Something that occurred to me while I was at work last night:

Sayaka's current crisis of confidence is our fault.

When Sayaka first contracted, we feared that she was overconfident to the point of recklessness. So we arranged a series of training exercises intended to teach her to be more cautious. But by going head-to-head with veterans like Mami, Homura and Kyouko and getting her ass kicked, instead of teaching her to be more cautious, it made her feel inadequate. Instead of learning from those losses, she's blaming herself for them.
 
I think you're all being far too subtle with the Sayaka issue.

The rest of the core team is all great at fighting and terrible at being social. Mami, because she's got trauma, Homura, because she's bitter, insular, and monofocused, and Sabrina, because she's sort of crazy and confused much of the time. Sayaka, on the other hand, is good-to-great at the social, and so far merely good at the combat.

Conveniently, Sabrina has already been throwing Sayaka at every Magical Girl social situation. Need to diplomacy Kyouko? Throw Sayaka at the problem. Meeting up with Nadia? Bring Sayaka. Checking in on the Touhou girls? Get Sayaka to come with and smooth things over.

The answer to Sayaka wanting to be useful is "don't you realize I'm shamelessly using you already, constantly? I'm building a giant coalition of magical girls, and you're the only magical girl I know and trust who can actually talk to other magical girls effectively and not have a nervous breakdown. You're irreplacable in the plan. Sorry, I thought you knew. That's why I keep asking you to meet up with magical girls I'm trying to recruit."

Simply because we have an habit of talking past the point where we made everyone exasperate.

I'm still very not sure about this vote.

What if we just give Sayaka some hugs, tell her we believe in her, you know, support. Then, later we bring up the other things?

For example, wednesday morning we tell Sayaka about our plan with Kyouko and give her the money/gold/seed so she can go to training on her own, later that day.

The cloning power practise we could bring up anytime all the group's together: We can discuss what we are all going to do about the inmigrantgucas, and ask Sayaka to get her cloning power up to speed to help with that, and with hunts.

Then we wouldn't risk overwhelming Sayaka right now.

The fight she gave us just now was one of the toughest one-on-one fights we've ever had. The only people we've faced who are better are ones who've been doing this for years. She's so good that we had to hire one of the best melee fighters in the region to have something new to teach her.

We worry about Homura, no matter how powerful she is, we worry about Kyouko... Mami's the greatest, but we worry about her the most of all. We're scared, all the time. Scared of losing the people we love. No matter how strong they are. Magical girls, no matter how strong, are all so fragile, deep down. We can't bear to lose anyone. This is the only family we've ever known.

But let me tell you something, while it may be true that we can't tell with surety how useful, how great or how well you will act until that moment comes when the chips are down and everything balances on your actions. I don't think, I don't believe you will have an issue in that moment because you took on this mantle of Puella Magi knowing about its costs, its truths and when you offered up your soul for a wish you did not wish for money, or power - you wished to help your friends. That is why I believe you are and will be 'useful' Sayaka, because you are a good person, and a good friend and most puella magi would take a good friend in this line of work over all the combat support in the world.

That means that now that all the witches are gathering in Mitakihara, Kyouko's not willing to move into our territory and trust us. Oh I get that, I just decided the other votes are doing a bad job at getting Sayaka out of her funk. I already explained my reasoning before and I am on a phone so I don't want to type anouther mini essay. But we want to cheer Sayaka up enough so she will be able to get those experiences that will bolster in self esteem in the long wrong.

My idea was to bolster Sayaka now by reinforcing she has friends, by hugging her and by explaining why and how we belive she will be a great magical girl and why she is a good friend. As much as people mock 'belive in the me that believes in you' combat units thrive under the fact that people will keep fighting so they do not let their squadmates down.

EDIT: Never mind, found it. And wow, since when was that feature there, next to the report button? Anyway...yeah, this vote is tough. It's a toss-up between focusing on giving Sayaka some goals she can work towards right now, or just offering some comfort.

Heh. Sayaka + clones + melee...yeah, that's going to be an amusing combination in the near future. On the one hand, we're about to get the perfect person for teaching her how to fight that way. On the other hand, she's going to make Sayaka feel woefully inadequate and inferior, at least at first, when it comes to this style.

Actually, suggestion: ask Sayaka to ask Kyouko about about her story, and about what happened between her and Mami. Tell her not to be too pushy or judgmental, though. And I would take out that reconciling Kyouko and Mami is a second motive for arranging for her training with Kyouko. It would piss Kyouko off if she ever found out, and it would make it seem like we're just using Sayaka as a means to an end.

I'm debating whether to put them in or out. "It'd mean the world to mami" has... A lot of weight. That this is something truly valuable to us. But... As people say, it's risky. The reconcile bit can go for sure...

After thinking about it I like this vote, before I would have said that there is still space to explicity enlist sayaka's help with the incoming meguca, but now I think it would be counter`productive to ask her that only for Sabrina to take control of everything like she always does.

uhh... thinking about it, the next time Sayaka says something about her not helping enough, we tell her that, besides fighting, and we aren't really planning on being on a fight anytime soon, Mami and Homura don't do much either (well, Homura stalks Madoka, but we cannot tell her that).
