Note that Admiral Sulu is the one who controls where 5YM go. It's his game to keep them out there, pushing back against the Cardassians.
and they've done a good job so far, but this last engagement shows that they're getting smart about it, and more brazen.
If we can get the Excelsior's stats up, we can get better odds on 1v1 kills on those 'Battlecruisers', but they already roughly match the thing as far as I can tell.

Alongside Connie-B/Centaur Support in a hypothetical war, our Explorers SHOULD be fine, it's just a thought to give us an edge.

the same could be offered for Cloaking tech.

For me, the question is whether its worth it to put explorer research into an Excelsior-A instead of the Ambassador. Considering that neither are doable until we're higher up the tech tree, how much time would the former actually save us?

I'm generally fine with it. We should have the opportunity to open a research colony at Meridia VI, and I would love to do that.
We are likely going to have enough rp to keep our normal teams and the ones we buy busy anyway, so probably all that would do would allow us to run generic teams to finish off the odd tech. Which admittedly would be useful, but I'm not sure it's a priority. I wouldn't choose it ahead of discounted tech teams (unless we get quite a lot of discounted tech teams).

It is worth it.

We barely have any starship techs. I'd like to wait for us to get tier 1 techs before we begin on the ambassador.

Same with the Excelsior refit.

I'm proposing a freeze on new ships until tier 1 is done, and perhaps tier 2 ship computing.

Captain's Log, USS Enterprise, Stardate Unknown

That was the most exhausting ten minutes of my life. But victory.

Oh boy, this is going to be one hell of a report to write up.

I just noticed.... there was no actual reward at the end of the log, other than the survival of the Enterprise. I guess that ambush actually happened as a result of a series of failed rolls so that the mission was overall a "failure" because the Enterprise got trapped in a fight it would probably lose (and then won like a boss).

You misunderstand.

My question is: when we DO have the starship tech for a new explorer, should we start on the Ambassador immediately or refit the Excelsiors first?

Refits aren't something we can decide to make happen. They get offered as options in the Snakepit, presumably based on some logic that @OneirosTheWriter has about what tech tiers we have researched. But we as players can't just decide we want a refit option and have it appear. So I'm not sure why it's being phrased as an "or" question.

I will say that since we're continuing to build Excelsiors and starting a new one every turn, it's probably best that we pick up a refit option as soon as it does appear. That way the news ones built will be even better.

Since I've been imagining all the captain's logs as actual Trek episodes, and Ka'Sharren's logs in particular, I decided to make some visual designs for the original ships so that my mind wouldn't keep putting anachronistic Galors in there. The Excelsior is for scale.

Work in progress.
The Jaldun looks like someone flexing their muscles and I'm not sure what the Lorgot reminds me off.

Anyway, with the Betazoids entering the Federation we may be getting a new tech team from them, probably something like Xenopsychology/Foreign Anaylsis given their specialities.

Refitting EC Excelsiors means the valuable crews being idle for a whole year. Might as well move them over to a new Ambassador in that time and move the refitted ship to the regular fleet (which won't see any Ambassadors for a while). So Ambassador first IMO.

We don't have to refit the EC Excelsiors.

It would be nice, but the crew buffs make them better in everything but defense.
Also, refits and research is not mutually exclusive

I think we should have the new ship take a shorter mission until series 3 of FYMs start.

Cardassian area?

Its unlikely to be finished in time for the third round of FYM's. We haven't even started researching it, let alone building.

We'll probably have it ready in time for round four, but I doubt we'll have enough of them to replace the entire Explorer Corps until 2320.

T'Rinta is starting a weapons tech team specifically in hopes of being promoted to Explorer command. It would be a cruel test of her emotional control to tell her she can't have an Excelsior because she's doing too good a job as a weapons researcher.

On the other hand, a part of me really, really wants Rosalee McAdams to get an explorer command at some point; she got plot setup for it and everything.

The new Excelsior coming out soon, not the refit

I'm proposing a shorter first mission and the name USS (first name?) Aelin.

Let's assign Rosalee to the Aelin for the shorter mission, and go from there

Chad is awesome, but I don't think 5YM's are the job for him.
Chad will promote espirt d'corps and keep morale (and fitness!) high over a long, arduous mission away from civilization. In addition, he will likely have diplomatic boosts from HARDCORE FUN TIMES. In addition, assuming the Explorer Corps doesn't level out the gender ratio, Abigail Taggart as an XO would provide a backup power source in the event they can find a method to harness the energy of her frustration.

Cons: Species like the Sydraxians will probably dislike a Kegger and shoot them all on sight. Bummer, man.

Rosalee just got assigned to the Endurance. I'd say let her finish a few years in command there, then look at a transfer to an Explorer.

that's not necessarily true, the EC ships are on the very edges, and a few are in the 'Cardassian Frontier'...we need them at their best.

but I will say I'd push for an eventual refit at some point even if we did start work on replacing the Excelsior as an Explorer anyway, because the Excelsior becomes a Heavy Cruiser in that case.

I agree. Let's see what she can do with the Endurance.

Where does everyone think we should send the Endurance, by the way? I'm thinking we send it to the Klingon Border Zone to hold down matters there. Remember, we've been told border zones have a higher probability of Events, so having an Explorer there would be good. It also means we could free up some ships to go garrison Betazed, since that's now a thing we have to do. Theoretically the Endurance can hold the KBZ alone, though in practice I'd like to let her have another ship as back-up.

In regards to cloaking there is one very good reason to get it.

The prime directive a XX earth equivalent has the possibility to observe a starship on the off-chance it has a telescope pointed in the right direction.

With a cloak we can get to such civilizations into Low Orbit for up close studies, or in case of a civilization that has not developed warp but colonized its solar system our ships could stay under cloak to study the phenomenon and simply kick up the decision up to Starfleet Command.

I would send The Endurance to the CBZ and pull the small ships entirely. That means we only have Excelsiors or a Constitution responding to events there.
