So now we have rogue Romulans and sinister Syndicate personnel showing their heads thinking that the cats away the mice can play? Let us dissuade them of this mistaken belief.

Romulan "Splinter Group" you say?

Heh.

Also: Sydraxian military government gas fallen! Take that Cardassian!

An entire Cardassian flank might go up in a puff of smoke now! As the Sydraxians go; So to go the Gretarians and Yrillians!

[Pedant]Also: "Distaff Rigellians"?

That's an odd turn of phrase because distaff means "women's work" or the female counterpart/equivalent of a male.

Which is odd because the Syndicate is like, mainly Orion female in stereotype, so an organization being distaff from it is an odd thing to say.

I assume that you meant something more along the lines of a junior subsidiary of the main syndicate that we smashed?

What we encountered was staggering. A Sydraxian delegation is on hand, representing a faction of "concerned citizens". The government in Dar Nakar has fallen amid the chaos and tumult post-Lora. This is well out of my pay-grade...

[Federation Diplomatic Service takes the lead - no bonus to Starfleet, response roll failed]

i'm actually kind of ok with the diplomatic service taking the lead here, it's probably more up their ally than ours. I can see why Sydraxian government might collapse, they kept pressing for war with the federation, only to be met with a non-war where the federation kept trying to seek peace as the Sydraxians resorted to increasingly dishonorable tactics to try and force a confrontation, even sinking so low as to force an ally to fake a distress call, and going so far as to accepting the insult that was the treaty of celios telling them who they can treat with to force the federation to battle. Then the federation turned around and tore through their fleet like a buzzsaw without losing a single ship. That's not even touching on the optics of a massive federation fleet looming unopposed over a Sydraxian colony world.

they were always going to take the lead. we just didn't get pp because the response roll failed.

The Sydraxian government has collapsed and now we have to deal with all sorts of fun political and gunboat diplomacy in regards to them.

At least we'll probably end up getting affiliates out of it.

Uh oh...this may not bode well for future relations with the Romulans. Especially on the precipice of their war with the Klingons. Hopefully they truly are unaffiliated with the Romulans, and not something like a Tal Shiar cell, because we don't really need more problems at the moment.

I'm not sure why the Tal Shiar would be doing this (this is a really bad time for the Romulans to provoke the Federation), but they haven't exactly made the best impression in this quest so who knows.

Best to treat this as an unaffiliated terror organization for now, but keep our guard raised and our ears open for signs to the contrary. And ask the Star Empire what they know about this, of course, but that's the FDS' job.

Took them long enough, but I'm glad the Sydraxian people finally came to their senses.

Snakepit is right around the corner. Now is finally the time to push Gretaria.

e: I also like how the Yrillians were the messenger. Can't send a transmission or spare one of your own ships? Yeesh.

Now that I think about it, this is really going to piss off Cardassia. If the Sydraxian jump ship, others (such as the for all intents and purposes surrounded Dawiar) might consider bailing as well.

The Sydraxians also have the advantage of not having to deal with Cardassian reinforcements, considering there is a giant free fire zone between the two groups.

I don't think it is likely for the Tal Shiar to do it either, however, seeing as we are going to be bringing this up them at the talks at Athos, this raises the question of what their answer will be. This could just be exactly as we have seen, and as you stated, an unaffiliated terror group. But the paranoid side of me makes me wonder if someone else had an ulterior motive when it came to this, such as potentially allowing themselves to be caught so as to strain Federation and Romulan relations.

In any case, your suggestions are sound, and we'd best take a wait and see approach for now, as jumping the gun would be really bad for us at this juncture.

I think it also depends on if the exact wording of the Treaty of Celos allows diplomatic contact with the new government, which we were technically forbidden, and to what degree the new government wants to associate with the Cardassians. That might also be why we're getting a message from "concerned citizens" instead of an official communique, because the Treaty of Celos is still in effect.

The sad things is it's not that uncommon for ST intelligence agencies to make things worse.

With the Perciar in company, we have rushed at emergency warp factors to the Joon Laam system, where an Yrillian vessel has somehow managed to pop up and signal the nearest Amarkian facility. What we encountered was staggering. A Sydraxian delegation is on hand, representing a faction of "concerned citizens". The government in Dar Nakar has fallen amid the chaos and tumult post-Lora. Hoo boy. I mean on the one hand it's good, but on the other hand we're back to the game of, "Will this make the Cardassians freak out?" There certainly have been picking far-reaching consequences from putting Ainsworth in charge of the Gabriel conflict. No one else would have gone after the Sydraxians like she did, and that led directly to this.

Captain's Log, USS S'harien, Stardate 25775.8

I ran into a classmate from the Academy, who was eventually drummed out of Starfleet for involvement with an illegal attempt to run contraband, a Tellarite by the name of Adruc brisc Mugh.

It appears that the fresh air in the penal camp did wonders for his health. Although he was very resentful about Starfleet's presence at first, when I spoke with him directly he recognised me and became more cooperative. He also said that he didn't want to be on the wrong side of someone who knew as much as I did about the properties of highly-energetic volatile matter.

Adruc informed me that the station has been having considerable trouble with pirate raiders. Many of the station workers have families on a nearby world, and when the pirates detected Starfleet's approach, they warned the station crew that if they informed us of their presence, the families on that world would be forfeit. I confess, I did not expect to be the beneficiary of Adruc's disregard for his colleagues.

I do love T'Rinta's sardonic humor. And that she associates with so many disreputable people.

Captain's Log, USS Stargazer, Stardate 25776.2

As near as we can tell, the comets in the system's Oort Cloud contain a number of unusual elements in their ice. Gauging from orbital tracks and a large whole that appears to have been punched through the cloud, at some point in the distant past, a rogue planet was captured by this system's primary. When it arrived, it came through the belt, and sent a great wave of comets into the gas giant, where the chemicals mixed and formed early protein sequences. From there, we see indications of Preserver handiwork in the genetic code. So this ecosystem is part natural, part Preserver, but entirely fascinating to me.

[+10rp]

It occurs to me that this isn't just another bit of random Preserver handiwork. Remember, the Kadeshi are following a trail left by the Preservers. The ecosystem of this gas giant is another milestone.

Captain's Log, USS Voshov, Stardate 25776.3

I've sent down Commander Alaai Toor, my Amarkian Chief Engineer, with some of her best people to expedite repairs to the damaged oxygen plant. At the same time, Lieutenant T'Pen is taking a science detachment to investigate what caused the blast. My early discussions with the colonial administration makes me suspicious. Doctor Ashrr P'Hrrsh has beamed aboard a dozen wounded colonists, who either suffered wounds from the explosion or the smoke.

Finally I'm headed with with Ship's Counsellor Herixa Tersei to learn some more from the local leaders.

Wow, NPC names coming fast and furious for the Voshov. You named a lot of the most significant senior officers here.

Captain's Log, USS S'harien, Stardate 25777.9

I have taken the S'harien into battle, and found the performance of my tactical staff to be most adequate. The counter-assault by the pirates was most fierce, however, with discipline and a thorough appreciation for the ability to use photon torpedoes for masking or corralling effects, we were able to destroy each vessel without sustaining damage. We have received considerable appreciation from the station and the colony world, who are considering dropping their independent status to become an affiliate of the Federation.

[Gain +15pp, +10br, avoid damage from Hard DC check]

"Each vessel".... that was an extensive pirate operation if they were fielding multiple starships. No wonder they were actually a danger to an Excelsior.

Captain's Log, USS Voshov, Stardate 25778.1

My security chief has taken into custody the ring-leader of the separatists on the colony world, and it is as we feared. A Romulan splinter group is behind it! The ring-leader is a Romulan herself, and a number of the group's agents carried highly-illegal disruptor pistols. This raises grave concerns, and I am sure the Federation will be bringing this up with their counterparts at Athos.

[Gain +5pp, +5sr]

Okay, Romulans. Well. Another plate for the spinning.

Will comment on the update later, but for now...

Snakepit is right around the corner. Now is finally the time to push Gretaria.

We should have 185pp now by my tally.

2314 EOY: 185
Q1 MWCO Report: -10 (Cats GBZ yellow-light) -5 (Caldonian Rennie)
Q1.M1 Captain's Log: +10 (Vigour) +5 (Atuin)
Q1.M2.F1 Arcadian Crisis: -10 (Betazoid Patroller refit)
Q1.M2 Captain's Log: -10 (Stalwart failed response)
Q1.M3 Captain's Log: +15 (S'harien) +5 (Voshov)

185 - 10 -5 + 10 + 5 - 10 - 10 + 15 + 5 = 185pp

I'll give pretty good odds these are Sydraxian dissidents rather than a new government.

Fortunately there are no lovesick Ferengi in sight.

True. Could be some kind of elaborate Klingon black flag conducted with the help of disgruntled Romulan exiles (which also gives them plausible deniability even if it fails).

Or just disgruntled Romulan exiles acting on their own to give a final middle finger to the RSE, without any outside help.

Too many possibilities at this point. Need more investigation.

It said "concerned citizens" rather than "new government." I'll take this to mean that the Sydraxians are still fighting (either physically or rhetorically) over who gets to be the new regime.

However, this means that iron is still hot, and we can strike now to help a Federation-friendly government (probably the faction that approached us) come to power. With the Hierarchy already overthrown, the Sydraxians should no longer be covered by the Treaty of Celos, so we're legally in the clear.

Get fucked Spoonheads!

From: Vice Admiral Nyota Uhura, Director, Starfleet Operations Command
To: Admiral Valentina Sousa, Commanding, Starfleet
Subject: Gabriel Border Zone Commander

Admiral,

With the appointment of Rear Admiral Ainsworth to Explorer Corps, which even that hard charger considers a reward for good service in the Gabriel, we now have a vacancy in the Gabriel. As this is one of the commands you have designated of utmost strategic importance, I would like your thoughts on the candidates that we have to take command of the sector. For this quarter, while we rearrange personnel, Commodore Rivers is taking temporary command of the sector with orders to protect against the Cardassians.

Sincerely,
Vice Admiral Uhura

I don't think this has been followed up on yet. Which probably means its due in the very next update, the GBZ status report.

Sooo ship stats and deployment stuff are in spreadsheet form now.

TBG ships and deployments

May need some cleanup but information should be accurate to 2315Q2.M1.F1

Haven't added member fleet elements of various task forces yet.

This is really nice :)

Mmmm, this was just... excellent, classic Captain's Log with juuust the right blend of herbs and spices.

Captain's Log, USS Stargazer, Stardate 25772.4 - Captain Maryam Ajam

The fleet is pausing and reorganising in a system we have designated 9 Barber, after picking up faint life-sign indications on long-range sensors. We are taking a tour of the system to try to track down these signs while Fleet Command isolates a resource deposit.

I will never complain about the FDS not doing anything again.

THEY DRANK OUR MILKSHAKE RESPONDED TO OUR EVENT! :D

Captain's Log, USS S'harien, Stardate 25774.1 - Captain T'Rinta

We have stopped in at an independent station in the Ithidian system at the behest of the Diplomatic Service and Starfleet Medical.

However, we have been surprised to find that the station is showing signs of battle damage. They are being unexpectedly uncooperative in explaining why. I have received no fewer than five separate, mutually exclusive explanations for the battle damage.

T'Rinta uses Torpedo Maven! It's super-effective!

Also, cue some junior tactical officer in a quiet corner of the ship, murmuring... "It's just like with Captain Saavik, only with less bad luck and more huge explosions..."

[big smile]

... wow the return of the captain log and Sydraxian government falling! The first cracks in the Cardassian client system and not the Dawiar like we thought. Shame we do not have the coverage of ships to pass the events and get an advantage in the diplomacy actions. Also nice to see the groundwork we laid with the Yrillians is paying off.
