God Hazō is so dumb. @Velorien good writing though. If this wasn't a quest I'd be relishing how much potential drama this is will cause. But alas now I have to try to figure how to use this to our advantage.

I meant, can we point out that the whole KILL ALL MIST NINJA narrative is bullshit?

[X] No ARMAGEDDON INITIATIVE
We could, yes; the client believing us...not so much. We're still Genin, low on the political totem pole. Jiraiya's certainly not going to tell us his plans for Mist, especially if he plans on nuking them. You know, since we used to live there and all.

"So you're saying you chose to join Mist's worst enemy entirely on your own initiative? Instead of, say, offering this mysterious bargaining chip to Mist in exchange for amnesty? Or at least choosing a village that wasn't out to kill everyone you knew back home?"

"Well, yes. We had a bargaining chip big enough to get us into Leaf. If we had something valuable enough that Karatachi "Death to all traitors" Yagura would have been willing to take us back in, we'd have had an easier time using it to conquer the elemental nations and establish ourselves as the immortal godkings of all creation."

Alright, real talk. Do we actually want to spend the next 48 hours selling more stuff in order to win harder? Or should we turn in our ~600 points worth of ryo and spend the next two days researching and training (though from the barracks this may be limited). Keep in mind that whatever plan to earn money needs to be doable in 48 hours and has to be worth the non-zero risk of us failing due to successful assassin-gank.

Honestly I'm throwing up a blank with regards to last-minute trading since FMPOV 48 hours isn't enough time for the price of goods to go up.

Damn it, I knew I should've pushed more for voting in my diplomacy plan. We could've blamed everything on Yagura so easily here...

Haha, amnesty for traitors from Yagura, seems like Karina is more optimistic than even myself. And yeah, we gave the thing to the only village that we had some trust in not killing us on the spot, and not immediately starting another world war.

Hm. What is the proctor likely to infer about the nature of the bargaining chip?

Some potential types of bargaining chip: artifact, technique, favor, valuable goods, jutsu knowledge, historical knowledge, location-of-importance knowledge.
Ideally they'd assume the bargaining chip was some sort of blackmail. Which would have to be really good blackmail since it managed to convince the mother fucking Hokage to adopt us into his new clan. Probably something that would get him killed outright if it ever got out.

Realistically I'd expect that we found some ancient Sage-crafted artifact that gives Konoha some sort of massive leg-up in the current arms race. It would explain why Jiraiya adopted us but also why he let us leave Konoha for the Exams (since only a fool would let Genin with knowledge of how to make an uber-weapon leave the safety of their village, right? Right?).

Knowing our luck Karina has already deduced the nature of Skywalkers and will be reporting to the Mizukage about how to craft them.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

See what I fucking mean? A plan only needs two votes to be valid.

Granny Karina raised an eyebrow. "I didn't know ninja were allowed to abandon suicide missions. Isn't the point of a suicide mission that letting a few ninja die in one place will save lots more ninja somewhere else? That's how they did it when I was a little girl."

Ouch. This woman was good.

"He said it wasn't a proper suicide mission," Noburi came to the rescue. "That they'd just picked the ninja they most wanted rid of and decided to throw them in the vague direction of the enemy to cut down numbers before the real attack. If that was true, it wouldn't be a strategic sacrifice—it would be like having us executed even though we didn't do anything wrong. And since a lot of us weren't much liked by the authorities, or by our clans, it sounded way too plausible."

"Hmm," Granny Karina said. "And this jōnin thought he could found his own village with just a handful of particularly unvalued genin and chūnin?"

"There were two other jōnin as well," Noburi said. "Strong ones."

"Aren't jōnin those big super-ninja who can break whole armies with their bare hands and blow up mountains with their mind?" Granny Karina asked. "They sound really valuable. And you say you thought Mist had sent three on a suicide mission?"

"Imagine that you are a fresh young genin, oh so recently graduated from academy, setting out on your first real mission, a mission where you will be acting in support of chuunin who are themselves there to support the jonin. Now imagine that suddenly that mission implodes, and the chuunin and jonin are slaughtering each other in an orgy of blood and death the likes of which you have never even conceived. Are you going to be thinking clearly when the lead surviving jonin tell you it was because they objected to being sent to an ignoble death, to being cleaned out like weeds?
Maybe if we had had a quite moment to think about things, we might have figured it out. But we didn't get a moment, we were running. And then we were being hunted by Leaf nin. And then we were fighting through a goddamn swamp that eats fucking chuunin. We didn't get a proper chance to think about things until we had abandoned the swamp, and by that time, we'd already internalized the story we'd been told as truth."

EDIT: These are the things I imagine Hazou wishing he could have said in hindsight.

I would imagine that we would have 'scared' the client quite a lot, resulting in docked points for being terrifying fucks.

To be honest, the simplest answer is bloodline theft; it's the one thing that Leaf would inheritly consider much more valuable than Mist, and it makes sense for "missing-nin given a single advantage looking for anybody to take them in".

It also gels with her immediate jabs at us for "selling out"; under this interpretation, we defected with our bloodlines as a bargaining chip.

Which does not explain why The Godaime Hokage, Goketsu Jiraiya, adopted us into his clan and put us under his personal protection.

I thought it was determined that we'd get at most a 5% additional profit over the rest of the event from re-investing, making extremely generous assumptions about mist market? And as such it wasn't worth it? I don't see the point in risking 800 points (600 we'd lose plus 200 penalty if client dies) to get maybe additional 30. Even information on other teams isn't worth it, frankly. Easier to buy it from other leaf teams after the event and in the meantime insure our absolutely massive point lead is secured.

As for how we got to be leaf nin, it's frankly none of her business and is a state secret. I'd stick to the version Jiraya publicly stated in Leaf in front of civilians. Maybe emphasise that Mist ideology is clearly empirically not that great if they managed to lose mizukage and most of their jonin in one failed operation. After losing three jonin and a lot of genin to an accidental defection. Really not impressed with the competence of this ideology demonstrated so far.

Wait a minute.

The proctor never said anything about us being allowed to step down. All they said was "You'd be confined to the barracks until the event was over. Can't have you going around assassinating my fellow traders, now can we?"

What if, should we /ff at this point, we'd just be considered DQ'd and lose everything?

We don't have to anwser this question? We could point out though that we joined Leaf because they wouldn't slaughter everyone we cared for, which we know because Leaf could have used the Skywalker to bomb Mist into oblivion (we don't have to say this to her, but Hazou&Co knows this).

I say we disregard what the client want's, go back to the Barracks, take the -20 in the worst case and involve her into a short debate about why joining Leaf was the right decision.

Not familiar with /ff. Since this event is supposed to simulate an escort mission, it stands to reason "early mission completion" should be a thing represented.

If it is, though, there are still some other loose ends to tie up like checking on the Mist ryo conversion.

Do we need to ask for an extension from @eaglejarl? I think we do. Either that, or a lore update.

I'm actually curious about Hazou's motivations for telling as much of the truth as he did, @Velorien. I'm not complaining about him doing so, but I feel like there's some factor I'm missing here. Why didn't he just stick to the official story as announced by Jiraiya? Was he afraid the proctor would react poorly and sabotage us? Or just exhausted from lack of sleep and not thinking straight? Are we going to have Keiko and Noburi screaming at us about the opsec breach next update?

Honestly, I'm surprised he restrained himself from making an impassioned speach about dismantling the ninja village system. That would've been funny as hell.
