Heh, funny how the Norscan butcher kept out ogres in the 'do not sell' meat section. To be fair, I'm sure the Maw Ogres would love it if a butcher sold good ogre meat and they are sadly still the majority of ogre culture and most likely to be seen around Marienburg.

The Lizardman meat is of course funny, and makes me wonder how they would describe meat from different lizardmen types. I imagine at least one would be similar to croc meat.

That said, <ruinous powers stan on>while the chaos gods are destructive abominations, they also rule a whole lot of things that aren't evil, though Norscan culture probably is its own thing that moderates that and I don't see things like worshipping Slaanesh through philosophical art movements catching on there.

The dark gods are inherently evil. Worshiping them through their "good" domains directly empowers them which they would then invariably use that power for evil deeds, making any worship of chaos an inherently evil deed in and of itself. Then there's the fiction of them ruling over good things (or at least not evil things), they don't. Their entire schtick is the perversion and twisting of good to evil. Sometimes they're masked as benevolent deities or as forces of nature but they're anything but and those fabrications are only ruses to lure in unsuspecting folk who think they know better.

Khorne is not the god of honorable combat, he's the god of wanton and senseless slaughter. Nurgle is not the god of quiet entropy, he's the god of tormentous and aberrant decay. Slaanesh is not the god of satisfaction, he's the god of excessive and inhumane hedonism. Tzeentch isn't the god of progress, he's the god of demented lunacy.

But I'm still wavering a bit on the whole 'design' conversation thing, which, as stated by someone else in the thread, it's not like there's necessarily blue prints as we would know them. I can revise the front part of the update if that is desired by a sufficient number of people, I just didn't really see it as 'insulting' or a 'jab' as it were at the time. Really, though, I'm starting to wonder if something is just...genuinely off, lately. This is the second time in recent memory that I've written something that ya'll've found just...bad, I guess, with the writing, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm reaching just, I don't know, the point of some kind of old jalopy car that's just starting to mess up more and more after so many years? Or maybe it's just involving Manann stuff? Like, I didn't see any issue with the vote, I was just writing and then thinking to myself, well, how would this possibly come across delivered by the character in the state he's in to the Matriarch, and instead of wounded/concussed/blood-loss/drunk talking to concerned ally, I have people saying he came across as retarded.
Your character called player's suggestions bad and asked their character if they are stupid.
Some people took it personally. I've only got a small sting from it, but I am not that invested (didn't makes suggestions, etc.).

It's not that your arguments are bad. Some people just felt hurt, that's all.
Same goes for Manann stuff- it's not that it's improbable. It's that we failed and it hurts.

Did anyone ever argue against an improbable victory? We all cheer for Freddy's bullshit.
It's failure that gets arguments. Especially if it isn't clearly telegraphed (see the sneaky trading treaty).

Even then. Good is good, bad is bad.
Look at SV quests. Power creep and constant victories everywhere. It's not culture, it's natural selection. Nobody likes salt, after all.

Marvelous Marienburg 4 was a nice update.

The players got a update without their decision making coming back to haunt them. No major decisions. None of the tension the last few updates have thrown the thread into. The update was relaxing.

I really am sorry if I have negatively affected you by writing it like I did.

I won't be able online much today. Sorry to the unsatisfied readers, I'll try to do better or fix it or whatever, I guess.

People get attached and invested to quests like yours and they start to identify with their player character, and the failings of the character becomes their own. A person's gut instincts is to find excuses or brood if their failure was significant enough and the same happens whenever something bad occurs in-quest. What Maghda said certainly stung me too, but not enough to produce any salt because I already though it was a bit of a stupid thing to bring up, but had no other option than to hop on the bandwagon for the sake of the rest of the vote.

Don't take it too personally Tor. It might (to you) sound like people are complaining about your writing but that's not the case and you should definitely do away with the self criticism/loathing. Trying to satisfy everyone all the time is not only impossible but also detrimental, both for your mental health and the health of the quest imo. We have plenty of power fantasy romp quests that have the player always winning and while yes, having a word not revolve around you and bend over backwards to make you feel good about yourself and your choices does occasionally produce some strong negative emotions, it's ultimately the thing that keeps me and many like me interested. I've had many quests where I've stopped caring a long time ago, but I've never stopped caring about this quest. It's the one quest I honestly can't see myself ever forgetting. It's not perfect, nothing is and nothing ever will be, but it's great and amazing in all the ways that count.

We all might get salty from time to time and burden you with our whining (I know I have on several occasions) but that doesn't change the fact that your quest is one of, if not the best quest on this site and probably on the entire internet. That might be a subjective opinion on my part but it's also completely true as far as I'm concerned. You really shouldn't beat yourself up over things like this.

They are working to keep their hopes up, but this far in the south Myrmidia was much more prevalent than she was in the north.
West Freddy. West.

I mean, you aren't personally blessed by the God of Code though, right?
Crunch can do strange things to the brain.

Fair point, but then again it would fit his Deceiver aspect if nothing else. Still, funny how Shallya apparently likes him and now its my headcanon that all cultists of Shallya are lowkey into badboys in general. :p
Ranald is far too merry and non-violent to be a badboy. And Ranaldans do periodically ease the suffering of the poor, the downtrodden and the down on their luck(even if this almost always comes at the expense of the rich and powerful).

The Ruinous Powers don't "rule" those things you're talking about. They use them as bait.

[x] Gather Your Retinue, And Set Out For Home. You've had quite enough of this city for now, you think. (Begin Journey Home)

Not sure how long vote is going on for, but here are results so far. Seems like most have had their fill and want to head home.

Hopefully the turn results will work out as well as our interlude ones have at least.

  • [X] Plan: We are done, time to go home
-[X] The Prince's Rest: Located in the Gold Mound and the most elite inn in the entire city that could have bulk rooms booked ahead of time, the Prince's Rest is famous for its high grade accomodations, including a specialized coachyard and stable for those fellows who might be eccentric enough to have non-standard mounts up to and including gryphons, pegasi, and in one notable instance a camel of Araby. (Cost: 100 Gold Crowns A Night For Entire Retinue)

--[X] Visit a play at one of the major theaters in the gold mound with Natasha.
--[X] Visit any notable districts you didn't get to yesterday to complete the alcohol tour, look for anything that may attract your interest for trade, or just general interest.
--[X] Go back to Indic District and Arabtown and try and get some seeds and/or samples of rubber and coffee. Maybe the engineers or Jade Wizards can figure out a way around the plants' finicky climate needs. Failing that try and find a merchant willing to import the stuff to Ostland on a regular basis. Oh and maybe pick up a weapon or two for your own armory while you are at it.
--[X] See if anyone from not-Nippon town has knowledge of the ships or weapons from that part of the world and see if you can convince them to move to Ostland. They might offer your own people some unexpected insights. Pick up a weapon or two from here as well.
--[X] Go back to the Temple of Verena, maybe you can run into the Sword of Justice and have that chat you weren't able to before. Failing that try and see if their archives have anything interesting. It's a longshot but Leonardo did this city and if anyplace might have a copy of his records it's here.

Speak for yourself. I enjoyed the update, but did not enjoy yesterday and today ain't looking fun either. Can February be done already? No? There is another half a month of this bullshit? Oh. joy.

Also since I was out of thread for most of this month:

Have people come down from Katarin is a vampire train? Cause last I checked she knows about vampires and might even in fact be purging them from Kislev right now.

Am curious how Anna will respond to Natasha's present. Has that been talked about?

Should we ask Anna if she is OK with us helping Natasha learn about her other homeland?

Hahahaha, oh my god, I just realized that if they hear through the grapevine about us scouting out the Norscan shore, they might think it was their fault because of the timing.

Schadenfreude thou art a random and amusing bitch.

No? Like the train only picked up in this update and it was because of very good reasoning. Namely the woman who was last described as having a heart to cold for a conscience to survive in after her husband died now having a husband. That screams of mind-fuckery and we all know that just because you try to cut down on vampires doesn't mean that they can't sneak in.

Should we ask Anna if she is OK with us helping Natasha learn about her other homeland?
Why do we have to ask? Not like Anna is banning her kid from learning about it

Random thought but I wonder if we can take some inspiration from the Water Clock we saw to come up with an improvement for our steam tanks since a water clock is basically a very accurate recorder of how much water has been used which would probably be useful for a tank powered by water/alcohol

Well that's disappointing. Hopefully we'll have options to look for coffee and rubber sources in the future now that we know they exist...oh and getting ahold of one of those nifty water clocks.

Hope it gets better, but if you don't mind, would you be willing to explain what you are talking about?

A big trainwreck at work, a big trainwreck at home and small trainwrecks just getting seeded in for flavor. And it's only the first half of the month. While I don't feel like talking about the big ones or the little ones all that much, a not-complicated example would be the fact that there was plumbing disaster when a plumber for a floor below ours came and asked us to keep our faucet on so that the dirty water that comes trough every time a water main gets shut off and then turned on could be drained faster. This fucked up our kitchen faucet which resulted in one of my room mates having to run out and go fix it over the last few days. The cold water on the faucet works now, the hot water is yet to be fixed but it will be fixed at some point.

That is just that incident without any of the other bullshit that I'm dealing with that stacks on itself and with that incident. My life is mess and me doing work is dysfunctional at best and I'm barely functioning right now.

The big trainwreck at work is not getting fixed until the end of the month, the big trainwreck at home doesn't have a set repair date and all the other little trainwrecks mix with themselves and the big ones to give me an exponentially bigger trainwreck that is my life right now. Hey at least I know I'm making my way trough this and that the light at the end of the tunnel isn't an oncoming train anymore.

South-west, technically. An empire map better shows this fact (Marienburg is Westerland, the only location that matters). For most intents though, Marienburg is part of the South provinces due to it's trade importance.

Well that's disappointing. Hopefully we'll have options to look for coffee and rubber sources in the future now that we know they exist...oh and getting ahold of one of those nifty water clocks.
"Last minute searching" had the players request torroar to write another 24k, only this time the plan said "Give me 100 cakes QM". There's no point in the alcohol tour across the city in the areas Freddy didn't go to, unless the district/s are named. The plan failed to leave the city at the end, too much to do because of the alcohol tour bit being a blank check.

Because someone's gotta.

[X] Mama Ganna's Bucket: This one was not particularly recommended. In fact, it was warned against. Located in the Dead Canal, essentially a dead district of the city populated solely by the desperate as all of the trade and merchants and 'good life' left for other parts of the city. It is a place of murderous toughs, and those still trying to claw out of such dire circumstances through their shops and meager inns. The grimy and desperate are concentrated in this place like nowhere else. And yet, Mama Ganna, a Westerland woman born in the swamps, claims that so long as your people sleep in shifts, there would be no danger if you gave some patronage to the downtrodden and stayed in her inn for a time. (Cost: 25 Gold Crowns A Night For Entire Retinue)

Set it up as a plan?

I think you are completely joking, because it isn't in plan form, but that's not clear to me.

I do like Mama Ganna's Bucket because of the cheap Ostlander reputation the players can live up to. However, if the main objective is to leave Marienburg. Pay the most expense for safety, then leave the city by boat. A reason to stay in Marienburg should be avoided when the objective is to leave Marienburg.

Me personally? I hate it when people act stupid. For example, the 'game' with the kidnapping in Huckleberry Finn enraged me to the point I had to pause every few pages. The fact that I'm invested in Fred just makes it worse.

It's a pet peeve of mine, your writing is involved only in the sense that Fred was acting dumb because the Write-ins had him asking about a bunch of obvious stuff and you wrote about it.
