These are the papers we have left.

Waaagh energy and magic witnessed during the Expedition. (FADED)
The Black Orc Warboss' worship of Only Gork, and what you saw of the Rogue Idol ritual. (FADED)

Preliminary paper on Aethyric Vitae. (TIMELESS)

Alongside the two paper options from Adela, as we're very unlikely to do more than one paper a turn until we leave that means we likely can't expect more than 4-6 CF income per turn that's assuming a good roll on the paper writing as well, a poor roll can lead to no income that turn.

And the only thing that actually threatens us, that we don't have an answer for, is super-killy and hard-to-kill units like the Hypothetical Bloodthirster.
This has come up before.

Remember, it's Example Bloodthirster. Hypothetical is a Lord of Change. Their counterparts from the remaining two Ruinous Powers are Generic Great Unclean One and Sample Keeper of Secrets. Average Verminlord keeps trying to join their gaming group, but he just hasn't made the cut yet.

I think you misunderstand my point. We will literally have no college favour left if we do this, it will mean we're going negative with regards to the work the Hochlander is doing literally next turn.

it also drastically limits our options with regards to Melkoths spell if we don't learn it in one turn.
We have 38 college favor. The 20 favor item takes a little more than half.

Yes, and all the other things we want - 10 CF to get Melkoth to teach us his Mystifying Miasma and help us develop a spell of our own, 5 CF on another power stone if we use our current one enchanting our robes, 2CF for books, and 1 CF to keep employing the Hochlander - will use up the rest.

I agree with others that have suggested at least waiting until closer to departure before blowing all our favors on magic nukes.

We can always room of Serenity a light(n)ing paper for hopefully at least a couple. And we're on 38 Favour now on the sheet, I think the 20+5+2+10+1 for the Hochlander this turn works out. He's 1CF per turn, I believe, not 2.

It eats exactly 38 favour leaving us with nothing for the next turn assuming a poor roll on the serenity paper we're in the hole a CF next turn and if we don't learn Melkoths that turn then we're going to need to hire him again possibly.

The discussion of Melkoth actually being bankrolled by Belegar has happened few pages past. Pickle said he remembers BoneyM mentioning it, and i tend to trust Pickle. TNE is currently hunting for quote i think.

What would a chest of shadows do, anyway?

I suppose you could invent something derived from Mindhole that'd grab whatever memories of classified stuff you thought about while it was open and make you forget them until the next time you open the chest.

Boney confirmed that we can have Belegar pay for Melkor... so our situation is not so bad.

CF is there to be spent. Even if we end up in debt for a turn or two there's enough of a research backlog to clear it and Mathilde's standing has to be high enough that her credit is capital G Good.

Acktualy, pikkle mearly stated that he remembers TNE saying such a thing, but that he could not find any such WOG himself:
@TotallyNotEvil asserts that Boney confirmed that the College Favour cost of hiring Melkor to teach us Battle Magic was billable to the Expedition because we're committed to going. I couldn't find this, but I did not look very hard; TNE, if you remember keywords from the conversation, could you dig up the citation?
And TNE also admits that he cannot find any such exact quote, and instead asked BoneyM to clarify:
After a quick search of posts I tagged Boney, I think I am going off that question asked by another player.
@BoneyM To clarify: as we are volunteering and self improvement counts as job actions, do we get job-billable expenses for things like tutors?
Which he has yet to do. So at this point making a budget decision based around the idea that Melkoth will be free is premature. So I would argue that the 20 CF purchase should be postponed till we get Word of God. As even if that happens to late to swing this vote, we will have plenty of opportunities.

Boxed shadows of a specific location could possibly be used as an enchanting catalyst to bring out qualities of that place?

That or Mathilde was making a joke. That said assuming she was being serious how do you jibe that with your posting earlier talking about Ulgu doing things by blurring boundaries because I can't see how that lets you literally box shadows, this isn't a gotcha question I want to understand your perspective of how Mathildes magic works.

Chaos Wastes: Antiquarian Dwarven (100gc, 2DF)
Dark Lands: Extensive + Esoteric Imperial (200gc)
The Great Steppes: Extensive Imperial, Extensive Dwarven (200gc)
Marauder Tribes: Extensive Imperial, Extensive Dwarven (200gc)
Chaos Dwarves: Extensive Imperial, Extensive and Antiquarian Dwarven (250gc, 2DF)
Karaz Ankor: Antiquarian Dwarven (100gc, 2DF)
Ulgu: Esoteric Imperial (50gc, 2CF)
Enchantment +4 - Extensive and Antiquarian
Getting this to +5 would help with the robes a bit, I'd assume. An additional cost of 50gc and 2 CF.

Question if we are planning on making our Shadow Riders wouldn't it be a good idea to get a book on the specific type of apparition we plan to bind?

Ulgu interacts with things which are unclear, this extends to its major manifestations:
-Fog and mist are
--Neither liquid nor vapor, with qualities of both.
--They disrupt perception, distancing what is percieved from what is real. Where shadows normally cannot be cast on air, fog gives shadows form.

-Shadows are:
--Neither light nor darkness, but where the light would be.
--Not the creature, phenomenon or object, but identified with and cannot exist without its origin.

-Thoughts, perception and memories are:
--Neither real nor unreal, they exist, but cannot normally be perceived nor interacted with.

Ulgu does best when manipulating such uncertainties, hence Ulgu primarily works through such mediums.
It can create things that are inherently uncertainties wholesale out of Ulgu. Darkness for instance, or Shadows.
It can create uncertainties through using Ulgu to suppress or break down definitions between things that exist.
It can twist the definitions of the uncertainties, to make a shadow perform like things that the shadow resembles, or use them as a vector to propagate their other effects.

That said its unlikely that said chest contains any meaningful shadows, as without the presence of magic to nudge the rules around, the shadows in the box would have long lost any such qualities in favor of "Shadow of this box" even if it wasn't opened.

It we also know that belief shapes Warpstuff, even aside from embodiment in specific Winds. See Apparitions.
I could see enough belief that the sealed box contains the shadows of Blutdorf, and the time spent capturing those shadows, meaning that it does in fact contain those shadows. Perhaps, even retaining some associations to the building that cast the shadow.
Shadow is the gate through which the fog passes and changes state, after all.
A gate to that building, perhaps?
