Ok, posting a pepper plan! I'll generally be available to make changes and/or additions.

[X] Plan Peppers and Pangolins

1. Hazou proposes the possibility of buying peppers from the Pangolins and selling them as an exotic food good in Mist.
  • Exotic spices and whatnot are often expensive, but coming events might make them worth more than normal. The tournament coming up will mean visiting nobles, dignitaries, etc. from across the Elemental Nations, and everyone from common food vendors to high end restaurants will likely want to be able to put something unique on their menu. Pangolin Peppers are something only we can get access to, so we have a market that nobody else can access, so this may be a lucrative market.
  • This shouldn't count as giving our client anything, merely leveraging a unique mercantile connection that your team has access to on behalf of your client. Karina would be using Keiko as a hired agent to negotiate buying the product wholesale from the Summon Realm on her behalf, using Karina's money. (preferably use the gold nuggets and/or jewelry rather than any ryo, since it's uncertain whether those count to our point total anyways)
  • Given the limited time left, we'll want to think of the best places in Mist in which to sell the goods quickly, and we won't want to invest too much in the endeavor.
  • There may be some other goods that could be bought cheap from the Pangolins and sold quickly for more in Mist. Check to see if Keiko has any ideas to add.
2. The team still has a couple tons of ice in storage that could be a potential trade good.
  • Obviously we can't just give this to Karina, as it would be a rules violation. However, the rules don't say anything about selling goods to the client. You would have to sell the ice at a reasonable price to keep it in the spirit of the rules, but you're not likely to be able to sell the ice yourself given your own reputation in Mist, and Leaf's mercantile laws have prevented you from selling it there as you would have liked, so you could give her a good deal on it.
  • Could be sold at the same places we'd sell peppers to.
  • May still be bending the rules to an unacceptable degree. Check Keiko's thoughts on it, and have the team decide whether it'd be worth the risk.
  • Ask Keiko if there might be any political considerations with regards to your group selling ice, without outright saying anything about being the Cold Stone Killers. Karina probably knows anyways, but keeping up the polite fiction that you might not be them is preferable.
3. If the team decides to go with this and continue trading...
  • Use the previously established (valid) protocols for movement and security. Reference.
  • Keep an eye out to see if the yakuza are continuing to keep an eye on you. Even if they are, don't get complacent.
  • Be sure to get written receipts from Karina for any transactions where money and goods change hands between your team and her while buying from the Pangolins, as proof of selling rather than giving.
  • Discuss with the team whether or not it might be a good idea to stop at the end of the day and turn in. Assassination attempts may spike on the final day, as teams who have done poorly may decide they need to eliminate competition to win, so the risk of continuing into day 5 may be greater.

But there's nothing stopping us from selling goods to her, yes?

Karina's likely not going to answer. However, by both a literal interpretation of the rules, and by their spirit, I don't believe that selling things to her would constitute a rules violation as long as they are honest sales where we're not giving her two tons of ice for a single gold nugget or something. And in the case of us buying from the Pangolins, Keiko would just be acting as a hired intermediary on her behalf.

It doesn't look like a fun update to write though. It's just a conversation. Maybe people would like to write sub-plans for if it is doable, and if it isn't doable?

I have no ideas why we're risking more to earn more bonus points.

Well, this is an event where we've got an opportunity to earn a lot of points if we do things right. We've done that, but if this event is any indicator it may well be that the next event is even more point heavy than this one. Having more points gained here will mean a bigger buffer for a failure in the next event.

If we're going to do this, be sure to reuse the security module that the QM can refer to when writing the next update.

@Enjou If you're insistent on doing this, I will honestly request that you have a discussion with Keiko and Noburi first. From the update's POV Hazou's going to launch straight into his ideas, and the last time that happened we got the Mist Drain Incident.

So, disrupt the flow of things to have a conversation with the two of them in private, even though we can't actually leave Karina alone for obvious reasons? I'm not seeing the benefit, especially in light of the fact that nothing mentioned here is a secret.

The fact that summoners can be reverse summoned is not a secret, so that Keiko can go to Pangolin-land isn't secret.
The fact that the Pangolins have spicy peppers isn't secret worthy. It's largely a miscellaneous factoid. (that we've weaponized it with Misterators is another matter, but there's no reason for Hazou to talk about his seals here)
The fact that we've got ice isn't unkown to Mist. They know we're the Cold Stone Killers, and that we've previously tried to sell it in exchange for having an innkeeper spy for us.

We have also since that time voted for Hazou to have more agency in ignoring some of our ideas if they conflict with his knowledge of what is or isn't a clan secret and whatnot.

I get your paranoia as a general thing, but I'm not seeing it as being necessary here.

Does anyone have thoughts on if we should try to scout our other teams/Assassinate them?

Does anyone have thoughts on if we should try to scout our other teams/Assassinate them?

If we have time to do so, then I think trying our hand at it might not be a bad idea. But we couldn't do so as a team, since we'd need to protect Karina. But honestly, there are a few reasons why we might not want to. Particularly...

1. We've been hired as bodyguards, not as assassins. Unless our client has some competition that we become aware of, we're not obligated to assassinate the competition, and could be docked points for risking they client by going and doing a side mission of sorts. Mind you, this would be in the relatively minor range of points.
2. It actually means we've got one less person around protecting the client.
3. Unlike the light night seal event in the Bog of Mild Inconvenience, we don't directly benefit from eliminating other teams from this event. If we're known to be the party to eliminate someone, it could earn more enemies in the next event, and goes against our 'international cooperation is good' goal in some ways. On the other hand, if we show that clever subterfuge and economics is a more profitable path rather than outright aggression against our rivals, then that helps establish the narrative we want.

By the by, is this day three or day four of the event? If day four, we may only want to do additional trading today. I think the assassination attempts will likely increase towards the end of the event, once more people feel secure in regards to their scores.

It's Day 4 I think. There are 48hr remaining in the Exam.

This...I'm disagreeing with this. We know we're the Cold Stone Killers; Mist knows we're the Cold Stone Killers. The rest of the EN? They don't. They can certainly guess, of course. Mist and Leaf are certainly pushing out their own narratives. But if we suddenly have a fuckton of ice to sell, from out of seemingly nowhere? Mist can point to that and say "See? We were right, they are the Cold Stone Killers! Why else would they have so much ice just lying about?". It's not definitive, but it's evidence in their favor. I don't like the idea of ice.

Besides, Pangolin peppers are probably gonna be a smash hit on their own.

Edit:
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT

PEPPERS ARE SPICY

CAN THEY BREAK A HENGE

WOULD SOMEONE EATING THESE PEPPERS AND BEING BURNED BY THE SPICE BE CONSIDERED COLLATERAL DAMAGE

WOULD MIST TRY TO INTERPRET IT AS SUCH

By a literal interpretation of the rules we can't because giving her 'money or its equivalents' in exchange for goods and services is still giving her 'money or its equivalents'.

I mean, I guess they could, but would it really be beneficial to them to do so?

First, consider whether the accusation would actually stick. Jiraiya and ourselves can just deny it, and it's not like we can't say that we simply had the idea of storing and selling ice from the incident - we were missing nin, and hey, we stopped in Snow for a while, so we had opportunity. And accusing the Hokage's clan of such things is going to have a heavy burden of proof attached to it. And the one who died was one of Jiraiya's agents! Why would he adopt someone who murdered one of his agents? The accusation is just utter nonsense!

Further, the fact that the Cold Stone Killers are from Mist is also an embarrassment to Mist, more so if one of the members is the nephew of the current Mizukage. Our identities as the Stone Cold Killers would have long been revealed if it weren't for this factor, and everyone would have believed it because we were missing nin and people believe missing nin to universally be traitorous ne'er-do-wells. Hell, it would endanger their lucrative Hot Springs contracts, which are likely worth far more to them than any political problems that the accusation would bring.

Now, if enough people would be more comfortable with it, I wouldn't terribly mind removing the ice option from the plan. Peppers are likely to be a big hit, as you say.

By a literal interpretation of the rules we can't because giving her 'money or its equivalents' in exchange for goods and services is still giving her 'money or its equivalents'.

By that logic, getting her bag of stuff and handing it to her violates the rules. And the spirit of the rules is pretty clear in intent - it's there to prevent outright bribery.

But they...already...

Mist told Hot Springs the Cold Stone Killers were us. It's how they got the contract.
