The ice witches of KislevI don't get it, who are these "almost-local specialists in frozen water."?
I predict that for these first few years the spell is going to hit hard and swing a lot of battles as enemy forces adapt to it. Afterwards the effect will be lesser but still present as it is a constant worry for enemy troops and a tool in the Empire's toolbox.I'll join the chorus, and say I'm very happy the RoW codification succeeded. The value of a surprise army hitting you across what would have been near-impassible terrain cannot be underestimated, and while I doubt others can match Mathilde's 'provide footing for thousands of soldiers at once' feat even a tenth of that is still going to be a nasty shock.
I do wonder how many spells we can have her get through before she goes on her journey. She'll hit 3 next turn; depending on rolls she might get to 4 if we keep her another year or two. And if she gets the windreader trait, she could very plausibly hit 5 before she leaves, which is bonkers. That's the level of a solid though unexceptional magister.
I agree, I just want to note that Luck is very broad, so it's not that easy to tell where it's not applicable. To some degree, having a good idea for how to do something is also a matter of luck.I just want focus some attention on this.
Not to say I'm unhappy with this result, but I do think we should take home the lesson that we should be treating the Gambler as less "+20s on die rolls" and more as "make us luckier". The +20s are only a mechanical representation of what it is actually supposed to be doing, after all.
In general, we get better results by prioritizing in-universe/narrative logic over game mechanic logic, and similarly, when thinking about The Gambler we should be thinking about where luck(aka extremely subtle and well placed divine intervention) is most impactful, rather than about where +20s are most impactful.
She's written so many things by now that her own contributions should get her library +1 in Puns.
I think this is more that the idea 'seen but not heard' step/basterd child is very religious. (In Catholicism anyways)The +1 Piety is interesting. Did growing up surronded by suffering give Eike an appreciation for Shallya?
(also, uh, I think the winning plan didn't have Cadaeth and Tochter on the tributary action - the two variants that came second and third did. Not that I'm complaining)
I guess Erengard had cheaper charcoal than Salkalten because Erengard is a big port with existing infrastructure? Eike mentions the possibility of setting up "charcoaling and shipping infrastructure in Ostland", so I guess Salkalten isn't currently up to the task of providing and shipping the charcoal in the quantities we require for reasonable prices?
Oh. Well that hurts. Does it mean that Sounds are out of Eike's grasp for the near future, or can she have hope of learning it later provided she stops rolling badly?

Universitäts quarter instead? The direct translation would be something like Universitätsviertel, and this just seems weird to me.
@Boney I trust your opinion quite a bit, so i would love a recommendation right now. I'm at a library and want to pick out a terry pratchet book. Blink of the screen, color of magic, the long series, raising steam, good omens, reaper man, or guards guards?
Does make me wonder: Could we teach our self-created BM spells to Eike? Because those require permission, but it would be a little strange for Mathilde to have to get permission for teaching her own spells. Even more so if it's a spell that hasn't even been codified yet, and so doesn't have an "official" difficulty.
Not surprising, they're Ice Witches not Nice Witches. They have a single letter that reads "try it and we'll kill your entire fucking College".
Do they not even have a +1 for the Widow and the Lady from buying basic non-Extensive Imperial texts on them? I would've thought they'd at least buy some books about them for internal theoretical speculation about them even if actually utilising that knowledge is off limits.See above re: institutions that would burn the College and salt the ashes if they even thought about it.
Guards guards or Mort are the usual answers for the best 'first Pratchett book'.@Boney I trust your opinion quite a bit, so i would love a recommendation right now. @Boney
How long is Eike's apprenticeship with us generally expected to last?
A certain number of years? Just until we deem her ready to become a Journeywoman? Or does she need to pass some specific milestone?
I don't remember whether any are prominent right from the start but based on what I remember about you the subseries starting with Guards Guards should have some neat stuff for you.@Boney I trust your opinion quite a bit, so i would love a recommendation right now. Perhaps some extra geography in support of the above subjects?
Are you me? I got loaned that book at summer camp in the early aughts and stayed up all night reading it.
By the time Mathilde is done with Eike, she'll be able to cast all the moderately complicated spells and have magic 5
"Now, you are ready to go reclaim a Karak"
Wait when did Eike miscast hard enough to pick up a wind mark? Or is this just me being confused over word choice? As Eike's grasp of Ulgu is bolstered by it having left its mark upon her
