"

"I know you and Rei couldn't have babies, but..."

Any further ideas from the Third Child were muffled as she hit him over the head with a pillow.

"Mmuuprphl mmhpphmm could figure out somemmpphmhm, mmaybe adopt a cute little boy and mmpphms him Shinji!" he got out in bursts.

His smile faded. "I mean it too, Asuka."

His more serious tone got her to stop trying to beat his head in with a pillow. "Huh?"

"If anything happens, you and Rei... be happy. That means more than... just waiting for me to never wake up. And... you won't have to worry about it, anyhow."

"How's that?"

"Nothing's going to happen to you. Any Angel that might put you in a coma or kill you is going to have to go through me first. You're not going to have to watch me sleep forever... unless it's right with you."

Asuka closed her eyes and pushed the tears back. "Sh-shut up, you i-idiot. I told you, you're not allowed to die. Not ever."

"Together, forever and always. I promised, Asuka..." He held her tight. Sleep was too easy, this way...

"Ohh...back again already, little scared girl?" the creature grinned lazily at her. The tattered parody of her bedroom was cold as it snaked it's way back and forth in front of her.

She tried to shoot back. "Y-you can't scare me. Shinji knows about you now. Knows about your lies."

It laughed. "The spineless brat who will leave you as soon as you're both in college? You think you can keep him interested? Once he learns how good having sex with someone attractive feels, he'll leave you as soon as she says she loves him."

"No, he won't!" Asuka tried. "He... he promised!"

The thing sneered, it's terrible grin stretching wide. "Words. Pretty words. How many men have said things like that before? He's just like them."

The creature's eyes widened into blazing furnaces as two feet of sword blade suddenly erupted from its chest. "Whuggglllre?!" it tried to say, but only bubbling noises emerged. Somehow, the thing of smoke and fire began to bleed.

"No," Asuka's smile was huge and triumphant. "He's just like me. And I don't like you." She looked up at the dream-image of her beloved. "Shinji.... kill."

The apparition of Shinji Ikari was oddly dressed like a knight, in shining white armor no less. "As you wish," he said, withdrawing the sword from the things back. Ichorous black blood dribbled off, becoming a streak across the walls as he snapped the blade in a short cut to whip the blood off.

"You... you're just... a stupid dream... You can't keep her heart's fears away from me..." the thing gurgled at him. "You'll never escape your doubts, stupid girl!"

Shinji's blade whirled around in a silvery crescent, cleanly beheading the thing. Before the head could fall to the floor, a second blade caught it.

Asuka pulled the head with the still moving eyes darting around to face her. "Maybe once that might have been true... but I'm not alone now. I'll never be alone again. You'll never get my heart, thing..."

Asuka's blade turned on its side, letting the head fall to the floor next to its body. Asuka raised her blade up high, and with a single thrust, pinned the head to the floor.

"Because my heart is his now. And his is mine. And neither of us will fail in that guard."

The thing's eyes stilled. Asuka gave it a kick for good measure. "Because he's just like me. And I remembered when I woke up... he and I already killed you. Together."

Tarot Shinji, and a literal White Knight to boot... interesting.

Oh, Asuka. If only you really knew. Without you, Shinji would be a wreck at this point.

"You... you're just... a stupid dream... You can't keep her heart's fears away from me..." the thing gurgled at him. "You'll never escape your doubts, stupid girl!"
So sure of that are you, abomination? For being "just a dream" Knight!Shinji wrecked you with ease.

I think Asuka has made some progress re: her fears tonight.

Great update Strypgia.

Awwws that is sweet. :)........... Something f&^king horrible is about to happen.
Yeah, it's called 'Arael'.

Yeah, when I first saw the pic, I hadn't scrolled down far enough to see it was a tarot card, and I thought, "When did Shinji get Light Hawk Wings?"

Hmmmmmmmm...This could go places. Replace Ritsuko Akagi with a much greater mad scientist...

Yep sounds about right. If Asuka is still the target I think she'll fare much better than canon. Especially with her White Knight Shinji projection. Shinji would probably pull through too. Rei, however........ That could be messy. We better get some tissues ready. I think the Bluenette is about to have a very bad day.

Rei: Life, uh, finds a way.
Rei: Commander Ikari, uh, the kind of control you're attempting simply is…it's not possible. If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, uh…well, there it is.
