Stardate 22144.3
"... more than regulations. A starship is about family."
You can hear Rear Admiral Sulu giving his final briefing to his explorer captains before they are delivered to their ships. You pause, hovering just outside.
"You will spend most of your time as the only Starfleet vessel for Lighyears around. Help will always be too late. Reinforcements will always arrive only to share in the celebration or commiseration. You are Starfleet's Explorer Corps. The very best of the Federation's very best, all your brothers and sisters. Always look for the solution, always trust your crew. And remember, the regulations were written for the predictable. Your stock in trade will be the unknown, the unpredictable. As long as you do your best to do what's right, I will never cease protecting you."
Silence follows, and you take that moment to pop your head into the room. You see the returning Nash ka'Sharren, insouciant grin on her face, jacket tab open. There's big Maryam Ajam, arms folded and leaning forward, eyes bright like there's always a question about to spring forth. Looming Michel Thuir, gaze sharp as flint with a face as composed as marble. If he's feeling concerned about taking on a ship that weighs in at over three times that of his old command it doesn't show. And Captain Straak, who patience has been rewarded with another chance at space, has relief nearly printed on his face, an unusual display of emotion from a Vulcan captain who was on the cusp of giving up his ambition.
"Admiral! Welcome," says Sulu as you approach.
"Any longer and you'll leave us all waiting," you say. "Come, the ceremony is about to begin."
===============================
The ships have spent time between arriving back early last quarter and this departure late in the first quarter of 2306 refitting, replenishing, restocking. A number of members of the crews leave and join, switching assignments, heading off to new careers, departing Starfleet altogether. Others take their place.
Miranda-class starships are patrolling intently with so much of Starfleet's power now lying vulnerable in their bays at Starbase 1, a mix of Starfleet and the local United Earth member world ships. One of them makes a close fly-by of the station at a reckless 1/10th impulse, showing off to the Council. Your eyes narrow even as you hear the excited giggles. You'll have someone's backside in a sling for this stunt. The station windows shake with the interaction with the navigational deflectors and low milli-cochrane level subspace field, the station shields flaring gently as it fights to keep out the radioactive discharge of the impulse drive.
As the blue of the deflectors fade, however, you see the lights of the starbase docking bays light up and first the USS Enterprise, then the USS Courageous, the USS Sarek, and finally, the USS Miracht, begin to deploy. These four massive ships, nearly twenty years later still some of the very largest, most potent ships in the galaxy, begin their stellar dance. The gracefully roll and turn over, heading out for their starting destinations. Cheers go up in the observation deck as the first of them go to warp.
"...where no one has gone before," you whisper to yourself.
To be honest, you think you'd rather have their job!

Captain's Log, USS Enterprise, Stardate 22147.4 - Captain Nash ka'Sharren
We have begun our new Five Year Mission of Exploration! Most of my senior crew remains, and I have the utmost confidence in what we can achieve over the next five years.
We will be stopping by the Tellarite colony world of Belphon III in order to collect a diplomatic mission to the Indorians, and should arrive within the next day.
I fought hard to avoid the move to flag rank and to stay with this ship. It has paid off for me. Now to make sure it pays off for Starfleet.

Captain's Log, USS Miracht, Stardate 22147.9 - Captain Michel Thuir
Well, after all the dire warnings and almost-threats of imminent harm in the Explorer Corps, it appears our first round of exploration has progressed smoothly. At a rough midway point between Amarkia and Indoria, although higher on the galactic plane, we have located a world that would be suitable for a mining colony.

Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 22148.2 - Captain Straak
I have been diverted away from the Tellarite frontier shortly after departing Sol System. Instead I have been directed to the Vulcan colony world of Ghellan-Am. The Vulcan authorities have called in Starfleet's aid, and Starfleet's aid, my old ship, the Constellation-class USS Selaya, has called in further aid. And arriving in-system, I believe that I can determine why without difficulty.
The colony is on a Class L marginal planet and was looking for aid in further developing a series of environmental systems. Consequently, they invited representatives from a number of Gaeni Institutes, and Orion Firms to the colony in present details on what could be done to improve the conditions of the colony. From here, it appears that the Gaeni and Orion have begun competing in an other-than-authorised manner, culminating in the sabotage of a Gaeni Tech-Cruiser.

Captain's Log, USS Courageous, Stardate 22148.4 - Captain Maryam Ajam
My very first command, and it is straight into one of the most prestigious posts of all of Starfleet. Well, I do think I was born to explore, discover, and inquire, so I plan to take this opportunity with both hands. We have investigated the Parramatta 441 system, and located a useful supply of tritanium ore.
I love being back among these stars, sailing through the rings of gas giants, the flares of news stars. Taking in the meteor-pocked surface of these new worlds.

Right back into the water it seems.
The diplomats have been kidnapped by a separatist group on the colony to gain some leverage out of Tellar Prime. Time to go talk things out.

Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 22149.4
There are four Gaeni Institutes, three Orion Firms, and a number of subsidiaries involved. Of these, some unknown number less than the whole are participating in these battles. I have worked with the captain of the Selaya and hte colony administrators to attempt to narrow down those responsible. From what we can determine, the Gaeni are on technological devices to produce brute force effects. The Orion houses are more likely to integrate a sentient element to their plans, using technologically-enabled agents to wreak havoc. One Senior Researcher and one Chief Operating Officer have been assassinated so far, with an unknown number of subordinates harmed in the violence.
As a starting measure, we have ordered the Pallas Abat Higher Technology Institute back to the Tech-Frigate IGS Pall-Keat, plus the Orion firm Yoland, Aziddi & Maras to depart. In addition, we have detained the senior official present of the Union Astrosciences Firm under suspicion from Starfleet Intelligence that they are a member of the Orion Syndicate. Further, by communicating with the various houses and making it clear that should these tactics continue, all Firms and Institutes will be ejected from Gellan-Am, there should be a decrease in activity.

The most difficult part of resolving this kidnapping was simply finding out how to get in touch with the woman who leads the separatist. It turns out she is a Caitian who is campaigning for more recognition to the Caitian immigrants on the colony world. Newly promoted first officer Command Mrr'Shan threw a fit, as did my new Chief of Security, and Lieutenant-Commander Leaniss, but I went ahead with my plan. After locating this separatist, I waited until she was alone and then beamed directly into the compound after Commander Zaardmani was able to fully analyse their inhibitor field and deploy of reversed harmonic to create a narrow pocket of clear-air.
The look on the faces of the rest of the separatists when we walked out of her office was one for posterity. The diplomats have been released, and we are able to continue on to Indoria.

A further Institute and Firm have been ejected from Gellan-Am, and the remaining have ceased their conflicts. The facilities aboard the Sarek have proved instrumental in tracking the agents of these competing corporations, and defeating the attempted obfuscation.
We have received the gratitude of the Illuminated Technocracy of Gaen and the Orion Union after fully recording the behaviour of the relevant factions and forwarding it on to them. Proceedings will soon be pending against the trouble-makers.

Captain's Log, USS Miracht, Stardate 22153.3
We have had our first encounter with the Cardassians while making an unfruitful search through a system with no planets, only a large asteroid ring. The ship appeared to scan us intently, though our shields would have dampened their efforts, and then turned and quickly went to warp. I have to suspect that news of another Excelsior-class explorer in the region is about to hit Cardassia.
