I am sure rionna will have the patience of a saint as we spiel

:V

Hence the shortness of my offer that enables us to actually be frank and upfront.

Refinement:

[x] Take a moment to calm down.
-[X] Tell Riona you appreciate her being frank and upfront. You'll try to do the same.
-[X] You're disgusted and want to make that kind of justice unnecessary. Preferably by making Witchification reversible and ubiquitous cleansing based on your power.
-[X]You are concerned this will move Kyubey to direct action against you and want an insurance policy because supposedly witchification provides large amounts of energy to stave off entropy. If Kyubey is Kardashev T4 that would be bad.
-[X]You can make grief seeds last longer, ease their suffering but that doesn't actually solve the prisoner inside them.
-[X]If you're slain, the dream must not die with you. Stop taking souls. Work with you to evaluate souls for rebodiment or release into whatever afterlife exists. Free cleansing for life and she gets to be your insurance policy if she can claim you.

    [X] Explain you're creating a better world.
-[X] Admit Riona's actions as claimed might have been necessary in the past.
-[X] Explain your work and hopes regarding implementing justice, protection, equity and accountability for Magical Girls. (etc.)
--[X] Riona's brand of 'justice' should cease to be necessary.
    -[X] Explain free cleansing distribution.
--[X] Clear Seeds, upsides and downsides. Need for a better, moral solution.

--[X] You're creating a network to work on it. You hope Riona can help.
[X] You want to work together.

--[X] Invite Riona to stick around, free cleansing as long as she stays, get to know each other.
--[X] Ask again that she considers working together.
    -[X] Regarding her claims:
--[X] You can't abide her taking any more Souls, for reasons stated; moral, ethical and practical concerns.
--[X] Ask whether she can restore, and if not, release the Souls she's taken.
---[X] Part of the standards we want to set are humane treatment, for everyone.
---[X] Offer alternatives and solutions. Jail, therapy, magically created bodies for those souls, magical research, whatever is necessary. You know that it'll take time.
[X] Continue vote in abeyance: Stay neutral, don't judge her. Give your spiel.

[X] Use grief to generate quiet sound in Mami's ear.
    -[X] "Timestop, now!"
[X] Rionna's soul gem is a ring on her finger right now. Gem her by cutting her hand off and obliterating her body.
-[x] Keep soul gem in privacy sphere, to isolate from enslaved souls.

    [x] Explode her gem
[x] Communicate to Mami via grief: potential foe, high threat, move away, timestop on signal. Arrange some sort of simple, clear and fast signal using grief.
[x] Calmly ask what that makes her. How many people has she done this to, and under what circumstances. We'll listen.
[x] She's keeping people as slaves. We wanted to work with her, so so much. We want to make a world where the things she's seen don't happen to anyone.
[x] What's done is done, but she can stop now if she chooses to. Could she let the shades go?
[x] Make her an offer- Clear Seeds, money, whatever. Bluntly state we want to help her get what she wants that doesn't involve harming others. Will she stop?

    --[X] De-Witching.
[X] You want to work with her. If you cooperate, you believe you can do amazing things.
-[X] But you can't accept what she's claimed. Enslaving people's Souls is wrong, even if they're bad. Ask her to stop. Can the Souls be restored or otherwise released to wherever they go after death?

--[X] Offer free cleansing for life, if she can agree with that.
[X] Ask her to give us a chance, to work with us, and do better.
-[X] Everyone should have the opportunity to become better then they were. That includes the souls she's trapped, and that includes her.
--[X] Perhaps we seem too idealistic and naive, and we know that sometimes a horrible criminal just can't be redeemed. Still, we want to try.
[X] Don't grant approval, but give body language and cues that she should keep talking at any time.
-[X] Use active listening, adding "go on" and "so,?" etc. to encourage her to talk more.
[X] Remain calm. There are worse people, and she didn't come to assault us.
[X] Rionna is speaking like she hasn't trusted anyone in a long time.
-[X] At some later point, explain our real magic is about working together. We will show her.

-[X] Her brashness is a front. She is very defensive ATM.

[X] Other points: we are the good person we want to be. Describe our soul. Meet our friends, and see proof. How does her telepathy work?

Eh. You know, I think Michael Stackpole was a bette

Wait, wait, wait, this is Puella Magi Adfligo Systema.
We can continue this discussion in PMs, if you want?
If you want, I guess? There's probably a thread for Star Wars novels around here somewhere, too.

(Aaron Allston was by far the better writer, probably my favorite to ever work on the franchise, BTW. :p)

Secondly, 'omae' never punctuates a statement when using it as a friendly term. The grammar rules in English are different so I admit that one was more of a knee-jerk reaction, but still.
This is basically a case of me copying an incorrect usage I'd seen by someone who was clearly not as fluent as they thought they were. (Not something I would usually do, but I was in a goofy mood and hadn't had my coffee yet.) In English, basically all I was going for was, "Slow your roll there, buddy." Smart-ass, sure, but not insulting.

And, if you recall, the scenario I painted earlier is Riona attacking people because they're our friends, specifically.
Based on what we've been told about her so far, I don't think she would do something so generically supervillain-esque. It doesn't really fit what Nadia told us about her or what she said to justify her own actions to us (and possibly to herself). Further information might prove otherwise, but I think Riona probably needs those justifications to live with herself.

One of these things is not like the others! Who wants to direct the IC conversation? What do they want to listen to??
Our imaginations thus far reduce to exactly the following?
Option one:
Listen to Rionna.

Idealism! w/ light rebuke of her actions.

Invitation.

Option two:

Listen to Rionna

Idealism!

Option three:

Listen to Rionna

Rebuke more

Idealism, bet our life on it

Invitation

Option four:

Combat and body kill

Option five:

Kill

Option six:

Combat preparation

Interrogate Rionna about shades / Rebuke

Invite as ultimatum

Option seven:

Interrogate Rionna about shades

Idealism!

Option eight :

Interview Rionna with a goal

Idealism!

I think only one option tries to directly pursue understanding the Magical Girl in front of us. Brush aside the punishment talk, and get her wish story and living circumstance. Be critical readers.

If we allow only to Rionna direct the conversation, we only get to hear what she thinks is important, not what we want to know.

I offered it to you all, no doubt.

When I said 'omae' was one of the rudest forms of 'you' in the sense of meaning 'bastard', I meant in conventional speech. 'Teme' and 'Kisama' and the others you brought up are from older dialects that are technically out of phase, so their use in anime is basically to convey a sense of "Man I fucking hate you so goddamn motherfucking month I slipped into fucking YE OLDE SPEAK TO CALL YOU A BITCH."
I now will mentally replace all subtitles for "teme" and "kisama" with Scottish insults.

@HeroCycle as I said about her drinking patterns, Riona doesn't seem to be in a mood to answer more questions. When we asked, she drank.

The leading vote starts by asking her to elaborate. It only then follows up with our spiel. If she can't even be bothered to extend us the courtesy of listening for a few minutes, about what should be obvious are matters of great importance, then she can kindly fuck off back to Dublin, as far as I'm concerned. You can't deal with someone unwilling to listen to begin with.

I think she will, though. Considering what we think she came to Mitakihara for, Clear Seeds should be of great interest to her.

When we asked, she drank.

Maybe she issued herself a drinking challenge. Now all we need to do is find all the instances when she sipped, chugged or drank from her flask, find all the consistencies, and make her drink until she runs off to the water closet, I guess?

(Aaron Allston was by far the better writer, probably my favorite to ever work on the franchise, BTW. :p)

This. This is what Heresy looks like. :rage:

Random thought: Get Riona more cider. Surely Homu's got some she can share, and with timestop, grief control, and a cellphone, we can make it look like we just pulled the cider out of hammerspace.

I'm sure this will get us enough Riona points that she will refrain from murder... as long as we keep giving showing our worth by giving her cider.

See, there's something one needs to understand about those who manipulate the Soul. They have seen all there is to humanity, and understand it's worth naught.

What really matters?

The drinks.

Asking her what she needs for her magic flask does sound like a good idea.

More spin control ideas for Sayaka and/or Mami assuming we reach an accord.

In case you hear it from Kyubey later, you reached a deal with Riona for research and to begin undoing the punishments she's inflicted. Without infinite cleansing to be able to afford imprisoning wrongdoers and with a power that needs minions she has resorted to Vlad the Impaler tactics in the name of justice. She uses her power to hunt down the souls of murderers, false griefbenders, and people who use infohazards maliciously and bind them into her service as a warning to others. Fighting her would be exactly as bad as fighting
you, she's basically a nuclear power considering she gets the powers of the souls she takes, so you're glad the two of you were able to come to a peaceful arrangement.

I'm sure she isn't in the mood for a deep chat, I agree.

You are supporting that from her descriptions.

Where we diverge is in the concept that we will have to go farther from her comfort zone, and get her to show us what we are interested in. I want us to pursue backstory. Simply learning that she is a veteran and desensitized to violence is not enough data.

Why should we not try? We do not need to repeatedly smack any triggers we discover. But as the person coming to our place, she can be asked as long as we respect hospitality and common sense.

Rionna has motive to talk about the hard choices she has made, whatever reasoning that is. I suspect that she wants to withdraw, now that her Justice mission is fubar. Sabrina has different motives, and wants to predict Rionna's future performance, based upon the rest of the morality and history she can discover. We are trying to see the person from all angles.

We could probably argue hypotheticals like this all day. If we wanted to try reading more into the flask, you could get "If I'm able to fully process what I've done, what I've seen, I'll grief spiral on the spot."

If that's the case, we'd need to get her a lot more sloshed than she is for her to safely tell us anything. Us dragging that stuff up would make her process it.

I am eagerly awaiting more primary material. What are the odds we have to add substance abuse counseling to our therapist wishlist?

Likely she can talk about it, particularly if Sabrina is there to purge her Grief. We can make it safe.
If she was coping with the witchbomb by addiction, we might be her only way to unload safely?

I'd call that a maybe leaning towards true. That doesn't mean Rionna's internalized a notion like "Grief Spirals are survivable if Sabrina is near".

Edit: My plan does fish for backstory I just realized. Going over old cases with her in the future.

Further Refinement. 132 Words. 129 If you exclude stage directions.

[x] Take a moment to calm down.
-[X] Tell Riona you appreciate her frankness. You'll try to do the same.
-[X] You can't do that and want to make that kind of justice unnecessary now. Preferably by making Witchification reversible and ubiquitous cleansing based on your power.
-[X]You can make grief seeds last longer, ease their suffering but that doesn't free their prisoners. *Show clear seed*
-[X]You are concerned going beyond this will move Kyubey to direct action and want an insurance policy because worst case, Kyubey is Kardashev T4.
-[X]Your power must be preserved. Stop taking souls. Work with you to evaluate souls for rebodiment or release into whatever afterlife exists. Free cleansing for life and she gets to be your insurance policy if she can claim you.

-[x] Assume she can operate while gemmed. Avoid touching the gem or hand with grief so she can't take your soul through it or get pulled into time stop.
-[x] Be prepared for either time stop or a countermeasure.
    [x] Redshirt Army
    [x] Onmar
[x] If she tries to leave the bubble or otherwise stop talking without agreeing to let the souls she's enslaved go:
-[x] If possible, signal for timestop and bodykill her as quickly as possible.
--[x] Otherwise, bodykill her as quickly as possible.
[x] Take a moment to calm down.
-[X] Tell Riona you appreciate her being frank and upfront. You'll try to do the same.
[X] How many people has she done this to? What were the circumstances? You're willing to hear her out, but her actions sound horrifying, morally and practically.
-[X] Hear her out if she explains.
-[X] You understand some of her actions might have been necessary before, but you're making progress towards creating a better world than that.
-[X] Explain your work and hopes to improve things.
    --[X] Standards, justice, society.
    --[X] Free cleansing, Clear Seeds.
--[X] Offer alternatives and solutions. Jail, therapy, magically created bodies for those souls, magical research, whatever is necessary.
[X] Rionna is probably both inebriated, and full of anxiety... enough to tank negotiations to escape her pain?
-[X] Her brashness is a front. She is very defensive ATM.
-[X] She told us to judge her, as a way to deal with us doing just that. This has happened to her before. Powers discrimination?
-[X] Rionna has a simple morality that she believes in very strongly.
--[X] She is not a good philosopher, there are contradictions
    --[X] She isn't very wise
---[X] or mature, though she is playing at the role of adulthood in the way she understands how.
    [X] Talk about Rionna.
-[X] Ask Rionna to list her goals. How old is Rionna? Personal history?
--[X] Don't follow up about sister
--[X] insist on talking about her self interest.
[X] Learn her actual wish, and contract story.
-[X] Generic answer was not enough. We need to know her.
[X] Our basic help is free to her
-[X] we are more than a simple charity
-[X] artificial Grief Seeds are needed
-[X] spreading cleansing and our ability to everyone.
-[X] Does her ideal world look more like Mitakihara?
    -[X] Serious about de-witching
[X] Will she stay with us a while?
[X] Ask details about her powers. What she does with them in her city. Things she wants to try, but hasn't
[X] Other points: we are the good person we want to be. Describe our soul. Meet our friends, and see proof. How does her telepathy work?

Stop: I should not have to do this
I didn't call anyone anything;
I've learned where this rabbit hole goes already, thank you very much.
i should not have to do this First of all, the warning was not for you choosing to call someone something, it was for respecting that choice. Secondly, if you want to argue with a moderator, do so in private messages or better yet, the Ask A Private Question or Appeals forums. I'm going to give you a staff notice under rule 5, and then we'll forget this incident and you can go back to enjoying the quest, yeah?

Point Insertion pt. 22
That's kind of horrifying. She claims she only does that to bad people, but the sheer dismissive unconcern she demonstrates is worrying. And she did say her powers work on non-magical people. The implications are... unambiguous and chilling to the core.

And they think. They think and problem-solve and she says they're not aware?

Thoughts race through your mind, crystal chains sparkling through the dark.

Madokami, but you-

She's so callous about it. Not even flippant, simply callous and dismissive- don't worry about it, she says. If that's the attitude she treats the entire thing with, how can you possibly trust that she did only use her powers on 'bad' people? She used it on non-magical people.

Governments don't treat the death penalty as lightly as she does, let alone Soul-lobotomies.

Do you take her down? It's not going to be an easy thing to do. She takes people's Souls. Can you afford not to do something right here, right now? You could-

You could grab her Gem. She can't summon her shades inside the sphere, so keep her here. Eject her body. She could still act as a Gem, perhaps the most likely of any magical girl you've ever met to be able to do so. Get Mami to summon Homura, because timestop should answer any problems until you can contain her.

And- she has shades guarding her territory. That's what she implied. Can you assume they're not on dead man's switches? You'll need to figure out how to handle that. Kirika's antimagic, maybe. You'd have to convince Homura perhaps, or-

You can't negotiate with her if you open hostilities, but you don't-

She rips people's Souls out and enslaves them. You can't work with someone who does that, but you don't-

You want to be sure. You want to be absolutely sure before you pull the trigger.

Madoka Wished that everything could be fixed. You can't work with her as is, but perhaps you can't condemn her either. Not yet.

You'll hear her out, at least.

You exhale slowly, forcing your heart to slow even as Rionna's lips twitch into a faint smile.

"Y' don't like that, do you?" she says. "Not too many do."

"I..." you wet your lips. "I appreciate you being frank and upfront. I'll try and do the same - and, uh, if I'm monologuing, feel free to interrupt me at anytime?"

Rionna shrugs, eyeing you and uncapping her flask to take another swig.

"I want to create a better world," you say quietly, looking down at your hands. "Your previous actions might have been necessary at the time. I don't..."

Second chances.

"You don't judge me," Rionna says. "Y' have no right to."

Doesn't she deserve a second chance too? For all the things she's done, she's trapped in this system, too. She's done monstrous things. But anything you enable is on your hands, if only by letting her walk away.

"I... look," you say, grimacing. "I want magical girls to work together. I know things right now aren't ideal, but working together, with mutual support - I want there to be justice. Justice, protection, equity, accountability for magical girls so we don't all have to struggle."

And- second chances. You're reminded of Oriko's resignation to her death, and yet she'd still expected to meet you afterwards.

... as a shade, perhaps?

It's nothing but speculation, but it would line up. And it would line up with Oriko's later prediction that she'd be killed by a blonde, green-eyed magical girl, when Rionna is blonde and green-eyed.

Oriko warned you off bringing up Rionna's sister. You can only speculate that her sister died, and Rionna Wished to bring her back.

Rionna takes another sip from her flask, watching you silently.

"The thing is, I can cleanse Soul Gems and Grief Seeds," you say. "I can even empty Grief Seeds out to become Clear Seeds, like this." You dig Hildegarde from your pocket, holding it out for her to see.

Rionna reaches for the Clear Seed, but you shake your head, pulling it back with what you hope is an apologetic smile.

"I... I'm sorry," you say. "I don't know you."

"Mm," Rionna says. "And you do not have trust in me. Understandable. You want me to not do what I do."

"Well..." you say.

"No," Rionna says. "I cannot."

"Cannot, or will not?" you ask, bristling. "Because I've got some ideas-"

"Cannot and will not," Rionna says. She drains her flask, tipping her head back for the last drops, and sets it aside. "You do not trust me. I don't trust you."

"You can stay around, and we can-" you start, only to be cut off.

"Is that all of ye, or just yourself?" Rionna asks, rolling her eyes. "I'm to stay a day and flying back home."

"Ah. Pre-booked tickets?" you say. "But what do you mean by cannot and will not? I mean, I know things can't happen instantly, but I really do have ideas."

"I hold on to the shades, or they fade away," Rionna says, folding her arms. "I've spent years building my collection. It's what I have to use to secure my city."

"I-" She cuts you off again, leaning forward.

"Whisht," Rionna snaps, and smirks. It's not a nice smirk. "I rip people's Souls out, screaming and kicking. It's not pretty and it's not nice. Who knows, maybe I've done it to some 'good people'. Wouldn't know for sure, I wouldn't. But here's how it is: You don't tell me how to do things, and I don't finish a fight neither of us want."

[] How do you react?
[] Ask about the shades
- [] The kind of people she's attacked
- [] Is she sure they're sub-sapient?
[] Try and somehow convince her to release the shades
[] Write-in (word count limit: 150 words)

So I'm just going to chime in here.

SV's rules aside - look. We're here for PMAS, right? Well, look. Sabrina respects people, what they want -or not- to be called. Kyousuke aside - and that was a joke, one not even really directed at him. Just keep that in mind, yeah?
