Except when you also have an army, in which case enemies that are 'helpless' and enemies that are 'dead' are basically synonymous.

And for X favor, the more people it kills, the less hard it kills any one person. And the only thing that actually threatens us, that we don't have an answer for, is super-killy and hard-to-kill units like the Hypothetical Bloodthirster. That's the problem we need to solve.
It doesn't make enemies helpless, it makes them slightly weaker. It's broad enough that on a statistical level a unit can beat another unit slightly easier than without it, but you seem to be conflating the weakest grey battle magic spell with the one that causes enemies to all but lay down and die, which is the hardest type of cataclysmic battle magic.

Also, for any other wind, maybe. Aqshy doesn't care about that proposed paradigm. This is merely fiendishly complex.
Conflagration of Doom: Ultimate fire AOE, repeats each round until there is nothing alive in the area of effect. All Wizards in a 5-mile radius can feel casting of this spell and your Patriarch will fuck you up if you do it without good reason.
Singe and Burn, Until It Is Done.

Aqshy megapurchaase

cons

-We lack the favour
-It is extremely circumstantial.

Pros

-We can cook stuff before we take them and eat them

Verdict

no.

[X] [COLLEGE] No purchase

Let's leave buying stuff for later, we can do the papers we want and then be certain of how much we can afford after we try learning battle magic.
Now, i would love a "things go BOOM" thingy for both work and free time, but it's not immediate priority.

[X] [COLLEGE] Big Lore of Fire explosion item (20 CF), ulgu power stone (5 CF)

I'm looking forward to us whipping this thing out at our spell range to practice with while the Ducklings watch.

I find the argument "let's buy it later" rather shortsighted. We don't know, how long does it take to make one. If we want one to be delivered before the expedition, we should order one as soon as possible.

It's not a minor trinket that can be made on the spot

You have just demonstrated why BoneyM needs to clarify, because I don't buy that (in either sense of the word).

Many people are planning other favor expenditures beyond that, like getting Melkoth to come and help teach us his signature Battle Magic, and there's more CF needed for the upkeep on the Hochlander.

We're spending at most 38 CF this turn, already pricing in Melkoth, the Hochlander, etc. We have 38CF already, with more on the way from Adela's papers, and there's no real penalty for dipping into the negatives for a single turn. I'm not really concerned about it.

"Attacks the combat capabilities" seems pretty clear.

Those affected by the miasma get better worse at fighting, so your army can walk up and have an easier time at killing them.
But the Army still has to do the legwork.

With Conflagration of Doom, that's not the case.

We have plenty of evidence that Ulgu is pretty bad at directly killing things. A fiendishly complex Ulgu spell (Shadow knives), to match what an Aqshy apprentices can do.
So i'm not surprsed at all that a FC Aqshy spell is much killier than an Ulgu BM spell. Especially since it's the hardest Aqshy FC spell, being compared to the easiest Ulgu BM.

Indeed, Miasma is a great spell: cheap to cast, inordinately effective at helping you win the battle.

But one thing it does not do for you is win it by itself. Just makes it easier for you to do so.

We very much have the favour. We have 38 CF, this costs 25. I don't see the problem.
25 favour for the college buy vote, 10 for melkoth, 1 for hochlander upkeep, 2 for the current library vote.
leaving us with nothing at all.

upcoming expenditures:
2 CF more for esoteric enchanting books in preparation for our armor.

I find it ironic that I, who tried to champion for a Big Explodey Item way back when we were still fighting in K8P and had all those peaks to take, y'know, in case of Rat-themed Balrogs or just enormous mobs of orcs shanking us in the hallway, now am not super thrilled by it.

Mostly because of the staff. I want to make Cloudkill or Choking Fog.

Given the apparition knowledge we traded for, I'd like to make a Horrors in the Mist spell.

Yea, the staff makes spending college favour for a spell of killyness wrong headed, we should spend favour on acquiring assistance with creating our own fog based battle magics that can be killy. Now that we have the staff it's silly to splurge on an item that will be less useful than a real battle mage when we can make our own battle magic that's safe.

Sorry, question: if we explicitly proposed to Dragon to talk more about Dawi theology, why aren't we buying more subject matter books? Mathilde seems to only have basics.
