Starfleet Intelligence Command - Steering Committee

Admiral,

The successful operation to destroy the Anoxa superweapon may have been one of the pivotal moments of the Arcadian War. It was certainly one of the crowning glories of Starfleet Intelligence. Ever more surprising, it is one that we can talk about! Certainly, the Office-That-Must-Not-Be-Numbered cannot be so openly spoken about.

The fact that this war has been brought to a substantive close so quickly, when the Romulans clearly expected us to be tied down for years, has deeply alarmed out neighbours Tailward. However, with reports of Birds of Prey of either variety burning in the void, they can do little about the matter now. We remain locked in a low-simmer of a battle with Romulan assets attempting to influence House Bene. This has not led to direct violence, but there have been some suspicious close-call accidents encountered by our staff on Morshadd.

Elsewhere, the Cardassian espionage attempts have accelerated. They are thus far restricted to information gathering, and not direct acts of sabotage.

Dutifully,
Vice Admiral Scott Linderley, Director

Ferengi!

Huh I wonder if I can estimate how far they are from us (looks at map and previous speed estimates).

Let's see...

I previously estimated that the Kadeshi expedition rushed through the GBZ at a rate of 10 ly/mo for about 2 quarters starting at Apinae in EOY 2312 (or maybe Collie Station) and ending at Lydantic Outpost mid-2313, and that their cruise/average speed is probably 5 ly/mo as they moseyed their way from Earth to Apinae through year 2312. It's now mid-2315, two years later. Furthermore, they shaved off a year of travel time last year. So they've effectively traveled about (10*0.5+5*3)*12 = 240 ly since Lydantic.

The straight line from Apinae through Lydantic (or better, Collie Station to Lydantic) has spinwards:corewards speed ratio of nearly 1:1 - in other words, nearly a square diagonal heading NW on the known galactic map. 240 ly in the diagonal is nearly 160 ly spinwards AND corewards.

So the approximate subsector coordinate of the Ferengi is 21y. That's really really far away. Another way to visualize that is to imagine a straight line from Qo'nos to Lydantic and nearly triple the length of that line in that direction.

So anyone worrying about Cardassians influencing Ferengi or vice versa can relax.

Or not. Perhaps the Ferengi that the Kadeshi met are just trader scouts and their empire is actually closer. Or the Kadeshi expedition slowed down or made a turn somewhere. On most Star Trek Federation-centric maps that I've seen, Ferengi are typically somewhere far coreward, sometimes a bit tailwards, of the Cardassians. Even if the TBG AU takes liberties with all the inconsistent maps, I'd bet that the core Ferengi worlds are less than 240 ly away from the Apinae.

edit: I meant coreward, not rimward *sigh*

Hey yeah we do have a member and affiliate that are really good at this mercantile thing. Heh that would be interesting.

@OneirosTheWriter shouldn't we have five general reports since we took the option at the snakepit to increase intel reports by one or does that kick in next year? Also did our listening posts in the CBZ fail the roll for an extra intel report?

Since Nash is due to another reassignment, what about sending her to Gabriel? The Cardassians hate and fear her, and she has proven her competence twice over.

@OneirosTheWriter, somewhat tangential question: with Old Guard Seruk no longer in charge of Personnel, is there going to be some equivalent of some steering meeting (like this annual intelligence one and the 4 year academy one)? A lot of people were hoping to see something different in the last Rat Race, but no dice... so maybe some sort of personnel steering meeting is in order?

[X][GBZ] Nash ka'Sharren

So assuming five reports thanks to the snakepit, here are my thoughts: Romulan shipyard as we did the other options for the tactical report more recently. Cardassian tactics since we may still fight them in the GBZ. Ashidi diplo report as they are a race near us and Cardassia and I would like to know where each side stands and if we can try and push relations there. One report needs to go to the Licori looking at the houses and Romulans to keep us up to date there. Also a General Diplo report on what the Cardassians are doing will be helpful. And finally what is going on in Sydraxia.

For Rear Admiral, Nash has proven she can do it to me with her ability during the Licroi war, and she is good at diplomacy so she can coordinate with the Amarkia and Apiata for strikes (we saw one instance of problems with Amarkia). Plus both of those members love her so even more bonus to co ordination.

I honestly think our best bet RE: Recruitment is to find some way to get councilors to campaign on our behalf to get more qualified candidates applying, particularly from affiliates. Although I do like the unified Space Academy as a concept.

That or we assuage their concerns about reducing Starfleet Academy entrance and graduation standards :V

Unsure on intel, but

[X] Rear Admiral Pathe Lathriss

He'll be good for working with the Amarki ships, and his stats are all pretty good bar Politics, which is the least important.

This would be one of the 'slaps' in our ongoing 'slap slap kiss' relationship with the Romulans. Aaanyway. My vote!

@OneirosTheWriter, is there a reason you aren't offering "Cardassian Fleet Strength Report" as a [CARD] option? I'd actually kind of like to know that; it's been a while since we got a good count on how many ships they really have. We have estimates, but that's not the same thing. In hopes that you'll create such a thing for us...

[X][CARD] Cardassian Fleet Strength Report

[not sure what to vote for for [ROM]

[X][REPORT] Romulan Diplomatic Posture Report
[X][REPORT] GBZ: Cardassian Strength
[X][REPORT] Status/Progress of Licori Succession Crisis
[X][REPORT] Status/Progress of Klingon-Romulan War
[X][REPORT] Status/Progress of Sydraxian Civil Strife

[Tempted to swap out 'Klingon battleship report' for 'Cardassian fleet strength in GBZ' which is more immediately actionable... actually, I'm going to do that. Even though I'd like to know about the battleship. :( ]

[Decided to give up the extra Sydraxian diplomatic posture information so that we can keep track of the Licori succession crisis]

And finally...

[X][GBZ] Nash ka'Sharren

I always wanted Nash for this job, from before this job even existed.

Can we spend Intelligence Reports on Counterintelligence actions?

Linderlay's bonus is going to be rather important in the coming years, isn't he..?

Nash is the best candidate for the GBZ. Great stats, lots of Amarki and Apiata contacts, will appear in plot more often, her infamous reputation with the Cardassians, etc.

On the other hand, she's only been a Commodore for 4.5 years...which isn't that short to be honest, but there's this nagging feeling that the faster we promote her, the earlier she'll eventually retire. Mixed feelings :-/

edit: Anyway I'll vote on this later after work and stuff

The canon version of this resulted in the borg knocking, didn't it?
Maybe Thuir and Mbeki have made a better impression on Qute than Picard did (at first) on Q?

[not ruling out Qute and Q being the same entity, but not ruling it in, either]

@Briefvoice @Simon_Jester What would you say to adding in an affiliate recruitment push / exchange programme? Ease the transition a bit.
Who, me? I very rarely do snakepit plans.

Yay Ferengi!

Though it seems as if they are quite far away.
Well, we weren't really 'scheduled' to run into them until the TNG era, so it's not surprising we had to send out a deep space expedition like Ajam's to find them.

Note that unless I am sorely mistaken, they were expecting to make a five thousand light year journey in twenty years' elapsed time. I don't think they can do that if their normal cruising speed is five light-years a month.

Well, as drive technology improves, 240 light-years becomes, like, six to eight week's sailing at high warp. The Ferengi are the ideal candidate for a species that sends out expeditions and members far beyond the normal confines of its space, arguably even more so than the Federation. Because you can explore ANYTHING, and will tend to preferentially explore stuff close to home, but to find really exotic trading options you have to keep going until you bump into not just 'something interesting' but someone WITH something interesting. And most of the Ferengi influences we encountered in Federation space were always specific private individuals or lone ships, exactly as you'd expect.

Militating against this is the fact that relatively casual travel to and from Ferenginar featured in more than one episode of Deep Space Nine as I recall... but honestly I'd give up those episodes in exchange for getting back the TNG 'kind of dangerous hardass' Ferengi.

Welp, I tabbed and didn't read it.

What do I do now!??!?!
Ask Linderley for another one. This one will be a pop-up that starts with five minutes of Smugtelligence Chief, though.

We don't really need Romulan shipyard updates every two years, in my opinion. The real point of doing that is to keep track of how many new ships the Romulans have, and arguably that is a goal better served by checking their fleet strength, especially now that they're in a war and they're probably going to start losing ships relatively rapidly.

We MAY use 'Cardassian tactics,' but we may not. I'd rather get things I know we're going to be able to use. With Ainsworth in charge we knew we'd be going on the offensive. Here, not so much. Although I'm a little confused about whether we get the +5% bonus immediately after we vote for it, or whether it accrues during the interval between one "Well, They Try" post and the next.

If you want a report on the Licori succession in general, don't just vote for "House Bene" in particular.

While I didn't pick a report on the Ashidi, I'm not going to say that's wrong; likewise for Cardassian diplomatic posture.

Unsure on intel, but

[] Rear Admiral Pathe Lathriss

He'll be good for working with the Amarki ships, and his stats are all pretty good bar Politics, which is the least important.
Lathriss will be good for working with the Amarki contingent, but has no special aptitude for working with the Caitians or the (critically important) Apiata contingent. Low Politics is probably about as likely to bite us as Low Diplomacy. Furthermore there's the question of what happens to Lathriss as a doctrine researcher if he's off leading a fleet for years.

If we were in a position to do a generalized shakeup of the Gabriel Expanse command structure, I'd say promote Jessica Rivers into the overall command position. Or move Eaton or T'Lorel, or maybe someone else I haven't thought of, into that slot laterally. Then give Nash a task force command under Rivers.

Well, it could end in a bonus scene with a sword duel between Halkh and one of a number of people. I've thought through a few possible candidates likely to be skilled in close combat who were present aboard the Enterprise-B that week, and possible outcomes. But it got slipped into the conversation for other reasons.
Someone pranked them both and now it's Wolfe v Halkh. No one will be satisfied!

Actually though Sharizz v Halkh might be interesting with the difference between stun baton and sword, but Sharizz is in Orion space rn AFAIK.
