Unless I forgot the details, AN made noises about the Trelli pulling out their mercenaries if it looked like we were going to crash the Khemetri government. The Trelli just can't afford that any more than they can afford our crashing. Us refusing a Khemetri deal of territory for tribute would probably signal for the Trelli to pull their men out to force us back to the negotiating table- they want this outcome.

We can create mercenary companies quickly, but that would definitely set us back to losing, and the Trelli could hire on for the Khemetri instead so we'd lose badly. Not a good outlook, even if we won in the end the cost could be a LOT higher than we've already paid.

This, pretty words aside, is a victory for us. The territory was disputed and now it's ours. Petty cash to soothe the bruises we've given is something we can afford.

@Academia Nut Our commanding general is the Excellent Martial Heir, right? How does he feel our people would respond to us offering tribute to the Khemetri, continuing the war, or acknowledging their superiority?

So, how exactly does the narrative work if we give tribute?

Because it's a really weird peace in context of the time. One hand we win because we keep the King of the Hill title and the Khemetri "lose" the Great Power war. On the other hand, we're ending the war by paying tribute. Something that is generally done by the losing side, as evident by the loss of prestige.

Are the Khemetri losing even more prestige than we are if we end up bribing the prince?

At a guess, for us it may be dressed up as the King (or Heir) bribing the Khemetri to go home and kill the instigator of the war, satisfying Greater Justice and reasoning that wealth is less important than lives.

That, and we can now turn our attention to the Highlanders.

Because I imagine that we are actually more pissed at them.

And did we give the surviving Trelli mercenaries PTSD? Because this is the kind of warfare they probably never even imagined. Might convince the Trelli to be very, very polite to Great Powers in the future.

@Academia Nut , does the king still stands legacy have any use or advantage at all outside of a king of the hill war? Even narrative ones?
Nope. However with the tribute option we hold onto our King of the Hill while the Khem lose theirs.

This means that given past examples, whenever our neighbors get uppity they will try to attack us using the Take the Crown CB, so the legacy becomes useful then.

[X] Offer tribute (-5 Prestige, -10 Wealth, keeps King of the Hill, chance of +1 Stability)

So, rebuild our wealth and martial, then proceed to get in a position to gut the HK and preferably the Trelli. By that point, our territorial borders should be mostly stable and we can focus on consolidating.

Later on, we'll probably get in a fight with Khemetri for the fate of Asia Minor, but things, as it stands, should be a time to get our affairs in order. And that means ensuring the neighbors we can't afford to let alone anymore getting some Assault Trees.

I really want to do some 2XMain Raises to solidify professional soldiery.

AN just confirmed it'll be at least a century of peace. I'm pretty happy with that, and if they come back I'll be even happier to fight them with another century of buildup on our side.

Or we could just finish things now and not have to go through this whole rigmarole again... People are still apparently super gungho to take out the HKs but the fact remains that the Khems are a far worse threat to us. The current winning option leaves them in a equal or superior position to when they started, and us in a far inferior position. I don't see why people assume time favors us.

It's actually the immediate term favors us, all our attention is finally concentrated in one theatre and we have our Genius here. Odds are very good we finish this.

The reason is the legacy we chose
Stop. That choice is in the past and a sunk cost now. The only question that matters is what the best choice is for the future, and getting us out of the war immediately for negligible real cost is clearly it.

Because I want to see the prince and the dragon have more awesome fight scenes...
What if, instead, we hooked them up? But that would mean peace and diplomatic relations, so better pick one of the peace deals ;)

We pull it out and give it to a Chosen commander whenever we begin to push the button.
That would be badass as all hell

Only a peer power can do that, and they're not exactly common. Almost nonexistent in fact.

Sunk Cost Fallacy. Besides, its real benefit is it makes attacking us a much less attractive proposition.

I'm convinced by the fact that our new government system has massively boosted our Wealth generation, and by the fact that there's an unusually strong nomad horde milling around. We should build up, take the Lowlands from the HK, and then build a pile of walls that'll make China feel inadequate. If in a century or two they want to try again we'll be ready, if we can take the Lowlands.

You could probably swing it as a degree of "They have acknowledged our superiority, but we have deigned to let them 'buy' up the land we already claimed. Wasn't very useful anyway so we obviously get so much more with this nice tribute. What, yes, I know that they seem quite impressive, but even though we totally would have won if we had kept going it really wasn't worth it. Now, check out the cool shit they gave me like this vial of mercury! Isn't it awesome?"

A few. For one, it definitely makes people taking a swing at you much less likely.

Our commanding general is the Excellent Martial Heir, right? How does he feel our people would respond to us offering tribute to the Khemetri, continuing the war, or acknowledging their superiority?

The People would celebrate a peace that let them keep their land, and grimly continue on if the decision was made to do so.

[X] The war will continue (War continues, have mid-turn actions before next War Mission rolls to potentially regenerate forces)

One must learn to NEVER poke the bear.

No. It really, really doesn't leave us in a worse position. It gives us time to set up some 10 mercs, develop steel from case-hardening, ride our Population Explosion further, GA, kill the HK, and secure our eastern borders.

As a rule- the side with the technological edge and the population growth edge has time on its side. The Khemetri don't gain anything from this war besides Tactical Phases.

It's all well and good to spew meaningless populist rhetoric and ape the Roman senate- but for all the bitching and moaning about the Khemetri being a superior civ (I'm looking at you @Susano) we have a huge number of edges that we need to leverage. We fought the Khemetri to a standstill while fought by 2 other regional powers. Not going for the jugular here isn't going to miraculously kill us.
