Until someone else gets Earthshaping and pokes at it hard enough.

It's a publicly available jutsu in Leaf, even if it'll be restricted as soon as Hazou lays a golden egg the size of the Hokage's office. Not something that'll remain in Leaf hands forever.
On the bright side, if Asuma was somehow not convinced from the SkyTowers or the SkyWalkers or the Clanless Training Adjustment or the EM Nuke, the "permanent end to Leaf's metal problems" and "massive ability to inflict economic warfare on the rival villages" from a simple utility Jutsu will probably drive him over the edge.

EDIT: Actually, how many setting-breakers has Hazō given Leaf?
  1. Skytowers
  2. Skywalkers
  3. Revamping the Academy system so that clanless ninja actually get trained.
  4. Storage Seal Bank For Civilians (this one seems a stretch)
  5. Zoo Rush
  6. Skyslicers
  7. EM Nuke
  8. Team Akane Seal Bank (effects pending)
  9. The permanent end of metal scarcity in Leaf (soon)
  10. Massive economic warfare capabilities (sorry MARI) (soon)

NARUTO: Why'd you call me here, boss?

ASUMA: It turns out Hazō Gōketsu is actually Leaf's most valuable long-term asset, in additional to being essential for stopping the literal end of everything in the short term.

NARUTO: Fuck.

ASUMA: Fortunately, he appears to have actually learned his lesson and came straight to me when he figured out how to trivially create high-grade iron ex nihilo.

NARUTO: He did WHA—

ASUMA: Actually, it's more like literally all metals alongside a bunch of other things like gems and super-durable glass.

NARUTO:

ASUMA: Yeah. Think of him like a new jinchūriki in terms of strategic utility. Looks like I'm upgrading my offer to teach him how to be a clan Clan Head into…. being my direct apprentice, I guess. Do you think he would want a Chakra Pony?

NARUTO:

ASUMA: Let's get you some Willowbark Tea.

if we're asking for more stuff in exchange for economic craziness here's my suggestions from discord
- resolve boosts for Dragons n shit
- training jutsu (free xp like YSJ/PCJ. QMs want these to be hella rare but I mean... tower restricted or Sarutobi special seems plausible.)
- rasengan (Naruto's but he could negotiate something for us. Or not, just tossing it out there.)
- any summon jutsu that are plausibly allowed to be shared. I could see Enma allowing Hazou to learn something for example.
- paper controlling ninjutsu like Shikigami had
- calligraphy booster
- jutsu optimized for Elemental clone use (debuffs/battlefield control etc)

HAZŌ: So you know those iron shortages we were having? I just solved them.

ASUMA: Wow Hazō, that's incredib—

HAZŌ: Actually sir, I just solved all of Leaf's metal problems. Permanently.

ASUMA: what

HAZŌ: [Language Chosen By Mari]
SOCIAL TRANSLATION: So, now that I'm firmly established as the goose that keeps regularly turning dirt into diamonds — literally in this case — there's a few things I'm going to need. First off, we need to broaden what can be considered a "Clan Secret" to include whatever amazing novel application or incredible hidden power a Clan discovers after researching nonexclusive Jutsu and the like. Unless… you would prefer if I focused entirely on Gōketsu exclusives instead of things I'd be more than happy to bring to the Tower?
It will be a hard sell based purely on its own merits.

Fortunately, we're not trying to convince him based on merit. We want this to be our reward for solving all of Leaf's metal problems permanently (and allowing it to inflict truly devastating economic warfare on the other Villages while conventional warfare is bound by AMITY) and we're just giving him a plausible reason to allow it.

Finally, we have a chance to make FOOM an actual protected Clan Secret.

Also whatever the next thing we revolutionize is. And the thing after that. And after that.

Asuma's pretty cool… but I'd rather trade him these awesome things for Leaf instead of being forced to give them and hoping he rewards us. We have a duty to our clan as well.

Can you tell I'm still pissed Hiruzen forced us to explain SkyTowers to him ("Seal of the Decade" by his own admission) and then gave us table scraps in exchange?

Before we do anything else, let's talk to Mari and Kei and see if "redefining Clan Secrets" so that it includes shit like this (and FOOM, but Asuma won't know that) is possible.

Other than that, let's start making a wishlist. Off the top of my head…
  • SC for Noburi and Yuno
  • TH instructor for Hazō and Reo (maybe Asuma himself?)
  • Does the Tower know Might Gai's make-you-go-super-fast Lightning Jutsu that he got from the Turtles? If so, give that to Yuno plz.
  • Some of those amazing ninjutsu that you can only get from the Uchiha or the Sarutobi and/or the Tower. (Did somebody say "Multi-Element Jutsu?")

I specify taking samples mainly because there's no way we can haul literal tons of iron into Asuma's office, as cool as that might be. I'd suggest bringing Asuma to the pile, but then we wouldn't have privacy.

...actually, you know what? Screw it, let's make this work:
  • Disassemble a 50m MARI into all its valuable components
  • Move it all into a high-security room on the Goketsu Estate. Build a new one if the current ones aren't big enough
  • Invite Asuma over for a meeting
    • Tell him that with ES we've solved Leaf's iron shortage
      • Show him the samples
      • Tell him the total yields
    • We know that selling too much all at once can destabilize a market, so we'd like the economic think tank to help figure out how much is safe to sell.
    • [What we want as a reward]

With Kagome's assistance I am confident we could put all of our shiny rocks into storage seals to ensure no such shiny gets left behind.

"In this one I have enough Iron to fuel Leaf's current needs for over a year..."

"...here we have materials for hardened windows made out of oversized gemstones... (sorry Shino)"

"...And last but not least I made you a flawless sapphire the size of your head. Pretty neat huh?"

Use whichever you like, I'm not a cop.

...But are you a fed..? :p

(I don't know if Velorien wants to write this, but like... we do need the information at some point, so I'll put a vote in.)

I would argue that Asuma would, if only because if something happens to Hazou then Leaf no longer has an iron/gemstone printer.

You know, on top of the other things that Leaf would lose, like resident sealmaster, clan head, treason dragon, ideas guy...

He very well might accept "the Gouketsu will ensure there are enough people trained up in this technique for redundancy's sake." The tower *does* give limited monopolies (I believe that's what the Aburame telescope thing is?), and clans are generally trusted to ensure their value to Leaf is not lost.

(I'm definitely on the "tell Asuma" team here.)

Started to read about silica. Diatoms have cell walls made of silica. Link between 3D seals and Biosealing? Shortcut to making Orochimaru move past human experimentation, green with envy?
"Diatoms are a widespread group and can be found in the oceans, in soils, and on damp surfaces. They are one of the dominant components of phytoplankton in nutrient-rich coastal waters and during oceanic spring blooms, since they can divide more rapidly than other groups of phytoplankton. Most live pelagically in open water, although some live as surface films at the water-sediment interface (benthic), or even under damp atmospheric conditions. They are especially important in oceans, where they contribute an estimated 45% of the total oceanic primary production of organic material."
"A frustule is the hard and porous cell wall or external layer of diatoms. The frustule is composed almost purely of silica, made from silicic acid, and is coated with a layer of organic substance ... composed of several types of polysaccharides." Undergoes interesting changes during cell division which could be observed.

Velorien like politics and dear god do we need to buy Paper as much time as possible to finish our previous reward so we can decide what we want this time.

So, Conclave time sounds perfect (unless I'm wrong and the QMs would prefer something else). Not really sure if it's an "Interlude" since we left off there at a previous scene and Hazō was fully present for everything that follows but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is very good for us, along with the production of impossibly large gemstones, but there's a flipside to this, that we've previously discussed but bears mentioning again: we have discovered the means to crash multiple parts of Leaf's economy, and theoretically anyone else with Earthshaping could learn to do the same.

My inner opportunist wants to sell a lot of iron and gems to get rich. My inner Uplift wants to sell a lot of iron so Leaf can have more iron to use. My inner Asuma very much wants to know that the iron markets could crash at any point if some reckless ninja produced a boatload of iron.

So here's what I'm thinking: we go to Asuma and say "Hey, I figured out how to make unlimited iron ore (and various other metals) from the Earthshaping jutsu. I'd like to sell as much of this as possible so Leaf can have a ton of cheap high-quality iron, but I don't want to crash the market by selling too much. Could you direct me to the economic think tank so we can figure out how much I can sell without adverse effects?"

This has a few good effects:
  • We don't harm innocent people by crashing the market
  • We still sell a lot of iron and gems and other valuable stuff and get rich off of it
  • Asuma can take measures to protect Leaf's metal markets from someone else pulling this trick in the future
  • Asuma will be absolutely delighted to see Hazou take something like this to his desk first instead of recklessly endangering Leaf
  • And most importantly: we don't have to think about it too hard. The Tower will take care of all the hard parts, all we do is produce the valuables and rake in the profits
    • Even better, if something does go wrong, we don't bear any responsibility for it! We gave control over to the think tank, we're just the producers.
It may be blasphemous of me to say, but we should take this opportunity to be anti-treason. Actively lower the likelihood that we'll be accused of treason in the future. Wild, I know, but I think we have a shot at pulling it off. We can do this now, in the same update as we respond to Asuma about the Hagoromo, and get that ball rolling ASAP.
I agree with absolutely everything you say except "ASAP."

Instead, we should:
  1. Gather our Gōketsu Elders (especially Mari and Kei) and drop this massive bombshell on them.
  2. Optimize your "Anti-Treason" plan with them.
  3. THEN go to Asuma and implement the optimized Anti-Treason plan, alongside making our suggestion for the Hagoromo situation (and accepting his offer to teach us how to not accidentally commit treason be a Clan Head)

Word count: <300
  • Duration: <= 48 hours
  • Offscreen
    • Sanity checks (Mari/Kei/Snowflake)
      • Asuma: plan conversations.
        • How to benefit without economic disaster?
          • Limit output?
          • Sell only to Tower?
          • Foreign nations?
      • Ino:
        • Hagoromo discussion, Earthshaped mirror - are they OPSEC violations?
  • Ino
    • Plan a private date.
      • Be there for her. Let her lead.
    • Would she be a sounding board for a clan head issue?
      • Explain Asuma's Hagoromo suggestions.
      • Will Hagoromo ever leave Goketsu alone?
        • They'll always have plausible deniability.
        • Would it matter if Goketsu de-escalated?
      • How can Hazo break the cycle?
      • Discuss Ruka, reconciliation.
    • Corundum mirror - shell around reflective metal, jeweled handle, all materials condensed/toughened.
  • Asuma:
    • Request appropriate security.
      • Provide samples, calculations, projected economic impacts of ES 50.
        • Unlimited gold/jewels, novel materials, increased ore production/quality.
        • Tone: demonstrating capabilities, discussing next steps, possibilities.
      • Goketsu should benefit - our insights/time are distinctly Goketsu - but mostly, we want to help Leaf.
        • Tone: deferring compensation discussion. Strategy-focused.
      • We've learned our lesson.
      • How should we proceed?
    • Hagoromo:
      • We'll never like Ritsuo, but we're tired.
        • Destroying Ritsuo's knife helped nobody.
        • The plays helped nobody.
        • It's always more hate.
    • Ruka:
      • Is her punishment mostly about Akane? If so, it seems disproportionate.
        • It's effectively death. She didn't kill Akane.
      • Suggest long-term till'n'fills supervised by KEI/clanless nin. Exposure combats hatred.
      • Does he think Ruka can change?
    • Reconciliation:
      • Goketsu/Hagoromo need to see each other as full people.
        • Reference the evolution of Noburi/Neji's relationship.
      • Assign Goketsu-Hagoromo teams long-term till'n'fills requiring cooperation. Neutral (Sarutobi? Inuzaka?) leaders.
      • Are there more flexible Hagoromo? We want to see their clan as complex, multifaceted.
    • Ren:
      • Orochimaru might kidnap her. Explain within sanity check's guidelines.
  • Misc.
    • Sealing Research:
      • Next Minato seal/Directional Explosives.
      • Eschew prep, use SSA, reroll -9/-12.
    • Get other nation's scents for Canvass.
    • Test burning sand macerators.
I think that giving Ino a beautiful, nigh-indestructible mirror is a great idea and I encourage everyone to steal it.

I'm very interested in whether Asuma believes that Ruka is capable of change: if he says 'honestly no probably not' then...that's...I have no idea what to do with that other than to maybe go 'well uh okay perhaps an effective death penalty is the right move'. The answer should be interesting, at any rate.

And I think that asking him if their refusal to officiate Noburi's marriage was the Will of Fire is a pretty good question, especially in a segment where the tone is pretty clearly 'this is all pointless'.

Nope. We're not doing anything until we have a chance to consult with Mari and Kei.

Here, have a plan shell that I'll fill in with the various ideas the thread has for how to proceed.

THIS IS NOT A SOMETHING WE DO WITHOUT A PLAN OF EXACTLY HOW WE WANT TO PROCEED

[X] Action Plan: Emergency Clan Meeting

  • Call a high OPSEC meeting of Team Uplift.
  • Explain Earthshaping's new capabilites
  • Discuss the strategic and geopolitical implications
    • Leaf's metal problems are over, forever
      • Leaf's iron shortages — gone
    • Corundum has tremendus utility (architecture, goggles, glasses, lab equipment)
      • Production will massively disrupt Aburame
      • Is there a way to minimize that?
    • We can make flawless gems of arbitrarily large size
      • Would this be of use to the Minami?
      • Speaking of, Asuma's strict "No Clan Wars" policy is what they have always desperately wanted.
      • This could be a chance to free them (or let them free themselves) from the Hyūga.
      • Are the Hyūga still puppeteerinf that Hagoromo via debtage?
      • Should we form a block with them like Jiraiya originally intended? This is a perfect opportunity.
    • Possible Gōketsu wealthstream via diamonds and gold collection
      • Oversupplying market is huge concern
    • Possible Gōketsu wealthstream via diamonds and gold collection
    • AMITY has shifted warfare from conventional to economic
      • This is the greatest tool in the history of economic warfare
      • With Akane's assasination, AMITY status unclear
      • How could Leaf best utilize ES against enemy villages?
  • Obviously, we're taking this to the Hokage immediately
  • How should we proceed from here?
    • [insert details on various player-made plans]
    • Complete Disclosure, No Strings [add details]
    • Attempt to Monopolize Ability for Gōketsu Advantage []
    • etc.
  • If rewards on the table, what do we seek?
  • We need to talk about Akane

Too many problems. Beyond the Gōketsu endeavors, Leaf was facing iron shortages as two of the mines near Tanzaku Gai had run dry. The Tower had that well in hand because of its obvious importance to military readiness, but it meant they weren't paying as much attention to the equally important salt shortage, which, if it continued, would make it harder for ordinary people to make it through the winter as the costs of preserved meats from the butcheries would skyrocket. The Ministry was facing the expected problem of middlemen pocketing the profits from the lowered taxes, rather than the common people. Worse, the Land of Fire was dealing with persistent banditry problems – no doubt from refugees and displaced farmers from the war now preying on those that kept their lands and were now enjoying a bumper crop.
Quote stolen from @_The_Bomb's post.

I don't track the thread's jutsu "hacking"/post-scarcity economic crash discussions too closely, so apologies in advance if this has already been brought up. I wonder: it economically viable to use ES to extract salt from saltwater beach sand?

For the Asuma "post-scarcity" conversation, I'd like to suggest giving the Tower a storage seal of iron, under the understanding that:
1. Everyone involved keeps this quiet/need to know until further discussion,
2. The clan gets paid out as it gets used, and
3. Hazo gets mission pay, if the tower wants more to be created as a strategic reserve.

I think we can trust in Asuma (or his delegates) to come up with a good plan. For the time being, they'll be better than we are at handling the Leaf-internal politics. I'd also like to think that this helps us earn a bit more trust with Asuma, because we're acknowledging our limitations, and giving the Hat flexibility in resolving this issue.

Ah yes, a meeting about a meeting. Everyone's favourite.

Okay, but seriously, if there are some major considerations that we're overlooking, Mari and Kei are going to short-circuit @FaintlySorcerous' plan at the sanity-check stage. And if there aren't, we're winning nothing by forcing the sanity-check to be a separate update, so we may as well move on swiftly to the actual Hokage presentation.

  • Call a high OPSEC meeting of Team Uplift.
  • Explain what we just discovered and the MASSIVE implications it has
  • Obviously, we're going to the Hokage with this right away
  • Let's discuss how to

OK, but can we at least pretend to care about Akane and her attackers still? Asking Asuma/Mari/Ami to retrieve some spices and items from other countries and villages, for Canvass to cross reference, costs us nothing, and will tell us who our enemy is, or at least give us a good idea. We should also revisit the Hidan idea.

ES is cool, economics is fine, but can we be a little bit like Hazou?

Thank you all for coming to my plea of in character actions Ted Talk.

I haven't been reading all the plans, sorry. But does one of them explain why we specifically don't want the Hag teaching children we're responsible for?

"Our disagreement started as a conflict of ideas, we obviously don't want them teaching their ideas to our kids". Something like that.
This feels like knowledge that Asuma should have.

If academy washouts are out of question, how about crippled former ninja? Does Earthshaping need handseals?

Chapter 593: Skip This Unless You Like Science
SCIENCE =D
Hazō struggled for a response, but his brain was awash in fog. He'd been fine thirty seconds ago, but the memory triggered by Asuma's words had suddenly cracked him open and poured in pain. He swallowed carefully to make sure his voice wouldn't break along with his heart.
O to the O to the F
Hazō snorted. "Yes, well, apparently dogs have a childish sense of humor."

"What's that you say? Dogs are innocent, truthful, and open with their feelings? Why thank you, Hazō. You are most kind."
Cannai is the best, did we say that lately? He really is
When he wanted to be, Cannai was a terrible liar.
How does that- what does- why he- huh.
The tail whipped impatiently. "Go on, cast it. I triple-dog dare you." He looked up, rummaging through his memories. "Ah, yes. 'Do it or admit you're chicken.'"

"What?" Hazō said. "That's not...it doesn't...I'm obviously not a chicken! I don't have feathers, or steel claws, or a beak."
Featherless biped that he is!
"Did I say it right? Is it making you feel insulted and demeaned? It's supposed to make you feel insulted and demeaned."
He is the best.
For a moment the soil felt alien and unlike that of the Human Path's fundament. It refused his touch, blocking him off without effort...and then it parted before him, allowing his chakra entrance as easily (more easily?) than the soil of the Gōketsu compound ever had.
Oooooooh!
"It's a very confined effect, and very [bark]. I'm not sure I would notice it if I wasn't nearby. Even nearby, I would likely miss it I weren't paying attention."
We... could weaponise this.
"Hm. I'm not sure how to explain it. It's a sensory word, but not a sense that you have. It's something like attempting to explain color to a blind person, I fear."
Fortunately we can learn biosealing to supplement our senses
"Intriguing. I've never seen that before."
It's very encouraging to hear that from Cannai, and it's one of the few sentences that are better when you hear them from Cannai rather than from your physician
His eyes went unfocused. "It's an actual physical effect. The chakra isn't holding the current state, it made the change and made it permanent. When you end the technique and your chakra disperses, the material will still be denser. Will it be an issue if I break it?"
We need to learn that "unfocus your eyes to see inside matter" trick
"Now that is lovely," Cannai said. "Congratulations, Hazō. You have used your chakra to make something purely beautiful. Not for murder, not for houses. Purely for beauty."
Yay :)
Q: Can we compress coal into diamonds?
A: Yes
From (Moderate) "Squeezed Finances" to Moderately Filthy Rich "Squeezed Finances"

And most importantly: we don't have to think about it too hard. The Tower will take care of all the hard parts, all we do is produce the valuables and rake in the profits
"GM-had-fun XP: negative seventeen. What the fuck, you made us extrapolate an entire country's mine and ore availability status? We had to develop the map we have into 3 dimensions plus geological time to plant hematite deposits rationally and see where they would have been found???"

1. I think it's been mentioned before in the thread, but is there an economic think tank other than just us?

2. The Tower is about/should undergoes significant audit due to Ruka. Is it a good idea to require/request large scale action right now? If not, can we insert Goketsu and friendlies into position in the Tower or form a new bloc? We don't like the old ones anyway.

3. Let's straight up borrow Asuma's knives. He can have it back when he goes on the field, we'll pay hefty recompense if we break them, but we might be able to research more/better Chakra metal.
