I'll join the chorus, and say I'm very happy the RoW codification succeeded. The value of a surprise army hitting you across what would have been near-impassible terrain cannot be underestimated, and while I doubt others can match Mathilde's 'provide footing for thousands of soldiers at once' feat even a tenth of that is still going to be a nasty shock.

@Boney I trust your opinion quite a bit, so i would love a recommendation right now. I'm at a library and want to pick out a terry pratchet book. Blink of the screen, color of magic, the long series, raising steam, good omens, reaper man, or guards guards?

I predict that for these first few years the spell is going to hit hard and swing a lot of battles as enemy forces adapt to it. Afterwards the effect will be lesser but still present as it is a constant worry for enemy troops and a tool in the Empire's toolbox.

Think about it, the enemy commander now has to consider what would previously be a safe flank to always have the potential of a sudden cavalry charge.

Sweet Ranald, she's what, 16 and already pushing magic 3?
I do wonder how many spells we can have her get through before she goes on her journey. She'll hit 3 next turn; depending on rolls she might get to 4 if we keep her another year or two. And if she gets the windreader trait, she could very plausibly hit 5 before she leaves, which is bonkers. That's the level of a solid though unexceptional magister.

Honestly, my gremlin brain is thinking, "Delay a little for the full spell bonus, hand her a staff, teach her a bunch of BM spells, and only then send her out". Very dwarfish take on expectations towards an apprentice. Does make me wonder: Could we teach our self-created BM spells to Eike? Because those require permission, but it would be a little strange for Mathilde to have to get permission for teaching her own spells. Even more so if it's a spell that hasn't even been codified yet, and so doesn't have an "official" difficulty.

As an LM, she could probably get way with it, especially if it works. But it would probably get her a side-eye, and some consideration whether she might not be unsuited to having apprentices.

To be clear, teaching Eike BM spells is dumb and wildly irresponsible and we shouldn't do it. It would just be hilarious.

I can't get the image of a decked out Eike who at this point can beat up anyone short of veteran battle mages and LMs, reluctantly let out the door after Panoramia gave Mathilde a stern talking to. Kragg has come out from his work shop to console Mathilde about the pains of doing things Properly in this world with grandfatherly grumping. Still a little early, but respectable enough for such a youngling, and really others should take her example to heart and at least try for standars *grumble grumble*. Eike meanwhile is just wondering what she's even supposed to do now? Maybe open diplomatic and trade relations with the magic frogs?
I just want focus some attention on this.

Not to say I'm unhappy with this result, but I do think we should take home the lesson that we should be treating the Gambler as less "+20s on die rolls" and more as "make us luckier". The +20s are only a mechanical representation of what it is actually supposed to be doing, after all.

In general, we get better results by prioritizing in-universe/narrative logic over game mechanic logic, and similarly, when thinking about The Gambler we should be thinking about where luck(aka extremely subtle and well placed divine intervention) is most impactful, rather than about where +20s are most impactful.
I agree, I just want to note that Luck is very broad, so it's not that easy to tell where it's not applicable. To some degree, having a good idea for how to do something is also a matter of luck.
Mathilde was disappointed that wasn't the case.
She's written so many things by now that her own contributions should get her library +1 in Puns.

(also, uh, I think the winning plan didn't have Cadaeth and Tochter on the tributary action - the two variants that came second and third did. Not that I'm complaining)

I think Tochter got called in because she was the natural point of contact for getting a Jade in after Roswita said she wanted Jades, but I don't actually know how Cadaeth got in there.

I guess Erengard had cheaper charcoal than Salkalten because Erengard is a big port with existing infrastructure? Eike mentions the possibility of setting up "charcoaling and shipping infrastructure in Ostland", so I guess Salkalten isn't currently up to the task of providing and shipping the charcoal in the quantities we require for reasonable prices?

Salkalten currently only imports the charcoal it needs, while Erengrad supplies it to something like a third of Kislev. Salkalten has the potential to be a better choice after substantial investment and construction but Erengrad can start shipping today.

Oh. Well that hurts. Does it mean that Sounds are out of Eike's grasp for the near future, or can she have hope of learning it later provided she stops rolling badly?

It just means she failed this time, she can try again.

I don't get it, who are these "almost-local specialists in frozen water."?

Ice Witches. They have a prophecy that says one day a male Ice Witch is going to permanently damage Ice Magic in some way, so they get extremely nasty about interlopers.

Universitäts quarter instead? The direct translation would be something like Universitätsviertel, and this just seems weird to me.

In canon it's referred to interchangeably as either 'the Universität' or 'the Universität District'.

Guards Guards was where I started way back in the early 2000s and I think it's a good point to get into Discworld, it's the start of a new PoV character within the series - it's a riff on police media in general. Reaper Man is the start of another one, about what happens if Death starts getting interested in the lives he normally only appears at the end of. Good Omens is excellent, but it's a modern-day story with Neil Gaiman instead of part of the Discworld series.

Colour of Magic is technically the first book in the entire Discworld series, but it's before he got his stride and is a lot more of a parody of fantasy than the actual world the series it grew into so it's hard to recommend it. The Long series is some interesting sci fi, but it began towards the end of Terry's life and it gets harder and harder to spot his contribution to it as it goes on.

Even more so if it's a spell that hasn't even been codified yet, and so doesn't have an "official" difficulty.

If everything turns out okay nobody will complain, but there's going to be a lot of very serious questions asked if it leads to Eike exploding herself.

They have a single letter that reads "try it and we'll kill your entire fucking College".
Not surprising, they're Ice Witches not Nice Witches.
See above re: institutions that would burn the College and salt the ashes if they even thought about it.
Do they not even have a +1 for the Widow and the Lady from buying basic non-Extensive Imperial texts on them? I would've thought they'd at least buy some books about them for internal theoretical speculation about them even if actually utilising that knowledge is off limits.

@Boney

How long is Eike's apprenticeship with us generally expected to last?

A certain number of years? Just until we deem her ready to become a Journeywoman? Or does she need to pass some specific milestone?

mmmm, out of all those socials, I'd be interested in....

[] Sofia

I'll admit to being curious about what kind of person she is now compared to canon (not that I know much)

[] Gretel

I ain't giving up on Gretel. I'll fight to the very end for favourite duckling

[] Skull River Ambush

Just passing interest

Typical Apprenticeship is ten years, of which three had ellapsed when Mathilde took her on, so typically another five or six years would be normal. It's entirely up to Mathilde to decide when she's ready, though.

I don't remember whether any are prominent right from the start but based on what I remember about you the subseries starting with Guards Guards should have some neat stuff for you.

After giving it some thought, I was shocked they didn't have any Geography books for us. Then I checked and we already have Extensive Imperial on the Old World. So it makes sense. Though part of me feels like their books might still be worthwhile somehow given how they interact with the land? As well as magic letting one explore places most people would stay the hell away from, or be unable to reach.

What an incredibly delightful update full of dabbing on various haters, both concrete (Elementalists) and abstract (Stirlandian biases, logistics maps, Ulgu being a temperamental little snot). I am particularly taken with Eike's solution to the charcoal problem. Huge props to whoever thought of it. That charcoal route might end up actually surviving after the Route of Way gets made, because the Nordlanders aren't doing it to be profitable, they're doing it to avert bad things. And I do strongly support anything that de-escalates local tensions between the Eonir and Nordlanders in a way that doesn't lead to deaths or territorial infringements on either side.
Guards Guards was where I started way back in the early 2000s
Are you me? I got loaned that book at summer camp in the early aughts and stayed up all night reading it.

Anyway, social turn wise, there are a lot of good new options, but I'd urge folks not to let novelty bias reign too supreme. There's some good older stuff that is worth checking out: the Gold College's followup has had years to churn, for instance, and I'd love to see what they made of the skaventech. And I think the Middenland and Nordland actions would make a really cool pair to do, to figure out what's up with the cult of Ulric and the Eonir.

(Also, I will point out that the canal really should have been finished by now. We got "perhaps five years if nothing goes wrong" in 2483. It's 2490 and we've heard zero news. Something is fucky.)

So, all in all, I think I'm voting like this:

[ ] Middenland
[ ] Nordland
[ ] The Black Water Canal
[ ] Druchii Diplomats
[ ] Gold College

By the time Mathilde is done with Eike, she'll be able to cast all the moderately complicated spells and have magic 5 :V

"Now, you are ready to go reclaim a Karak"

...y'know, there IS a campaign for that going on, and I doubt it's going to be done by the time she's ready to go Journeying. I bet she could get a spot there without too much trouble on the strength of being trained by Mathilde.
