I feel like Piranha, Raven, or Wolf would work pretty well.

Either way, I do feel like the industry cost of these smaller ships makes them feel rather pointless compared to the larger ones. In a peacetime antipiracy role, that's fine--being in more places at once while having enough firepower and durability is all you need. But in wartime, I know that I'd rather have a Thunderchild than almost-four of these light cruisers.

It's basically a Federation Bird-of-Prey in a lot of ways, so naming it after a raptor like a hawk or falcon would be appropriate. And also because it hunts Romulan warbirds, so to speak. Encourage an aggressive and swaggering espirit d'corps among the crews to keep up morale, because they're going to be taking the brunt of losses. Though naming it after any similar predatory animal like Shark or Wolf or Jaguar or whatever should be fitting enough as well.

If we're gonna give it an avian name, I personally quite like Hummingbird. It gives that same sense of... mundanity or whatever, that Stingray did for me.

Just a normal, small animal. Not terribly dangerous all around. Nothing to really, truly worry about.

I also just really like hummingbirds.

Probably best to save "Hummingbird" for something like a shuttlepod, small intrasystem or intersystem craft, or construction drone. In fact, a maneuverable construction drone would be a perfect type of craft for that name.

Regardless, this is a wartime warship meant to inspire confidence, courage, respect. We dont' want something harmless, we want something fierce.

Hummingbirds have some cultural background as fierce warriors, largely brought about by their pretty feisty attitude when it comes to defending a claimed space. They're also incredibly maneuverable flyers.

The initial reading of something like "Hummingbird-class" could imply passivity or meekness, but like the Stingray before it has its own deadly tools at the ready.

That feels very Starfleet, IMHO.

Hummingbird is humble and unassuming, which I think suits Starfleet's themes pretty well. I also just adore hummingbird

Wasps are mean. How about something more protective like a bee?

I still favor avian names, preferably raptors.

Silliest little idea name it the puffin class then see the vulcans try to tear their hair off trying to underdtand why we chose the name puffin for a warship

Tends to get associated with dinosaurs more than birds (overlap between those two groups aside).
:wot?:

I'm not sure that's accurate. Someone says raptor and I think Perigrine Falcon, and the Raptor show/exhibit at the zoo. Jurassic Park and ARK are distant third or fourth and in a Star Trek context I'm far more likely to think of the Romulans than Chris Pratt.
