If we'd really get a steam-engine, that might help with the mining.
I didn't realize that "attempt to finish your mother's work" has such a lead.
Yeah, it is. That's why I picked it. The idea that we would get gunpowder is absolutely laughable. The ideas about steam engines even more so. But I don't really care what we get, because the other options are intolerable.

The "Diplomacy" options are flatly unpalatable. The Highlander one essentially involves that kingdom in our internal politics which is just asking for trouble. The other is self exile that gives the nomads horseback riding, which is also just no.

I don't actually find the war option that terrifying other than it further boosts our martial focus and likely martial traits. Both of which have generally proven problematic, if not bad. It also advances the warrior's image in Ymaryn society. Something that I think we are trying to limit.

The science option simply puts her away to probably get us something useful.

@Academia Nut a few questions for you.
  1. What's the span of years we've covered in the quest so far, roughly? I know the early turns were extremely variable.
  2. What are the current rough estimates for our population?
  3. Map?

We literally can't unlock horseback riding units en mass beyond couriers which we already have.
I'm quite skeptical. My personal estimate of her armour weight is 20 pounds (including her and the horse). Medieval chest armour (with much better forging techniques) typically weighed between 15 and 30 pounds. 20 pounds is probably conservative since she and the horse both had some amount of armour.

Add that on to a 100 lb girl (about right for 5ft. tall) for a total load of 120 pounds. And these horses were then used as couriers, with no mention of mount-swap stations, so presumably they had significant endurance at that load.

Well, 120 pounds is not an unreasonable weight for small men either. Even today, something like 10% of men can be 100 pounds without being dangerously thin. Jockeys average 108-118.

It's not like we can mount every warrior now, but we could definitely have enough riders for elites.

Still catching up (only 8 more pages to go!) but I wanted to put down my thoughts quick. After sleeping on it, I realized what we actually need is for Rulwyna to go

[X] Forge a new path of war

It doesn't increase martial, it involves Rulwyna controlling the martial chiefs that are already there. I also hope that she's likely to
  • Find better martial talents at the bottom where she is – the talented sons – than the old rarefied and hoary chiefs.
  • Bridge the south (who remember the bringer of Death To The Hats) and the north (she is still the daughter of the Heroic King of the Stallions).
  • Increase the social position of the female horse riders, and provide them a spokesperson at court.

Furthermore, we're at freaking war, and need a Heroic King down there still. Plus this should allow her to innovate; we got scale mail and horse messengers last turn, what might we discover next?

Given how the Ymaryn operates, it's likely we are not going to vasalize the Hath, but something else? Maybe a protectorate?
You know, one possibility is the friendlyish nomads. They managed to retain gratitude for several generations, which is pretty good for plainsmen. We may be able to get a subordinate tribe of domesticated ex nomads out of them. Somewhat similar to the Russian Cossaks.

As for the current vote, I'm uncertain. We really do need to keep some friendly neighbors, as guarding against rampant dumpster fires in every direction is extremely time consuming. But the extant option strikes me as very sketchy. That sort of adventurism can easily turn badly if it goes poorly. For instance, the HK could end up with a young prince who, by their laws, is the rightful heir to our thrown, and can bring army when he comes to insist.

Back on the forst hand, though, she is likely to be pretty decent at this, so the worst case isn't terribly likely. Probably.

I will say I'm very skeptical as to the accuracy of current speculation regarding potential results of Lolwynns research, though.

Pooooonnny express. We should complete those watchtower so that we can build a true relay network of couriers.

Unless...

@Academia Nut Do we already implemented a relay network of couriers and rest stations ala Pony Express and the Inca's Chasquis system?

As she finished reading the report, Rulhythyn said numbly, "We she go see her..."
Pretty sure you mean, "We should go see her."
I refuse to believe that Crow would be so offended by a seeker for knowledge that he would strike them with lightning merely for being curious.
School of hard knocks is very much a thing in this age, and Crow the Trickster's whole shtick is punishing people for something. Sometimes you learn not to go somewhere or do a certain thing. How Lolwyna failed in her experiment will determine what lesson our people take away from it.

Unless she was distilling wine. That setup can explode as well, but copper is used even today for it as the heat transference is superior.

Would be very amusing if we got hard liquors out of this research (and promptly make molotovs from it).
Distilled alcohol? That also fits the Fire That Is Water, and could explode, but usually not with very great force unless she was working with a stupidly huge amount.

Medieval armor is actually heavier because they could work metal more finely more easily and single pieces of plate offered better protection by allowing larger masses of metal to be worn without hindrance. This is basically large iron sequins sewn onto a leather backing at present.

Also, I'm going to pat myself on the back slightly.
Sounds like it'll average to a minor win for us.

Which means we're still tied up there next turn when the nomads strike us.

I think we should really dedicate two Main war missions to guarantee we end this offensive and don't just stall it.

Not for me. I could care less. I want to make SURE they don't roll well enough they're still around to pester us next turn.

It's not enough to win. We would do that with one main. We need to break them this turn.

My speculative guess, which I've said several times, is that a Main would be enough to win. But not enough to guarantee we break them.

*sprains arm*

Though I have to confess I'm really glad the nomads turned out to be friendly. I'm not worried about Lolwyna going to war if we only have to fight Hat. They aren't that big.

Uh...one of the arguments for NOT going full in war is that it would prevent the Highlanders from eating them up on the other end if we broke the Hathatyn entirely...which was indeed somewhat stalled, on the reasoning that the Hathatyn weren't nearly the serious threat that the Highlanders occupying the same land and/or the refugees they'd spawn would be..

That and a much less common opinion that this is as close to a low risk infantry refinement engine as we could find.

Oh, fair enough! I didn't mean to say I was the only one was right. *Belatedly pats random other right people* *Screams about sprained arm*

But still there WAS a lot of claims that one main was plenty to smash them.

Which admittedly would be a pretty classic negative result from Best of the Best.

"Since I am the best darn alchemist in the business, I can work with all of the liquids at once."

@Academia Nut The HK are all about order, yes? So, is the fact that Rulwyna is illegitimate, and not necessarily heir in any case, likely to offend their sensibilities?

Diplomacy 4
Economy 14 [-1+4]
Econ Expansion 11 [+1-4]
Martial 9 {14}
Wealth 12 [+3]

I'm worried about red martial here too....
Come on let's do wars so we're not at red martial at 0 stab... Think about the stats too
So spend econ, which lowers our martial. Put up a bunch of walls or aqueducts.
If they want order so much, maybe they should try out our system, which seems to be more stable than their.
By that logic they should join the Xoh. Moloch Calls makes their polity extremely stable in times of crisis.

She'd probably have to buy up most of the output of one vineyard at present to pull that off...

Nope. A distillery exploding is an actual danger if improperly handled even for small ones. I'm no expert myself, but friends of mine do distil and talked about it. And the amount they distil at a time is maybe 100l (that is, how much goes into it at once, they refill multiple times).

Assuming that a larger vessel is easier to build with the tools available, she may have been able to blow it up like that.

I would just die if instead of gunpowder like everyone is talking about instead QM finally confirmed the whole is magic real thing and gave us the firebolt spell :V:V

It would be an amazing level of salt and holy shit magic at the same time
I really had this as my first reaction but then reality set in and I thought 'WAS SHE TRYING TO HARNESS LIGHTNING? YOOOOO' but then everyone burst both of my bubbles by talking about explosions.

BUT THEN I REALIZED THAT EXPLOSIONS ARE AMAZING EITHER WAAAAY
