You don't trust them because their incredibly generic name is similar to another incredibly generic name.

I, meanwhile, am calculating based on the assumption that the UFP is going to be better at peer diplo than the Cardassians, and noting that if a Cardassia-ISC war breaks out we might as well have the inevitable UFP-Cardassia war while we're at a massive edge.

I'd like to introduce you to a major political force known as the Pacifist Party.

At most it would be a good time to "renegotiate" the treaty of Celos and squeeze out some concessions.

Lame Name aside, I dont trust then because They're new and we don't know anything about them.

And I don't like the idea of having a war of choice because purely strategic cold calculus. I don't trust that line of thinking. The immediate insane threat of the Licori is about as far as I'd bend. A Bolt out of the blue attack because lolynot is too far.

It's hardly bolt from the blue or lolynot.

Reminder, we're already in a state of limited war. This isn't even starting a war, it's escalating an existing hot war.

Outside of treaty stipulations for personal gain.

There is no quicker way to break the Federation and shoot our soft power in face.

IF the Cardassians managed to involve themselves in a war with another major like the ISC, I would think the best response we could make would be to move on all their affiliated and friendly states and issue bald-faced denials when they complain about Celos. And when I say move, I mean quietly intervene with the Sydraxians, start talking to the Dawiar on the sly, and do a massive diplomatic offensive on the Yrillian/Gretarian front and on the Ashidi.

That is a very, very massive IF, though, but I feel breaking the Ashalla Pact in that way would be more in-character and is the kind of shenanigans the Federation could get up to against a distracted enemy.

e: And naturally, negotiations with the power they're fighting.

It's terribly easy to get the Cardassians to break it first. Just allow pursuit and infrastructure strikes.

2316.Q1 - A New Beginning
You are President Arsharra N'Gir and you are pretty damn pleased with yourself.

A war that many warned you would be brutal and intractable was over within the year. For all intents and purposes, it was over as far as a shooting war went, your Starfleet had accomplished your goals within a couple months. Everything else for the past six months has been the meat of the issue: the politics. With your successes behind you, you are well positioned to retain your seat at Council next time it comes around, and the Development faction is confident of claiming a plurality.

Valentina Sousa was an alright Admiral in your opinion, though no Kahurangi. But then, who was? Jorlyth sh'Arrath made a good decision, and even if you clashed with the now retired Admiral on a few occasions, she had good advice and helped you through the early days of your Presidency. Now, even though you are a Caitian and relatively new to the Federation as a whole, the enormous breadth of the power invested in the commander of Starfleet is clearly apparent to you. Especially so after a couple years in office, where the raw amount of things that office touches upon became clear. But even so, like the manager of a sports team who didn't get to pick their coach, you chafed a little in your relationship with sh'Arrath's appointee. It didn't help that, like most Starfleet officers, you're pretty sure she votes Expansionist.

All of the faction leaders have been meeting with you in the lead-up to this decision. The last two Admirals have served the Federation very well, and continuing that was a must for you. Appointing a Rogers, or worse, could be devastating for your political career and legacy, and no less devastating for the Federation as a whole. This decision will be one of the most crucial you can make.

From: Councilor Sadek, D-Atatan
To: President Arsharra N'Gir, D-Ollasa IV
Subject: Appointment to Commander, Starfleet

Ms President,

As requested, I have examined service records and protocol exhaustively, and am prepared to offer my short-list of acceptable candidates to the office of Commander, Starfleet. They are as follows:

[ ] Vice Admiral Hikaru Sulu
Human Male, 79
Time in Rank, 6 Years

[ ] Vice Admiral Patricia Chen
Human Female, 59
Time in Rank, 4 Years

[ ] Vice Admiral Shey ch'Tharvasse
Andorian Chan, 69
Time in Rank, 4 Years

Despite the expansion in the ranks of Vice Admirals, it will not be until the next assignment to Commander, Starfleet that they are viable options for selection.

Dutifully,
Sadek
UFP Councillor

Hmm, still just the Federation old guard. Humans, humans, and Andorians. Well, that worm will turn...

Elements. the poor Dylaarians. Theyd be ground zero for that war. I'm actually kinda sad that those little Gecko peeps will get their shit shot up as Cardassian meat shields. They're not bad honest. A bit excitable, but fairly peaceful people.

If an ISC-Cardassian war broke out, we'd want to pry away all their affiliates while simultaneously launching full-scale operations in the GBZ. I don't think join with the ISC is necessary. A major war there would draw down the Cardassians badly enough we would retain a major strategic advantage for a long time, especially if we engaged in war operations within the GBZ and destroyed as many of their outposts as possible.

[X] Vice Admiral Hikaru Sulu

The last of the Enterprise core team on field duty. The man who does everything. Hikaru Sulu!

This is our last chance. I don't expect him to stay long though.

Such a war would be fought in the GBZ, so we'd be de-facto operating as allied forces in the same front.

Sadly this is all pie-in-the-sky talk though, because I seriously doubt the Cardassians are interested in fighting a power somewhat more distant to them than we are.
