Apparently, the Chaos Dwarfs in TW:WH3 are trying to get at Hashut's blood with their gigantic drill, which sounds based. Not sure yet if its like, consensual or Student Surpasses The Master kinda deal but. On brand.
Given their whole thing is unchecked ambition, greed and tyrannical evil, it sounds more like a case of "We can finally exploit this resource and become the Supreme rulers of all, without being beholden to our gods will!" So definitely the latter.

[CANON] Notes of a Nordland trader on the goods purchased from the Eonir - iggyfan

Notes of a Nordland trader on the goods purchased from the Eonir

Amber – High quality and relatively cheap. From what my contacts tell me the Eonir have a functionally unlimited supply of amber, being able to produce it through magical means. While the supply is bottomless the output is limited however, something many merchants in Salkalten are grateful for. Laurelorn amber is much prized by jewelers for it generally lacks insects but are of little value to certain naturalists for the same reason.

Bezoars – Valued by the nobility for their ability to neutralize poisons and certain magisters for magical properties relating to the same. Prices are good, resale prices are better. The best can be obtained in Marienburg or Erengrad. Contrary to what some might expect the dwarfs have little demand for bezoars as the poisons they have to deal with are rarely ingested.

Candles – Within Laurelorn Forest lives an elf who is quite probably the finest chandelier in the Empire. This individual and their apprentices have been making money hand over fist producing and selling spermaceti candles of the highest quality. Notable customers for these candles include the Ar-Ulric, the High Matriarch of the Cult of Mannan, and the Grand Theogonist, as well as half the Elector Counts of the Empire. However I advise caution when informing potential customers about their virtues when said customers are dwarfs. They tend to get argumentative, potentially violently so, if one claims an elf makes a illuminant that is superior to their dawi made equivalents.

Castoreum – The castoreum glands of Laurelorn beavers are significantly larger than those of ordinary Old World beavers, though that is only to be expected of a creature five times the size of a normal specimen. Best prices can be obtained from the Gold Order, with various perfumers of Marienburg, Reikland and Wissenland taking second place. Dwarfs will generally either outright refuse to purchase Laurelorn castoreum or offer prices so low as to be barely worth the effort of transporting cargos of it to their holds.

Furs – Along with lumber furs form the bulk of the goods sold by the Eonir to Imperial merchants. Of the highest quality, naturally, and many possess unusual properties. For example, the pelts of Laurelorn beavers are nearly completely waterproof and much larger than those of ordinary beavers besides. More than a few officers of Nordland's armies have paid a premium for the ability to stay warm and dry during even the most torrential rains.

Glassware – Mostly forest glass, but forest glass of a quality unheard of in the realms of men. Some examples are as clear as crystal with none of the green tinge that characterizes ordinary forest glass. Others are as red as fresh roses or as blue as the sea. All of it is significantly stronger than ordinary glass. Sells for high prices in major markets across the Empire.

Honey – The highest quality available for sale anywhere. Supposedly possesses minor magical properties. Tastes superb, can last years without crystalizing. Supply is limited however as the Eonir harvest only part of a hive's honey, leaving most of it for the bees, and keep much of what they harvest for themselves.

Jewelry – Of the very high quality that is to be expected of elven craftsmanship. As beautiful as they are pricey and every example I have encountered is very pleasing to the eye. Since regular trade with the Eonir has begun some years ago Eonir jewelry has become a popular fashion statement throughout the Northern Trident.

Lacquer – Laurelorn forest is to my knowledge the only source of true lacquer in the Empire and one of the only two in the whole of the Old World along with Athel Loren. From what the elves tell me they struck a bargain with trees of a certain species centuries ago. The trees get especial treatment such as quality fertilizer and magical "healing" and in exchange the elves get a supply of lacquer sap. How exactly one negotiates with trees is unknown to me and the one time I'd asked I was simply told that it was beyond my understanding.[1]

Lacquerware – Very very fine. Even moderate quality Eonir lacquerware is comparable to some of the best coming from Nippon. The best (that the Eonir are willing to sell) surpasses them. Floral decorations are a common motif, as are hunting scenes. The decorations are either painted on the lacquer before they receive their final coating or are made of ground gold, green gold, silver, red gold, and such. The latter examples naturally fetch better prices.

Laurelorn lumber – The highest quality lumber in the Empire and second highest quality of any sourced in the Old World as a whole after that- illegally and supremely dangerously- harvested from Athel Loren. Much of it is far too fine to be wasted on architectural purposes and instead is used for high quality carpentry. Since regular trade has begun Nordlander carpenters have managed to wrestle a reputation as producing some of the finest woodwork in the Empire, much to the grumbling of Dwarfs and the (apparent) bemusement of the Eonir. Laurelorn lumber has also been a boon for Nordland's shipyards. While the province has no lack of timber for its shipwrights much of that from Laurelorn is stronger and better at absorbing shock and stress than that from ordinary trees.

Medicinal herbs – The Forest of Laurelorn provides a great bounty of medicinal herbs. From rare herbs such as moonflower to trinkwort to common ones such as valerian and salwort the Eonir sell them to Imperial merchants who in turn sell them to herbalist throughout the Empire.

Pearls – Of the highest quality. The Eonir offer perfectly spherical pearls in a quantity that is essentially impossible to obtain naturally. It is widely suspected that the Eonir possess the ability to induce oysters to produce pearls through some secret method. Most assume the method to be magic, though once an elf deep in his cups told me that it wasn't before his compatriots told him to be quiet. Regardless of how the elves produce them such high quality pearls have become significantly more common in the northern Empire since regular trade started.

Potions - Magic and extremely expensive, so few merchants are both willing and able to deal in them. Nonetheless those who are make superb profits due to the higher quality of elven potions compared to those produced by the Colleges of Magic, or at the very least the perception of higher quality.

Soap – A pure luxury product. Much higher quality than Imperial soaps or even Estalian and Arabyan examples. Extremely long lasting, with a pleasant odor and even taste if certain rumors can be believed. The best prices for it can be found in Marienburg, Reikland and Wissenland.

Whetstones – Probably the finest available for purchase anywhere. Blades sharpened on Eonir whetstones will stay sharper for longer compared to even dwarf whetstones. A luxury reserved only for the wealthy. The prices the Eonir charge are expensive, but they can be resold for even higher prices. In addition, they are excellent gifts to curry favor with knightly orders, powerful nobles, the various cults, and their warrior priests and so on and so forth.

Wine – Widely considered the archetypical good obtained from trade with any variety of elves, Eonir wines are a luxury product reserved only for the wealthy. Produced from grapes, hawthorns, honey, blackberries, and more. Near universally possess dominant floral and fruity notes that are superbly balanced against each other. Very expensive with a single bottle of Eonir wine fetching the same price as a cask of Bugman's New.

[1] Certain safety standards should be maintained when transporting and handling cargos of Laurelorn lacquer as it is a potent irritant that causes rashes shortly after contact with skin. These rashes produce itchiness, inflammation and in severe cases a burning sensation. They will typically clear up within fourteen days, though severe cases can produce scars.

If anyone wants to make use of anything contained in this omake for their own WHFB quest/fic, feel free to do so.

@iggyfan, these have been great! Thanks for continuing to contribute these.

The post has me thinking about how optimistic I am regarding future relations between the Trident and Laurelorn. Their military aid has been crucial. I get the impression that without their spellcasters in Salkalten the scales may have been tipped too far against us for the battle to have gone the favorable way it his so far. Not too mention fighting alongside Stephan in Nordland.

The citizens of those provinces will likely not soon forget how they came to our aid.

@torroar Ah, had just remembered a question I had had about Alisa and Agatha's examination of the various Undead around the world!

Namely: the Isle of Wights on Albion!

... They can't get there -- anymore, anyway -- of course. But. You know who was there? Magnus, Mena, and Reinhardt!

Perhaps Reinhardt especially, if the guy was willing to poke around and ask the Albish about the Wights and such. Because that boy was Verenan to the core, and tried to understand -- and record -- as much as possible, about everything possible, whenever and wherever he could.

So. Is there a chance that Alisa, Agatha, and Elspeth, come visit Reinhardt -- and/or the others, though possibly Reinhardt would be the best option -- about the Albish form of undead?

As soon as they find out about that whole thing, yeah. They've sort of been out of the Imperial loop for a while, after all. It'll be quite a thing for them to figure what has happened since they went globe trotting.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, fellow dynamic alcoholics!

The day where you drink like an average Ostlander on...any given day.

Try not to drink like a Hohenzollern, though. We don't have jade wizards to help with imbibing THAT much.

I had a thought about holidays, looked at the post below...

  1. Wellentag -- "Workday"
  2. Aubentag -- "Levyday"
  3. Marktag -- "Marketday"
  4. Backertag -- "Bakeday"
  5. Bezahltag -- "Taxday"
  6. Konistag -- "Kingday"
  7. Angestag -- "Startweek"
  8. Festag -- "Holiday"

And I looked elsewhere, and I didn't find any mention of local days of celebration/remembrance. Is there anything that's unique to Ostland?

Drucchi Wines - Unavailable. From chilled Ice-Wines and rumored sacred Blood-Wine of Khaine, there are a variety of wines made by the Druchii, but they are not traded outside of Naggaroth.

Ladies and gentlemen, while protecting Ostland, outright eliminating or at least grievously crippling the Druchii force, rescuing slaves and prisoners onboard the Arks and ensuring as many of our people and allies survive as possible are all important objectives, I do believe the acquisition of any Druchii alcohol (sans the blood stuff, thank you very much) should be made an equally important goal. :V

Something to look forward to in the show's next episode, titled Raiders of the Lost Druchii Ark!

Indeed! We have to get ourselves some of that good stuff and if it's really good we might even start raiding the Druchii to get more or take some of them prisoner and pay them to make more wine as Sigmar wills it!

So this got me looking at the alcohol list.
Nehekharan Beer - Unavailable currently. Hyper-Rare, even more than original vintage pre-Burning Brewery Bugman's Best. Only a trio of caches have ever been recovered from Nehekhara, and featured in the private collections of the Wissenland explorers who recovered them...
I want me some of that!
before the entire estate was emptied of life with only husks of the people left behind and the caches gone missing.
So... Anyway.

I never realized that detail but....

Either the vampires really wanted it, or those beers might have been something else.

After what was done to Eldyra?

NO.

Their booze will instead be offered the greatest insult and show of contempt available to an Ostlander: poured into the sea, the ground, whatever is available, for being just as worthless as its brewers.

Pfft. The druchii would rather pour it into the oceans themselves than have humans steal from them and enjoy their stuff. Druchii are the ones who take, not humans.

@torroar Btw what happened to ol Karl Todbringer? Iirc he was sorta have exiled or something, living like a recluse. Is he alright? Last i remember, dude was depressed.

Either the vampires really wanted it, or those beers might have been something else.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Tomb Kings send someone up to get their booze back. Don't the Lizardmen hound grave robbers to the emd of the globe to get their fancy trinkets back? It's probably similar with the Tomb Kings.

Hm...

Almost disappointed that none of the Hohenzollern herd is named Lara. Could have gotten some nice Tomb Raider (heh) sidestories with Lara von Hohenzollern. But that's probably already covered by Agatha and Alisa.

Alexandra von Hohenzollern actually covered that before her younger sisters. The entire Tomb of Shoika was literally a Tomb Raider-esque adventure. Two competing archaeological parties, one a small party and one with hundreds of mercenaries, strange creatures and beings, wild and esoteric puzzles, seeing spooky ice spirits - literal frozen moments of time and history - that were trapped/made to animate and act out important and grand moments from Shoika's life and that of her mother Miska the Slaughterer and their tribe, cataloguing the journey into Kislev and their distancing from the rest of the Chaos tribes of the Eastern Steppes. Plus having to fight the Guardians of the Tomb, other frozen spirit entities+golem creatures of ice and metal. Finally, there was a grand mega cinematic moment where she claimed Shoika's Sapphire, the last of the Bohka merc crew arrived with their own Ice Witch, and the Thundertusk itself was awakened from where it had slumbered all this time, culminating in a running battle against the remaining Bohka mercenaries, the raging spirits of the Tomb, and the Thundertusk itself, all while fleeing from the Tomb and down the mountainside into the hidden valley amidst a massive avalanche on a conjured heavy platform of ice.

EDIT: Extending further, as noted in the Rumor Mill post I refound and reposted below, by her temporarily taming the beast and using it against a bunch of greenskins.

Ah, here we go, found it. This was...2328 IC, Turn 24. From Jan 26, 2018.

A Song of Ice And Dust: No one is quite sure what exactly happened, and those that have survived do not speak much of it at the moment. But there are as of yet some things still known. Two separate parties of both Bohka and Romanov colors were sighted practically sprinting out of the Eastern Oblast towards the mountains to the east, with the latter party smaller and just barely in the lead of their counterparts. Both ascended into the frozen peaks, and were not seen for several weeks. Then, a series of avalanches were felt for many miles around, both within the mountains themselves and unto the plains as well. At one point, hunters report hearing the horrifying and bowels-emptying noise of some great beast scream out through the valleys and ring along the mountainsides. Then, striding out of the mountains, came some sort of creature of utter destruction and frozen might that battered its way down into the eastern forest to fall upon a goblin warband that was flanking the Grand Army. It was the one atop it, however, who was truly shocking. Alexandra von Hohenzollern, a known agent of the Tzarina, rode atop the beast, letting loose great blasts of ice shards and crafting cutting sheets of ice to funnel the greenskins directly into the mouth of her erstwhile mount. Only once the battle at the time was done and the beast had feasted on simply egregious amounts of meat from the fallen did it turn away, and trundled back into the mountains in an obscuring cloud of snow and dust. Later, in the coming weeks, did three more come back down from the mountains, a small party of Romanov mercenaries – a dwarf Slayer, a wandering Ulrican priest, and of all things an elf of Laurelorn - who had been thought dead along with the rest of their archaeological excursion of whom Alexandra von Hohenzollern was part. Regardless of what occurred in those mountains, the truth is known. Battered, bloodied, but unbroken, did her servant present to Kattarin the Bloody – who had been commanding the battle – a great artifact of the past yet returned to the hands of Kislev: Shoika's Sapphire, a great talisman of power and symbol of authority crafted in the days of the first Khan-Queens, whose deeds are carved into the very foundation of the nation itself. The gleaming jewel of purest eternal ice and malice was made by the daughter of the Slaughterer herself, who sought to eclipse the accomplishments of her mother in doing so. Now, what was held in the hands of the first Tzarina of all Kislev has fallen into the hands of the Romanovs, returned from history to the present. A second expedition is already being readied to return to the rediscovered Tomb of Shoika, where it had been constructed such that the ancient ruler could forever gaze out upon the land which she had ruled.

god that fucking OWNS. Part of what ive always loved about your work is how dynamic you make the setting feel, all the ways in which it feels like Things Are Happening without us, and this is a prime example

Ah yes, no words quite so saddening as "Temporarily taming 'insert giant magical mount/murderbeast here'". I imagine life would be a lot easier for alexandra if she had a nice fluffy Thundertusk at her side.

Turn 38 Rumor Mill

*COUGH*

Ice And Darkness In Bestial Form: It has been rumored, of course, that the Royal Aide to the Tzarina, known far and wide as Alexandra von Hohenzollern, daughter of the Tzarina's brother-in-law Frederick von Hohenzollern, discovered something ancient and terrible when searching out the Tomb of Shoika. The rumors of those who witnessed her utilizing it to intervene in a battle in the eastern forests that swaddle the foothills of the mountains were confused and fantastical beyond belief. Or at least, that was what was assumed. For this year, the gargantuan beast returned, coaxed down from the mountains where it had long rested as a guardian to the Tomb of Shoika, ridden once more by Alexandra Snowblood. Underneath a small, localized snowstorm, it came stomping out of the Oblast. At least twenty tons of terrifying bulk, with massive cleaving tusks, the creature seems a beast of ice and snow made only partially flesh. It certainly scared everyone in their homes as it came down the swiftly cleared main thoroughfare before disappearing within the walls of the Gospodarin Palaces. How the woman managed to tame the beast is unknown, but there are plenty of supposed sightings of ogres and even possibly a wizard of the Empire in the foothills, but of course nothing is being confirmed or even acknowledged by the Romanovs that anything out of the ordinary has occurred.
