I love it.

Well, what it comes down to is that if they try to make demands on behalf of a political entity that has a life expectancy measured in days...

1) They look stupid for backing a blatantly losing team. Like, seriously, you were really prepared to even pretend to be willing to go to war on behalf of a woman whose 'nation' is one half of a burning city guarded only by zombies?

2) Related to being made to look stupid, but slightly different: They are also made to look weak for having said 'we will protect the Republic of Celos,' only for the Republic of Celos to immediately fall. It devalues future claims of Cardassian protection.

These are the reasons that a guerilla movement fighting for independence USUALLY has to inflict some significant defeats on the government forces before foreign powers start paying any attention (e.g. the American Revolution and the battle of Saratoga).

Yes, that's mostly because we may really need militarization in the near future. And because we don't want to bring militarization close to Threat if we can reasonably help it. It's the one currency we cannot easily replace; buying down a point of militarization costs something like 50-60 political will.

Some day we may really, really want to spend +3 militarization on something we think we need (say, pushing the Federation to keep fighting Cardassians until Bajor is liberated). When that day comes, our overall effort to keep militarization as low as possible is going to pay off big-time.

The Romulans were "punished" by suffering worse losses to the Biophage than the other two major powers. They lost a major capital ship and a number of other ships. They had to evacuate just as many colonies, if not more.

And afterwards, the Federation in particular did NOT seek to punish them, because frankly the Romulans even telling us about the Biophage at all represented a huge step forward in mutual trust for the Romulan-Federation relationship.

Look at how Romulan-Federation interactions look in either the TOS era or the TNG era. The Romulans grudgingly getting around to actually telling us about a massive threat we need to work together in order to stop... that's an improvement! Romulan-Federation relationships as a result of that crisis are much better than in canon. Not just 'in canon as of the early 2300s." Better than they EVER were, at any point whatsoever, in the roughly 220 years the two nations were interacting in canon.

So for the Federation, being bitter towards the Romulans would be spiteful and foolish. They came out of their shell for literally the first time ever and were willing to work with us, peaceably and honestly? And you want to punish them for that? On account of how things could hypothetically have gone better, if they had (totally against their national character and culture) been even more forthcoming?

The Klingons, by contrast, may be harboring some resentment. For all we know that's one of the reasons they're now planning for war with the Romulans. But we don't have the kind of detailed information on Klingon/Romulan internal politics that would tell us what's going on between them.
I don't want to punish the romulans. I was only asking what happened to them afterwards. The fact that the Biophage brought them out of their shells and talking to the Federation is impressive given how insular they were before the Biophage struck and caused them so much havoc for the reasons you explained.

Omake - Shakakoun - Leila Hann
Was just playing around making a detailed, to-scale panorama of the smallest ship I've drawn so far. While I was working, inspiration struck me and I wrote a thing to go with it.

Omake: Shakakoun

The shakakoun is a lobster-like creature native to Karhazad, known for its deadly bite. With its crustacean-like frontal profile and plethora of destructive weapons, the first warp-capable Dawiar warship practically begged for the name.

One pixel = 1 meter

After the initial triad of Dawiar warpships - Aladrudun, Kenkairu, and Abadashad -scouted Karhazad's native and neighboring star systems, the clans designed a pair of standardized vessels to exploit the newly discovered resources. The first, the kurashkag freighter, was meant to deliver equipment, supplies, and personnel to the colony sites, and harvested materials back to the homeworld. The second, the shakakoun, was to escort the freighters and defend them; Dawiar politics being what they are, each clan expected the others to engage in piracy should they leave the kurashkags unguarded. The small size of the shakakoun was both to enable faster production, and to allow the vessel to land on planetary surfaces. In this way, it could double as a shuttle to bring men and materials between the larger freighters and the surface.

The efficient, compact design of this vessel, despite its technological limitations, suggests a keen affinity for craftsmanship among its makers. The engineering section occupies most of the ship's rear, with the dorsal nacelles, lateral ion thrusters, and ventral laser module all accessible via a short climb from the warp core chamber. The rest of the ship is divided into the forward-ventral cargo bays (including the missile lockers, which feed the railguns via conveyer belt), and the forward-dorsal crew quarters, mess hall, hospital, and bridge. Directly below the mess hall is the ship's reliquary, where momentoes of every Dawiar crewman to die while assigned to that vessel are kept; this positioning is to allow the dead to take comfort in the presence of the living, and the living to be reminded of their likely fate should they fail to perform their duties. Anterior to the mess hall and accessible from both it and the cargo bays is the ship's escape pod, which also stores the ship's food and water supplies.

The mark-1 shakakoun was armed with a ventral laser battery, and the twin forward railguns were designed to launch nuclear missiles. After their embarrassing encounter with the USS Sarek, and their subsequent acquisition of Cardassian technology, the Dawiar devoted significant resources to upgrading these vessels. The railguns could be modified to launch Cardassian plasma torpedoes with only slight adjustments, but the engineers faced two problems when it came to other tactical systems. One was that Cardassian disruptors were too energy-intensive to simply install in the old laser battery's hardpoint; complete reworking of the ship's interior would be needed to integrate it. The other was that there was nowhere to mount the deflector shield without stripping and reshaping much of the outer hull. The solution to both these problems was desperate, but not without a certain elegance; the deflector dish would be mounted on the laser hardpoint, and the mark-2 shakakoun would rely entirely on its torpedoes for offensive firepower.

This greater reliance on projectile weaponry meant that the mark-2 would have to sacrifice some of its cargo space in order to carry more torpedoes. Fortunately, the introduction of the transporter beam obviated the shakakoun's secondary role as a shuttle, enabling it to make that sacrifice without any loss of utility as an freighter escort. Meanwhile, a handful of those very same kurashkag freighters were undergoing an even more extensive refit of their own to become the khalkalad destroyer.

The Dawiar are currently in the process of creating a new light warship - larger and faster than the shakakoun - that integrates shields, transporters, and disruptors from the ground floor.

Plenty of views! Are those the impulse engines mounted on the side?

Here's my latest render: A shot of the Renaissance under construction at Utopia Planitia. No windows yet. Assume they haven't treated the aluminium to make it transparent yet, or something. It's not my starship berth model, but one I downloaded years ago, probably from trekmeshes.ch*. I need to update the materials on it to blend better with the starship.

I've finished unwrapping the saucer section. Lots of calculations to avoid excessive face stretching:

* A quick check leaves me inclined to credit it as Nico Weigland's Drydock model, converted to Blender.

Edit: not actually Mars in the background, but close enough!

Yep. I'm thinking they can turn on their pylons to help the ship take off and land on planets, and for extra maneuverability in combat.

And damn I love that Renaissance. I've had a pretty good idea of what its supposed to look like from our discussions, but its nice to finally have a detailed image (and for that image to be pretty close to what I was picturing). Mars in the background is indeed a nice touch.

Sounds dangerously Star Wars...

It's great to hear that people like it. I've not done any modelling for a long time and never gotten as far as unwrapping and texturing. Getting feedback is great for perseverance. I've been enjoying your artwork too! Is there one of your designs in particular you'd like to see rendered? I might give one a try.

Mate, I love it, great stuff.

Something I like about (old) Star Wars is the gritty, mechanical feel that most of the tech has. You can see the parts moving into place, the engines aligning, the weapons recoiling, etc. The science might not be anywhere near as thought out as Trek's, but it has a more "realistic" appearance.

Since the Dawiar are supposed to be less advanced than the Federation and its peers, I saw an opportunity to design a Trek ship with a more mechanical and less technomagical feel to it. I wasn't thinking of Star Wars specifically, but there's plenty of other scifi that has a similar aesthetic.

And also, the other organs take their share of our pool. The Member World fleets, infrastructure, and other organizations: Yoyodyne, Catian Frontier Police, Amarkian Gendarmes, Andorian Guard, Vulcan Central Inspectorate, etc.

To expand on your last point in addition to Starfleet, we also have Colony Command and Medical which run their own ships which require crew. Then you have all the construction yards, starbases and outposts, research colonies maybe even the mining colonies (or at least the administrators there). Then all those research teams we have and other science facilities. It starts to add up.

Another point is it looks like Starfleet went through a contraction phase due to conflicts with Admiral Rogers and the council which quite likely drove people out of Starfleet along with shrinking those applying to the academy. Once that issue was no longer there we had to gradually build up and get people interested in going to the academy again along with expanding the staff to handle all the applicants. So I imagine in an emergency we can look for anyone with experience and run them through a crash course but for general use the Academy represents a bottleneck on how many people we can teach at one time.

What is good about all those 5 year missions is that some of the officers should rotate back into the Academy to teach and pass on their experience and as we get more out there we can get more teachers which in turn allows us to teach more students. At the end of DS9 Miles ended up transferring back to Earth to teach at the Academy and Starfleet Academy does seem to emphasize brining in instructors with actual experience so if we can blame Admiral Rogers for making most of those unavailable the small size of Starfleet can be explained. More so since we have minimum standards to accept and likely try to balance the number of students to instructors.

This also makes sense as when new members join and affiliate the increase to crew is not just those member species applying to the academy but also that we have a new pool of instructors to draw upon and with more instructors we can handle more students so some of the increase could actually be other races in addition to the new race since we can admit more people now. That would also explain why some people had to apply more than once in the shows. The academy has a minimum standard but I imagine they turn away people that pass that as they have a max class size and likely get more acceptable applicants that they can take. And if you happen to apply in a particularly strong class year you may need to reapply the following year to get in.

Peacetime Starfleet might be but WarTime Starfleet comes with mono-molecular teeth and spits bees.

The last bit is a recent development, but yes.

Sorry, missed this before!

I would say apiata, but all the crazy fins and blades I gave their ships would probably make them a real pain in the ass to render. How about the Caitian Fathership? :3

@Simon_Jester

Hey boss, been reading through the omake archives, and found your Five Years In Review meta review of Star Trek: To Boldly Go.

Reading it then, the speculation about how the Orion Syndicate stuff would play out, as well as how everyone thought Sulu would become Admiral of Starfleet, I have to ask.

Is there any hope of a meta review of how this entire season spiraled off into its current form and how what is apparently the season finale is going to play out?

Because your meta review was amazing to read, and I'd love to see it back again.

I'd say TBG ended up doing a movie or miniseries spinoff about the Orion Civil War. The show may or may not still be running.

Well, I mean, this whole Orion Syndicate arc kicked in because the writers were trying to hold off the Cardassian War for another season for ratings bait. Then one of them had an idea, took that idea to the script lead and director, and they ran way the hell away with it.

A few episodes of the Anti-Syndicate Task Force, a few episodes of diplomacy, an episode or two of Bajor and how it's been taken by the Cardassians.

Then, during the first episode of the season finale, an Amarkian inspector in Leronh opens a shipment casing just before it enters the courthouse. He has time to scream before the bomb goes off.

Nuclear terrorism has been the greatest fear of the modern age since the possibility actually became probably instead of merely theoretical. And the Capitol City of Amarki just got Nuked in an act of terrorism while simultaneously an entire planet declares Independence, denouncing the Federation and Orion Union while seeking a connection with the Cardassians.

Episode Two would be the deceleration in the Senate, the assault on Celos, and the Cardassian Ship arriving to negotiate.

Episode three would be the resolution of the conflict, the tidings of what's to come, and some other stuff that hasn't happened yet.

Thoughts?

Edit: oh. Oh boy.

Season 7. Shit Gets Real.

Hey @OneirosTheWriter why did the Kumari only have combat of 6 and shields of 50? It looks like you forgot it's a Blooded ship and therefore should have had +1 to all stats other than D, including Shields.
